That was the case for Mabel McKnuckles, age 75. Last year, Mabel had started experiencing health problems for Mabel McKnuckles the first time—ongoing dizziness, and some serious knee pain. “I thought I was doing OK until I started feeling unbalanced all the time, and my knees started paining me so badly that I needed a cortisone shot,” she recalls. “My doctor was always asking me how much exercise I got, and I had to admit I wasn’t doing much—but I knew I needed to do something.” When Mabel was invited to lunch at Mather’s—More Than a Café by a friend, she saw the fitness center and thought, “Why, this would be perfect!” So, in July 2014 she began visiting three days a week to work out. “I started on the treadmill and then switched to the elliptical machine,” she says. “I also take the strength training class. What I learned from Sharon [Smith, the possibilities coach at Mather’s] is that we need to strengthen ourselves. It’s a terrific feeling to know you’re holding your own.” Mabel reports that, “After a few weeks, I was feeling steadier. I also got stronger—now I feel a whole lot better.” The dizziness and knee pain disappeared, and now Mabel doesn’t let anything interfere with her workout schedule, because she feels so good afterwards. “It was a transformative insight into what exercise can do,” she says. “Healthwise, I just feel so much better.” Find out how you can get healthier too, no matter what your goal is! Y When Surge Sherman presented the Breakfast at Brennan’s program last September, Robbie mentioned her favorite memory of Brennan’s was the Baked Alaska. Well, Surge made Robbie her Baked Alaska cake, and she thoroughly enjoyed it! If you have a suggestion for a program, activity, or improvement to Mather’s, please mention it to the Café manager!
