Agriculture Innovation and Entrepreneurship For his consistently astute application of innovativeness and entrepreneurial spirit in the creation of successful business enterprises in urban pest control and numerous ‘green’ agricultural technologies that significantly contributed in the country’s efforts to attain sustainable economic development. ROGELIO D. COLTING Higher Education Administration For his outstanding achievements as president of the Benguet State University, enabling the institution’s distinctive development which made it as one of the top 20 state colleges and universities in the country. For his visionary and innovative leadership, giving organic agriculture a unique focus in instruction, research and extension, and sustainable ecological development of the Cordillera region. ANITA L. FRIO International Service and Extension For her distinguished performance as an economist in the International Rice Research Institute’s (IRRI) farming systems research and extension program, especially in integrating crops, livestock and fish production. For her effective leadership in helping other Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research training centers in developing gender-sensitive training programs; and for her successes in IRRI’s Course Decentralization Project that promoted in-country training programs, thus enhancing the multiplier effect of IRRI’s numerous training courses. ARNULFO G. GARCIA International Service and Cooperation For his outstanding performance in the International Rice Research Institute’s rice research capacity building in Myanmar; for his success in obtaining support from International Development Research Center, German Non-Governmental Organization, and Food and Agriculture Organization, and other substantive contributions in increasing rice production in the Philippines; for his efficiency in organizing and implementing Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture’s (SEARCA) Research and Development international conferences, policy fora, and regional workshops; and for initiating the Seed Fund for Research and Training that provided financial support to young researchers and scientists in the different Southeast Asian countries and who are conducting researches relevant to Southeast Asia and within SEARCA’s priority programs. CRISANTO S. GUALBERTO II Peace and Development For his outstanding contributions to socioeconomic development of the communities surrounding his successful agricultural and business enterprises in Batangas Province and elsewhere, thus ensuring peace and order in those areas. Moreover, in both government service and private endeavors since graduation from UPLB up to the present, he has promoted environmental conservation including wildlife protection, planting of native trees, and prevention of dynamite fishing along with real efforts for the rural poor. PIO A. JAVIER Extension in Crop Protection For being an accomplished professional in research and extension, untiringly disseminating the results of crop protection research and technology to benefit resource-poor farmers; for his technical competence, particularly in the field of entomology, leading to his multiple awards for his expertise; and for being a champion for extension, technology transfer, and information dissemination, providing greater opportunities for farmer clients to obtain higher productivity. SINESIO M. MARIANO Social Forestry For his significant contribution in strengthening and developing institutions and building capabilities of people in community-based, integrated coastal and forest resource management systems in the Philippines as well as in developing countries of Asia and Africa through innovative teaching and extension approaches. RODOLFO A. PANINGBATAN Research Administration For leading the applied research and development needs and activities of one of the world’s most trusted name in the food industry; for guiding and coordinating the growing of export quality banana and pineapple not only in the field of plant pathology but in other fields as well, leading to yields considered as the highest in the world; and for spearheading Del Monte’s ISO Quality Management System certification, the certification of banana and pineapple farms under the Global Gap standards, and the certification of organic banana production by the United States Department of Agriculture. LEONCIA L. TANDANG Research and Development For her significant contributions in helping the country increase crop productivity and attain food sufficiency through years of plant breeding research, leading to the development of root and vegetable crops, especially snap beans and garden pea which have been recommended by the National Seed Industry Council for commercialization, thus benefiting vegetable farmers nationwide; for playing an important role in the crafting of the Philippine National Standards for Fruit and Vegetable Crops and the development of the 2020 Strategic Plan of the Vegetable Crops Industry; and for being an effective mentor to future generation of scientists. ANABELLA B. TULIN