Beginning in spring 2010, a series of events (concerts, conferences, projections, meetings, debates, etc.) are organized in
order to allow the Malagasy NGO to transmit its field work experience with goal of environmental preservation and social
economy in the south of the country.

It will also be the chance for Olivier Behra and his team, at the
root of this beautiful adventure, to launch a program of the
transmission of their expertise on the international level and
other local associations.
The first meeting will be the 24th of April 2010. It will be a projection/conference and concerts evening at the Alhambra hall,
at the heart of Paris.
Music will rhyme with ethic when artists with diverse influences
will gather together to make this an evening of biodiversity and life.

In honor of the international year of biodiversity, here’s an evening to the profit of
the Man and the Environment Association
( conference, film projection and concerts)
has incited them to exploit the resources of their forest in a reasonable manner, to generate new revenues at the same time
preserving their environment and their habitat.
In a few years, the populations of these “natural reservoirs”
villages have not only been able to come out of poverty by the
exploitation of the vegetal wealth of their region (via the essential oils production and ecotourism), but also undertook the regeneration of the forest (by replanting 100 000 trees annually),
the preservation of threatened species, and the awareness that
comes from education. Thus, the communal micro-enterprises
have been created, reinvesting the totality of their benefits in
the social structures and the collective properties, such as
health and education ( a school canteen, maternity, women’s
center…), the research of new medicinal plants for the production of the essential oils. With over 13 000 vegetal species listed,
Madagascar is one of the richest regions in the world.

Biodiversity and local development:
a Malagasy success
For sixteen years now the NGO Man and the Environment, supported among other by Maisons du Monde, has been working
with the local populations of Madagascar, threatened by the deforestation and poverty.
With a stress on the biodiversity valorization (agricultural support, programs to bring a comprehension of ecosystems…), it

Francofolies de la Rochelle, Solidays, or the Humanity Celebration (La Fete de L’Humanite) , will transport the public to atmospheres of Nu Soul ( Mem, Franco-American band a la Erika

It’s around these artists with diverse influences, on a poetic

Olivier Behra, committed to the biodiversity
Olivier Behra is recognized for being the precursor in the creation of links between the local communities and the private sector for the management of the environment.
In 1992, the Convention on the Biological Diversity confirms the
pertinence of this approach to the valorization of natural resources for the benefit of the local communities, and the desire
to come back to a balance between development and preservation of a healthy environment for humanity.
His experience on the field has allowed him at the end of the
eighties to propose links between the luxury industry and local
communities in Africa and in Madagascar.
Beginning in 1992, numerous institutions (FAO, PNUD, USAID,
UICN, CEPF, etc.) have turned to Olivier Behra to evaluate the
options of implementing these grand principals. In 1993, he
founds the association Biodiversity and Development based on
his concepts. At the same time, he writes a thesis on the “valorization of natural resources, options of the conservation of biodiversity”. Not wishing to limit himself to the theory, he decided
in 2001 to come back to the field and to rename his association

of overexploitation, non respected quotas, and ineffective repression to a dynamic system, positive for each sector and the
conservation of biodiversity.
His work has earned him to become the youngest project leader
in the United Nations and to achieve on the field the first “local
community-private sector” program that highlights the conservation of species.

A Malagasy success for the biodiversity
and the local development

and the auto financing of the villagers in this social structure.
Local micro-enterprises have also been created. Their reinvest
the whole of their benefits to the social structures, the collective property, health, education, and the research of new medicinal plants.
With more than 13 000 vegetal species listed, Madagascar is
one of the richest regions in the world. Man and the Environment supports mostly three sites in Madagascar: Vohimana,
Vohibola, and Tsianinkira.
Founded in 1993, the NGO Man and the Environment, supported
notable by the Maisons du Monde, is based in Madagascar. It is
specialized in the sustainable development and the preservation of biodiversity, by the involvement of the underprivileged
local populations.
It works for the Malagasy communities whose environment
is threatened by deforestation and poverty. Its directed help
consists in agricultural support, and programs of the comprehension of ecosystems, among other things. The NGO has incited them to exploit the resources of their forests in a reasonable
manner, and to generate new revenues all the while preserving
the biodiversity and their habitat.

Oils… essential, viable and equitable
Madagascar, a reservoir of medicinal plants
Thus, around 1000 children benefit from a nutritional and scholarly support, a health center offers close-by services of a doctor and midwives, this allows saving many lives, especially during child birth.
Isolated on their island till the end of the 90s, Malagasy people
have profusely used their local medicinal plants for treatment.
They managed to preserve their knowledge and their ancestral
craft of the plant properties. The active agents extracted from
these medicinal plants, and used by the Malagasy, have incredible therapeutic properties.
A program supports the amelioration and the diversification
of the food producing land (augmentation of the soil fertility
without the use either of chemical fertilizer or of pesticides),
opening a way a more balanced alimentation of the habitants,
based on the local, biological products.
That is the reason Man and the Environment decided to train and
equip the local populations for the fabrication of essential oils,
extracted from the aromatic plants. These oils are next sold to
world leading enterprises in the cosmetic sector, among other.

