Sgt. Brenda Pauldo said they started serving warrants around 8 a.m. for people who had probation violations against them. The following were ar- rested: Lakeysha Stephens, Diane O'Neal-Mimbs, Kenneth Charles, Kenyatta Wilcher, Belinda Parks, Christopher J. Denson, Abigail Hall, Charleston Livingston, Benjamin Ervin, Christopher Stuckey, Joni Walker, Ashley Walker, Thomas Jones, Patrick Spivey, Mikal Edward Stuckey, Wayne Nathaniel Peacock and All about recovery... By PAYTON TOWNS III The cheering could be heard from outside the building as those attending the Making Magic in Middle Georgia Recovery Symposium supported those who were telling their stories. The symposium, which was held in the First Baptist Church Family Life Center Friday, gave people a chance to tell their success stories about overcoming their set backs with drugs or other issues. This was the first program through the Georgia Recovery initiative. "The stories are phenomenal," said Denise Forbes, CEO of Community Mental Health. "It's nice to get away from the office and come to a nice setting like we have here at First Baptist Church. We've had 245 people sign in. We have folks from all across the middle Georgia area and they are trying to find ways to connect, get information and resources to help our community in the need for recovery." Brent Hoskinson was first to talk about his success story. He told the audience that this area has a lot of good things going on. "If we want things to keep working in the community, we need to keep working for recovery," Hoskinson said. "We don't need people. We just need people to work and help with recovery. We have a huge resource here in Georgia." Hoskinson thanked the law enforcement officials in the room for their help. "It's important to have people like law enforcement to come to events like this," he said. "Thank you for being here." Hoskinson pointed out why people were at the symposium. - To develop local resources and leadership to recovery-focused initiatives. - To develop learning commu- Drawer B, Court Square Station, Dublin, Georgia 31040 • 272-5522 Sara Thigpen. Jarvoras Quintae Wells, who was arrested for possession of marijuana, giving false information and a state probation violation, and Christopher Wright, who was charged with probation violation and obstruction of an officer, were also arrested. Pauldo said others people were brought in and paid their arrears to Volume 101, No. 86, Pub. No 161860 probation and were released. Chief Wayne Cain said operations like this will happen again. "Unless people want their names on a list, they need to contact their probation officer," Cain said. "I'd like to commend Sgt. Brenda Pauldo and Lt. Ronnie Holmes and the Special Services Division officers for this oper- $1 ation, along with all of the other officers who assisted." Pauldo said the East Dublin Police Department also assisted in executing warrants in East Dublin. Cain also thanked the Laurens County Jail staff for taking on the additional workload the operation put on them and the 911 center for their help. "This is a passion for me," Hoskinson said. "Please help people. I hope you'll stayed connected with others and continue to be champions in your local community. … We've got to continue to work." Calvary Gregory took the stage with Tammy Spivey. Gregory read Spivey's success story. Spivey couldn't communicate with people and spent a lot of time by herself. Spivey's family had a lot of pets. Obtained Friday afternoon, the report goes on to say that three different students made allegations according to Twiggs County High School Resource Officer Earl Waller. "(Waller) was notified by Twiggs County High School principal that three female students had made allegations, sexual in nature, concerning a Twiggs County High School teacher," according to the report, originally filed March 23. "The incident was reported to DFACS, The Twiggs County Sheriff's Office and the GBI. "The teacher was placed on administrative suspension pending investigation. As of now, the case is still open and being investigated by the Twiggs County High School Campus police Department, Twiggs County Sheriff's Office and the GBI. Waller said "We take these kind of allegations very seriously, and we're going to thoroughly investigate. The Twiggs County BOE has been cooperating fully and giving us everything we've asked for." Neither the name of the teacher, nor those of the students were included. This information comes four days after the Twiggs County BOE accepted the resignation of boys head basketball coach Fred Baker, and the GBI released a statement on the incident that they were lead investigators of the alleged crimes. Sword-wielding man shot after attacking deputy NAVARRE, Fla. (AP) — A samurai sword-wielding man was fatally shot by police Thursday after threatening family members with knives and attacking a sheriff's deputy with the sword, authorities said. According to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office, the mother of Gordon Talmage Kimbrell Jr. called 911 Thursday night to report that her 22-year-old son was acting violently after drinking a halfbottle of rum. Relatives said he threw knives at them in the Navarre, Florida, home about 22 miles east of Pensacola. When another person tried to calm Kimbrell, he came toward the person with knives, forcing that person retreat into a bedroom, the report says. Kimbrell stabbed the door and then went outside with the sword. When deputies arrived, they found Kimbrell in the street waving the sword. They told him to drop the sword several times and tried to subdue him with a non-lethal gun that fires bean bags at high speed, but Kimbrell hit Deputy Matt Ray with the sword several times, Deputy Richard Aloy said in a news release. To protect Ray, Sgt. Brian Miller then shot Kimbrell, killing him, Aloy said. Ray was listed in good condition Friday. King was placed on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the case. Former Florida coach, AD Ray Graves dies at 96 GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Former Florida coach and athletic director Ray Graves, who helped the Gators reach national prominence in the 1960s, died Friday at 96. The school said Graves died in the Tampa area. Former Florida coach and current South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, who won the 1966 Heisman Trophy when Graves coached the team, called him a "tremendous influence." "After my mother and dad, Coach Graves had the biggest influence on my life," Spurrier said. 'I am so thankful for him." Spurrier spoke to Graves on Thursday and "had a chance to tell him I love him, and I sincerely thank him for the influence he had on me." Florida went 70-31-4 in 10 seasons under Graves, including a 9-1-1 mark in 1969. Graves spent the next 20 years as the school's athletic director, helping usher in the Title IX era and creating plans to build the O'Connell Center. "You can't put into words what he has meant to the Gator Nation and the countless lives he has touched from his players, coaches, friends and family," Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said. "Like many others, I was fortunate to have a personal relationship with him and will be forever grateful for our time together." Graves played football at Tennessee, where he was team captain in 1941. After a brief stint with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles, Graves embarked on a coaching career in 1944 at his alma mater. 