Last week it was urgent to meet deadlines, move the building program along, write speeches and newsletters and attend to staffing the College for 2016. It was not urgent to travel in to the Powerhouse Museum to watch the Grand Final of the State-Wide Independent Schools Debating competition – but it was important. Wollondilly had battled through 9 rounds of competition against very prestigious and long-standing independent schools. As I watched them debate, I was immensely proud of them. They had stuck together since their first NSW State victory as a new team in Year 7 and had worked very hard and persisted through the disappointment of defeats in Year 8 and Year 9. They were magnificent, but so was the opposition. The same team that they had beaten in Year 7 had knocked them out in Year 8 and here they were again, also a great group of students from the Eastern suburbs of Sydney, who had also worked hard over the years. The result was less important than the effort. In the end, the judges commended both teams and then announced the HICES NSW Senior debating champions – Wollondilly Anglican College. There were four members of the debating team. None of them were born with a label. They tried a few things – had some disappointments – but found a talent in debating and stuck to the task. Across town, our College had two students who had also persisted with the endeavour to be the very best they could be in their chosen field – this time it was sport. Kye and Ray both worked hard and were selected for the NSW Independent Schools’ Rugby League team. After a tough schedule of games against NSW State and Catholic schools and also against teams from all other States, the Australian U18 Rugby League team of 17 players to play a series of tests against New Zealand was finalised. There were 17 players from across the nation named and, extraordinarily, two from the same College – Wollondilly Anglican College. Neither of those boys was born with a label. They tried a few things – had some disappointments – but found a talent in Rugby League and stuck to the task. A few years ago, these students sat where you are now. They wondered what they might be good at and they took advantage of opportunities. They had character – but they were also encouraged by those around them – parents / teachers / peers. It was a positive encouragement. There is no doubt that the core business of schools is education – helping students improve their learning. But celebration of success should never be confined to a narrow range of characteristics. Whilst not neglecting the basics, we bring a Christian perspective to education. We hold that every child is made in the image of God and has been given gifts and talents that can be developed to lead to success. Romans 12:5 Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same functions, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We urge all students to try – and to seek to be the very best that they can be. Sometimes they surprise themselves. Sometimes a NSW champion debater, an Australian Rugby League player, a world sporting champion, a High Distinction, a 90+ ATAR HSC, a lady, or a gentleman results. God does not make junk. FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK NOTE: Term 4 commences TUESDAY, 6 October – WEEK B on the Timetable HSC Examinations - Exam rules and procedures The HSC Examinations commence on Monday, 12 October and finish for Wollondilly students on Wednesday, 4 November. Year 12 students need to be aware of their examination timetable and allow plenty of time in their travel arrangements to be present for the commencement of each examination. The Board of Studies does not allow appeals for illness or misadventure based on misreading timetables or arriving late for examinations because a student slept in. It is also important to be aware of the examination rules for each exam and what materials are permitted to be taken in to the examination room. The main rules and requirements for HSC examinations are set out in the Rules and Procedures for Higher School Certificate Candidates booklet, issued to every student when they begin their HSC study, and every student – by signing their Confirmation of Entry form (PDF) – agrees to abide by these rules. Each year a relatively small number of HSC students are reported for breaching examination rules. Read more about exam rule breaches. Delivery of 2015 HSC results This year, HSC results will be delivered to students via email and text message from 6.00 am on Wednesday, 16 December 2015. Students will also be able to access their results at the same time via Students Online. Students need to log into Students Online > My Details and check that their email addresses and mobile telephone numbers are correct. They should use their personal email address, rather than school email address, if they are not going to have access to their College account in December. Students will be sent a Students Online Bulletin reminder before the end of term, which will also feature a personal message from BOSTES President, Tom Alegounarias. Year 12 students should look out for this. During the examination period, your