From the beginning our mission has been to present the most talented and revered jazz musicians in the world, and to do so, with luxury, comfort and the love of the world’s greatest music. They say that the public votes with their feet, and if that is the case, then our mission has been successful thus far as The Jazz Cruise ’15 sold out months before sailing, has the largest wait list in years and remains a very sought after play date for our musicians. We are very proud of this achievement, but even prouder that you have decided to spend a week with us and are willing to rely upon us to curate your vacation. We will say that we spend countless hours communicating with and listening to our guests, all with the hope of fashioning the best possible program. This year’s program again features a wonderful blend of jazz legends, current stars and those just emerging into stardom. If you are on this ship then it is clear that you can play or else you would not have been chosen to perform. Talent, professionalism and the creativity required to be a top performer are the qualities that you will see here all week. Particularly exciting this year is our ability to honor one person in particular as our inductee to The Jazz Cruise Hall of Fame, George Wein. George is the undisputed founder of the jazz festival and may just be the single most influential jazz impresario and producer ever. Without exaggeration, I doubt that there would be much of a jazz scene these days had it not been for George Wein. As always we close our Welcome note with an expression of gratitude, thanks and respect for our guests. I have had the opportunity to review the current manifest and compare it to our past guest list and the number of double digit returning guests is simply astounding. Without that type of commitment and loyalty, there is no way that The Jazz Cruise would be able to present the amount and level of entertainment that it does. On behalf of all of us at Entertainment Cruise Productions, The Jazz Cruise, my mother and cruise founder Anita E. Berry and my brother and Cruise Director Bob Lazaroff, who is sailing with us again, it’s time for some music! Enjoy! MICHAEL LAZAROFF ANITA E. BERRY NT E M IN A T R E ENT ORS T C DIRE A lot of people contribute to making The Jazz Cruise special. Let’s take a moment to recognize just a few whose contributions will be felt this week by our guests. SHELLY BERG MARCUS MILLER MUSIC DIRECTOR JAZZ HOST For the past few years, Shelly has been the driving musical force of The Jazz Cruise. Always looking for new and better ways to present and showcase the music, Shelly’s imagination and creativity are essential to the cruise. A monster performer, in his own right, we are very grateful to have Shelly leading our team. As a host of the Real Jazz show on SiriusXM, Marcus is uniquely equipped and prepared to interview our jazz stars. Though still in his prime, having begun his career in his teens, Marcus is an “old hand” in the world of jazz which enables him to provide texture and context to his interviews, as well as lead a very “hot band”. JOHN FEDCHOCK KEN PEPLOWSKI BIG BAND DIRECTOR EVENT HOST Having our own Big Band is quite the luxury and quite the accomplishment. None of this would happen without the leadership and devotion of trombonist John Fedchock who curates, directs and organizes all of the rehearsals and performances of our Big Band. John’s devotion to this program can be felt with each note. Long time performer on The Jazz Cruise, Ken has led All Star Groups, performed in the Big Band and is probably best known for his specialty shows working with some of our legendary performers in smaller, more intimate settings. A member of The Jazz Cruise Hall of Fame, Ken is also the host/producer of the Welcome Show. WYCLIFFE GORDON JOHN PIZZARELLI GOSPEL/EVENT HOST EVENT HOST As the most decorated trombone player in the world, Wycliffe represents the very top of the jazz world. Coupling this stature with the authenticity that he brings to the Gospel Show as well as his eternal patience and kindness, Wycliffe is the “heart and soul” of The Jazz Cruise, and a member of The Jazz Cruise Hall of Fame. Making jazz accessible to all and providing a level of entertainment that is infectious as well as amazing, John will step into the limelight this year as a host of some activities, particularly ones where his overwhelming knowledge of jazz and his irrepressible good nature and humor can be used to their fullest. C H E S I RU FF A T S S/ OST ALONZO BODDEN TODD BARKAN COMIC/HOST HISTORIAN Just as sherbet cleanses the palate between courses, so too, does comedy and laughter provide a needed respite from night and day sessions of music. For the past few years, Alonzo has been our favorite flavor of sherbet, always finding humor in the normal and customary events of life. Award winning and in demand throughout the country, Alonzo loves jazz and we are glad