Research and Extension For her outstanding researches in soil science which resulted in valuable guidelines in crop nutrient management for more profitable vegetable and root crop production especially in marginal uplands; for her numerous, well-organized extension activities with help from local government units, reaching out to more than 3,000 farmers in Leyte, Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon and Davao Oriental, enabling them to increase vegetable and root crop production throughout the year; and for her successful dissemination of the results of Research and Development in national and international conferences, enabling her to receive numerous research paper awards. LATEYA P. BUCOY Creative Writing As the most prolific creative writer in the University, Professor Layeta P. Bucoy is to date the most awarded on the national level. No one comes close to her string of Carlos Palanca Awards for Literature. She also won in prestigious scriptwriting contests such as the ABS-CBN Scriptwriting Contest and was recognized by the Gawad Urian Awards. She has represented the country in the Asia Playwrights Conference in Australia and Japan, and in the International Women Playwrights Conference in India. Her creative works have come out on national publications and her plays have been stage in various venues locally and abroad. Most recently she was recognized by the UP System as UP Artist II for her productivity as an artist. MARIA FE F. DECLARO Community Health Dr. DeClaro is a medical doctor, teacher, researcher, community health collaborator and advocate. She served the community as Medical Officer of the Department of Social Work and Development where she took care of the health and well being of children at risk. She was also an independent collaborator clinician for the health and welfare of Senior Citizens in Makati, Quezon Province, Zamboanga, Davao and Cagayan de Oro. She founded Global Mission For Women's Health, an accredited helping organization by DSWD and Securities and Exchange Commission to help those with HIV/ AIDS through education and nutritional capacitation. As a medical educator, she taught at De La Salle University, served as Head of the Department of Family and Community Medicine and concurrently the Medical Director of the Medial Industrial Clinic - Medical Center Manila and Dean of the Practical Nursing and Allied Health Profession of the Philippine National Training College. Under the United Nations Development Program, she recently served as Medical Professor in Mekelle University in Ethiopia. As a researcher, she has published several papers with the DLSU Journal of Medicine among others. She has written a book on the medical and nutritional benefits of Spirulina, a guide book for Para-medical students and self-instructional materials on the Human Anatomy for medical students. ARTURO Y. PACIFICADOR, JR. Instruction Dr. Pacificador is a dedicated teacher, researcher and administrator. While at UPLB, he rose from the ranks and went on to become the first Director of the Institute of Statistics in 1998. He is recognized as an expert in sampling and survey. He made significant contributions in the design of several national household surveys conducted by the Food and National Research Institute and the Bureau of Labor and Employment. He also served as consultant for the United Nations Children's Fund, World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank. Recently, he was comnissioned to train and consult on surveys in Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Afganistan , and China. He serves as member of various national technical committee of the National Statistical Coordination Board. He also serves as member of the Board of Directors of the Philippine Statistical Association and the International Association of Survey Statisticians. He is currently an associate professor at the Department of Mathematics of De La Salle University Manila. CESAR L. VILLANOY Research Dr. Villanoy is a professor and oceanographer at the Marine Science Institute of the University of the Philippines Diliman. He was recognized by the Department of Science and Technology as Outstanding Young Scientist in hysical Oceanography in 1997 and the UP System as UP Scientist 1 in 2009-2011 for his productivity in Marine Science research. He has written over 68 journal articles published in both local and international peer reviewed journals. HENRY C. BURGOS Film Making For his sensitive and humanistic application of development communication praxis in film making. As a young writer in the indpendent film industry, he ahs already managed to receive recognition from both local and international critics. In 2012 and 2013, respectively, he won the Metro Manila Film Festival’s Best Original Story Award and the Gawad Pasado’s Pinakapasadong Istorya for Thy Womb, which starred the country’s Superstar, Ms. Nora Aunor. The film, directed by Cannes’ Best Director Brillante Mendoza, also bagged other awards such as Best Film in various national and international award-giving bodies. In 2010, he