Making Time Count
No matter who we are, rich or
poor, tall or short, old or young, we
all have 24 hours in the day and so
much of what we become is a direct result of what we do with the
time we are given. As a Superintendent/Principal, I think about the
subject of time a lot. I am constantly trying to get things done
and there never seems to be
enough time in the day to do it all.
I am sure that everyone can relate
to that feeling.
As a parent, I can also understand
the pressure of time management
when it comes to balancing things
and carving out time to spend with
my kids. Of course there is the debate over whether kids need quality time vs. quantity of time. I once
heard it explained another way…
the word “love” to kids is actually
spelled t-i-m-e. That statement is
so true!
I was going through the pile of
things that come across my desk
recently and I came across an article
that provided some great tips on finding more time in our day to do what
really matters. We have all heard
them before, but I think that they are
worth reviewing again so here are a
few of my favorites…
?Set Priorities-Sit down and list
what’s truly important to you.
Then decide how to spend
your time. Make sure your decisions reflect what matters.
Have a choice between cooking a fancy dinner or talking
with your child about school?
Order a pizza and talk.
?Spend One-on-One Time-Your
child needs time to talk with
you. Time to see and hear
how you would apply your experience and your values to
the problems that he/she is
facing. There’s nothing like
spending time alone with a
parent to make a child of any
age feel special. Try making
an appointment to spend some
time alone with your child each
week. Write it on your calen-

dar. Then treat that appointment as seriously as you would an important business meeting.
?Use the “Off” Button-You probably have more
time than you think, but it’s being stolen
from you and your child by electronics! So
what can you do?
?Turn off the Television - Record any programs
you or your child can’t miss.
?Turn off the Cell Phone - Let the calls and text
messages go during your time with your
kids.
?Turn off the Computer - It’s amazing how much
time can be lost to searching the Internet,
checking status updates on Facebook, and
emailing.
?Use Car Time-You probably spend a lot of time
in the car with your child. It’s a wonderful
opportunity to have meaningful conversations and a real influence on your child.
Your child is a “captive audience” in the car
and you can take full advantage by talking
about things that really matter.
I think all of these are great suggestions for maximizing the time you have. I am no expert on time
management, but I do know that right now is a crucial time in the lives of our students. In fact, I think
that some of the wisest words I have ever heard
were actually sung in a song by Van Halen on this
subject. That’s right, I am quoting Van Halen in the
monthly newsletter. Sing along if you know the
song…
“Right now, hey
It's your tomorrow
Right now,
C'mon, it's everything
Right now,
Catch a magic moment, do it
Right here and now
It means everything”
Forget about time management. It really comes
down to attention management. The question becomes, “What are we going to choose to spend our
precious attention on right now?” Where we spend
our attention tells everyone else what we consider
to be important. As a school, we are committed to
spending our time on what is most important each
and every day. We have a huge role to play in the
development of kids and we will promise to do our
very best without any excuses. But please remem-
ber that nothing replaces the impact that loved ones
have in the lives of young people. I am hoping that
we can do whatever we can to work together to
maximize the time that we have right now because
it really does mean everything. Happy holidays to
everyone and GO COUGARS!

Unfortunately the Grant Cougar Marching Band will
not be participating in the Redding Lighted Christmas parade on Saturday, December 1st at 6 p.m
due to the bad weather forecast.
MUSIC IS IN THE AIR
December is the time to hear music
at Grant School. The Winter Concert
for preschool through 6th grade is
scheduled for Tuesday, December
18th at 1 p.m. in the gym. The Winter Concert for
band and choir is scheduled for Wednesday, December 19th at 1:15 and 6 p.m. Please come and

HOLIDAY GRAMS
CHARACTER TRAITS
Student Council will be selling Holiday Grams for
$1 beginning December 11th through 18th. They
may be purchased during lunch in the cafeteria or
by turning in the form below to the school office.
November: Good Judgment
December: Kindness
Students who exemplify these character traits are
nominated by staff for recognition. Grades K-3 are
recognized with certificates presented by the administrators in their classrooms. Grades 4-8 are recognized at the following month’s school board meeting.
At the end of each month students will be nominated
by Grant School support staff and students will be
recognized for their exemplary character. Please reinforce these character traits at home as well.

