OXI
Hypoxi is a new fat and celluliteblasting treatment created by
a team of Austrian doctors that
promises to ditch up tq· three
times more fat and cellulite than
exercise alone. Olivia Richardson
puts it to the test.

ypoxi reduces cellulite, and slims and tones
the stomach, thighs, hips and buttocks
through a combination of vacuum therapy
and gentle exercise. These areas generally get less fatzapping blood circulation, but Hypoxi directs your
blood right to these spots. The fatty acids from the
problem zones are then used as fuel during and shortly
after the session.
Studies show that this therapy delivers up to three
times greater centimetre loss than what is achieved
with exercise alone, plus it improves fat metabolism by
80 percent after six sessions.
And good news for the already taut and toned Hypoxi is great for that last little fat pocket and cellulite

HYPOXI COMES TO
AUSTRALIA
Sydney sisters Anthea and Ariana Hendry
established Hypoxi in Australia in 2005,
after Ariana discovered the product while
she was working in the UK. After gaining
20 kilos, she sought a healthy alternative
to losing weight and this was the most
effective system on the market. Ariana lost
18 kilos with Hypoxi, and has kept it off.
Hypoxi has only been in Australia for
a few years, but it wasn't long before it
caught the eyes ofthe Sydney social groups,
with actress Pia Miranda, model!author
Kathryn Eisman, and radio host Bianca Dye
regularly visiting the Surry Hills salon.
"A friend put me onto it when I needed
to lose weight fast for a TV audition and
I've been hooked ever since," says Bianca.
"I've lost weight, and people have been
noticing it for the last few weeks! The
great thing also is that I don't want to eat
crap food when I do Hypoxi - you feel
like you have to eat healthily... it's very
powerful on the mind."

THE OPTIONS
There are four Hypoxi machines to
choose from, based on which areal s
you'd like to target:
Vacunaut - targets stomach
and hips
This is what Robbie Williams uses for
his abs. You're hooked up to a stomach
wrap containing 122 integrated pressure
chambers that stimulates blood supply
to the fat tissue in the hips and stomach
area while you walk (no more than a
brisk walk) on a treadmill for 30 minutes.
Wear skin-tight bike pants, a fitted T-shirt
and runners.
5120 - hips, buttocks and
thighs
This is perfect for the regular exerciser
who can't shift those last stubborn kilos
or who suffers from severe cellulite or
fluid retention. It involves gently cycling
in an upright, sitting position for 30
minutes. Wear loose-fitting gym pants, a
T-shirt and runners.
L250 - hips, buttocks and
thighs
Same as the S120, but good for any fitness
level because you lie down.
HypoxiDermology - skin
The VacuMassage has 400 integrated
pressure chambers located around the
stomach, hip, buttocks and thigh regions.
It works like manual cupping, but there's
no direct skin contact, there's a greater
surface area of skin being treated (and up
to 100 times longer than traditional manual
cupping), and the alternating high and low
pressure chambers stimulate circulation,

MY"EXPERIENCE
I arrive at Rejuven8 Penrith Cosmetic
Clinic, NSW, for my first Hypoxi treatment
and am greeted by the lovely Jackie and
clinic owner Nita. They hand me a five
minute health questionnaire to answer so
they can devise the right machine settings
to get the best, personalised results for me.
Jackie then weighs me and measures
my hips, legs, thighs, butt, and calves while
I wear undies, my stripy knee-high socks
and a T-shirt. I have the choice of having
my 'before photos' taken and I say "yes", as
long as they don't show my head!
She then takes me to the Hypoxi
'skirts' - they look like giant witches hats
made from wetsuit material, hanging
upside-down on hangers. I put one on;
it sits about an inch under my boobs and
feels tight like a corset, then flares out
just under my hips like a mini hula-hoop
(exactly like that quirky skirt 'Amber' wore