won Best Screenplay in the Skip City International Digital Cinema Festival in Japan for Bakal Boys. His other films, Busong, Bakal Boys, and Painted Reality, were also critically acclaimed in various international film festivals including Cannes, Brussels, Seoul, Thessaloniki, Vancouver, Barcelona, Valencia, Formentera, and Guanajuato, among others. DULCE MARIE SARET International Communication For her exemplary performance in the practice of development communication in various private organizations and international development agencies. Dulce Marie Saret is one of the most influential development leaders aged 40 and under, a young trailblazer in using communication to push forward the development agenda. She is among the 40 Under 40 International Development Leaders of 2013 recognized by Devex, an international organization that facilitates development aid or foreign assistance. JOEL L. CUELLO Global Biosystems Engineering Education and Research For his technical expertise and outstanding contributions in both engineering and biology which helped promote the application of engineering design in various agricultural and biological systems, with emphasis on optimizing biological and agricultural productivity while fostering resource sustainability. For his contributions in global engineering education: as a Professor of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering & Director of the Global Institute for Strategic Agriculture in Dry Lands (GISAD) at The University of Arizona,USA.; as a lifetime Visiting Professor at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China; as a Faculty Fellow at the Innovation Center of the Ateneo de Manila University; and as a valuable resource person in redesigning the UPLB-CEAT Agricultural Engineering to the current Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering curricular program. JESUS V. MELGAR Food Technology and Manufacturing For his essential role in the planning, installation, and early-stage operation of the Food Technology Pilot Plant. For his instrumental role in conceiving and spearheading the landmark production of Philippine canned tuna, leading to its development as a competitive export in the world market. For his leadership in a still immature Philippine food processing industry that brought about modern equipment, updated methods, and clear guidelines on product standards; and For having represented the Philippines with goodwill in international discussions concerning the viability of Philippine food products for world export and in providing expert advice on a foreign country’s offshore fish-handling facilities. CLARISSA YVONNE J. DOMINGO VETERINARY RESEARCH In recognition of her achievements as Researcher in Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology. She established the Incidence and Risk Factors of Zoonotic Protozoa among Smallholder Farms in Aurora Province specifically caprine, bubaline and human Cryptosporidiosis. She helped identify the Endoand Ectoparasites of the Philippine Rice Field Rat and co-authored the article “Zoonotic Parasites of Rats in the Philippines” in the book Philippine Rats: Ecology and Management published by the Philippine Rice Research Institute. In the Geo-Resource Survey of Integrated Aquaculture and Livestock/Poultry Production System in the Philippines, she co-authored the Policy Brief: Specialist Panel Review on Livestock and Poultry Manure Use in Aquaculture in the Philippines. She established the Epidemiology and Ecological Factors of Fascioliasis and its Recommended Snail Control in Nueva Ecija and co-authored the Expert Panel Recommendations for Surra Control in the Philippines. She obtained her Master of Public Health in 1999 and Doctor of Public Health in 2010 from U.P. She is presently Head of the College Research Council, College of Veterinary Science and Medicine, Central Luzon State University. She was 2010 Outstanding Veterinarian in Research Awardee of the Veterinary Practitioners Association of the Philippines and 2012 Outstanding Veterinarian in Education of the Philippine Veterinary Medical Association. ANTON MARI H. LIM VETERINARY PRACTICE In recognition of his distinguished career in veterinary practice: As owner and Veterinary Surgeon of Waltac Veterinary Clinic, Zamboanga City, he helped his patient hero dog “Kabang” get reconstructive surgery at the University of California at Davis Veterinary School Hospital, U.S.A. with the assistance of the Animal Welfare Coalition, Philippine Air Lines and individual donors from 47 countries. He is Coordinator of Tzu Chi Foundation – Zamboanga Liaison Office where he organizes and leads medical and dental missions to indigent areas in Zamboanga City and neighbouring provinces. He recently co-founded and serves as President of the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation Inc. which provides transportation, medical help and economic support to communities where students are often forced to swim to and from school and is Chief Implementor of the Zamboanga Funds for Little Kids. He was awarded the highest Rotary International