00 2,075 00 $ $ 103 Terrace Dr. Dublin, GA 272-3579 He later spent 13 seasons at Georgia Tech, working under coach Bobby Dodd before Florida hired him as 14th football coach in school history in January 1960. Graves instantly made an impact, leading the Gators to a 9-2 record in his first season and a Gator Bowl victory over Baylor. In one of the most memorable wins of his career, Graves defeated Dodd and Georgia Tech 18-17 in only his third game as Florida's coach. Graves was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1990. After stepping down as Florida's athletic director in January 1979, Graves served as a consultant for Steinbrenner Enterprises in Tampa and for the Jacksonville Bulls of the United States Football League. He retired in 1989 and lived in the Tampa Bay area. Graves is survived by his wife Opal Richardson and three daughters. LOOK WHO’S TURNING 70! "They love (her) and she loves them," Gregory said. "(Spivey) is more sociable now." Spivey isn't as depressed as she once was. "(Spivey) calls her story a Cinderella story," Gregory said. "No there is no prince or glass slipper. But it's still a Cinderella story (to her). (Spivey) has self respect and dignity. (She's) not afraid to be around people." Mat Rainey began his story by telling everyone his mother died when he was five. "I took that really hard," Rainey said. Rainey was raised by his grandparents. He said they didn't know how to deal with the loss of his mother, their daughter. He was taken to a doctor and prescribed ritalin. When Rainey was 17, his grandfather died. "He was my hero," Rainey said. "I wasn't sleeping well and couldn't focus in school." Eventually Rainey was hospitalized. He quit school. Later he went to Community Mental Health in Dublin. He found a program for people like himself. "I didn't feel like I had a mental illness," Rainey said. He got help, and eventually decided to get his GED. He then wanted to give back. He started working as a Peer Specialist and now he works with the Community Support team. "I think of where I came from and the people we were able to help," Rainey said. "It's really awesome to give back. It's been very rewarding." Penny Ranger had a picture of her newspaper mug shot on the screen while she talked. "You would think that would make me stop (drinking) after that," she said. "I was raised to believe if you drank beer you would not be an alcoholic." Ranger began drinking when she was 15, just to fit in. Fifteen years later she got treatment and was sober for 10 years. "I started drinking again when my children left home," she said. ‘For three years I drank. I almost died." Her boyfriend, now husband, made her get help. This would lead to seven sober years before she went to a psychologist and began taking pills. She would soon take the pills and drink. After going for treatment, she planned to commit suicide. Instead, she went to another organization for help. Ranger wound up leaving that and went to jail. "Honestly, I had given up," she said. "I didn't think it was going get any better." She wound up at Abundant Superior Pools 278-6968 Liner Replacements & Weekly Maintenance Life and stayed there for six months. "I've never used again," Ranger said. "I now get to help people with substance abuse problems. I get to see these people come in broken and help them." Lisa Clark didn't believe her story was unique. Her entire life had put her around drugs and alcohol. Until she was 35, her life was filled with abuse. "I was always told I was useless," Clark said. "I woke up and thought it had to be better. … There comes a time when you get tired of the police knocking on our door or DFCS telling you what to do." She recalled going into Community Mental Health. "They have been with me every step of the way," Clark said. She stayed at Abundant Life for a long time. Most of that was because she knew she would die if she got out. "I use my story to help somebody else," Clark said. "The same program that saved my life is still working." Currently, Clark is the next home owner for Dublin-Laurens County Habitat House No. 35. "If you are here and not getting high, you are a miracle," Clark said. Elizabeth Button’s father was in the military. When she was nine, she got picked on by a bigger girl in her neighborhood. "I thought since I can't hurt her, I'd just hurt myself," Button said. "At 13 I thought my life was over and tried to kill myself." After getting help from a hospital, Button got addicted to drugs. After getting her GED, and getting married, Button went to Community Mental Health. She would find out about a position in the Peer Support Program. "I got so much help by helping others who were recovering too," she said. Mary Beth Soto, who is a recovering methamphetamine addict, said she's been clean since 2004. "I thought everybody else had a problem," Soto said. "I knew I was going to prison because I had a problem." The addiction took her son, husband and family. "I was going to jail all the time," Soto said. Once in jail, a woman told her about Promise of Hope. "What I learned was that I had a disease," Soto said. "I thought I was a bad person … and I was going to burn in Hell. I started learning about the disease. I wanted to get better. … By the grace of God I have been clean for more than 10 years. It's a big deal to me. I have a son and something to live for." She now works at Promise of Hope. "God has really blessed me for more than I deserve," Soto said. Peri Kyriacos was the final success story. She said a friend had been praying for her before Kyriacos began a 12-step program in Statesboro. "I got recovery and I wanted other people to have it too," Kyriacos said. "I learned about this whole recovery thing but I didn't want others to know that I was a recoverer." Eventually, Kyriacos learned to be proud of her recovery. "My daughter said she was proud of me," Kyriacos said. "What I've learned is you need to be an advocate." Sherry Jenkins-Tucker, executive director of the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network, was the keynote speaker of the event. "I'm the evidence that recovery works," Jenkins-Tucker said. "It's important to share with you. I'm a giant science experiment in recovery." She used to live in the back of an Oldsmobile. "I didn't have any future," Jenkins-Tucker said. "It was a desperate situation and desperate times. Life has been kind to me since being introduced to recovery." Jenkins-Tucker admitted that things have changed with recovery. It used to be people were given pills. "We have moved to a brave new world," she said. "I have a recovery path. Some days I'm running on the recovery path or sitting on the side of the path. Sometimes I'm face down on the recovery path. … There is a lot of hard work with recovery. "Magic is what we all make," Jenkins-Tucker added. "We share this work together." After lunch, Mike Fuller, the Magician, took the stage for entertainment. Fuller, who is also a meteorologist, amazed the crowd with the magic he performed, ending in a magic trick that showcased Basil the Baffling Bunny. "I hope it was light and fun," Fuller said. "I was proud I was asked to be the entertainment. Their stories are magic. I hope they had fun and I took their minds off their troubles for a little while." The competition included program areas such as: Architecture, Construction, Communication, Transportation, Culinary Arts, Personal Care Services and Public Safety. Each of the contests were framed around industry standards and were designed and judged by business partners, according to Georgia Department of Education spokesman Matt Cardoza. SkillsUSA is a national, nonprofit organization that empowers students to become world-class workers, leaders, and responsible citizens. SkillsUSA Georgia is the Career and Technical Student Organization for students enrolled in Architecture, Construction, Communication and Transportation (ACCT), Cosmetology, and Public Safety Pathways in Georgia’s secondary schools. “Through SkillsUSA, students learn skills that prepare them for the future and help them discover careers they love,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “As we work to personalize education for all students, opportunities for hands-on career exploration could not be more