to the party in Clueless). It's initially a little
hard to breathe but I get used to it. Jackie
puts a thermometer band just under my
bra and straps one to my right thigh - rising
temperature is the key to Hypoxi.
I'm taken to the L250 machine and feel
a little nervous - it looks space-agey and
a little claustrophobic. I lay down on my
towel, get positioned, then Jackie hooks
my skirt into the machine and fastens it in.
It looks like that circus trick where you're
lying in a box and are about to be 'cut off
waist-down.
I pedal softly while she programs my
personalised settings into the machine.
The pedalling gets harder and I'm told
to go faster to reach between 55 and 60
revolutions per minute. At first, I panic
and yelp, "I can't keep this speed up for 30
minutes!" Jackie chuckles and assures me
most people initially think that but I should
keep pedalling and in a minute or two I'll be
fine - and she's right.
She leaves me and says to shout out
if I have any concerns. Then the sucking
starts... It feels like a vacuum on low but it's
not uncomfortable. Each suction phase lasts
about 10 seconds and gradually squishes
my stomach flat, like one of those clothes
storage suction bags, which feels fantastic;
if only my stomach would stay like this!

A lot of Darth-Vader-style noises
come from the machine but it's just
normal. I finally relax, get my wild
imagination under contr91, and read a
book and some magazines for the next 30
minutes. Jackie checks on me every now
and then and susses out my temperature
on the screen monitor, which I can see
throughout the session too.
Very fit people"wm have to leave their
"no pain, no gain" mindset at home as you
just get slightly flushed and nowhere near
puffed. Going too fast ruins the results so
you have to keep it easy.
At the end ofthe session, the machine
beeps then opens, Jackie unhooks me
and I get out: My face is looking great;
as if I've downed litres of water, had a
facial, and been for a jog. My skin where
the skirt was also feels amazingly plush,
velvety and smooth.
The day after; my skin has returned
about 70 percent drier again, but I've
already lost about 2mm each on my
stomach and love handles, and my butt is
looking smoother and thinner already.
After the second session, my knees (of
all places), butt/thighs and stomach are so
smooth; plus my cellulite has decreased
by about 50 percent on my thighs and 30
percent on my butt! It looks as if it's been
airbrushed in Photoshop.
After the third session, my butt has
lifted more and is looking rather cute hubby even notices. My hips have shrunk
a little and I'm starting to feel lighter and
more svelte in the targeted areas.
It's going so well that I'm starting
to worry I'm going to have these new
Giselle Biindchen legs and my existing,
straight-down and bulgy tummy! I'll need
to use the tummy-targeting Vacunaut to
even it out.

I had some mozzie-bite-type sores
on my legs before I came to the clinic and
Hypoxi has actually sped up the healing
process by about 40 percent. It's probably
something to do with the increased blood
circulation in the area. So all is going well!
Until session five.
I get major PMS around session five.
My PMS = ~ravings, chocola,! and lots
of carbs, which I ashamedly succumb to.
So it's no surprise when my knees start
plumping up again, and I start to panic
that it's all been for nothing. Jackie assures
me that it's just because of fluid retention
and period-ne s and she's right. After my
monthlies go, I'm slimmer at the knees,
thighs and calves again. (Advice: try not
to pig out too much, as it will set you
back a little!)
I keep shrinking for the next seven
sessions and by the end of it, have lost
a total of 17.5cm from my knees, hips,
thighs, buttocks and legs. My butt has
totally lifted and is more pett, my thighs
are more svelte and my skin is smoother
with 70 percent less cellulite. Confession:
I didn't do the recommended exercise on
non-Hypoxi days because I wanted to find
out what Hypoxi can do alone. So add in
exercise, and you'll be laughing!
Hypoxi is an effective (and easy)
way of losing centimetres and cellulite.
Consider it as a natural and cheaper
version of liposuction. You do need to
keep up a healthy exercise and eating plan
after ,Your 12 sessions though, as you're
not immune from gaining new cellulite.

HYPOXI DOS AND DON'TS
Do:
Eti Bring a pair ofloose-fitting trousers,
runners and a gym towel each session

lots offresh fruits and vegetables
Eti Limit alcohol, sugar and fat intake

Eti Exercise on non-Hypoxi days
Eti Eat complex carbohydrates (e.g.

etc.) and combine them with
vegetables/ and or fruits low in sugar
before your Hypoxi session
Eat protein-rich foods after Hypoxi
workouts such as grilled, steamed or
boiled meat 9r fish with vegetables
rich in vitamins (e.g. carrots, spinach,
green leafy salad, broccoli, etc.).
Protein is the building block of the
body. It increases metabolism,
improves muscle and connective
tissue texture.
Don't:
