Our “Daly” Bread
“O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” – Psalm 8:1
MAJESTIC—I recently returned from a family
vacation up to Yosemite National Park. What
an incredibly beautiful place! I hadn’t been to
Yosemite in 30 years and had forgotten how
breathtaking it really is. Indeed, I would use
the psalmist’s word ‘majestic’.
While there were many memorable
hikes and experiences in our four days in the
park, the one I will cherish the most is the hike
to Glacier Point that my oldest son, Brendan,
and I did together early on a Sunday morning.
The Yosemite Valley was quiet and still except
for the sounds of the birds seemingly singing
their own songs of praise that morning. The
hike was called the “Four Mile Hike”, but it
was really 4.8 miles. Not a great distance, but
it also involved a 3,200 ft. gain in elevation. I must confess that when we got to the bottom of the trail and
looked up my first thought was “there is no way I’m going to make it up that mountain!” But I gave myself
permission to take my time and to stop along the way to enjoy the views of the valley below. Each time we
stopped to take in the beauty of it all I couldn’t help but think of that verse from Psalm 8:1 (see above). The
steep granite cliffs all around us…Yosemite Falls pouring over the side of one cliff just across the valley and
Nevada Falls doing the same on another…Half Dome reaching up to the heavens…the lush green meadows
below…and the two of us with the trail and the views virtually to ourselves. I may not have been in church
that morning, but I was definitely worshiping our amazing God!
As we neared the top we heard a loud thud that stopped both of us in our tracks. Neither of us knew
what it was…that is until we walked a little farther and could see a car parked on the street in the distance.
Our silent journey had come to an end and we exited the forest into the parking lot atop Glacier Point. In
fact, the rest of our group drove up there to meet us shortly after we finished our hike to enjoy the beautiful
views and to spare us the hike back down the mountain. One of them asked, “why would you do that
grueling hike when you could have just driven up the mountain with us?” It was a good question that I’m not
sure I had a good answer for. It really was one of those “you had to be there” experiences. How do you
explain to someone that it wasn’t really about the final destination as much as it was the journey? And how
do you describe the joy of walking alone with your son up a steep incline that both literally and figuratively
would take your breath away? And how do you give voice to the sense of awe and wonder and even worship
that emanated from deep within during the two and a half hours we had to think and reflect with no noise,
distractions or voices to interfere? The answer is you don’t. You just smile and say something like, “I don’t
know, but I would do it again.”
Appreciating the ‘majestic’ nature of our God takes time, awareness, and often it takes an opportunity
to admire the natural beauty that surrounds us (even right here in San Diego)…gifts given us to enjoy by the
Master Artist and Creator. I encourage you to make the time this spring/summer and to find the place where
you, too, can be inspired to proclaim the words uttered by the psalmist over 2,500 years ago: “O Lord, our
Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

— IN THE LIFE OF OUR CHURCH —
Volume 68 Issue 5
We were blessed to
welcome Michael
Waxman as the newest member of our church family. Michael
has been worshiping with us for a few years, but made a decision
earlier this year to become fully involved in the life of the
church. He has volunteered his time to work on projects around
the church, participated in our weekly Bible Study groups, and
even served as a counselor at Feb Camp with our high schoolers.
Michael has a passionate desire to grow deeper in his faith, has a
servant’s heart, and has an infectious joy. So we are happy to
welcome Michael more fully into our PBCC family!

Several of the “crafty”
women of PBCC would
like to host a knitting group one Saturday a month
from 10:30am-12:30pm at the church. Please let
Andi Sanders (760-717-3331) or Lucie Sovinsky (858483-0357) know if you are interested in learning to
knit some simple projects. Projects can be for
yourself or charity. You do not need prior
knowledge of knitting to join us! We look forward
to knitting and fellowshipping together!

In Memoriam
George Podhorsky, Sr. died last Friday after being
placed under hospice care recently for congestive
heart failure. George was a charter member of our
church going back to the church’s beginnings in
1949. Four generations of Podhorskys have made
PBCC their church home ever since. A memorial
service to honor George has been scheduled for
Saturday, June 13th, at 11:30am. His family would
welcome you to come join us as we give thanks for his
life and as we reaffirm the hope and promise of new
life we believe is his through Jesus Christ.
George Podhorsky, Sr.
February 1, 1922 — May 22, 2015
We just learned of the death of Kay Jones as the
newsletter was going to print. She died while under
hospice care in her home in Arizona after a lengthy
battle with cancer. Kay and Bob were married here at
PBCC and even joined the church thereafter as a way
of claiming PBCC as their San Diego church home.
They have been very generous supporters of our
Heavenly Manna ministry and were grateful to have
an opportunity to help with the distribution of the
burritos to the homeless during their last visit to San
Diego. Please keep Bob in your prayers. Those
wishing to send a card or note can do so at the
following address:

— MINISTRY BEYOND OUR DOORS —
Tijuana House Build
Church of the Valley and FCC Burbank have invited
us to join them for another Tijuana House Build
through Project Mercy on Saturday, May 30th. We
will meet at the church at 6:15am and carpool to the
border where we will meet the COV group at
7:30am. We will return to PBCC later that evening.
And remember, passports are required!
Music Notes
Thank you to Carlo Cuervo for
leading singing and worship with us at
the recent PBCC Family Camp in Julian. There was
a lot of music involved, some prepared and some
spontaneous. The Western theme allowed for
mixing in plenty of Cowboy songs with many
worship favorites.
Looking to the future, it's time to start
preparing your skit, song, monolgue, act, or whatever
for this summer's PBCC Talent Show. The PB Praise
Team will once again be available for live
accompaniment for your musical selection, so contact
us as soon as possible to ensure we have everything
you need to be the star. This is a great opportunity
to share that skit you saw or presented at scout or
church camp, so if you aren't a singer or musician
don't feel there isn't a spot for you. The show will
take place on a Sunday evening in August, with the
exact date still to be determined. Plan on being there
for another great PBCC family show!

CCSA
The CA$H4FOOD project is happening June 15June 30th. CCSA is collecting funds to be used
exclusively for purchasing food to supplement the
EFP government food that they already receive. The
government supplies, while useful, are often not
balanced in nutrition. Using these funds, CCSA
shoppers can get other needed supplies at the food
bank for rock bottom prices often including fresh
items. Any amount is appreciated as it all adds up!
You can give on-line at CCSAsandiego.org or
through our church, but please mark your donation
“CA$H4FOOD”. Thanks for your generosity!
CCSA has an urgent need of clothes for children 5
and older. They have enough toddler clothes. They
also immediately need men’s pants (waist 30-34) and
reading glasses 150+.
Women’s Retreat
Get-Away Weekend - Leave the city behind and
renew your spirit in the fellowship of other women of
faith. Not only will you enjoy the fresh mountain air,
but you will be able to attend meaningful study
sessions, relax on your own time and participate in
joyous worship. Mark your calendars for this year’s
retreat at Loch Leven on October 2nd—4th. See
Andi Sanders if you have any questions.
