“Hina Dolls of the Mitsui Family” is an annual exhibition marking the coming of spring in Nihonbashi. In
this exhibition, Hina dolls and miniature furniture treasured by the wives and daughters of the Mitsui family
are on display.
The exhibition features luxurious pieces once belonging to Motoko (1869-1946), the wife of Mitsui
Takamine (10th generation head of the Kita Mitsui family); Toshiko (1901-1976), the wife of Mitsui
Takakimi (11th head); Ms. Asano Hisako (1933-), the only daughter of Takakimi; and Okiko (1900-1980),
the wife of Mitsui Takahisa (9th head of the Isarago Mitsui family). A highlight is the gorgeous display of Hina
dolls on a 3-meter wide five-tiered stand specially made by Ōki Heizō V of Maruhei, Ōki Doll Company
in Kyoto.
Thematic exhibition “Satsuma Ware in the Mitsui Family Collection” features Satsuma ware implements
and tableware with overglaze enamels in exhibition room 7. In rooms 1-3 is a display of tea utensil
masterpieces from our collection, as well as a series of paintings called “The Seasons and Their Fashions”
by Mizuno Toshikata in room 6.