The commercialized products are certified as issued from biological agriculture, by European, American, and Japanese standards, but also meet the criteria of the equitable commerce and
the “Wildlife Friendly” label.
This activity is beneficent in more than one way. The revenue generated from these regular sales allows the financing of needed
social structures in the region. Moreover, the villagers are assured the perennial management of their local natural resources.
Finally, it allows a step by step development of economic and social
autonomy in these populations. This way the villagers are given the
possibility to undertake perennial management of their natural resources, and reinvest the benefits in educative and sanitary projects.

Local and international actors implied
in the association’s walk
They hold the harvest and production authorizations, delivered
by the MEFT. Their role is to standardize the production system
and to maintain their profitability. They develop an integrated
system for the management of: quality, Organic/Bio production, the fair trade and the biodiversity.
• Ministry of the Environment, Forest , and Tourism (MEFT) and
the focal point APA: Man and the Environment has contracts of
management for 25 years with the MEFT, in order to manage
the public domain high in conservational value.
• The local communities: the harvesting of the plants and the
production of essential oils are made by the local communities. They manage the book of the production charges: quality,
Organic/Bio production, the fair trade and the management of
biodiversity. Some associations and cooperatives are in the process of being created on each site. They offer training in order
to strengthen their skills.
These zones go from 3000 to 30 000 hectares and have a great
biodiversity. The main objective of the contract is to transfer the
capacity of natural resources’ management to the local communities. The regional and local administration of the MEFT
regularly controls the progress of the project and the commercial exploitation of the plants.
• Research partners: Man and the Environment collaborates
with several research institutions (CIRAD, FOFIFA, University of
Antananarivo, IRD, etc…) for the identification of products with
commercial potentials from the fallow land zones.
A regular communication is maintained with the national focal
point concerning the access to the biological resources and the
fair and equitable share of the advantages (APA), which results
from that exploitation.
• Private Malagasy enterprises: These are well established
enterprises which organize the production of the essential oils
with the local communities and make their promotion.

Beneficent Ecotourism
Man and the Environment has developed the ecotourism to encourage the conservation of the environment and the sustainable development
tent in the Alamazaotra reserve, as well as many species of
rare birds such as the secretary eagle, Soumagne owl, crest
ibis… We find five marked circuits, an interpretation of medicinal plants path, 20km of marked trails for hiking, a platform for
fauna observation, natural pools for swimming, and for picnics.
Madagascar is only visited by some 100 000 people per year,
people looking for wild destinations and that are interested in
the impressing natural and cultural wealth of the island. In spite
of its extreme poverty, this land remains a true Garden of Eden.
Millions of species of plants, birds, butterflies, and chameleons
can be found here, not to mention the famous lemurs.
Solidarity trip to Vohibola
The coastal forest of Vohibola is one of the last on all of the
east coast of Madagascar, yet one of the most well preserved.
It harbors an exceptional biodiversity (for instance, ornithological). Experiencing multiple growing anthropogenic pressures,
the management of the humid Vohibola zone was entrusted to
Man and the Environment, in order to assure its conservation
and valorization.

At Vohimana, ecotourism constitutes a source of revenue for
the villagers, by the creation of direct and indirect jobs; it has
already allowed for the recruitment and training of 4 local operational guides, porters, hotel hosts, cooks… Vohimana visitors
can not only see the results of the activities led by Man and the
Environment, but also bask in the beauty belonging to one of
the most exceptional biodiversity in Madagascar.

The visitors assist the different steps of the essential oils’ fabrication (the collect of leaves, their sorting out, and the distillation) by visiting the various places used like the tree-nursery or
the lab. They also participate in an exchange training and discover the traditional uses of plants by the local medicine men. All
during the trip by bus, on foot, or in a pirogue, the visitors never
cease to marvel at the splendors present at these two reserves,
managed by the association.
In Vohibola, visitors can observe unique species of snakes, batrachians, chameleons, lemurs, and a large number of birds. They
can also get involved in the protection of the forest by participating in the reforestation of species threatened of extinction.

of which the Indri but also the diadem sifaka, probably nonexis-

Several structures have been created by Man
and the Environment, through the earnings of
the micro enterprises and the public/private
partnerships. Here’s an example:
Education is the key player. But school, as it is presented today to children, does not favor this view. On the contrary, it appears off beat when related to the realities of the families who
struggle daily to survive.
Lise’s houses (Maisons de Lise)
They are devoted to the welcome the little children in order to
contribute to their awakening. The first house was built in December 2005 in a pilot manner, on the experimental reserve of
Vohimana situated at the heart of dense forests of average altitude, in the Malagasy east. It was devoted to welcome small children of the women implied in the sustainable harvest program
of the aromatic and medicinal plants. This allowed the kids to
be kept at a distance from a professional activity which was not
appropriate for their age, and to contribute to their intellectual
and physical awakening.
That is why the Education project has decided to direct its action towards the child, at the heart of the program. A child who
understands why he is learning and that he is capable to rapidly
transfer his apprenticeship in his everyday life becomes an actor
in sustainable development. If school links pedagogy, professional practices, and health, the child will naturally have a different
view on other ones as well ( culinary, hygiene…), but without
making the adults of the household feel guilty in any way. The
“we learned in school that…” will eventually question the parents as well. Children are the adults of tomorrow, and in the
long run, it is with them that sustainable development will take
its meaning. Therefore, school has a fundamental role to play.
Pre-scholar awakening doesn’t exist in Madagascar, or very
little of it. Thus, the children do not have the possibility to experiment with certain intellectual stimuli, which are key to be able
to rapidly learn in first grade.