CANNED FOOD DRIVE
Grant School’s Student Council would like to
thank all the families that donated food to the
Good News Rescue Mission canned food drive.
We collected over 500 cans. The next collection
period is December 10th - 21st. Please bring
your cans to your child’s classroom or the school
office. Happy Holidays from Student Council.
SCHOOL SAFETY
Thank you, parent volunteers, for signing in and
wearing badges when helping out in classrooms.
All visitors are to check in with the office when
arriving on campus. Parents are encouraged to
drop their children off at the curb in the morning.
When picking up children in the afternoon, please
wait in the kindergarten playground area for older
children to be dismissed. A lockdown drill will be
held soon with the help of the Safety Committee
and law enforcement.
POSITIVE REFERRAL
Grant students that are found showing exemplary behavior get rewarded with a positive referral. This referral results in a special presentation of the positive
behavior in the student’s classroom by the principal, a
positive reward, and a positive referral to take home.
We will also be showcasing our positive referral recipients in the monthly newsletter. Keep up the good
work.

ATTENTION 6TH GRADE PARENTS
A California law (AB 354) requires all children entering 7 th grade to have the Tdap booster vaccine,
more commonly known as the “whooping cough”
shot, before starting the 2013/2014 school year.
We strongly encourage you to make an appointment now with your medical provider, local clinic or
a pharmacy for your child to receive the shot.
Please bring in proof of vaccination to the school
office as soon as possible and before the end of this
school year.
Students who have not had the booster Tdap
will not be admitted for the 2013-2014 school
year until we have received proof they have
completed the necessary immunization. If you
have any questions or concerns, please contact the
school office at 243-0561.

second trimester in March, and then in May all
tickets will be put in one giant drawing for a Kindle

FAMILY LUNCHEON
Grant School’s Veteran’s Day assembly
was enjoyed by the
students, faculty, and community
CENTERVILLE EDUC. FOUNDATION
The Centerville Education Foundation (CEF) is looking for parent volunteers to help each of our classrooms create a special art project to be auctioned at
this year’s auction. The event is March 9th but we
love to share as many projects as possible at the
PTO Art Fair in February. Please contact your
child’s teacher and let them know you would be willing to help. This is a great way to make a big difference for our students. Last year we raised almost
$30,000. Thank you in advance for your help and
participation! Join us at our next CEF meeting on
December 12th at 7 p.m. in the Grant School Library to learn more about CEF and help plan for this
great event.
Grant School’s 14th annual Thanksgiving Family
Feast luncheon was a huge success! A very very
big thank you to our hard working cafeteria staff,
Patti, Kim, April, and Susanne, the maintenance
staff Cliff and Bob, and all the rest of the staff who
helped serve. Thanks also to Mrs. Judge’s art
class students for decorating the tables and the
cafeteria. We

MUSIC BOOSTERS NEWS
The Music Boosters are looking for
parent volunteers to join this fun
organization to support our students’ music programs. In December there are wonderful events
planned: the Redding Lighted
Christmas Parade, Caroling Cougars and the Winter Concerts. To find out how you
can help with these events, come to a meeting!
The Music Boosters meet the first Thursday of
every month from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in Ms. Kyle’s
office, which is adjacent to the stage in the gym.
Come and join and support our school’s terrific
musicians and singers!

The girls season is underway with games and tournaments in abundance. The 8th grade team took
second place in the top division of the Sequoia
Tournament. Grant will be hosting a 7th grade girls
and boys tournament and cheer competition December 13th, 14th, and 15th. The girls season
ends December 17th.