Presiding Officer will give all students a “Student Details Form” to take home. This will show the email address and mobile phone BOSTES has for them, and explain how to update them if needed. Students who do not wish to receive their results by email or SMS can opt out via Students Online > My Details until 5.00 pm on Tuesday, 15 December. Further information can be found on Students Online > Results > Getting your results. For more information, contact: Students Online BOSTES Literacy and Numeracy tests for school leavers BOSTES Literacy and Numeracy tests for students planning to leave school before completing the HSC, remain open until Friday, 18 September (end of Term 3), then re-open on Tuesday, 6 October (beginning of Term 4). The tests are available between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm on school days, to enable schools to schedule them as close as possible to a student’s leaving date. Year 11 Subject Changes – Commencing HSC Study in Term 4. Year 11 Students will commence their HSC courses in Term 4. Some students may choose to drop a level in English or Mathematics, drop a course from 12 units to 10 units or pick up History Extension 1. For any of these changes, there is a strict process students need to work through. Any students who wish to make these changes must see me for a Subject Change Form. Mr Ian Croger Deputy Headmaster PASTORAL MATTERS Term 3 Mufti Day As part of SRC discussions earlier this year the group collectively decided to use the funds collected from this Term’s Mufti Day to support Samaritan’s Purse. The Term 3 Mufti Day will take place on Friday, 18 September. All students are required to bring in a gold coin to support the work of this organisation. Students are encouraged to be generous to aid the work of this important cause. Students in Years 5-12 can pay the money to their Roll Call teachers on Wednesday, 16, Thursday, 17 September or Friday, 18 September. Students in T-4 can pay the money to their Class teacher on the same days. Below is a brief outline of the work this organisation conducts: Samaritan’s Purse is a non-profit, Christian organisation providing emergency relief and development assistance to suffering people around the world. Samaritan’s Purse is meeting the physical needs of victims of war, famine, natural disaster, poverty and disease with the aim of demonstrating God’s love and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. The aid and assistance are given without regard to the race, creed, gender, religion, or ethnicity of the beneficiaries. Dress Standards for Mufti Day The normal College expectations apply to hair and jewellery. Students must wear enclosed shoes – no thongs or sandals. Singlet tops or tops showing exposed mid riffs are also excluded. Shirts cannot be of a sleeveless nature. Clothing worn should not have slogans with inappropriate language or messages. Shorts - leg length should be at least to mid – thigh. Students have been warned that if they don’t comply with these rules, they may be sent home or withdrawn from the day’s activities. Senior Girls’ Summer Uniform Socks Senior Girls’ Summer Uniform Socks are available in the College uniform shop for purchase. The socks are a compulsory part of the Summer Uniform from the start of Term 4 2015 for girls in Year 11. Girls currently in Year 10 who are returning to the College in Year 11 2016 are encouraged to make sure they have purchased the socks ready for use in Term 1 2016. College Sports Socks The College sports socks are now a compulsory part of the uniform. With students back to wearing shorts for Sports Uniform in Term 4 it is essential that all students be wearing the College Sports Socks as part of their uniform on their respective sports days. Please ensure that these have been purchased and are worn to the College on sports days. Mr Liam Toland Director Pastoral Care (T-12) TRANSITION How amazingly quickly is this year going? Doesn’t it seem like only yesterday that your children started their first steps into the Transition room? Term 4 promises to be just as fun filled and exciting as the rest of the year has been, our big focus this term is the actual physical transition into the College environment. The biggest changes for the students will be recess and lunch breaks and sessions in Kindergarten. The first change will begin in Week 1 where the Transition students will be lining up with the K-2 students for morning assembly (rather than assembling in the Library). The teacher who was previously on duty in the Cook Library will be on duty with the children who arrive early in the K-2 Playground. Transition students will need to line up with their bag and hat when the bell rings. The children will be joining the K-2 play area for recess and lunch in Week 4 as part of their ‘Transition to Kindergarten Program’ and will continue this for the remainder of Term 4. The progression into this area is with the support of their regular recess and lunch duty teachers. Learning to play in a space with a number of children, as well as mixed ages, will prepare them well for next year’s playground challenges. Lunch Orders: Transition students may