for that. DANE BUTCHER The Jazz Cruise has been blessed to have one of the nation’s most knowledgeable (and entertaining) jazz historians and aficionados sailing with us for the past few years. Todd’s films, narrative and insights bring educational enjoyment to our guests. Always great stuff from Todd. JOEY FAIRCHILD PRODUCTION MANAGER No cruise ship has ever been built for the purpose of presenting the types of music Just about to begin his second decade cruises that we operate. It is Joey’s job, as our Production as the cruise host of the sailings of Manager, to transform the cruise ship that Holland America Entertainment Cruise Productions, Australian born Dane provides us into the music festival venue that we have all continues to make sure that the trains run on time and that come to expect. each and every guest is happy and knowledgeable of the day’s events and going-ons. CRUISE HOST THE JAZZ CRUISE HALL OF FAME 2015 – INDUCTEE GEORGE WEIN The Jazz Cruise would like to honor and thank George Wein for his legendary contribution to jazz. As the most famous jazz impresario in jazz history, George founded the Newport Jazz Festival and so many other festivals, concerts and programs. Without the work and effort of George Wein, a program such as The Jazz Cruise would probably not be available today. ERNIE ADAMS S& R A ST S ALL SICIAN U M D BAN G I B Always the consummate drummer and gentleman, Ernie (HOF) has been a mainstay of the cruise, The Jazz Cruise rhythm section and as an All Star almost from the beginning. With his cool style, Ernie makes the job of being a jazz drummer look very easy. JIMMY GREENE Jimmy and his saxophone popped on The Jazz Cruise scene a few years ago, due largely to being named one of Downbeat’s 25 Rising Stars of Jazz. His impact was immediate and he is now part of The Jazz Cruise family. JOHN ALLRED NIKI HARIS CHUCK BERGERON ANTONIO HART RANDY BRECKER ANDRE HAYWARD PETER ERSKINE DICK HYMAN ALLEN FARNHAM TONY KADLECK DAVID FINCK TOM KENNEDY John’s trombone has been on countless sailings and he has become a fixture in the Big Band and with our All Stars. Always affable and willing to share a jazz story that is new to you, John is one of the great personalities on the cruise. Having sailed with us as a sideman, Chuck is excited to be both an All Star and Big Band bassist for the cruise. Both as a musician and a composer, he is one of the most versatile and active musicians in jazz. One of the true legends in the genre, Randy’s trumpet has been part of some of the most revered groups, tunes and events in the world of jazz. The Jazz Cruise is honored to include Randy in any and all of its cruises. When you read Peter’s resume, it is hard to believe that this is the first time this universally heralded drummer has sailed with us. Steely Dan, Weather Report, Steps Ahead are just a few of his famous stops in an amazing career. Pianist/composer/arranger/producer/teacher Allen Farnham is no stranger to The Jazz Cruise, having joined us with various groups over the years. This year, as part of the Big Band and an All Star, we will be treated to his great talents again. Back again as a member of the Big Band and an All Star, bassist David Finck has performed with the proverbial “Who’s Who” of jazz over the years. A solid member of the New York jazz scene, David is a first call performer for all forms of music. HOF signifies membership in The Jazz Cruise Hall of Fame. The Jazz Cruise works hard to rotate its vocalists, but the obvious exception is Niki who is so good and so important to our Gospel Show and the All Stars that she is a “must” for each sailing. Her spirit and heart pervades the entire cruise. As one of the most celebrated saxophonists of the younger generation, Antonio has performed with Dizzy, Dee Dee, McCoy, Nancy Wilson and others of that stature. He has recorded multiple times as a leader as well. Former Thelonious Monk Trombone Competition winner, Andre has performed with many of the greatest jazz players in the world, including Joe Williams, Slide Hampton, the Duke Ellington Orchestra and Illinois Jacquet’s Big Band. Dick is a true legend in the world of jazz pianists. To try to list his credits, creations and kudos in this small space would not do justice to a 50+ year career that includes Jazz, Classical, Broadway and Films. We should just simply bow and applaud. Trumpeter Tony Kadleck has become one of the driving forces in our Big Band as well as a standout as an All Star. When not on the cruise, Tony is one of the most sought after trumpet players in the New York area. Tom has been the bassist for The Jazz Cruise rhythm section for as long as we can remember and he shares his great talents with us in the All Star sessions as well. The Jazz Cruise was fortunate to hook up with Tom as he was moving to New York and becoming a star. NS & A S I R C TA MUSI S L AL BAND BIG HUBERT LAWS Joining us for the first time, Hubert