GRANT ALUMNI CROSS COUNTRY
You may have seen in the paper that Shasta High
Varsity Boys Cross Country team won the Northern
Section Championship (as well as the Northern
Section Division 3 Championship, the Sacramento
River League Championship and several invitationals this year). They were very impressive in the
section meet setting a new all time section team
record. What you may not know is that all five runners who scored for Shasta are Grant Grads !
The top five included Blake Zufall, Landon Woollard, Hunter Jensen, Riley Davis and Josh
Bland! Not bad for little ol’ Grant School! But it
gets even better; the # 6 runner was also from
Grant, Nate Schillen and the # 8 runner was
Adam Zufall. Only one of the eight man team was
not from Grant and that was Wes Jackman (from
Redding Christian Jr. High). Congratulations! We
are so proud of our Grant alumni!

On behalf of the Grant Sports Boosters, I would
like to thank all the fathers & daughters who attended the dance. It was a great evening! Thank

Caroling in Redding!
This year the Grant School Caroling Cougars will be offering the gift of entertainment!! On Saturday, December 8 th from 3-8 p.m. we will be caroling in the Redding area. The price for a visit from our carolers will be $10.00 and include three
holiday songs and a holiday treat for those in attendance. If you are interested
in having the Caroling Cougars visit your home or place of work, please contact

Who’s Growing in the Grant Garden
The Closing Harvest – Sadly, we say goodbye to the first season of our amazing summer garden. What a beautiful bounty
we had. I don’t think we have ever seen so many delicious cherry tomatoes, ever! Not to fear, come spring time, we will be repla nting
and doing it all over again for next year!
Outdoor Classroom Adventures –
Cooking the 3 Sister’s Harvest – All of our 4 th graders and Mr. Kelley’s 5 th graders had a fantastic day of cooking in the VAPA room!
We had an absolute blast making Winter Squash Soup & Sage with Rattlesnake Beans and baking Pumpkin Muffins – grown fresh
in the school garden! We had stations set-up with a parent volunteer or a teacher at each station. Each table either made a pot of soup or
a batch of muffins. Kids cut, chopped, sliced, pureed, measured, stirred – you name it, they did it! Then they got to eat everything they
made. The pumpkin muffins are always a big hit and the soup was very successful too (75%-80% loved it, the rest either were not sure
or did not like it). Either way, the kids all tried it and most were very surprised by how good it tasted.
One of our favorite quotes, “Dad, can you ask Michelle Cave for the recipe for the Winter Squash Soup because I just can’t get
enough of it!” -Dominick
Baking Pumpkin Muffins – This fun lesson was a 2 day event with Mrs. Cogle & Mrs. Crane’s 2 nd graders and 3rd graders. Students
came to the VAPA room for baking fun. We had a few pumpkins and blue hubbard squash left from the garden that we used for the
muffins. 2 nd grade went off without a hitch and the kids all enjoyed the muffins they baked. 3 rd grade had a couple of first hand lessons
in science. Both sessions forgot a very important ingredient – sugar! One group forgot the white sugar only and the other group forgot
the white and brown sugar! Not only did they taste different, but they looked different too. Luckily each session also baked a batch of
muffins with the sugar. This made for a great taste test, an important lesson on following a recipe and the science behind ba king. All in
all, we had another fantastic day of cooking!

Pumpkin Pecan Muffins – Michelle Cave
Ingredients
3 1/3 cups all purpose flour
½ cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 tsp baking soda
1 ½ tsp salt
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1 can (15 oz) pumpkin or 1 ½ cups cooked pumpkin
1 cup vegetable oil (organic canola, sunflower, safflower)
4 eggs
2/3 cup water
1 cup chopped pecans – or other ground nuts
Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl.
Combine pumpkin, oil, eggs, sugar, and water in a mixing bowl.
Mix until combined well. Stir dry ingredients into pumpkin mixture until just
combined.
Fold in pecans.
Pre-heat oven to 350.
Muffins: Spoon into greased muffin tins. Bake for 18-20 minutes.
Loaves: Pour into greased loaf pan/s. Bake for 60 minutes.
Yield: 2 loaves or 24 muffins
