January 2016 Docket - Cedar Creek Yacht Club
January 2016 THE DOCKET 2015 Board of Directors: Terri Allen, Michael Bailey, Kevin Bay, Bill Easley, David Hall Wade Harley, Jim Jackson, Edie Oathout, and Nathan Thomas From the Helm by Bill Easley In writing my last article as Commodore, it’s a good time for me to reflect on the past year. My goals were to leave the club in a positive financial position, make property improvements, maintain a steady operation and work through the challenges in changing caterers. As I look back, I feel that I was able to accomplish these things with the help of the board, club staff and our outstanding membership. This job was made easy because so many care about the club and are willing to jump in anytime to help out. I am looking forward to 2016 and know that the support I have received will continue with our next Commodore, David Hall. I want to point out a few people who should be acknowledged for their efforts. First, I want to thank Mike Bailey for taking on the front entrance project; and also thanks to John Baugh for the attractive directional signs on the grounds. These projects were the “icing on the cake” on the vast improvements that have been made to the pool, club house and grounds in recent years. I also want to say, “Thank you!” to Jim Varallo, Terri Allen and the other tennis folks involved in the upgrade of the tennis courts. This was a much-needed project and contributes to the statement we want to make about our club when people drive onto the property. Change is a good thing but it is also hard sometimes. A change in caterer for our club restaurant is a significant one and presents challenges for both the caterer and the membership. Overall, I think Jan Strawn and her staff did a wonderful job with their first year. It was an adjustment for them and for us and I know they are working hard to make improvements and changes where needed. As a result of your valuable input, the board and house committee members have worked diligently with Jan to make some changes in the coming season and I ask that you continue to be patient as we start our new year. All the parties were great this past year and I want to especially thank Judy Grenley for heading them up for me this year. I know that pulling all this together and dealing with so many different personalities has to make this the toughest job at the club. We had a great group of party chairs and helpers and I want to thank them all for their hard work and dedication in giving us a wonderful season of enjoyable events. You all did a great job! I know it’s safe to say that we all appreciate the work that John McHenry does for the club, but you do not really know how much until you are at the helm. I want to thank John McHenry for being the glue that holds this club together. I’m fearful of the shape our club would be in without his guidance, knowledge of operations, budget constraints, and his wonderful staff. The improvements that have been made and our steady operations can only be attributed to him. Thank you again, John -- and I hope you never want to leave. As my parting note, I want to say it has been a privilege and honor to serve on the board and to be your Commodore. I have met some new people and have gotten a better understanding of other members that I have known for a while. This job has been fun and I have learned a lot myself. Many thanks to all the membership for your patience and understanding this past year, and now I am looking forward to spending time with friends and enjoying our club in 2016. I hope to see everyone at the Annual Meeting and Happy New Year to all! The Social Scene by Judy Grenley Happy New Year everyone! It is a lot of work to decorate the Clubhouse for Christmas – but WELL worth it! Juliet Stockstill had an amazing team of creative and diligent workers to get the job done, and boy did they! Many, many thanks to Juliet and to Terri Allen, Elaine Beadle, Lora Coleman, Mary Jane Hagar, Cathy Hardcastle, Mitzi Jackson, Elmie Ruck, Lorna Sullins, and Davia Williams – the place looked simply beautiful! Also, Juliet wanted me to make special mention of Cathy Hardcastle and Eunetta Kready who helped her with the centerpieces for the Christmas Brunch tables. Wonderful job, ladies. The Christmas Brunch, as always, was a special time here at Cedar Creek. Many thanks to Juliet Stockstill, ever the proficient planner who promised us snow – and came through on her promise, despite the 70+ degree weather! Also, thank you to Jan, Jill and all the Mack and Kate’s folks who gave us a delicious brunch; not to forget Terry and Holly Clyne for the visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, - and of course, Mr. Gwyn Lanius who put the whole place in the Christmas spirit with his music! It was a memorable day here at CCYC! I want to take a moment to thank all of our event teams this year for all their hard work and devotion they have shown to their club. It takes teamwork to pull these events off and the responsibility and work involved in good events cannot rest on the shoulders of just one person or even a small group of people. It takes a lot of folks and I am