important. I congratulate these student winners and commend every student who participated.” Tyler Lowe claimed first place for his Health Occupations Professional Portfolio, while the team of Meredith Cutler, Daphine Ford and Alexis Lawson earned first place honors in the School Project contest. "We are extremely proud of our students and their showing at state competition," said Dean Cutler, SkillsUSA coordinator and Construction Technology Instructor. "Moreover, though, we are proud of the dedication and time that the students spent preparing for both region and state competition. They represented the school and the local chapter with dignity and pride. "The 2015 theme for SkillsUSA is '50 Years of Champions at Work.' Truly, our students are champions. Their dedication and work ethic contribute to supporting this theme." Cutler added that SkillsUSA is one of many programs in place at East Laurens designed to prepare students for the "real world." "At ELHS, we work diligently to prepare students for the 'real world' after high school," Cutler said. "All of the SkillsUSA competitions do just that...allow the students to hone the skills they learn at school in a realworld application. Whether it is prepared speech, laying brick, electrical wiring, or designing a career pathway health science project, the students are preparing to become work-ready. Now that Dublin can boast of two papers, the COURIER HERALD and the DUBLIN LEDGER, the citizens should wake up and take a civic interest and pride in the fact and realize that the papers are always ready to back all worthwhile projects for the development of Dublin. They teach thrift and help promote all important topics of the day that contribute to its prosperity and growth; they give the public amusement and improving topics to think about and guide the public in the matter of finding right places for the right article of merchandise. Newspapers are the backbone of a city because first, last and always, they boost the home city using straightforward, practical methods. They are the great market place where business houses offer their service and merchandise, and, of course, all of the important topics of the day are presented to the public through them. TINY TOTS RIDE 20 MILES TO GET DIPHTHERIA SHOT Dr. O.H. Cheek, Laurens County Health Officer, was kept busy today administering the second dose of diphtheria serum to Laurens County children. A fine per cent of those taking the first shot last week were on hand today for their second dose, he said. Also, a truck load of children was noticed in the street. The mother of one of the little fellows in the truck said that there were 15 children who had come in the truck from below Cadwell - about 20 miles from Dublin. WILMER PETERS TO SPEAK IN ATLANTA Wilmer Peters, Dublin High School student, is the representative of the Twelfth District in the State Oratorical Contest and will speak in Atlanta on Saturday afternoon in the chamber of the House of Representatives before the state judges, who are John M. Slaton, former Governor of Georgia; Dr. Harvey M. Cox, President of Emory University; and Mell Wilkerson, President of the Presidents Club of Atlanta. Wilmer is an unusually talented speaker, and with the splendid training he has had it is predicted that he will be the successful contestant. His subject is "The Citizen: His Privileges and Duties." After the several speakers have delivered their orations, each one will be given a subject on which he will immediately deliver a four-minute extemporaneous speech. Dublin School Superintendent Knox Walker and Miss Edna West, Director of Dramatics at the high school, will accompany him to Atlanta. MRS. PARKER DIES AT HER HOME ON JEFFERSON STREET The death of Mrs. Charlie Parker, while not entirely unexpected, comes as a shock to her host of friends and relatives here and in various states. She had been ill for about a year, but was not considered seriously ill until about two weeks ago when she began losing ground in her fight against ill health. She died yesterday at her home on Jefferson Street. She was 49 years of age and a member of Bethsaida Baptist Church, where she was known and greatly loved by all of her fellow members. She led an upright, honorable life, endearing herself in the hearts of all who knew her. Surviving her are her husband, Mr. C.F. Parker, and ten children: Albert, John, Wilbur, and Harry, all of Dublin; H. F. of Coscicana, Texas; Mrs. Ira Horton, Mrs. Clarence Devereaux, Miss Iris Parker, and Miss Avis Parker, all of Dublin; and Miss Lucille Parker of Long Island, New York. Funeral announcements will be announced later. Adams POLICE CHIEF DECLINES TO GIVE SUICIDE NEWS Persistent rumors that a prominent banker of Statesboro had attempted to commit suicide induced the COURIER - HERALD to have the report confirmed by the police of that city, but without success. In response to a telegram sent to the Chief of Police S.A. Prosser, the following telegram was received today, "Details of suicide attempt and banking trouble request cannot be furnished. Banking situation good." PINE HILL NEWS Last week was a beautiful week for the farmers here to plant their crops. Messrs. He is modest, and the information in this article required a great deal of questioning before he let it out, and the writer never did find out where he lives. That is not so important, but but the way he raises O-Too-Tan hay and oats is. He has just sold six tons of OToo-Tan hay at $25 per ton. He had an average yield of three tons to the acre. This is a lot of hay, but he could have sold more but had to turn down an order for two carloads. But hay is not all. The hay crop followed immediately after an oat crop which brought him $37.50 per acre, his yield being about 30 bushels to the acre. He says that he can raise fine hay without any fertilizer. Laurens County needs more farmers like this. ROSE THEATRE See RUDY VALLEE as he sings "A Little Kiss Each Morning" in THE VAGABOND LOVER. Half of the entire house was filled with young people, greatly over running the section reserved for them. Their section had been decorated in the Epworth League colors since the service was being sponsored by them as they furnished greeters and ushers. The sermon was based on the words of Mordecai to Esther, "Who knoweth but thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" The response to this challenge led to more than 50 young people crowding around the altar at the close of the message as an expression of their loyalty to Jesus Christ. After the benediction, several made application to the pastor for membership in the Church. Only two more nights remain of the revival campaign, evangelist Lovein leaving for his next meeting at Lebanon, Tenn., at the close of Friday night's service. Today's Highlight in History: On April 11, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln spoke to a crowd outside the White House, saying, "We meet this evening, not in sorrow, but in gladness of heart." (It was the last public address Lincoln would deliver.) On this date: In 1689, William III and Mary II were crowned as joint sovereigns of Britain. In 1713, the Treaty of Utrecht was signed, ending the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte abdicated as Emperor of the French and was banished to the island of Elba. (Napoleon later escaped from Elba and returned to power in March 1815, until his downfall in the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815.) In 1899, the treaty ending the Spanish-American War was declared in effect. In 1921, Iowa became the first state to impose a cigarette tax, at 2 cents a package. In 1945, during World War II, American soldiers liberated the notorious Nazi concentration camp Buchenwald in Germany. In 1951, President Harry S. Truman relieved Gen. Douglas MacArthur of his commands in the Far East. In 1955, the film drama "Marty," starring Ernest Borgnine, was released by United Artists. In 1965, dozens of tornadoes raked six Midwestern states on Palm Sunday, killing 271 people. ALMANAC In 1970, Apollo 13, with astronauts James A. Lovell, Fred W. Haise and Jack Swigert, blasted off on its ill-fated mission to the moon. In 1979, Idi Amin was deposed as president of Uganda as rebels and exiles backed by Tanzanian (tan-zuh-NEE'-uhn) forces seized control. In 1989, Mexican officials began unearthing the remains of victims of a drug-trafficking cult near Matamoros; one of the dead was University of Texas student Mark Kilroy, who had disappeared while on spring break. (Several cult members were later convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to 50 years in prison.) Ten years ago: During a meeting at his Texas ranch, President George W. Bush told Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon he could not allow further West Bank settlement growth and said Israeli and Palestinian doubts about each other were hampering peace prospects. Jeffrey Ake (ayk), a 47-year-old contract worker from LaPorte, Indiana, was abducted in Iraq. (His fate remains unknown.) Miss North Carolina Chelsea Cooley was crowned Miss USA at the pageant in Baltimore. Five years ago: Thousands of people stood in the streets of Poland's cities in a silent tribute to President Lech Kaczynski (lehk kah-CHIN'-skee) and the other 95 people killed in a plane crash the day before. After a five-month hiatus, golfer Tiger Woods tied for fourth at the Masters, as Phil Mickelson earned his third green jacket. Call 272-0375 Can’t wait for them to reopen Madison Street again. Never knew how much I used it until they blocked it. It sure is bad to spend all day in an office when it is so pretty outside. Unfortunately, it looks like it’s going to be raining next week. That is if the weather forecasters are correct. There is nothing wrong with warm weather. I rather sweat than be cold. Sometimes people need to take the time to smell the roses. Too many people are busy going all over the place instead of taking advantage of what God has blessed them with. To the person who said the teacher was right to have her opinion but not right with the place she did it, you are correct. I think the board has dealt with the DMS issue. It’s time to move on and leave all of the drama to Gordon and Alamo. Do they serve curly fries at The Masters? I think people are always looking for something to complain about. They need to stop all that hate and learn how to find love for their fellow man. It’s been a great week of Spring Break. Now, there’s only five or six weeks of school left. (AP) — Jordan Spieth stepped up for one last putt, nothing more than a tap-in really. Suddenly, he backed away. This one was important. It meant history. After taking his time, Spieth knocked in a short par putt on the 18th hole Friday to claim the 36-hole scoring record at the Masters, breaking a mark that has stood for nearly four decades. Raymond Floyd reached the midway point of the 1976 Masters with a 131 on the way to an eight-stroke victory. Spieth did him one better, posting a 14-under 130 that has included 15 birdies and only one bogey through the first two days. "That's really cool," said Spieth, who shot a 6under 66 on the heels of an opening 64. "It's cool anytime when you set a record, but to do it here is pretty awesome." The 21-year-old Texan was blowing away everyone in the field except Charley Hoffman, and even he faced a rather daunting five-shot deficit after shooting 68. Normally, Hoffman's 135 at the midway point would be good enough for the lead. Not the way Spieth was playing. "I feel really good this week," the leader said. "I'm not very nervous." Spieth gave a glimpse of his enormous potential a year ago at Augusta, leading on the final day with a chance to become the youngest champion in Masters history. He faded down the stretch, settling for the runner-up spot behind Bubba Watson but leaving no doubt that golf had a budding new star. Spieth arrived this year on top of his game, having won, finished second, and lost in a playoff in his last three events before the Masters. "Last year and the momentum from the last few weeks, I've been kind of on my game and feeling really good about coming to a place that I love, that everybody loves," Spieth said. Spieth had a 7-foot birdie try at the final hole for a 129. He misread the break and watched it slide past the left side of the cup on the slick Augusta greens. He initially went up to tap it in, standing awkwardly so he wouldn't step in the line of playing partner Henrik Stenson, who still had a short putt of his own. Then, Spieth backed away, marked his ball and waited for Stenson to finish before knocking his in for the record. Ernie Els, at 139, was the only other player with a single-digit deficit when Spieth finished his round. Everyone else was at least 10 shots behind. His brother Jacob placed second in the same events with times of 2:13, 4:53, and 10:38. (AP) — Southeastern Conference schools want to make sure they have more than just a couple of men's basketball programs capable of making long NCAA Tournament runs each season. And they're paying big money to try to do it. Over the past month, Mississippi State and Tennessee both hired coaches with Final Four experience. The Bulldogs selected Ben Howland and the Volunteers landed Rick Barnes. Alabama also made a run at a Final Four coach by pursuing Wichita State's Gregg Marshall before hiring Avery Johnson, who lacks college experience but has coached in the NBA Finals. All three are making at least $2 million per year, earning significantly more than their predecessors. "You have to be committed," Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart said after hiring Barnes. "You have to invest. That's what we've done here, and I think there will be a great return on this investment." These high-profile hires represent the SEC's latest attempt to upgrade its men's basketball depth. Kentucky and Florida have combined for three national championships and seven Final Four appearances over the last 10 seasons. The rest of the league has lagged far behind. Tennessee's run to a regional semifinal in 2014 marks the only time an SEC school other than Kentucky or Florida has gone as far as the Sweet 16 over the last five tournaments. Although the SEC earned five NCAA bids this year, only Kentucky lasted beyond the first weekend. The SEC's new coaches are eager to change that. "I wouldn't have taken this job if we couldn't make it to the Final Four," Johnson said. Johnson will earn about $2.8 million annually, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. He replaces Anthony Grant, who was making $1.9 million per year. Howland is getting $2.05 million per year, about double what his predecessor Rick Ray made. Barnes is receiving $2.25 million per year to replace Donnie Tyndall, who had been making Johnson $1.6 million. They're continuing a trend that began last year when Auburn gave Bruce Pearl a sixyear contract totaling $14.7 million after firing Tony Barbee, who had been making $1.5 million annually. Pearl had led Tennessee to six straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2006-11 before getting fired during an NCAA investigation. "When I was in the SEC (before), I didn't see 100 percent commitment from every institution in the league," Pearl said. "I do see it now. That's pretty strong." That's reflected in the star power of the new SEC coaches. Howland, Barnes, Johnson and Pearl all replaced coaches who were hired from outside the major conferences. "You had major schools hiring minor characters," said Paul Finebaum, a commentator for SEC Network. Not anymore. Howland reached three straight Final Fours with UCLA from 2006-08. Barnes took Texas to the Final Four in 2003 and has made the NCAA Tournament 19 