Service Above Self Award in 2007, Multiple Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow and recipient of many other Rotarian Awards. He is Commissioner of the EDSA People Power Commission, Office of the President, and Lead Convenor, People Power Volunteer Center, Zamboanga Peninsula/Fuerza Amarillo. He was Top Ten in the 1989 Veterinary Licensure Examination. He is a member of the Philippine Veterinary Medical Association, Philippine Animal Hospital Association and UP Alumni Association . CEFERINO P. MAALA VETERINARY EDUCATION In recognition of his distinguished career in veterinary education: He is presently Professor 12, UPLB College of Veterinary Medicine. He obtained his PhD from Cornell University, USA in 1983 and his Master of Veterinary Science from University of Sydney, Australia in 1977. Among his numerous awards are UP Scientist Productivity Award in 2006-09, 16 UP System International Publication Awards, 2002 UPLB Outstanding Researcher Award, 2007 National Research Council of the Philippines Achievement Award and 2004 Outstanding Professional in Veterinary Medicine, Professional Regulation Commission. His peers recognized him with the Philippine Veterinary Medical Association Distinguished Professional Service Award in 2004, Philippine Society of Animal Science Distinguished Fellow Award in 2006 and recently, the 2013 Veterinary Practitioners Association of the Philippines Outstanding Practitioner in the Academe. He was Visiting Research Professor at Hiroshima University, Japan, Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation in October 2000-April 2001. He is awardee of 7 UP Professorial Chairs and served as Thesis Adviser to 109 undergraduate veterinary students. He authored the Student’s Guide to the Dissection of the Horse and Student’s Guide to the Dissection of the Ruminants and co-authored the Philippine Association of Laboratory Animal Science Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals in the Philippines. LINA B. SANTIAGOPOLICARPIO AGRIBUSINESS In recognition of her distinguished career in agribusiness: After a stint with livestock integrator Vitarich Corporation where she served as Farm Veterinarian, Technical Services Supervisor and Head, Diagnostic Laboratory, she joined the multinational company Eli Lilly/Elanco in 1992 as Animal Science Field Research Coordinator. She quickly went up the corporate ladder and landed the top Philippine post as Country Director in 2009. Recently, she was appointed Regional Technical Director for Asia-Pacific. Since 2010, she is Member of the Hunger Advisory Board of Elanco Global Team. She served as Chairman and Member of the Board of Veterinary Medicine, Professional Regulations Commission, President, Philippine College of Poultry Practitioners, Vice President, Philippine Veterinary Drug Association, Treasurer and Director, Philippine Veterinary Medical Association and President, UP CVM Alumni Association. The first Philippine recipient of the Lilly Values Award in January 1999, she was also Elanco Employee of 2003 and Elanco Office Manager of 2003, 2005 and 2007. NEDEÑA C. TORRALBA GOVERNMENT SERVICE In recognition of her distinguished career in government service as President and Vice-Chairman, Board of Regents, of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela since 2005, Officer-In-Charge and Vice-Chairman, Board of Regents, Valenzuela City Polytechnic College since 2008, Administrator, Dr. Pio Valenzuela Scholarship Program and Officer-In-Charge, Valenzuela City Center for the Performing Arts. Previously, as Executive Vice President, De La Salle- Araneta University, she facilitated the smooth transition of the university to become the 8th member school of the De La Salle Educational System. Earlier in her professional career, she was Farm Manager-Veterinarian, Jovic Farms Inc., a successful automated integrated Broiler Breeder Operations in Quezon Province. She obtained her M.S. in Veterinary Pathology from UP in 1985, M.S. in Veterinary Clinical Pathology, Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Japan in 1988 and Master in Business Administration, Ateneo de Manila University in 1982. She is Charter Fellow, Philippine College of Poultry Practitioners, Charter Member and Vice President 2000-05 Veterinary and Comparative Pathologists Society of the Philippines, Life Member and Board Director 2001-06 Philippine Veterinary Medical Association and Life Member UP Alumni Association. She is also Platinum Awardee of the Philippine National Red Cross. JOSE V. CAMACHO JR. Higher Education Governance For his dedicated and commendable service as Chair of the Department of Economics (20012004), Associate Dean of CEM (2007-2012), and Dean of the Graduate School (2012-2015); for his earnest work and effort in advancing economics education, internationalization of higher education, and building UPLB’s culture of research and extension; and for his guidance and leadership in affiliated professional organizations. GIL C. SAGUIGUIT JR. Agriculture and Rural Development For bringing honor and prestige to his alma