Since the very first scholarship of $500 to one person, it has grown to over 145 recipients receiving over $125,000 in the past 20 years. For those of you who came out that day, all I can say is “I am sorry,” and hopefully it will not happen again. At our June meeting, we honored Arlene Newcomer for all her hard work for our Retiree Chapter. Arlene and her husband, Carl, are the ones who come early to prepare our coffee and drinks. She takes the responsibility of keeping track of all our luncheon supplies, preparing the set-up of the luncheon and so much more. “Thank you Arlene.” The Local 598 Retiree Golf Outing sign-ups are going well. For those golfers who want to sign up, August 10th is approaching fast. The outing will be held at Fenton Farms Golf Club. The cost is $140 per four-man team. Teams need to get their forms and money in early due to the scheduled shutdown times. The first 36 teams will be accepted. As always, there will be prizes for the top teams. There will also be several door prizes given away during the banquet. Hole tee-offs will be strictly by POTLIGHT S lottery. You will find an entry form in this edition of the Eye Opener. If you have any questions, contact myself or Thurman Ross at the Union Hall at 238-4605, ext 18. Jeff Wright (below), Genesee County Drain Commissioner, came to our June meeting to answer questions about the new water pipeline. Members were most interested in when the pipeline construction will begin. Jeff informed them that at this time construction is scheduled to begin in the fall. The Summerfest was a huge success. I have not seen Union City Field look so good since it was new. That alone was extremely rewarding and made me proud to be a member of Local 598. VicePresident Ryan Buchalski was responsible for coordinating the Summerfest with GM and other entities. Financial Secretary Rick Beardslee, along with retirees Cliff Sedar, Jesse Mata and Larry Smothers, were responsible for cleaning up and sprucing up Union City Field. Accolades to all those who helped make this event a success. Our fall trip will be scheduled for late October. There is no date set yet, but it will be in the Eye Opener when the details are available. The petitions are still available to sign to protect union bargaining rights. These petitions are of great importance. Please take the time to come out and sign. If you are interested in signing the petition, they are still available at the Region 1-C office from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at the Union Hall during the weeks we are not shut down. “We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.” – J K Rowling RETIREE CHAPTER COMING ATTRACTIONS JULY, 2012 – NO Chapter Meeting JULY 3, 2012 – RDG Excursion – Soaring Eagle and SEE YOU at our NEXT RETIREE FUNCTION!
