The BC SPCA Kelowna Branch A safe haven for animals in need SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS The BC SPCA Kelowna Branch A safe haven for animals in need Each year, the BC SPCA Kelowna Branch provides a safe haven for thousands of lost, injured, abused and unwanted animals as they wait for adoption into loving homes. Between January 1st and September 30, 2007, the Kelowna Branch … · · · · · · · Adopted 1,320 animals Spayed/neutered 783 animals (both SNIF & our own animals) Reunited 160 lost pets with their owners Provided emergency medical care to 35 sick or injured homeless animals Presented Humane Education Program to hundreds of children in 60 classrooms Staff attended 463 complaints Held summer camps with 28 children attending, providing them with the opportunity to learn more about the importance of the human-animal bond The BC SPCA Kelowna Branch continuously strives to improve its ability to serve the animals of our community. One key goal is to spay/neuter every animal prior to adoption, so as to actively be part of the solution of ending unwanted animals. As of September 30, 2007 the Kelowna Branch is spaying/neutering all adult cats and dogs, and all puppies while in its care. The spaying/neutering of kittens requires extra caution to ensure their well-being due to their low body weight. The staff are working with local veterinarians to meet the goal of becoming 100% spay/neuter compliant. BCSPCA SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS The BC SPCA Kelowna Branch The Animals The Kelowna Branch shelters approximately 3,000 animals every year. Another key goal is to provide the best care possible and the healthiest most peaceful environment possible for every animal in our care. Adult cats that have been spayed/neutered enjoy living communally in a room that provides them with access to a secure outdoor space. Communal living is very important to enhancing the welfare and socialization of cats. Young cats and cats that have not been spayed/neutered are housed in rooms with individual cages. Recognizing that such an environment is less than desirable for cats, the BC SPCA designed the “Hide and Perch Box”, which helps them feel more secure and reduces their stress levels. Dogs enjoy indoor/outdoor kennels, dogs runs that allow them to be with other dogs, and a large enclosed yard which provides space to run and play. Two new grassed dog runs enable the staff to house-train dogs, increasing their chances of a successful adoption. The Kelowna Branch has plans for renovations that will provide for improved quarters for birds and rodents. Maintaining and operating a shelter that provides a healthy, happy environment for animals is an expensive venture. As with any structure, the Kelowna Branch needs to plan for replacing and upgrading equipment, as well as regular maintenance of the building. Caring for the animals themselves generates expenses as well, such as vet fees and invoices for kitty litter. The average daily cost of caring for one cat is $12, and for one dog is $15. In order to meet the needs of the animals of our community, the staff and volunteers of the Kelowna Branch hold many fundraising events throughout the year. BCSPCA SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS The BC SPCA Kelowna Branch Branch Sponsorship Program The BC SPCA Kelowna Branch is introducing a new annual sponsorship program that will create additional revenue to assist with the operating costs of the shelter. Sponsorship opportunities are available to individuals, families and businesses. The program enables you to sponsor one of many animal spaces in the shelter for a whole year. You can choose whichever animal space you like, depending on whether you want to sponsor dogs or cats. The various animal spaces are available at different sponsorship levels, beginning as low as $1,000 and up to $20,000. If you want to sponsor an animal space with friends and/or family, there are opportunities for joint sponsorship. All of the money raised from the new Branch Sponsorship Program will go directly to the operating costs of the Kelowna shelter and the cost of caring for the thousands of animals it houses every year. BCSPCA SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS The BC SPCA Kelowna Branch Branch Sponsorship Program When you make the choice to sponsor one of the various animal spaces in the shelter, we will post a certificate in that particular area indicating your proud support. As well, we will provide you with a certificate for you to display at your business or office. The certificates will stay up in the shelter for one full year! In addition, we will give you a special mention in our branch newsletter, on our website (www.spca.bc.ca/kelowna), as well as at our Annual General Meeting. We will also recognize your sponsorship in our “Media Thank-You Program”, which provides mentions via several media outlets. Finally, we will invite you to sponsor another animal space in subsequent years with first right of refusal for your chosen area of sponsorship.
