MAY 2016 Fine PRINT STOW-MUNROE FALLS PUBLIC LIBRARY TRACK —by Christina Getrost, Teen Librarian A re you a voracious reader? Do you sometimes have trouble remembering if you’ve already read a particular book? If you are like me, perhaps you can’t recall if it was Book 2 or Book 3 in the series that you read. There are many ways to keep track of the books you’ve read, from the traditional to the more technology-based. One way is to keep a handwritten Book Journal, writing down each title, author, and salient points about the plot or characters. Book journals can be anything from an inexpensive school notebook to a fancier bound journal. Or you could use a blank paper address book (from the pre-cell phone days!), because it contains alphabetical indentations for those who want to keep their book list in alphabetical order, either by title or author. For those who want to type, not write, you can use a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet (or Google Sheet) to list your books, date read or purchased, and so forth. This has the advantage of being sortable, so that you can rearrange the list. Spreadsheets can be printed, or uploaded to email or cloud storage sites such as Google Drive. Personally, I go one step further to keep my book journals organized, since I need to frequently refer back to them for my work. I add sticky tabs for each month. Then, combining both the handwritten and tech methods, at the end of the year I type up an Excel spreadsheet and print the list as an index to my journal. —continued on page 2 Inside this issue click to advance to any section Movie Night!..................................................... 3 Staff Picks......................................................... 4 Streaming Music!............................................. 5 Teen Talk........................................................... 6 Just for Kids...................................................... 6 Staff Pets.......................................................... 7 Classics Book Discussion................................. 7 Libraries Transform......................................... 8 Upcoming Events............................................. 9 Library News..................................................10 2 Fine PRINT • MAY 2016 There are several websites you can turn to for help in remembering your books for you, including our own library’s catalog, KOHA. If you log into Your Account on KOHA with your library card number and PIN, you can access Your Reading History. This shows a list of all of the books you have checked out of the library going back at least a year. The two most popular book-cataloging websites are Goodreads.com and LibraryThing.com, also available as apps for your smartphone or tablet. The site will bring up a picture of the book’s cover and all of the pertinent information about that book. You then simply add the book to your “Shelf” (Goodreads) or your “Collection” (LibraryThing) and give it a review, if you wish. As you add more books to your virtual collections, you can organize them by genre (“Science Fiction Shelf” or “Mysteries Collection”). On LibraryThing, you can add tags to help describe the book, such as “World War II fiction” or “Cozy mystery.” Both Goodreads and LibraryThing enable you to add Friends or Contacts, adding a social aspect to the process. Then you can see what your friends are reading and can give each other recommendations, read reviews and add comments. You can also form reading groups with other users. For a hands-on demonstration of either Goodreads or LibraryThing, feel free to ask one of our reference staff members at the Information Desk. Whichever method you end up using, happy reading! • M ! Staff Pets Let's Meet Amanda's Kitties! Amanda is the Assistant Head of the Circulation Department. In her spare time, Sheeva and Loki just turned one year old. They were adopted in October 2015 by Amanda and her husband, Logan, from a library patron who mentioned that a stray cat had kittens on her property. They are from the same litter even though they don’t look much alike – Sheeva is a grayish brown with black markings; Loki is tannish orange with white markings. Sheeva can be the sweetest cuddler one minute, and a feisty, unstoppable tornado the next. She loves her toys and will jump and do flips in the air when trying to catch them. Loki is usually terrified of everyone, unlike his comic book villain namesake, and has recently started to adjust to his new family. Although he does not want to let his parents out of his sight and loves being brushed, he pretends that he does not like to cuddle. Their favorite activities include staring out of the living room window on their hind legs, eating, and hunting each other, especially at 2 AM across the hardwood floors. • she loves to spend time with her family and kitties, read, travel, research genealogy, and watch endless amounts of Netflix with her husband. Loki (L) and Sheeva (R) Introducing our new Classics Book Discussion! We have been hearing great feedback about the fundraiser and its positive impact on our community, none of which would be possible without all of your help and support of the library. Stay tuned for photos! Playaway Lanchpads Library Foundation • Have you checked out one of the Playaway Launchpads available at Spike's Place? We have nearly 100 different devices that vary in topic, intended use and intended audience. These are preloaded tablets for children to check out for 2 weeks. Sometimes they focus more on educational topics, and others are geared more toward entertainment. These tablets include a charger. The tablets cannot be modified, and downloading is not enabled as part of the software. They are designed to include everything you need! We have these devices in the same place as the new books, on top of the shelves in bright, orange boxes. Talk a children's librarian for more information!