is an NEA Jazz Master flutist. Not that one needs to know more than that, Hubert is from a famously talented musical family and has performed with stars ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Paul McCartney. The Jazz Cruise is duly honored. LARRY KOONSE When one of your first gigs is playing guitar for Cleo Laine, you know that your career is headed for the top. Such has been Larry’s path performing along the way with a host of stars from Mel Torme to Rod Stewart. Now that is running the full gamut. JOE LABARBERA Often referred to as the “drummer’s drummer,” Joe stars in all aspects of The Jazz Cruise’s formats. His career includes the legendary Bill Evans Trio, Tony Bennett and Chuck Mangione, just to name a few of Joe’s associations. DENNIS MACKREL Dennis is one of the top drummers in jazz and performs regularly with his own group and as a sideman for the top stars. As he has done in prior years, Dennis will be part of the Big Band as well as taking his rightful turn with the All Stars. RUSSELL MALONE The Jazz Cruise heralds the return of guitarist Russell Malone. Having performed with Harry Connick, Jr. and Diana Krall, Russell is the modern extension of the heritage of great jazz guitarists such as Wes Montgomery. We have some special events planned for his talent. DICK OATTS Famously, Dick plays the same Selmer VI that his father gave him growing up in Iowa. You can catch Dick’s amazing talents both with the Big Band and in the All Star sets evidencing his versatility and skills which contributes to being a most sought after player. ERIC REED Growing from a child prodigy to one of the top jazz pianists in the world has been the life track for Eric. Selftaught for many years, formal training, touring with Wynton Marsalis and others rounded out his skills and firmly entrenched him in the world of swing and jazz. CLAUDIO RODITI One of the most recognizable performers on The Jazz Cruise is trumpeter Claudio Roditi. He has a look and a style all his own and it provides both a dramatic and loving image and sound. It is wonderful having him back on the cruise. MICHAEL RODRIGUEZ Taking up the banner of the youthful jazz performer, thirty-something trumpeter/composer Michael Rodriguez is making his maiden appearance on The Jazz Cruise as a member of the Big Band and as an All Star. Be sure to welcome him. BOB SHEPPARD Known throughout the jazz world, particularly heralded by fellow saxophonists for his style and accomplishments, Bob be taking his first turn performing on The Jazz Cruise, both as a member of the Big Band and as an All Star. GARY SMULYAN In the past five years or so, we cannot recall any jazz poll that has not named Gary as the world’s #1 baritone saxophone player. As the host of our late night jam session, this year in our Birdland Lounge at the Ocean Bar, you can really enjoy his unique talents. TIERNEY SUTTON The Jazz Cruise is thrilled to reprise the talents of this amazing vocalist. As a 7 Time Grammy® nominee, Tierney has headlined shows at the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall. She is appearing this year on the cruise with Hubert Laws and Larry Koonse. SCOTT WENDHOLT Scott is a much in demand trumpeter on the New York jazz scene, including top big bands such as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Bob Mintzer big band, John Fedchock NY Big Band and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. He is also a busy sideman and has his own recordings. JENNIFER WHARTON For the past few years, Jennifer has taken on the formidable role of bass trombonist for the Big Band. An avid runner, Jennifer can also be found as part of many of the most important bands and ensembles in the New York and the world of Jazz. PERFORMING GROUPS CYRILLE AIMÉE Raised in France by a French father and a Dominican mother, Cyrille began singing gypsy music and on street corners. During those days, she entered and won first place in the vocal competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival, which included the financing of an album as part of the prize. Her rise to fame since that time has been meteroric. MONTY ALEXANDER It has been too long since Monty performed on The Jazz Cruise. The excitement that his piano brings is matched only by the skill and beauty with which he expresses himself. Monty has volunteered to perform in various configurations this week and will present some of his most famous and amazing tunes and arrangements. CLAYTON BROTHERS QUINTET John (HOF) and Jeff (HOF) have contributed to The Jazz Cruise since its inception and their quintet, a true collaboration of stars, is a pillar of the cruise and always one of the most beloved performing groups of the cruise. We salute their contributions to jazz in terms of teaching, philanthropy and mentorship. REGINA CARTER TRIO Regina may be the foremost jazz violinist of her generation. Certainly she is a captivating, special and amazingly