so grateful for you all, especially some of our newer members who have jumped in with both feet like Elaine Beadle, Leigh Ann Cochran, Shelly Cole, Patricia Hunt, Laurie Osbon, and Heather Sisemore! Your enthusiasm and volunteer spirit have been inspiring and were a great blessing to me in 2015. New members have continued to volunteer for next year and I’m looking forward to working with them and getting to know them better as well! They advised, measured, calculated, built, arranged, lifted, moved heavy objects, encouraged, kept the office running, and (debatably) kept me sane. I love them. Many thanks to you all! You made my year fantastic! We’ve got a lot of good things planned for you in 2016 – I hope you will make it a point to join in; it won’t be a party without you! If Romeo and Juliet had grown up and survived the angst of youth and family drama, they would’ve become just like Pat and Lisa Member Spotlight Whitworth. We find them romantic, kind, caring and just plain Starring fun and if you don’t know how, the Whitworths can teach you how to love everything about your life. Here’s a look at just how Pat & Lisa Whitworth wonderful they are: Pat is originally from Knoxville. He graduated from UT undergrad and medical school and during school and residencies he lived in Memphis, Louisville and Houston before moving to settle in Nashville in 1991 to start a surgical oncology practice. Lisa hails from Seattle, Washington, growing up in the Northwest including Seattle and Portland, Oregon. She lived in New York, Boston and San Francisco before moving to Nashville in 2006 when she and Pat got engaged and declares herself to be officially in love with living in the South. Pat and Lisa met through work. Lisa was building a medical device company focused on women’s health and Pat was a leading breast specialist who taught courses around the country on image-guided procedures, which were the foundation of the devices her company was developing. “We were lucky to capture his interest and enthusiasm to work with my company to develop a new minimally invasive treatment for breast tumors. His experience, creativity and patient-centered approach was critical to the success of the company … and very ATTRACTIVE, to boot!” The two became engaged at Cedar Creek on a romantic, snowy winter evening in December. Pat wanted to take Lisa to his favorite place so they could envision their lives together. She said, “Yes!” and the moment made CCYC a very special place to them forever. The two were married in February, 2008 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico where they also recently celebrated Lisa’s 50th birthday with family. Pat has two sons. Pat, III is 30 years old and a Radiologist-in-training at Wake Forest. He loves to ski, snowboard, and travel and was recently engaged to a beautiful, talented medical student named Elsia. They are busy planning a wedding in 2017. Sam is 22 and is a student at Nashville State. His hobbies include trap shooting, trucks and cars, fitness, skiing and cooking. Pat is a Surgical Oncologist and also works in medical education and research. He started the Nashville Breast Center in 2000 to sub-specialize in breast cancer care. Lisa works with early stage medical device companies on developing the business and product portfolio. She specializes in taking an idea through the development stage and to market through clinical research and physician/patient positioning. Phew! That’s a mouthful, but mostly they care about people and families who are suffering with this terrible disease and want to facilitate healing, help them to live longer and to have a quality of life while they are still with us. When they are not working, Pat and Lisa stay busy. Of course they love boating and travel – the outdoor life. A little known secret about Pat is that he is an actor – he minored in theater in school! He loves playing the guitar, snow and water skiing, backpacking and fitness and his very favorite … kissing his wife! Lisa loves to ski and cook, enjoys film, healthcare technology, entrepreneurship and the piano. She doesn’t mention kissing her husband, but we’re sure that’s pretty high on her list, too! The Whitworths have 2 wonderful dogs named Coco and Luna – sisters they rescued from the Baja on their one-year anniversary. They are a Mexican mix of Shepherd and Rottweiler. When asked how they have served at CCYC, the answer is simple – they come to the parties! “We have been active supporters of many wonderful events at CCYC and are committed to hosting a party this summer!” Coming to events here is a GREAT way to support your club and you heard it here first folks – party next summer on the Whitworths! Pat has been a member of Cedar Creek since 1997. He was jogging on the CCYC property while staying at the home of dear friends on Gay Winds when he saw a beautiful boat called Lady Wish in slip #55 on Northshore. Basically he trespassed his way into membership and we are glad he did – always be kind to joggers on the property! The Whitworths took over that slip and they are still loving it! Favorite memories? … So many … “the boys’ favorite summer memories are at