have lunch orders from Week 4 onwards. These are exciting changes for the children and I also expect for you, as now, the reality of Kindergarten is fast approaching! Some little things you can do to assist your children with the changes are: Always talk positively about changes and challenges. Encourage participation (particularly for the morning sails assembly) by being on time, standing back, and providing reassuring waves and smiles if needed from a distance. Stick to the routine so your children are not faced with changes and/or stresses each day. Encourage them to be responsible for their College belongings. Always remind them of how wonderful they are and how much you love them. Please remember to send your child with their green transition hat and water bottle each day. The weather is warming up and the College policy is ‘No hat, play in the shade’. We will also be having STEPS Vision Screening next term. Your child will bring home information and a consent form in their diaries for this. Please return the consent form as soon as possible, even if you do not wish to have screening performed. Mrs Rebecca Napier Primary Teacher END OF YEAR STUDENT WITHDRAWALS As the end of year approaches, please be reminded that all student withdrawals require one full term's notice in order to reclaim the bond and not be liable for Term 1 fees in 2016. This applies to all leavers including Transition, Year 10 and Year 11. All withdrawals need to be formally advised to the Headmaster in writing. Please contact me should you have any further queries. Remember "Monolingualism is curable. Learn a second language!". Mrs Carolyn Clark German Teacher HICES DEBATING NEWS Congratulations go to our Senior Secondary Debaters who were successful in their HICES Grand Final debate at the Power House Museum in Sydney on Thursday, 10 September. The topic for their final debate was: That during war time, historical artefacts should be preserved at all costs. We had the negative case against Emmanuel College. The Wollondilly team is now the Champion team in the 2015 Chapman Cup competition. The team, made up of Max Noakes, Jason Davies, Nicholas Fleming and Maddison Traynor have made their way through four rounds of preliminary debates and the finals knock out series to get to this Grand Final. In that time they have debated local schools including Chevalier College, Oxley and Broughton Anglican College and others further afield including The International Grammar School, Central Coast Grammar and The Hills Grammar School. The students have been outstanding in their preparation and research, along with their ability to plan a strategy and work together as a team. They have been supported along the way by a squad of other fine debaters all of whom are fine representatives of the College. Throughout the competition, the following students received particular acknowledgement on the Best Debater List in the regional rounds. Opens Division: Georgina SaintJohn-Viney and Briony Roelandts. Senior Division: Jason Davies, Max Noakes, Murray Jobbins, Lucy Mills and Jamie Bell. Middle Division: Ella SaintJohn-Viney and April Ainsworth. Junior Division: Jack Carroll In addition to this, Jason Davies and Max Noakes were named among the Best Debaters for the whole competition. Mrs Wendy Croger English/HSIE Coordinator CRYSTAL GROWING COMPETITION 2015 Earlier this year, keen students from Years 5 to 10 again undertook the difficult task of growing crystals made from alum (hydrated potassium aluminium sulfate). A number of these students entered their crystals in the NSW Crystal Growing Competition. In addition, Mikinley Millen (5), Sarah Jore (5), Julian Corney (7), Georgie Armstrong (7) (again) and Rachel Bova (7) (again) submitted crystals that were highly commended. It was wonderful that so many crystals were rated so highly. Dr Andrew Eaton Science Coordinator EARN AND LEARN STICKERS FINALLY FINISHED! The College collected a total of 29,400 stickers which is an amazing effort! There are thousands of items to choose from. From a Pastoral Care perspective, we hope to support those students who may feel anxious about the upcoming exams. We also hope to assist students who have difficulty organising their own time and disciplining themselves to focus. Romans 13:1 For some strange reason, as I woke up on Tuesday morning, this passage came to mind. It occurs to me that there is no such thing as a democratic autonomy. PRETEND HEADMASTER Pretend Headmaster Tane Pycroft (KC) brings out the guitar to sing the praises of all our Parents’ and Friends’ volunteers who worked so hard at making the WAC Country Fair such a success. PRAYER POINTS Thank God For the gifts and talents of our students and for the chance to celebrate That He does not make junk For the Parents and Friend Association and for those many hands that made the Country Fair such a success Ask God For patience and persistence in being the best that we can be For His continued blessing over our College For a safe trip and lots of language practice and experience of culture in Europe Psalm 127:1 Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain. Excellence, Endurance, Eternity.