of the last 20 seasons. Johnson coached the Dallas Mavericks to a Western Conference title in 2006. The increased salaries being offered to coaches also reflects the impact of the SEC Network that launched last year and will add millions to the athletic budgets of each conference member. Arrested Hawks player says he, teammate ‘in wrong place at wrong time’ ATLANTA (AP) — Pero Antic said Friday he and Atlanta Hawks teammate Thabo Sefolosha were not with Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland when Copeland was stabbed outside a Manhattan nightclub. Antic and Sefolosha were at the scene early Wednesday. They were charged with obstructing authorities and disorderly conduct and were released without bail. Antic, speaking for the first time about the scene at the arrest, said he and Sefolosha were not part of Copeland's group. "We don't have nothing to do with what happened with that," Antic said. "We weren't togeth- Antic sefoloshA er. We didn't even see the guy and whatever happened, happened way before." Copeland, Copeland's girlfriend and another woman were stabbed. A 22-year-old suspect was in custody. Antic, a 6-foot-11 backup center, said he and Sefolosha were not trying to shield police or onlookers from Copeland. "I would say that it's a pure example of being in the wrong place at the wrong time," Antic said. "I mean, people know Thabo for so many years in the league. He's probably one of the greatest guys. The reporters who are here know me. ... It's just a pure example of being in the wrong place at the wrong time." Attorney Alex Spiro, representing Antic and Sefolosha, said the two did not commit a crime and he expects the charges to be dismissed. Sefolosha sustained a fractured right lower leg and ligament damage. He will miss the rest of the regular season and postseason. Antic did not play in the Hawks' win at Brooklyn on Wednesday night but is expected to play against Charlotte on Friday night. The Hawks have clinched the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. "The only thing I can say is we feel bad for the bad publicity we brought to the Hawks organization, the Hawks family, not by our fault," Antic said. The loss of Sefolosha, a backup forward and strong perimeter defender, comes as the Hawks already are missing starting forward Paul Millsap with a sprained right shoulder. Coach Mike Budenholzer said Friday that Millsap will not play against Charlotte and also will miss Sunday's game at Washington. Budenholzer said he believes Millsap can return for the playoffs. "I think we feel good about the progress he's making and the timeline," Budenholzer said. Budenholzer said he's not concerned the arrests of Antic and Sefolosha will be a distraction. "What's helping most is the players we have in our locker room," Budenholzer said. "I think they're a really mature group. They have a high belief in each other and they have a high belief in what they're doing. There's a real genuine focus on what can we do as a team." Center Al Horford said players are supporting Sefolosha, but he said he hasn't talked with him about the incident. "I haven't really talked to him much about anything," Horford said. "I've kind of given him his space. It's something he needs to get treatment and when the time is right, I'll reach out to him." Antic said he apologized to his teammates. "Yeah, you know, they're supportive," Antic said. "We apologized to them that we couldn't even help them in the game in Brooklyn. They win. We congratulated them. We've just got the full support of the team. That's most important for us." The Courier Herald Saturday, April 11, 2015/Dublin, Ga/Page 2b Penske crowding the top of IndyCar and nasCaR FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — The top of the U.S. racing world is crowded with Roger Penske's drivers, whether in open-wheel or stock cars. When Juan Pablo Montoya took the checkered flag to win the IndyCar season opener, he was followed immediately across the line by his pole-sitting teammate, defending series champion Will Power. Only one car was between them and Team Penske's other two drivers, with Helio Castroneves finishing fourth and Simon Pagenaud fifth in his team debut at St. Petersburg, Florida. "When I look at the IndyCar side, we've got four very strong drivers. ... We keep finding little things and it just works together. It's the same on the NASCAR side," Power said. "That comes from the top. That's how Roger runs his businesses, and that's how the racing teams are run as well." On the same day in Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, Brad Keselowski fin- AP photo RetuRn to texas Logano (22) passes Jeff Gordon on last year’s final lap ished second just ahead of polesitter and teammate Joey Logano in the Sprint Cup race. So in two races over a span of hours more than 700 miles apart, Team Penske had two polesitters, one win and top-five finishes for all six of his drivers. "That's stuff that we've never done before," Logano said. "For Team Penske to be able to do that, that was a big deal. ... Hopefully we just continue that momentum throughout the season." Six races into the season for NASCAR's top-tier series, Logano is second in points and Keselowski fourth — and both have already won a race, pretty much ensuring them a spot in the season-ending championship Chase. After both series were off last weekend, the Sprint Cup drivers get back at Texas, where Logano her with a 3:01. Jade Johnson threw a personal best distance of 82 feet, 8 inches to place third in the discus and finished fourth in the two- mile run with a time of 16:51. Hannah Young placed third in the shot put with a distance of 27 feet, 8 1/2 inches and sixth in the discus with a measurement of 64 feet, 10 1/2 inches. Madison Williams placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 31.12 seconds and sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.20 seconds. She also placed fifth in the long jump with a measurement of 13 feet, 5 inches. Keselowski's average finish in that span is seventh, including third last fall. IndyCar is in New Orleans for its inaugural race there and second race this season. The openwheel series' last four debuts at new tracks were won by current Penske drivers. Power was three times the IndyCar season runner-up before winning the championship last year, when Castroneves was second for the fourth time in his career. They expect Team Penske to contend for another title in 2015. "I have a feeling the championship is going to come down between the four of us. It's a good problem to have," Power said, chuckling when asked about the collective IndyCar group. "It's quite funny when a Frenchman, an Aussie, Colombian, Brazilian — a lot of miscommunication, all the different accents. ... It's fun, they're all really good drivers, and Roger seems to only employ people with heaps and heaps of experience." This is the first time Penske has fielded four full-time cars in the IndyCar Series. On the Cup side, 2012 season champion Keselowski led the series last season with six wins, and Logano won five times. Logano opened this season winning the Daytona 500 and has finished top 10 in every race. Keselowski has five straight top 10s, including a win at California and the second-place finish at Martinsville. Like Power, Logano points to team owner Roger Penske as the motivation. "He wants to be the best at it, and that trickles down to the whole company. When your leader is like that, you want to be like that, and it forces you to be like that," Logano said. "That's the type of boss you want to have. As a race car driver, you want an owner that's willing to do whatever it takes to win.” LeRoy placed sixth in the long jump with a season-best distance of 12 feet, 10 inches. Abbie Howell finished sixth in the shot put with a season-best distance of 26 feet, 2 1/2 inches, and she ran the mile