mater, the College of Economics and Management, University of the Philippines Los Baños through his outstanding achievements in the fields of project and financial management and implementation, fund generation, rural development and extension, participatory community-based and multidisciplinary research; being well-recognized not only by national award-giving bodies but by the international community as well, for his noteworthy contributions to agricultural education and human resource development. JIMMY B. WILLIAMS Finance and Agribusiness Entrepreneurship For his outstanding contribution and unwavering commitment towards the realization and fulfillment of the Department of Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship’s (DAME) vision and mission which extended beyond his mandatory retirement on May 18, 2012 serving as Adjunct Professor. For continuously inspiring students and faculties alike serving for 38 years as an excellent teacher and mentor, and elevating the level of understanding in the field of finance and agribusiness entrepreneurship. WILLIAM S. GRUEZO MOST OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS AWARD (MANCONO) for his excellent achievements that earned him honors and awards as a well-respected, accomplished and rare breed Botanist in Asia; for having authored and coauthored books on biodiversity and taxonomy; for his publication of 54 taxa, which include subgenera and new species of lichen genus Lobaria, 14 changes in taxonomic and nomenclatural status in Malesian flowering plants and several new species of mites; for his 62 scientific articles published in various national and international refereed journals most of which are ISI; and above all, for his exceptional contributions in the advancement of the frontiers of basic science knowledge that brought national conservation efforts of the country to new heights. JESSE L. VEGO OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD (Government Service) for his meritorious achievements as public servant; for his exemplary leadership in planning, implementation and supervision of various provincial forestry programs and projects that contributed significantly to the conservation of the environment and natural resources; for his initiatives in generating support from concerned government agencies that made possible the construction of green PENRO office buildings equipped with rain water harvesting in Negros Occidental and Guimaras Provinces; for his active role in anti-illegal logging and forest protection efforts; and for his exceptional contributions in increasing awareness of the public on climate change mitigation and adaptation. ROGEL C. CABAUATAN OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD (Private Sector) for his outstanding achievements as forester in charge of environmental management, protection and enhancement, community relations, security, as well as safety and health that have greatly contributed to the advancement of corporate social responsibility goal; for his numerous innovations and initiatives to make the mining industry more responsive to the needs of the people while ensuring environment sustainability; and for his unwavering dedication to national development by providing livelihood and environmental services to local government units. ALFREDO B. LORENZO OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD (International Service) for his outstanding achievements as educator and research program developer, leader and implementor that earned him honors and awards; for his unrelenting efforts in contributing to the science and practice of arboriculture, forestry in rural and urban environment, landscape design and contracting as well as GIS applications through research and other scholarly works manifested in articles published in refereed journals of international readership; and for his impressive public service of various types making the University he represents at par with other universities in the region. MARLEA P. MUNEZ OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD (Community Service) for her remarkable achievements and exceptional involvement in the promotion and implementation of more adaptable community forestry; for her valuable contributions to the institutionalization of the CommunityBased Forest Management (CBFM) in 1995 and in the completion of the 2007 National CBFM strategic plan; for her substantial efforts in the enactment of the AntiTrafficking in Persons and Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Acts; for her significant participation in CoDeREDD Philippines that paved the way for the successful implementation of the Philippine National REDD-Plus Strategy; and for her generosity and strong advocacy in providing scholarships for the youth. CHRISTOPHER G. LOMBOY OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD (Community Service) for his outstanding achievements in social development work; for his unrelenting dedication to poverty alleviation by facilitating the provision of financial assistance through microfinancing not only in the Philippines