No favorite stories to tell. Unfortunately, not all of our class are still with us, which is a real regret. A lasting H-SC value: I enjoyed and benefitted from the liberal arts education from a quality faculty and the small college environment at Hampden-Sydney, probably over enjoyed and under studied too much however. 5 JOHN BAGBY BROW NING 1509 Minor Ridge Court, Charlottesville, VA 22901 Home: (434) 973-2306 jbbrowning@emarqmail.com Spouse: None THEN Undergraduate Degree: Hampden-Sydney Retired: I worked as a claims advisor and claims supervisor for United States Fidelity and Guaranty Insurance Company from 1965-1995 NOW Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: While in the Army, I was stationed in Italy for two and a half years, during which I got to do a fair amount of travelling in Western Europe. After retiring, I wrote three books: Flint Hill, which contains a fairly detailed account of my years at HampdenSydney; R.I.P., USF&G describes an insurance company downsizing and trying to figure a way to ‘retire’ their employees without providing retirement benefits; The Long, Cold Winter is a novel about a basketball coach who, in 1950, tries to turn around a losing team by teaching them to shoot the jump shot! In 2007, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer; after receiving conservative treatment, I made a complete recovery. Favorite H-SC Memory: Mr. Hoffman’s freshman English class—and those huge deductions he took in our grade whenever he found a “sentence error” in one of our weekly themes. A lasting H-SC value: Living under HampdenSydney’s honor system instilled values which have stayed with me throughout my life. 6 A. JOE CANADA, JR. P.O. Box 126, Union Hall, VA 24176 Home: (540) 576-2939 reddog23456@gmail.com Spouse: Mary Anne Kellam, married years Children: 5 children & 4 grandchildren THEN Undergraduate Degree: BA, Hampden-Sydney Advanced Degree: LLB Working: Former prosecutor; VA State Senator (Virginia Beach); Juvenile & Domestic Relations Judge; Virginia Beach Circuit Court Judge NOW Favorite H-SC Memory: I made more money my senior year at H-SC than I made my first year as a lawyer. A lasting H-SC value: H-SC had a lasting value in my life. I had no idea what direction in life that I was going. Several professors gave me the insight and courage to go to law school. Life has been good to me, thanks to H-SC. 7 RICHARD L. CHENERY III 6032 Abington Park Dr., Glen Allen, VA 23056 Home: (804) 360-9527 Spouse: Lucy Thrift Chenery, married 45 years Undergraduate Degree: BS THEN NOW Retired: Administrative Assistant - Westvaco Proprietary Drug Salesman - Norwich Pharmacal Company Various positions - US Dept of the Treasury Favorite H-SC Memory: As a new freshman manager of the HSC basketball team at the second game (away at VMI), I was keeping score and lost track of the score early in the game. The other scorekeeper, a junior VMI Keydet, was a real jerk and wouldn’t help me catch up. The officials told us before the start that if we had a score-keeping problem to push the buzzer to stop the game so the correction could be made. So, I pushed the button, the game stopped, and everyone in the field house was looking at me (so I imagined). The officials came over and directed the VMI scorekeeper to help me get straight, which he reluctantly did. After that I had no more scorekeeping problems the rest of the season. As an aside, at the end of the season H-SC played at Western Maryland and their scorekeeper was new at it and lost track a couple of times. I was able to assist him and he didn’t need to stop the game. By that time I felt like an old hand at it, compared to the beginning of the season. As manager, I had one onerous task. Sometimes two of the stars, Hawker and Martin, wouldn’t show up at practice, so Coach Milam would send me up to Cushing to inform them that their 8 presence was desired at the gym. I won’t repeat what their verbal response was, but they would get out of bed and go on down to practice. I never told Coach Milam what their verbal response was. Silence is golden. I had a good year in ’57-’58 but regrettably left in ’59. While those of you in the class were receiving your diplomas on graduation day in ’61 I was on KP at Suffolk County AFB at Westhampton Beach, LI, NY. 9 W. She has Keiser (6) and Justus (1) Son, Jacob (28) is Pastor of a Baptist Church Undergraduate Degree: BA ’66, Hampden-Sydney Advanced Degree: MA, University of South Carolina (History) 1974 NOW Retired: 25 years in Educational Research/Testing: SC Dept. of Education (7 years), Director of Testing at Rock Hill School District, 9 years at Harcourt Assessment/Psychological Corp. 2 years teaching at Benedictine College, and 1.5 years as a educational products/software consultant. Now photographing, editing, and indexing wife’s historical books. Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: Our best travel experience was a 10 day car trip Favorite H-SC Memory: There was an evening during freshman year that my roommate and I “serenaded’ the house of President Robert while under the influence of vodka. Even though all of the lights were on, no one came to the door— probably saving our Hampden-Sydney careers. That same night my roommate decided to exit our third-floor Venable room through the window. Next door, Dan Hawks looked out the window, saw what was happening, and may have saved a life 13 with his loud scream. Another night we decided to appropriate a small railroad pumper car. Putting it on the tracks in Keysville, the plan was to pole it all the way to Farmville which would have put us on the High Bridge that was destroyed during the Civil War. Luckily for us an oncoming train made us take the little car off the tracks a few miles from Keysville. But at that point the train stopped. Thinking we were done for, we ran into the woods. Terrified, we were happy to call the whole thing off at that point. Names are unmentioned to protect the guilty. Then there was the time Chuck Lucas drove us back from Farmville at over 100 miles an hour in the back cargo area of his Dodge station wagon. A lasting H-SC value: Most profound impression was spending some time at the First Baptist Church of Farmville when the leader of the NAACP, Rev. L. Francis Griffin (one of the unsung heroes of the civil rights movement) was fighting for the public schools of Prince Edward County. Although I was little more than an occasional white face in the basement of the church when planning was going on, I’ve always taken pride in my involvement (1965-66). During my second tour at H-SC, I lived with Mrs. Ann Newman in Farmville—a descendant of Patrick Henry and grandmother of the current Farmville mayor. Mr. Trotter introduced us and Mrs. Newman gave me a free place to stay while I worked at Safeway and enabled me to graduate. Thank you, Dr. Coyner, for believing in me when I had a shaky belief in myself. I majored in history and then added an MA in history. What better place to soak in the background of our country than at the only college founded during (or just before) our country’s independence year. The way to become a Hampden-Sydney gentleman was to see it modeled by gentlemen like Professors Coyner, Crawley, Thompson, Ropp, Clower, McCrae, Bliss, and Firenze. You can fill in your favorite names. I miss them all. 14 JOHN R ANDOLPH HIGGS 372 Yorkshire Ave, Waynesboro, VA 22980 Home: (540) 941-8286 johnhiggs@barrenridgevineyards.com THEN Spouse: Shelby Strickland Higgs, married 47 years Children: Robert Higgs, lives in France with wife Angela. Worked for Philip Morris for 27 years, plant manager positions. Worked overseas in Australia, Turkey, and various places in Europe. Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: Lived in Turkey, Kazakhstan, and Switzerland Favorite H-SC Memory: Spring break in Florida A lasting H-SC value: The love of study, the value of honesty and honor! 15 HARRY BENJAMIN JONES, JR. 132 Lancaster Dr, No. 816, Irvington, VA 22480 Home: (804) 438-4320 susanjones@va.metrocast.net THEN Spouse: Susan W. Jones, married 9 years Children: Daughter Laura Holt Jones with sons Nathaniel P. Jones-Lang and Gabriel P. Jones-Lang; Son Harry Benjamin Jones, III with sons Hilo T. Jones and Oscar S. Jones Undergraduate Degree: BA, Hampden-Sydney Advanced Degree: LLB, Washington & Lee Univ. School of Law NOW Retired: 1965-66 - Martin, Hopkins, & Lemon in Roanoke, VA 1966-75 - Assistant City Attorney, represented Roanoke City School Board in desegregation case and defended Roanoke City Manager in alleged wrongful termination of garbage workers - both cases in Federal District Court and 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. 1975-2005 - Private practice in Warrenton, VA until retirement with firm of Walker, Jones, Lawrence, Duggan, and Savage, P.C. Favorite H-SC Memories: Of those memories that are printable: I fondly recall contributing to the opening of the first Hampden-Sydney College Bookstore along with Professor Keith Dix and my roommate, Jim Burgess. The “Blind Fiddler” routine at PiKA parties. The first (and last) Annual Kappa Sig “Christmas Pageant” All pledge days (at least the early hours . . . ) The Roanoke College vs. H-SC Basketball game 16 where Roanoke sent in a “hatchet man” to control Leon Hawker’s dribbling. When Hatchet Man picked up several fouls, he slugged Leon, and the stands emptied and a riot was narrowly averted when the Roanoke players ran out the front door. The H-SC vs. Lynchburg College basketball game during which Leon Hawker and his high-school teammate dueled. Leon got the better of it and when his former teammate fouled out and was on his way to the showers, he gave the Hampden-Sydney home crowd a long two-handed “Double Bird.” The day a rumor circulated that a hooker was “taking on all comers” at the KA