in 7:59 to place seventh. Caitlyn ran the 300-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 58.39 seconds to place sixth. Drake, Stephens, Williams and Harrison teamed up in the closely contested sprint relay and finished fourth with a time of 56.75 seconds. The second team of Abby Foster, Victoria Clayton, LeRoy and Taylor Rose Watson placed sixth in a time of 58.65. (Gallardo 0-1), 8:05 p.m. Kansas City (Guthrie 0-0) at L.A. Photo by Dahlia Allen Honor band a privilege for listeners Dublin-Laurens Arts Council marks 15 years of Dublin-Laurens Honor Band performance By JASON HALCOMBE For a decade and a half, the top student band performers from around the region have come together under one roof to present a oneof-a-kind performance. That experience continues April 24 at 7:30 p.m., when band members from middle high schools from five different counties perform at the Dublin-Laurens Honor Band at Theatre Dublin. "I love it because it gives the kids an opportunity to play within each other," said Michael Dukes, West Laurens Band Director and organizer. "Sports is very competitive, but the language of music speaks as a single community. I love how we can get all those kids together and rehearse for a day and a half and put on a concert for the community." Scheduled to perform at the concert are students from Bleckley County, Dublin, East Laurens, Treutlen County and West Laurens. The bands will be led by Beth Taylor (middle school) and Joe Brashier (high school). "Beth is actually a native of Treutlen County who has taught in the Laurens County system," said Dukes of Taylor, who currently serves as a professor at Shorter University. Brashier will lead the high school students. He is the Director of Bands at Valdosta State University. "It's free to the public," Dukes said. "The Dublin-Laurens Arts Council has sponsored this event and we are so appreciative of their support. It is so rewarding to see these kids be given a chance to express themselves outside of their traditional band settings." About Beth Taylor: Beth Taylor is an Associate Professor at Shorter University where she serves as Director of Bands. She is the director of the Symphonic Winds, The Marching Hawks, coordinator of the Shorter Winterguard, PercusTAYLOR sion Ensemble and the Hill-Top Jazz Band. She is also responsible for teaching instrumental conducting, methods courses and supervising instrumental student teachers. Prior to joining Shorter, Professor Taylor taught both middle and high school band in Georgia for twenty-four years. Bands under her direction received multiple superior ratings at the GMEA performance evaluations and regional music festivals. Mrs. Taylor received her Master of Music Education from Northeast Louisiana University and her Bachelor of Music from Georgia Southern. She currently holds professional membership with College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, Georgia Music Educators Association, Phi Beta Mu, and Women Band Directors International. About Joe Brashier: Joe H. Brashier has been Director of Bands at Valdosta State University since August, 1998. Prior to this he was Associate Director of Bands at Rutgers University from 1995-98. His experience includes Director of the Marching Band and conductor of the Symphonic Band at Appalachian State University from 1987-92, and Supervisor of Music in the Kansas City, Kansas School District. Dr. Brashier's previous experience includes thirteen years of public school teaching. BRASHIER Brashier is a native of Clinton, Mississippi. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi, studying conducting with Joe Barry Mullins and trombone with Raymond Young and Larry Weed. After earning Bachelor and Master degrees in Music Education, he taught at Red Level (AL) High School, Tate (FL) High School, and Greenwood (MS) High School. In 1987 Brashier earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from the University of Kansas. At Kansas he studied conducting with Zuohuang Chen and wind literature with Robert Foster. Dr. Brashier has served as a clinician or adjudicator throughout the U.S., Canada, Guam, Europe, and China, and is a noted authority on the Saito Conducting Method. He also has an extensive background in marching band and related areas. Besides outstanding bands, he directed winter guards for eleven years. Duo of rapper Wale, Seinfeld land at No.1 with album ATLANTA (AP) — Wale always wanted to feature Jerry Seinfeld in his music, but didn't know how to reach the superstar actor-comedian, who initially knew nothing about the rapper. But then the Grammynominated performer met Seinfeld's wife, a Wale fan and hip-hop enthusiast. "She's a big hip-hop fan and of my music," Wale said of Jessica Seinfeld, a cookbook author and philanthropist who Wale said has many friends in the hip-hop industry, including Jay Z. "She was the middle man on a lot of things because Jerry is super busy. He's not an easy person to reach. But she was able to put it all together." Sure, some would call Wale and Seinfeld an odd couple. But when they met, Wale said, they instantly clicked. The duo spent two years working together and Wale calls their chemistry "natural." Now, the rapper is eager for listeners to hear the finish product, "The Album About Nothing," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week and dethroned Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly." "I liked his outlook on certain things. He's super smart," Wale said of Seinfeld. "He's a wise person that I can learn a lot from and knows about the entertainment business." Seinfeld isn't rapping on the album. Instead, he is what Wale calls the album's "narrator," offering his in- sightful commentary on each track to bring clarity to the rapper's lyrics. "He laid the foundation of most of the songs, so in the concept of the album, he's the other voice," Wale said. The album also includes dialogue from the epic "Seinfeld" series, much like Wale's previous mixtapes, "Mixtape About Nothing" and "More About Nothing." Wale, whose hits include "Lotus Flower Bomb" and "Bad," also tackles serious topics on his fourth album: He opens up about his former girlfriend's miscarriage and his cousin's death. The performer, 31, said he fell into depression and turned to drugs following those hardships. "That was a tough period for me. It was a struggle for me after those incidents. Everything almost happened at once," Wale said. Wale said he was also unhappy with the direction of his career, believing he wasn't getting the same respect as his competitors like Lamar, Drake and J. Cole. He said reading negative comments on social media about his music and character disturbed him, though he didn't let it completely dominate his thoughts. "I know I'm in good company," he said. "Each of them has told me my work was incredible. ... It's frustrating sometimes when people let things outside my music dictate their feelings about me. But at the end of the day, the respect of my peers is all that matters." iTunes Top 10 MOVIES By The Associated Press iTunes Movies US Charts 1. Interstellar 2.The Imitation Game 3.Wild 4. The author's latest novel adapted for the big screen, "The Longest Ride," is no exception, offering two love stories at once. But the most heartfelt affair here isn't between its impossibly goodlooking stars; it's shared by a couple 70 years their senior through a story told in flashbacks. Sophia (Britt Robertson) and Luke (Scott Eastwood, son of Clint) comprise the younger pair. She's an arthistory student at North Carolina's Wake Forest University with plans to work in a New York gallery. He's a competitive bull rider trying to claim the national title. They meet when her friends persuade her to go to the rodeo. He's in the ring, and during a stunt, his cowboy hat flies off and lands right in her lap. Obviously, they have to go on a date. A convoluted