but also in Asia and the Pacific; for his incessant endeavor in developing savingsbased intervention program that helped eliminate child labor; for his leadership, well-established credibility and integrity that encouraged international institutions to provide financial assistance to development organizations in some ASEAN countries including the Philippines; for sharing his knowledge and experiences on micro-financing, financial education and enterprise development that paved the way for the adoption of his schemes on Sustainable Livelihood Development program by several national and international agencies. GERARDO T. CABREROS OUTSTANDING INSTITUTIONAL SERVICE AWARD (Education Sector) for his significant achievements as educator and practitioner that earned him awards and recognitions; for his penchant for acquiring new knowledge and fields of specialization as evidenced by having several MS and PhD degrees that significantly helped him become more effective in his teaching profession; for incessantly distinguishing himself through scholarly work as manifested by his book, “Management, Entrepreneurship Policies and Strategies” and for his contribution to the advancement of the forestry profession by serving as member of the Board of Examiner for Foresters of the Professional Regulation Commission and as Chairman of the Technical Panel of the Commission of Higher Education. RAZAK BIN WAHAB OUTSTANDING INSTITUTIONAL SERVICE AWARD (Research Sector) for his outstanding achievements as research project developer, implementor and inventor that earned him numerous honors and awards; for his very productive research and inventions/technology development activities as manifested by 6 books, 64 refereed articles and 8 inventions most of which dealt with non-wood forest products (NWFP) specifically utilization technologies for bamboo and rattan; for sharing, without reservation, his expertise on NWFP processing and utilization technologies by serving as research consultant in Africa and other countries. ELENO O. PERALTA OUTSTANDING INSTITUTIONAL SERVICE AWARD (Policy Sector) for his noteworthy achievements as educator, policy formulator and law practitioner that earned him various accolades from institutions, communities, students, and peers; for his exceptional leadership in rallying the Forest Development Center to significantly achieve its policy development mandate; for his unswerving service to the university, constituents and students as legal consultant, counselor and adviser on various matters, and as administrative adjudicator; and for his invaluable participation in the formulation of the Environmental Code of some cities in Batangas and Laguna Provinces. WILLIE P. ABASOLO OUTSTANDING INSTITUTIONAL SERVICE AWARD (Research Sector) for his outstanding achievements as research project formulator and implementor that earned him prestigious honors and awards most significantly the Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS) Award given by the National Academy of Science and Technology in 2007 and Scientist 1 accorded by the University of the Philippines; for incessantly distinguishing himself through scholarly works as manifested by his 18 scientific articles published in refereed journals most of which are ISI and chapter in a book; for his unrelenting efforts to contribute to national development through education, research and development. JENNIFER MARIE S. AMPARO Upholding Environmental Integrity For being an excellent and well-admired faculty member of the Department of Social Development Services, College of Human Ecology. Recently, she was awarded the very competitive Australia Awards Scholarship by the Australian Aid for International Development (AUSAID) to pursue PhD in Human Ecology at the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia starting January 2014. Ms. Amparo also served in an international NGO as program manager and later as the Country coordinator of the Blacksmith Institute – Philippines. She is currently an Assistant Professor of the DSDS-CHE, UPLB. She has taught courses particularly undergraduate courses, human ecology, project management, organizational management, community needs assessment and social policies. She was also recently awarded as the most outstanding member of the Sigma Alpha Sorority. CHRISTINA PRINCESS R. CAMPOS Children's Literacy and Development Christina Campos has always been a woman whose passion lies in her desire to serve women and the young. Her professional life and volunteer work show the advocacy she has to uphold the rights of children, uphold women’s rights, the rights of indigenous people, and the promotion of sexual health. She tries to be available for events in the department and her college which would require her presence as a resource speaker on the kinds of work she has done. Time and again, she would visit, send materials or help in the procurement of materials which can be used in the courses the department teaches, especially in relation to the courses on human sexuality, child development and adolescent development. AGNES M. ESPINAS