cycling is a popular sport, he
moved at age 5 to Maine. But his
memories of the cycling world
of France lingered. “Something
stuck — there’s something so
romantic about it that attracted
me,” says Mr. Bastide, 27.
Three years ago he decided “the
biking would be better” in California and moved to the Bay Area.
Eventually, he and Ms. BastideVallstrom ended up at the same
software company, VMware in
Palo Alto, although they worked
in different buildings. She’s a
quality assurance manager, and
he’s a QA engineer.
Last year, when Ms. BastideVallstrom was becoming increasingly interested in the cycling
world beyond commuting, “I
heard a rumor at work about this
fast biker guy” named Jesse, she
recounts. She e-mailed him, an
acquaintance was made, and they
decided to go for a ride.
The first time they set off
together, “I thought, wow! She has
a real motor,” Mr. Bastide recalls.
“I had to work hard to keep up.”
He obviously didn’t mind making the effort. “We biked for a
couple of months, then figured we
liked each other off the bike,” Ms.
Bastide-Vallstrom says, glancing
at her grinning husband.
Before moving to Menlo Park
in May, the couple commuted
on their bikes to Palo Alto from
San Francisco. Last summer, they
flew to Sweden to get married.
While there, they took a two-day
300-mile bike ride — something
they don’t plan to try again. “Once
you’ve biked more than seven and
a half hours at one time, it ceases
to be fun,” he says wryly.
A way of life
Their shared love of cycling
goes beyond an “addiction,” Mr.
Bastide notes. “It’s really a lifestyle, and we enjoy it,” he says.
Their sleep and eating habits are
geared to support the considerable energy they put into cycling,
and that means that “the food bill
has really gone up,” Ms. BastideVallstrom laughs. “We eat more
organic food, real food, made
from scratch,” she says, adding

programs such as:
Exploring options
While both cyclists enjoy racing, Ms. Bastide-Vallstrom also
emphasizes the social aspects of
riding, particularly as a part of
a team. Mr. Bastide, who calls
cycling for men “a testosterone
fest,” recently joined a team as well,
called Kovarus/Squadra Ovest.
People who are interested in
exploring their options in the
biking world might start by riding with local groups. “You don’t
have to be a member to test out a
group — you just show up,” Ms.
Bastide-Vallstrom says.
They mention Peninsula
groups such as Alto Velo and
Peninsula Velo as possibilities.
Ms. Bastide-Vallstrom recommends finding a personal coach
if you’re serious about training
for road cycling and racing. Her
coach is Linda Jackson, a cyclist in
the 1996 Summer Olympics who
manages the PABW racing team
she rides with.
A coach, Ms. Bastide-Vallstrom
says, can help novices avoid common mistakes. For example, inexperienced riders eager to fully
participate in cycling events “tend
to go hard all the time,” she says. A
coach can moderate that urge and
“can give you long-term goals.”
Mr. Bastide notes that would-be

He also recommends consulting Joe Friel’s “The Cyclist’s

Finding the right bicycle
shouldn’t be a problem with local
bike shops that allow customers to
go for a “demo ride,” taking the
bike out on the road rather than
only to the back parking lot, Mr.
Bastide says. But test riding three
or four bikes in the lot can also be
a good way to ensure that the bike
is a good fit.
Ms. Bastide-Vallstrom recommends taking advantage of
resources such as the speaker

on University Avenue. A series
now scheduled there has two
more Wednesday evening talks:
“Descending,” on Nov. 8; and
Nutrition and Racing, on Nov. 15.
She also recommends the

people seeking information about

Stanford seeks volunteers
for study on depression
Stanford University School of
Medicine is seeking 300 volunteers for a study focusing on the
role of genes in depression.
People who have had depression before the age of 31, who
have experienced at least two
depressive episodes, and who
have at least one sibling or
parent with depression may
be eligible to participate in
the study.
Dr. Douglas Levinson, professor of psychiatry and behav-

leading the study.
During the four-year study,
researchers at six universities
will gather information on personal and family mental health

A
stellar example of the uniquely nature-oriented post-modern architecture that flourished
throughout mid-century California, this five bedroom residence is enviably located on
a quiet cul-de-sac in prime West Atherton. The centerpiece of the design is the richly
inviting living and dining room ensemble, crowned by dramatic wedges of angular ceiling and
showcasing soaring walls of glass. Outside, stately redwoods and lush gardens connect the broad
blue sky with swathes of verdant lawn, evoking a Palm Springs resort ambiance complete with
a tranquil tiered fountain and a sparkling stone-edged swimming pool. With its stunning architectural character and large lot of one acre, this unique offering promises the very best of both
town and country living.
Offered at $2,995,000