the club and lake. Lots of laughs come to mind such as golf cart off-roading late at night at Green Turtle, riding out a crazy storm with the Tierneys, fond memories of Poker Runs. One of the most favorite is our boat naming ceremony last summer that we shared with many of our lake friends. It was truly a group effort and a complete surprise to Lisa – we named her ‘At Last,’ a song played at our wedding.” There are so many more … evenings spent with friends, Margarita machines in full force, learning new outdoor fun activities - this year it was paddle boarding and tennis. Breakfast mornings at the club; (ed. note – that’s my favorite time to visit with the Whitworths!) and having fun with the sweet kids on their dock. “My nieces and nephews would like to live at the club all summer. Because they travel from Seattle and Houston to spend time with us, we are so happy to have such a wonderful club with a beautiful new pool and fabulous friends to make their memories of Nashville special. Last year, my nephew mentioned wanting to fish, and up jumped the Hagars and Hunters to get them set up in the best fishing spot, complete with live bait! It was his favorite summer memory of the 2-week trip. Hands down, the Whitworth’s favorite thing about Cedar Creek Yacht Club is the people. “The members of CCYC are a family, and are truly there for each other. People at the club don’t stay strangers for long.” So you see, the Whitworths really are some kind of wonderful and we’re glad they are not strangers to us! Church Chat by Juliet Stockstill It is so wonderful to be part of a group of people who are so generous with their time and resources to help those in need. To me, that’s what Christmas and church are all about and the Church by the Lake was instrumental in seeing to it that 14 families (a total of 45 people) in need in Wilson County had a wonderful Christmas in 2015. I want to thank all of those who give financially to the church during the season and for the support of the church committee, not only for our Christmas project, but for all the giving projects we undertake throughout the year. I also want to thank all of our “Santa’s Helpers” this year who gave, shopped, wrapped and delivered the gifts for our families: Terri Allen, Deborah Baugh, Lora Coleman, Jere & Linda Ervin, Jim & Mary Jane Hagar, Rick & Barbara Halcomb, Patricia Hunt (who also supplied a wonderful pizza luncheon for us), Sandra Hunter, Sara Hunter, Mitzi Jackson, Linda Johnson, Bill and Linda Jones, Charlie & Carolyn Lind, Dick Stockstill, Suzanne Smothers, and Roy and Davia Williams. We had a great time serving others and it was a blessing to be a part of such a wonderful project and generous group. Thank you all and Happy New Year! 2016 Happy Hours by Judy Grenley Time to change things up! We will continue to have Happy Hours from April through September this year; however, we will not be asking members to sponsor a Happy Hour by paying for a big hot appetizer spread. If you would like to do that for a special occasion, you certainly may and all you will need to do is contact the office and we will schedule it and notify the caterer. We do feel it would be a better idea to have a snack basket (i.e., popcorn, pretzels, nuts, chips, etc.) at each table and on the bar from 5:30-7 every Friday night. If you would like to sponsor the snacks, you may do so for a minimum of $100. The price would increase depending upon how many refills you sponsor. A small tent card will be placed by each basket with an acknowledgment to our sponsor. Jan will be providing us a variety of 3 snack menus for you to choose from which will make sponsoring very easy and affordable. As has been our tradition, I will have a sign up sheet at the door at the Annual Meeting if you would like to secure a date to sponsor the snacks on a Friday night. The Crow’s Nest by Rusty Buckette Jason Bailey pulled out all the stops and popped the question to his sweetheart, Haley Hinton, right here at the Club! She of course said “yes,” so he whisked her away in Terry Clyne’s limo, took her to see the Christmas lights at Jellystone and then for dinner at Maggiano’s, the site of their first date. Parents Michael and Diane Bailey are delighted that their family continues to grow in such a beautiful way! Cierra Boyle appeared as a little butterfly in “A Bug’s Christmas” at Friendship Christian School last month. Proud Dad and Mom are Gregg & Nettie Boyle. Ugly wins out! Zach Cardwell, son of Craig and Kendra Cardwell won the Ugly Christmas Sweater contest for the sixth grade at his school in December! Good for you, Zach! At Last! Everybody’s favorite Mr. & Mrs. Claus, Terry Clyne and Holly Lancaster made it official aboard the Queen Mary 2 somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean on November 17, 2015. Congratulations you two, may your happiness be as wide and deep as the Atlantic itself! Congratulations and best wishes to Commodore Bill Easley and Simone Spencer who became engaged in October during the Nashville Yacht Club trip to Green Turtle Bay. Kyndle Fly, daughter of Keith and Ashley Fly, showed off her beautiful brains last month when she won