Government Service Ms. Agnes Espinas rose from the ranks in public service, starting as a municipal trade and industry officer in Legazpi City then as an Economic Development Specialist with the National Economic and Development Authority. Because of her exemplary dedication to work and zeal for governance, Ms. Espinas became the Regional Director of Region IV-A of the same office. Her expertise in land use and urban planning skills enabled her to assist in the improvement of the lives of the communities in Bicol and in Calabarzon. A former assitant professor at the Department of Community and Environmental Resource Planning, College of Human Ecology, UPLB, she has also served as a consultant in various institutions engaged in uplifting the lives of people in rural areas. Among such institutions include Philippine Human Development Network and the Simbag sa Pag-Asenso,Inc Social Action Center, Diocese of Legazpi,Albay ANNIE ORO-TY Community Service For her significant contributions in empowering communities in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur by making available microlending funds to market stall holders. ERICA BARAQUIO TABUAC Nutrition Education and Advocacy Ms. Tabuac is currently the Dean of the College of Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics at the Laguna State Polytechnic University - Los Baños Campus. In 2009, she actively initiated the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics program of the said university. Consequently, she exemplarily supervised the full implementation of the program from 2004 to the present. Under Ms. Tabuac’s leadership, LSPU has produced 18 Registered Nutritionist-Dietitians from 2009 to 2013, with a notable 83.3% passing rate among its first batch of examinees. She was awarded as one of the Distinguished Alumni for Education and Advocacy given by the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food during its 25th Anniversary celebration this year. ROMEO A. GOMEZ JR. Academe For his distinct and distinguished contributions in the field of environmental science education. Dr. Gomez is a professor at the Department of Biology, College of Arts and Sciences, Benguet State University (BSU), while also serving as the assistant director of BSU’s Open University. Dr. Gomez has provided leadership in implementing research programs that highlight landscape change as shown in his studies in the Ifugao Rice Terraces. Gonzalez Alumni Service Award For more than two decades, she is one of the formidable forces in promoting the ideals of alumni service, not only to the College of Agriculture, College of Human Ecology and College of Public Affairs, but most importantly to the whole U.P. Los Baños, and the UP System in general. Her service to the alumni affairs transcends the walls of the UPLB Alumni Center, as proven by her global reach among fellow alumni. DE LUMEN Biotechnology Research and Enterprise Development Dr. Ben O. de Lumen co-founded Filgen Biosciences, Inc. in 2000, a start-up biotech company given exclusive license by University of California Berkeley Office of Technology Licensing to commercialize lunasin technology; currently Board Chairman; has 106 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 36 patents on lunasin approved in several countries. Lunasin (from the Filipino word lunas for cure) was discovered in the laboratory of Prof. de Lumen at the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology, UC Berkeley. Lunasin is a novel anti-cancer peptide (small protein) composed of 43-amino acids. Lunasin is now found in a number of seeds such as wheat, barley, amaranth, black nightshade, pinto bean, corn and rye. GIL C. SAGUIGUIT, JR. GRUEZO Natural Resources Conservation For his excellent achievements that earned him honors and awards as a well-respected, accomplished and rare breed Botanist in Asia. For having authored and co-authored books on biodiversity and taxonomy; for his publication of 54 taxa, which include subgenera and new species of lichen genus Lobaria; 14 changes in taxonomic and nomenclatural status in Malesian flowering plants and several new species of mites; for his 62 scientific articles published in various national and international refereed journals most of which are ISI; and above all, for his exceptional contributions in the advancement of the frontiers of basic science knowledge that brought national conservation efforts of the country to new heights. HENRY C. BURGOS Film Making For his sensitive and humanistic application of development communication praxis in film making. As a young writer in the indpendent film industry, he ahs already managed to receive recognition from both local and international critics. In 2012 and 2013, respectively, he won the Metro Manila Film Festival’s Best Original Story Award and the Gawad Pasado’s Pinakapasadong Istorya for Thy Womb, which starred the country’s Superstar, Ms. Nora Aunor. The film, directed by Cannes’ Best Director Brillante Mendoza, also bagged other awards such as Best Film in various national and international award-giving bodies.