and unrealistic set of circumstances lead them to meet Ira (Alan Alda), a widowed curmudgeon who clings to a collection of love letters he wrote to his late wife. It is through these letters that the young couple, and the audience, learns about Ira's love affair with Ruth. Told through extended, sepia-tinted flashbacks, the young Ira (Jack Huston) and Ruth (Oona Chaplin) share the kind of romance that movies are made for. It was love at first sight for In this image released by 20th Century Fox, Britt Robertson, right, and Scott Eastwood appear in a scene from "The Longest Ride." By the time he's called to serve, they're a couple, and Ruth waits for Ira until an injury sends him home for good. Despite years of personal challenges, they keep their marriage intact. The letters, and the flashback sequences they inspire, reveal "the longest ride" has nothing to do with bull-riding: It's about Ira and Ruth's lifelong love. While ostensibly meant to illustrate the timeless nature of romance, the richness of this relationship makes its modern foil seem superficial by comparison. Eastwood is a fitting cowboy — handsome and sculpted, with a touch of his dad's famous swagger. He's believable as a bull-rider, and shows enough vulnerable charm to be a romantic leading man. The cherubic, pillow-lipped Robertson makes for a fine potential partner. She's pret- ty and sweet, yet headstrong and focused when it comes to her future. Both actors are easy on the eyes, but lack the fireworks, and just plain fire, to be a truly convincing onscreen romance. The script by Craig Bolotin sets up each couple as sacrificing for love, but Sophia and Luke's struggle just doesn't seem as serious. The unnecessary setting of Sophia's sorority house doesn't help: Her sisters apparently exist Review: Bergen shares love life in 'A Fine Romance' By The Associated Press In her new memoir, Candice Bergen shares intimate details surrounding the loves of her life. "A Fine Romance" describes her marriage to an effervescent French director, depicts a deep bond with her daughter, provides an intricate look into the talented cast of her TV show, "Murphy Brown," and concludes by celebrating a new chapter with a new man in New York. Hailing from Hollywood, Bergen is well-equipped to maneuver the sometimes treacherous waters of celebrity life. Her fortunate upbringing enables Bergen to easily adapt to the jet-setting ways of renowned director Louis Malle. While he is immersed with all aspects of the film world, Bergen dives head- first into being the best wife, homemaker and stepmother she can be. It's obvious she adores Malle. Bergen's perspective changes after her daughter, Chloe, is born. Chloe travels to Los Angeles, New York and France as Bergen juggles motherhood and a hectic television career as an '80s icon in fabulous shoulder pads. Unfortunately, she feels like a single mom as Malle spends most of his time working in Europe. It's no wonder that Chloe later shines as Bergen's light after Malle loses his battle with cancer. Bergen's story embraces the good and the bad in her 15-year marriage, but the loss of her husband is devastating. Bergen submerges herself in 1626 Suite D Veterans Blvd. Dublin, Georgia 31021 For All Your Plumbing Needs! 307 Saxon St. - Dublin, GA 31021 family life, movie roles and watching Chloe blossom into a beautiful young lady. She even finds love again with real estate magnate Marshall Rose. Her life soon revolves around rescue animals, planning Chloe's wedding and fending off those stubborn extra pounds. "A Fine Romance" is full of heart. Even though Bergen is surrounded by celebrity friends at the turn of every page, it's evident she is about as down-toearth as they come. There is an honesty in her writing that is both refreshing and encouraging. At the end of the day, she's the one who will laugh with you, cry with you and punch someone in the throat for you should the need arise. 1628 Veterans Blvd • 478-304-1208 275-7477 Superior Pools 278-6968 Liner Replacements & Weekly Maintenance only to wax euphoric about her date's looks, then disappear from the narrative. "I want a cowboy," one says. Both couples are filmed lovingly by George Tillman, Jr. ("Soul Food"), who was inspired by his own 25-year marriage to helm the story. He also brings a gritty realism to the bull-riding shots, using a rider's-view camera to convey the power and intensity of the animal and sport. If only the same power and intensity existed in Sophia and Luke's love affair. Still, the film is likely to satisfy Sparks fans. And it brings something new to the romance genre: bull riding. "The Longest Ride," a 20th Century Fox release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some sexuality, partial nudity and some war and sports action." My mother and I are not close because she was incarcerated for most of my life until recently. I am 16 now, and just found out I'm pregnant. No one knows except the father of my child. For some reason, he is thrilled for us. I, on the other hand, am terrified of the uncertainties. I know what my father will say. He will want me to get an abortion, but I would never choose that for myself or for my baby. My mother is struggling since she was released from prison and is still trying to get on her feet. I live with my grandparents, who don't have the means to support a child. It seems like my only option is to move in with my boyfriend and his family while I finish school and then get a job. Please give me an unbiased perspective. -- UNCERTAIN IN THE SOUTH DEAR UNCERTAIN: You appear to be an intelligent young woman, so I will give it to you straight. Although you think you know what your father will say, you can't know for sure until you talk to him and tell him what's going on. I'm advising you to do that because you may need his help. A loving father will give it to you. If you decide to have this baby, he can't force you to get an abortion. You and your baby's father should also talk to his parents, so that, IF NECESSARY, you will be able to stay with them. You must also be sure to have the best prenatal care possible, so your child will be born healthy. Planned Parenthood has clinics where this care is offered, and you should contact it as soon as possible. If you check its website, www.plannedparenthood.org, you will also find information about adoption. You must also make earning your high school diploma a priority, so you will be able to support and educate the child you're bringing into the world, if you decide to raise him or her yourself. DEAR ABBY: I physically assaulted a male friend (Aiden) who I was -- and still am -- interested in. I'm a survivor of domestic violence and have a troubled past. I have sworn not to touch alcohol, and shared with him some of the horror stories regarding what happens when I drink. A few weeks ago, I hosted a mutual friend's birthday party at my house. Long story short, Aiden suggested I take a shot. I was unwilling at way he wants it. And if that's the case, it is important that you concentrate on your relationships with friends and other family members (if there are any) and activities that bring you happiness because, clearly, your relationship with your son does not. first, but finally agreed to a birthday toast. After that toast, things are blurry for me. According to other friends at the party, I went crazy. I want so bad to tell Aiden that I know what I did was unacceptable, but I know he may never see or speak to me again. As someone who has lived through being abused, I know this is a very difficult thing to ever forgive. How can I even look him in the eye if he ever speaks to me again? -SORRY BEYOND WORDS DEAR SORRY: Recognizing the part that Aiden played in what happened might help. You described your past and warned him about what happens when you have a drink. Knowing that, he NEVER should have suggested you have an