first place in the Science Fair at school. Way to go, Kyndle – proud of those smarts! Shelby Halcomb, granddaughter of Rick and Barbara Halcomb, was a most graceful little lamb in the Nutcracker Suite performed by Smartt Steps at the Hendersonville High School. Way to trip the light fantastic! Congratulations to Miss Bailey Hunt, who has been accepted to Belmont University. We know the entire Hunt family is cheering you on! Well wishes are in order for the Bratcher family – daughter, Parker Avery Bratcher was dedicated at First Baptist Church in Nashville on December 13th. A proud moment for parents Blake and Christa and grandparents, Kenny and Cherie Parker. Zach and Sarabeth Pegg are STILL celebrating the birth of their second child, a daughter. Miss Daisye Elizabeth Pegg joined us on October 8th and weighed in at 7 lbs. 1 oz and 19 inches long. Big brother Silas and grandparents Bill & Sara Hunter are enjoying their new little bundle of joy as well. Congratulations, all! Manager’s Notes by Cmdr John McHenry Going into 2016 it seems to me that talking about safety is a good idea. Most of you are not here now nor will you be in the next few months, but we really can’t talk enough about safety anyway so here goes. Fire safety. It is always easier to prevent a fire than it is to put one out. Around a marina, the most pressing prevention relates to gasoline and electricity. First, prevention relates to clutter. If you have a container of gasoline at or in your boat and the container is not built in to the boat, ask yourself if you really need it and if the answer is no, get rid of it. The same goes for any other flammable liquid containers that you may have lying around. If you would like for me to, I will be glad to have a staff member collect flammable liquids for you and dispose of them properly. I don’t mean to sound patronizing, but we all become accustomed to items that are present, but really shouldn’t be, just through habit, so what I suggest is a fresh look around, that’s all. Secondly, electricity is a cause of fires on boats and everywhere else. As boats work in a seaway or just horse around in a slip, electrical connections become loose, create sparks, and before you know it….. Please look for warm electrical connections, a charred look or burnt look, etc. that could indicate a loose plug that could lead to problems. We have also discovered faulty battery chargers that over time, over heat batteries which eventually could lead to a fire. We found these problems by smell. There are some 50 fire extinguishers on the property here and they are inspected every year to make sure they are up to date and viable. Never hesitate to use one, but if you do, please be sure to let James and his staff know so it can be recharged. And, also, if you find the need to use a fire extinguisher, you absolutely should also be calling for help! Thirdly, did you know that there is such a thing Annual Membership Meeting as spontaneous combustion? The classic Navy example was the Saturday, January 23, 2016 pile of oily rags. Have you hired anyone to clean your engine 9:00 a.m. NorthShore Meeting compartment lately? Do you know what they did with the 10:00 a.m. Continental Breakfast cleaning residue? Might want to check. 11:00 a.m. Annual Membership Electrical safety. We have talked a lot about electrical safety in Meeting the past few years. And you have taken steps to improve the Board of Directors meeting following marina to the point where state inspectors have certified that immediately after in the buffet room Cedar Creek Yacht Club meets the requirements set out by G dock meeting following immediately NFPA codes and we are good for another four years. Now we after in the dining room enter the complacency phase. That’s the one where we get our brother in law’s cousin to do our wiring for us, or just use an old extension cord that we found in the garage, right? Sorry for the sarcasm. But we all have to remain on guard. New requireCommodore Bill Easley and the memments are in place for ground fault circuits and so on. If a slip bers of CCYC extend deepest requires electrical maintenance, it is imperative that licensed sympathies to the family & friends of: electricians do the work and use currently acceptable devices (no pun intended). If you have a question, please call me before Lori Provencher making changes, upgrades, additions, or repairs. (Ginger Turner’s Daughter) Finally, boats are bad about trip hazards, slick places, and other ways to cause a fall. Please take another look around before it CCYC sends best wishes for a speedy gets cold, and it will get cold some day, and remove whatever someone may trip over in the dark, like garden hoses or loose recovery to Renee Bliven, Diane Buckberg, Buddy Caldwell, mooring lines, and watch out for small sources of water that Henry Davis, Harold Mormay freeze. And don’t forget how things tend to blow around ris, Chuck Porter, Jim & out here. Mary Elizabeth Webster, For anyone who might actually have read this far, have a happy Jackie Wilson, and all new year! others suffering illness or Just a quick reminder that the club office and dry storage injury.