house. Those responding (mostly gullible freshmen), when entering the Chamber of Love, were met by an infamous KA brother in female attire. She swore the nervous “John” to secrecy. The time a PiKA brother lost control of his car on the Five Forks Road and had it towed to the PiKA House, where he sold sledgehammer blows at one dollar per lick, and then set the wreck on fire. (The PiKA House survived unscathed!) I recall hearing a rumor that sometime in the fifties, at the beginning of school year, parties unknown switched the room numbers on the classrooms in Morton Hall, which resulted in several days confusion over which class rooms were to be occupied by which professors. Francis “The Axman.” Mama Schaible’s in Black Bottom. “Reggie” Smith. “Heckle & Jeckle.” Mr. and Mrs. Levesque at the Boxwood Tourist Cabins & Restaurant. And The Corner Restaurant and chili-cheese-bacon hot dogs and fries. Bootlegging “Crab Orchard” in pints for class of ’61 while guarding the campus all night from Randolph-Macon students. Food fight in protest of Slater Food Service, long before “Animal House” immortalized this practice on film. Crawling into the car trunk and sneaking into the Drive-in movies; taking your date to the Drive-in movie . . . and sneaking into the back seat! The revolt of the Freshman Class against the perceived abuses by the Vigilance Committee and the Sophomore Class to the Rat System (rat caps, signs, intelligence tests, and the like). The Freshmen barricaded Venable Hall by barring entry through doors, windows, even the walls and the roof. Both Sophomores and Freshmen lost control of the situation, and much damage was done to the Hallowed Structure. Attending Longwood College summer school to fulfill the H-SC Biology requirement (only pre-meds took Overcash’s biology!) when the male-female 17 enrollment was about 35 guys and about 250 girls. Remember the abandoned house on the Five Forks Road? The time my roommate overheard a bunch of guys arguing about how much money it would take to allow your head to be shaved—he responded he would do it for fifty dollars. The group huddled, presented him with $50 cash. His bluff being called, he responded like a gentleman, and followed the group to the showers. He wore a fedora for many weeks thereafter. His professors took pity and allowed him to wear the hat during class. (Remember, this was the late 50’s and modesty was still in style.) A lasting H-SC value: The honor system—“We do not lie, cheat or steal, nor tolerate those who do”—has made for lasting friendships from high school at Greenbriar Military School, Hampden-Sydney College, and Washington & Lee Law School. Trust is invaluable. Absent the honor code, it is hard earned. 18 HUGH K. LE ARY 6161 River Road #12, Richmond, Va 23226 patleary1@verizon.net Spouse: Deceased Undergraduate Degree: BA, Hampden-Sydney THEN Retired: Bank of America or predecessors - 33 years Executive Director Mary Morton Parsons Foundation - 14 years Favorite H-SC Memory: Pledge Day, Graduation A lasting H-SC value: Honor Code 19 CARY B. MAYO III 80 Sawtimber Drive, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926 Home: (843) 837-6145 Spouse: Linda K. Mayo, married 36 years Children: 2 children, 2 step-children, 2 stepgrandchildren THEN Undergraduate Degree: BA, Hampden-Sydney Retired: Insurance Sales and management Met Life S/MGR - 15 years State Mutual of American - General Agt/Virginia 15 yr 20 RICHARD McCARTHY III 1120 Octavia Street, New Orleans, LA 70115 Home: (504) 895-0686 dick@richardgrayspowercompany.com THEN Spouse: Patricia (“Tish”) McCarthy, married 47 years Children: Richard McCarthy IV, HSC, London School of Economics, New Orleans. Catherine L. McCarthy, Loyola, NYU Film School, New Orleans and New York Undergraduate Degree: BA, Hampden-Sydney Advanced Degree: Sigma Chi - Sigma Sigma Chapter NOW Working: CEO, President of Richard Gray’s Power Company: Entrepreneur, built or own many companies, Consumer marketing, domestic bank recruiting, worldwide Marketing, travel and distribution. Oil Mop, Romac, Oreck Corporation, Stewart Enterprises, McCarthy Associates National BancSearch, Richard Gray’s Power Company (current). Manufacture and distribute to US and 22 countries, patented electronics power delivery systems to the audio, video, computer, and communications industries. Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: Built manufacturing plant in west Ireland, spent much time in Europe, climbed volcanoes and rode camels in Lanzarote (off coast of Africa), went dog sledding in glaciers in Alaska, extensive travel to China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and much more. Married Tish McCarthy of London, who (I found after the fact) is a descendant of John 21 Hampden (eponym of our school) and attended Hampden-House School in England. She is a commercial artist and runs her own commercial art studio called Tish McCarthy Designs. Our son Richard attended Hampden-Sydney for his freshman year, but couldn’t stand the isolation, so transferred to London and finished getting his graduate degree from London School of Economics. Check him out at www.marketumbrella. org. Our daughter Catherine is a film maker and accomplished teacher of Anusara Yoga, www.nolayoga.com. After Hurricane Katrina, Tish and I purchased a spring-summer-fall mountain retreat in Cashiers, NC. Favorite H-SC Memory: At Hampden-Sydney I honed my entrepreneurial skills which propelled me into a lifetime of sales and marketing. Selling hard apple cider at the Sigma Chi house, to building low-fi musical systems and special corner-baffled speakers for many of you in Graham Hall. My fondest memories were not academic but fraternity related—great fun and the usual college drinking and getting up to the usual pranks. I do remember writing some poem to make it into Sigma Upsilon National Honorary Literary Fraternity which shocked me greatly. I remember my roommate John Higgs getting so plastered he thought he could fly. He found out he couldn’t, but leave that story up to him. I remember hitchhiking up to NY and Philly on many, many weekends, when all you needed back then was to wear a H-SC sweater and you could pick up a ride easily. I remember Sigma Chi Fred Weaver who, while driving on the back roads, ran over a dog, and a boy runs out and says, “Mister, you ran over my dog.” Fred paid $20 to the boy and drove on. Yep, that’s right. On the way back he ran over the same dog, but this time he didn’t pay the boy. Now that is fast learning from our Hampden-Sydney education. I remember great teachers, and of course the many times I was called into Dean Crawley’s office. Of course I remember all of the party weekends, and the many trips to the girls colleges throughout the area, and of course Longwood! I am sure, when we all get together there will be many other memories to share. I can’t wait! A lasting H-SC value: In spite of my desire to party and have a great time I really value my time On The Hill and value being a Hampden-Sydney “Gentleman.” I am sorry that we live so far away that we have not kept in touch with many classmates. It really must be special to live in Virginia and to have graduated from Hampden-Sydney and be able to share experiences. Note: If I made many spelling errors or typos, just think I majored in English! 22 DANIEL WALTER McK EEL, JR. P.O. Box 15, Van Buren, MO 63965 Home: (573) 323-8897 danmckeel12@aol.com THEN Spouse: Virginia R. (Louise) McKeel, married 49+ years Children: Three living children: Dan III, Allison, Helen. No grandchildren yet. Undergraduate Degree: B.S., Hampden-Sydney Advanced Degree: M.D., UVA Medical School 1966 NOW Retired: Pre- & postdoctoral NIH fellowships 1964, 1966-67; 1967-71 Internship/Residency in Pathology, Washington U. School of Medicine/ Barnes Hospital; St. Louis MO; US Army Institute of Surgical Research 1971-74; Asst. Prof. Pathology WUSM 1974-1982; Assoc. Prof. of Pathology with tenure 1982-2005; Head of Autopsy Pathology 1982-87; head of Neuropathology Core Lab, WUSM ADRC 1985-2004; 200 publications, 36 NIH research grants. Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: Married to beautiful and smart, caring and witty, wonderful and wise super Mom and super wife Virginia Louise. Had two wonderful trips with her to Japan in 1996 and 2002. Solo lecture tour to South Korea in 2004. Side trips for fun to Mexico City and Acapulco. Got CHF and hypertension in 2004 and have been taking care of those chronic conditions since. Mother-in-law Sally died at age 100+ after 10 years of Alzheimer’s disease. We were privileged to have Sally at home with us the last 3 years after moving from St. Louis to Van Buren on the beautiful National Scenic Current River near Big 23 Spring National Park in 2008. Learned a LOT about Medicare and Hospice services (note: we have a problem!) Remembrances are too many: the Army was a great experience in retrospect. Getting to know our now many friends in Japan has been a treasure. Meeting all those Cold War Warrior nuclear workers and getting involved with the government has been instructive to say the least! Favorite H-SC Memory: Has to be the 1950 Ford which Mert Fowlkes and I purchased when we were brothers at the Chi Phi. Mert was our best man in 1961 at Carmel and was President of Chi Phi. Usually a very straight-arrow guy, I don’t remember following too many rules and laws with that old Ford. It sure was fun both during the time we owned it and years after recalling the event. George McVey, my great roommate for three years at H-SC, and I had a contest one year to see who could get the most academic credits and thus earn “freedom” from attending classes. He earned a lot but I was in there trying! I remember fondly being the water boy on the varsity basketball team and looking up (literally) to Horsley Putt and