talented performer capable of playing jazz standards and so much more. Her sets are always captivating, often haunting and always amazing. The Jazz Cruise is so honored to be able to present this unique talent. FREDDY COLE & TRIO Nonsequam, Freddy (HOF) may just be the most beloved vocalist to ever sail on The Jazz Cruise. He will be the mainstay of the Birdland Lounge in the Ocean Bar, where he will host and curate the late night activities of the cruise for three amazing nights. By popular demand, Freddy will have an earlier performance as well, so everyone can share in his magic. HOF signifies membership in The Jazz Cruise Hall of Fame. JOEY DEFRANCESCO TRIO No one plays the Hammond B3 like Joey D. But though that is his calling card, Joey sings, plays trumpet and does whatever else it takes to create spectacular sets noted for their energy, spirit and just plain fun. You cannot walk away from a Joey D performance without a song in your heart and a smile on your face. BENNY GOLSON QUARTET There are legends and there are legends. It does not get any more famous that Benny. An NEA Jazz Master for saxophone, Benny has composed some of the most recorded jazz tunes in the world and shared his magic with the likes of Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Earl Bostic and Art Blakey. When they write the book of jazz, there will a full chapter on Benny Golson. JEFF HAMILTON TRIO Watching other drummers study Jeff’s (HOF) technique and talents is a case of admiration and acclaim intersecting envy. Clearly one of the top drummers in the world, Jeff plays drums as if they were a Stradivarius. Tamir Hendelman and Christoph Luty complete this one of a kind trio and each of them will see other duties during the week as they have become, in their own right stars of the cruise. CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE TRIO This is the first voyage for the multiple Grammy® award winning bassist and that alone is reason to attend each and every one of his sets. Christian’s resume belies his relatively young age having performed with Freddie Hubbard, Ray Brown, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock and others. A true virtuoso, he has appeared on more than 300 recordings during his 21 year career. MARCUS MILLER Another multiple Grammy® award winner, bassist Marcus Miller served as the Music Director for Miles Davis, Luther Vandross and David Sanborn, as well as appearing on more than 500 recordings, composing music for movies, other performers and for his own band over the years. His accomplishments belie his age as he began this amazing career at 15. S PER IN M R FO UP O R GG HOUSTON PERSON QUARTET Houston (HOF) is the classic “old school” saxophonist, only when he plays; everyone listens, learns and loves what they hear. Famously performing with Etta Jones for many, many years, Houston has been the named leader of bands on more than 70 recordings and continues today, at age 80, to be a relevant and important source of jazz. JOHN PIZZARELLI QUARTET Ever dapper and hip, John can win over any music fan who takes the time to listen. By combining the highest level of musicianship on guitar and vocals with friendliness and accessibility, John just piles up the fans as he crisscrosses the country and the world. With his world class band to support him, John’s shows are standing room only at all times. GREGORY PORTER The Brooklyn based singer with the rich baritone and the ever present Kangol hat has taken the jazz world and last year’s sailing of The Jazz Cruise by storm. With a couple of Grammy® Awards under his belt now, we look forward to hearing Gregory’s latest tunes as well as his take on the American Songbook. HOF signifies membership in The Jazz Cruise Hall of Fame. ARTURO SANDOVAL BAND Arturo is one of The Jazz Cruise’s most revered and beloved performers. He commands the stage and delivers a sound that is instantaneously recognizable. A true virtuoso, besides his famous trumpet, he can sing, play piano, drums and percussion. From his famous life story to the sound of his horn to the laughter he shares, Arturo is truly larger than life. BYRON STRIPLING QUARTET No doubt that this trumpeter/vocalist is the consummate performer. Byron can do it all, whether it is a big band sound, working with his trio or creating his famous themes such as the Cotton Club and his tributes to other artists from the past. Gentlemanly and suave, you cannot but help to revel in Byron’s superb talent, amazing presence and loving nature. PHIL WOODS QUINTET Phil Woods is an NEA Jazz Master saxophonist. In many respects that is all that you need to say, but Phil’s contribution to jazz goes beyond being a monster player with credits as long as the eye can see. Labeled the “New Bird” as a young performer, Phil’s life has been captured on film as well as on the bandstand. PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE SUNDAY, JANUARY 25 • Ft.