The objectives of the Maisons de Lise are numerous:
implementation of vegetable gardens, on school land and the Maison de Lise territory.
Create monthly workshops for the children on a theme of environmental awareness: herbarium, plastic art on the theme of nature,
and agriculture.
• To contribute to the physical awakening of the child, through
food safety, by providing them with balanced and diversified
meals, as well as providing a medical checkup and hygiene for
the child. By putting in place free school canteens all the children at the nursery are assured a healthy meal that has been
adjusted by doctors in order to be rich in nutritional complements they need for development. Finally, each child gets medical checkups (vaccinations, if needed, and supply of the adapted medicine.)
• To raise the parents’ awareness to hygiene, nutrition, education
need, and the children’s awakening through workshops animated
by the midwives (on hygiene, food safety, children’s awakening,
and the workshops to raise parents’ awareness). Clothes donations for kids and materials most needed are also organized.
• Contribute to the child’s awakening through entertainment,
apprenticeship, and access to schooling.
• Raise the children’s’ awareness to the environment and the sustainable management of natural resources by involving them in the

Conservation, reforestation,
and carbon compensation
The association protects the tropical forest by
centering its actions on three main themes: the
conservation, the reforestation, and the compensation of carbon

program of carbon compensation. This allows particulars, collectivities, and enterprises to compensate their CO2 emissions
in the atmosphere by engaging with the NGO in its reforestation
actions. (This being said without underestimating the crucial
need to limit actual emissions.)
Tropical forests are in danger. They are the true lungs of the
planet and they play an essential role in the capture of carbon
rejected in the atmosphere, the biggest factor responsible for
global warming.
Through these three action programs, Man and the Environment employs today about 100 seasonal workers and 30 permanent workers during the year.
The tropical forest of Madagascar has lost 50% of its surface
these past 40 years. Two principal factors are responsible for
that: a forest overexploitation and most importantly an intensive
slash-and-burn agriculture. Deforestation threatens directly an
exceptional and a unique biodiversity: amphibians, batrachians,
chameleons, birds, lemurs, orchids, trees and medicinal plants.
Faced with such an alarming observation, the NGO Man and the
Environment has put in place, since several years, conservation
actions, as well as a restoration of the Malagasy forest layer, by
the reforestation of tree species, some of which are threatened
of immediate extinction.
Since its creation, around 250 hectares are replanted per year.

2010, the year of biodiversity, is also a maturity year for the work
accomplished by the association Man and the Environment in
Madagascar.
Olivier Behra and his team can from now on launch programs
on an international level, with the goal to transmit their expertise to local associations.
Maisons du Monde, patron of Man and the Environment since
its creation, reiterates its trust and supports the development
of these international projects, beginning 2010.

She sings in English, Spanish, and French. She has been distinguished a few years back on the M6 tv show “Pop Stars”,
through which she signed with Universal. Since, she’s been
doing concerts in France, England, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Ireland,
and Monaco. She is preparing a new album with an international team (Swedish, Australians, Mexicans, and Germans) that
will soon be in stores, next year 2011.
Something of Enzo Enzo, San Severino, and of Juliette or de

The artists present during the concert are used to both small
and big national stages. They have already been programmed
at New Morning, L’Olympia, Les Francofolies de la Rochelle,
Solidays, or the Humanity Celebration… they’re all committed
and impatient to be able to support Man and the Environment
during that night.
BRÜNNHILD is the solo project of the charismatic Brown, singer RUBY BROWN.
Take a touch of PJ Harvey, Gwen Stefani, Feist, a
bit of Blondie, Cardigans, The Kills, shake and you
get an idea of the Universe unique BRÜNNHILD.
Although heavily influenced by hip hop, punk and manga,
BRÜNNHILD takes us also into experimental areas usually frequented by Bjork and Emilie Simon.
This night is organized with the support of So Pink Management
and of Tempo 111 Production.
The stage is entirely decorated by Isabelle Rabin, a floral designer since 20 years. The passion that animates her, the richness
of her ability to transmit her craft in the particular context of
such an ephemeral décor, make her view this event in with
a new look… that she will present us with on this exceptional

Man and the Environment is a precursor of an action taken to
preserve the biodiversity in favor of the local development. With
that title, it has made the main object of different press subjects, radio, and TV.
- 1000 (40 × 60) posters distributed in the “point culture” network: 400 prints over 15 days
-5000 copies of the action plan and donation calls: folder distributed in Maison du Monde shops & partners
- 80 boards (200 × 150) in the Metrobus network and partner RATP networks, and ticketing (FNAC or Digitick negotiation

With 2010, the international year of biodiversity, the association’s actions are naturally found in the midst of today’s media.