all those tall guys who treated me kindly. Then there was the time I was moved up from my 5 or 6 spot on the varsity tennis team to go against #1, a hot shot, from W&L, to stack the deck. I was the sacrifice, of course. Yes, we did things like that. And who can forget John Luster Brinkley striding across the lawns with his briefcase and threepiece suit to visit dear Professor Graves Thompson. I struggled with Physical Chemistry but Dean Vail nevertheless was kind to me and may have even helped me get into UVA med School—which had seemed problematic at one point. There were MANY excellent students and faculty at H-SC who taught lessons of all kinds that sustain me to this day. And, yes, I especially remember those many times I read about things in the H-SC library that weren’t on the formal curriculum (could that be why I wasn’t accepted at UVA Med my freshman year?) Things like microvasculature and theoretical physics, x-rays, etc. What a great place! A lasting H-SC value: H-SC and the Chi Phi house were amazing places in 1957-61 to expand horizons both socially and academically. Lessons learned being on the Honor Society team in difficult times cannot be replaced as a value learned and earned. Older guys helping less experienced newbies and acting by example as role models was an exemplar of how we should treat our younger colleagues. Character is not the exclusive province of the wealthiest among us. Participating in sports is important. So is acquisition of knowledge of other religions and cultures as the business world becomes more and more 24 globalized. And those “old” virtues of hard work, honesty, and integrity assume more and more importance as we grow old. My wife has kept an old New Yorker poster hanging somewhere in our six houses. The theme is, there is no black and white, only gray. I am growing to understand how true that is. They say you grow more into concrete thinking as the mind “matures” and “gets old.” As one who has studied brain structure and function up close and personal all my life, I now equate growing old with growing wiser, and thank goodness. I don’t even blink about crises that paralyzed me into inaction when I was younger. Becoming old is just fine with me. I don’t put things off nearly as much as I once did. Happy 50th reunion, all you H-SC folks. Undergraduate Degree: BS, Hampden-Sydney Advanced Degree: MD from Duke Retired: Practiced Ear, Nose, and Throat in New Bern, NC, from solo practice to 4-man practice with offices in 3 towns. Had to retire on disability (intention tremor) approximately 12 years ago. NOW Travel, excursions, experiences, etc.: We have gone on 10+ Elderhostels and a Tauck tour and a tour of Austria and Czech Republic with our local public radio group. Our best trips were through the Canadian Rockies and a Theater trip to London. No divorce so far. Had a cholycystectomy (gall bladder) on the 50th anniversary of D-Day. Had quadruple bypass after getting symptoms on a cruise ship in Canadian waters, going down a rope ladder to a pilot boat, spending 24 hours in Halifax, Nova Scotia, signing out against medical advice, returning to the ship and fending off suggestions to be treated in New York City (because it was high Jewish Holidays and none of the best docs would be available). Had the surgery in New Bern—was so zonked on Versed that my wife had to be awakened to okay the surgery. We are big into Scottish stuff and attend Highland games in NC. In 2009, we went Edinburgh for “The Gathering,” a worldwide 32 Highland game. My son, Tim, went with us and marched in a parade from Holyrood palace to Edinburgh Castle up the royal mile. After the Gathering we toured Glamis Castle and St. Andrews. Tim and his wife raced out the famous bridge on the Old Course and posed for a picture. Favorite H-SC Memory: There are many. I remember going to RandolphMacon my Freshman year for “The Game.” We had to wear our beanies and I remember going on the sideline urging the team on for the winning touchdown. There were several Old South Balls where we had to grow beards. Mine was bright red (it is white now). We would rent confederate uniforms and had a big dance in Richmond. Afterwards we would get casual and go to some park and party. Once I fell asleep and so did my date and we woke up in daylight. I remember Freshman English with Dr. Bee Bop Ropp. Organic chemistry was a big challenge. It was taught by some PhD who had been in industry. I took it as a junior, and there were seniors in the class who had already been accepted at med school and they really suffered. Mr. Overcash, biology, had a pipeline to all the medical schools; you had to be on his good side to get a recommendation. NOW 33 J. Mrs. Thompson said if I needed any buttons sewed on to bring them over. 35 MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1961 (compiled from the academic catalogue and the tiger) Mr. John M. Acken Mr. Leo R.
