The municipality of Venlo is divided in four
parts by the hard borders of the Meuse and
the N556 highway. In the current situation,
the periphery cuts into one of these parts. To
reconstruct the urban structure, these four
parts need to be connected.

Because of the regional influence of VVVVenlo, the new center have to be connected
to this region, besides the connection to the
city of Venlo. Also the internal connectivity on
the site has to be established. In this way the
new event center will be connected to three
different levels. The housing quarter, the city
and the region.

Because of their importance, the historic layers
need to be part of the design. Two layers of
Venlo history, the former fortress Saint Michiel
and the current barrack buildings, were really
that important for the development of the city
of Venlo, that it’s just logical to make a revival
of these structures possible. It will enrich the
plan and for sure the city of Venlo.

A pedestrian / bicycle bridge connects the
event center to the historic city center of Venlo
on the other side of the Meuse. This bridge is
more than a way from point A to point B. It is a
chain, which joins all varying public activities
in Venlo. When arrived in the new centre, the
public route is confronted with the hard facade
of the soccer stadium, where it explodes into
different public paths.

Situated next to the commercial part of the
plan give the office people a good place to
stay during lunchtimes and ‘after work drinks’.

The former assault course (stormbaan) is the
basis of the way the ‘connection strip’ to the
region is designed. The military character
is reinterprated to frighten the visiting
supporters while walking from station to the
stadium.
Added functions on the strip make the area
working as a station. In this way the Blerick
station will be a place of stay, next to the usual
place of move.

The third strip makes the connection between
the event centre and the housing quarter
we propose on the north side of the project
area. This quarter is supposed to attract new
people to Venlo. Office people who are now
only working in the city, but also new starters
and young families can find their houses in
this new housing area.
Different kind of people means different kind
of houses. The quarter provides all different
new inhabitants of Venlo the house they wish:
an apartments in a big urban block, a semidetached house in a park or a ...
The strip that connects the event centre with
the housing quarter cuts through the different
typologies and binds them all together.

PUBLICPROGRAMME
Because of the historical importance, the
structures of the former fortress Saint Michiel
revive in this new centre. The three different
strips end all up in the star structure of the
former fortress, where an area full of public
functions form the final link to bind the strips
together.
A public programme makes the revival of the
historic structure possible. The former fortress
walls are reinterpretated and function as a pool
in the park, a canyonlike shopping centre, an
external part of a museum, and more. At the
intersections of the stips and the fortress, the
different characters are defined by the public
space, using the historic layers.

The new stadium for VVV-Venlo is not a kind of
standard way stadium, as everbody expects. A
usual way stadium can be seen as a pressure
cooker: the temperature and the pressure is
rising during the game. With breaking open
the ringform stadium, the supporters will get
more ‘fresh air’ and will cool down. A public
route is going trough the open stadium, so
that the field is getting more public than it
usually is. Because of this the whole stadium
had to be seen as a multifunctional public
space. This public square, the new event
centre for Venlo, gives a lot of possibilies of
use: concerts, theatre performances, soccer
games, markets, carnaval fairs, et cetera. The
two historic layers, the lefovers of the fortress
and the existing barracks are part of the new
stadium and give it unique qualities.