alcoholic beverage to make the birthday toast. If your paths cross, stand up straight and say you're sorry. But frankly, he owes you an apology, too. DEAR ABBY: My 34-yearold, single, independent son completely ignores me. He won't answer texts, emails, postal mail or phone calls. Weeks and months go by with no meaningful conversation between us. I am sick of it, and tired of being treated so disrespectfully. I thought I had raised my son to be more thoughtful of others, especially his mother. I'm ready to put an end to my misery by ignoring him back and "forgetting" holidays. That may not seem motherly, but I'm weary of trying to get him to be more responsive. Any suggestions? - IGNORED MOM IN ATLANTA DEAR IGNORED MOM: I don't know how often you have been calling, emailing, texting and writing to your son, but from what you have written, it might be a relief to both of you if you stop -- at least for a while. If he notices the silence and reaches out, you can discuss the reason for it then. However, if he doesn't, you will have to accept that for whatever reason, this is the DEAR ABBY: My daughter just got engaged and is beginning to plan her wedding. Her fiance has been married before, but she hasn't. She wants a band at the reception and he wants a D.J. (which he had at his first wedding). My husband is paying for the entire affair, and he and I support our daughter in this. I know this seems like a small thing, but her fiance is really digging in his heels. Would it be wrong for her to pull the "this is my one and only wedding" card? This fight seems ridiculous to us. What do you think? -- PARENTS OF THE BRIDE DEAR PARENTS: I'm glad you asked. I think that if your daughter goes that route, it may not be her one and only wedding. And I urge you and your husband to stay out of it and let the two lovebirds resolve this for themselves. DEAR ABBY: My wife and I are retired, so we both contribute to household chores. There are no rules as to who does what, but somehow everything gets done. The disagreement we're having relates to laundry. When I do it, the last steps are: Remove the clothes from the dryer, place them on top, then sort, fold and put away. My wife claims that taking the clothes out of the dryer and placing them on top creates wrinkles, and what I really need to do is take one item out of the dryer, fold it, and then repeat until the dryer is empty, sorting as I go. I maintain that this does not seem logical. There is no data to back her claim, and all it does is make extra work for me. I would appreciate your thoughts. -- FLUFF AND FOLD DEAR F AND F: When clothes are removed from the dryer and tossed in a pile, wrinkles can set in. However, if the garments are removed individually and then folded or hung up, they remain wrinkle-free. Confused about Maya’s revelation, Carter questioned her about not disclosing her secret to him when they were engaged to be married. Wyatt grew concerned that Quinn had reverted back to her darker ways after having told her about Brooke and Deacon’s discussion. Quinn confronted Deacon about whether or not he and Brooke have rekindled their relationship. Having made herself clear that she would not be his consolation prize, Quinn put Deacon on the spot to make a decision about who he wants to spend his future with. Feeling as though Rick has the right to know, Carter hinted that Maya isn’t being totally forthcoming about her past. Deacon and Wyatt grew concerned about what Quinn might do next. Quinn arrived at Brooke’s house to let her know exactly whom Deacon chose to be with. Ridge had an ulterior motive when he surprisingly gave Nicole his full support of her auditioning to be a model for Forrester Creations. Brooke set Quinn straight about her interest in Deacon and bluntly voiced her opinion regarding their pending nuptials. Willing to defend his woman to the end, Rick was convinced that Carter’s acting out against Maya because he’s still in love with her. Knowing that she paid a visit to Brooke, Deacon made his feelings to Quinn very clear. Quinn attempted to redeem herself with those that she wronged at Forrester Creations by presenting Rick a gift and extending an olive branch to Ivy. When Brooke came to his defense against Ridge’s criticism, Rick asked his mother to return to work full time. Seeing how frustrated Ridge was following his confrontation with Rick and Brooke, Pam championed him to continue standing up for what he believes in. Carter pondered revealing Maya’s secret when she became the topic of conversation between their coworkers. Scoffing at the allegations that Ridge had made towards her, Brooke unleashed her true feelings about his relationship with Caroline. Nicole became overconfident in her modeling ability as she took part in a test photo shoot. THIS WEEK: Carter pulls Nicole aside to let her know that he’s aware of her blackmailing Maya. Ridge goes on the defensive when Brooke airs her grievances to him about their past together. (AP) — A much-maligned statue of Lucille Ball will get a face lift after it drew worldwide attention as "Scary Lucy," according to the mayor of the western New York village where the 1950s sitcom actress and comedian grew up and her life-size bronze has stood since 2009. Scott Schrecengost said Tuesday that his village will be starting a fundraising campaign on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter to collect donations to rework the Lucy statue from the shoulders up. Schrecengost said he has spoken to a sculptor who agreed to fix the statue for less than the $8,000 to $10,000 quoted previously by the original sculptor, Dave Poulin. "We'd like to have better representation of Lucille Ball in her hometown," Schrecengost told The Associated Press in a phone interview from Celoron, located 60 miles south of Buffalo, New York. The mayor's comments came only hours after Poulin told the AP he was willing to create a new statue for free. But after Schrecengost said he doesn't want Poulin to redo the work, even for free. Poulin said he was "fine" with that decision. Get Rid of this Statue" garnered renewed interest in the wake of local media stories on the statue. Critics of the 400pound statue dubbed it "Scary Lucy," saying its face bears little resemblance to the "I Love Lucy" star. Poulin even used the same term in a letter he released Monday evening apologizing for the statue, calling it "by far my most unsettling sculpture." Poulin said he was on a family vacation with his wife and son last week when the controversy erupted. By the time he returned last weekend to his home in the area, his work was being vilified online as a "nightmare" resembling a drunken zombie. He said he has received "hundreds and hundreds" of angry emails and phone messages, including some death threats. "It's totally insane," Poulin said. "There's a lot of nasty, nasty, nasty things being said about me as an artist and about my work." Poulin, who's in his 50s, said that body of work includes creating more than 120 commissioned public sculptures in- For All Your FINANCING AVAILABLE In an August 2012 photo, a bronze sculpture of Lucille Ball is displayed in Lucille Ball Memorial Park in the village of Celoron, N.Y., in her hometown. None of those have ever resulted in similar criticism, he said. Schrecengost said there was displeasure with Poulin's Lucy statue, which was created a decade ago, from the moment a local couple donated it to the village and it was unveiled in Lucille Ball Memorial Park in August 2009. "Everyone was shocked and agreed it wasn't Lucy," the mayor said. There had been earlier attempts to convince Poulin to redo the statue, but the village didn't have the funds for his fee, Schrecengost said. The plans are to raise enough money online to rework the statue's head, neck and shoulders. If the village can raise up to $20,000, the whole statue may be replaced, he said.
