PASSPORTS & VISAS
A valid passport and visa is required to travel to Russia. Ensure your passport
is valid for at least six months beyond your intended return. You may need
your passport at border crossings or when you check into hotels. It is your
responsibility to secure the required visa(s) before departure. Our reservations
staff or your travel agent will tell you how to obtain an Invitation Letter,
which is needed in order to apply for the Russian visa. As visa conditions
may vary in Russia, Finland and the Baltic States, check with the relevant
embassies, consulates or your travel agent to ensure that all necessary
visas are obtained prior to your departure. Carry your passport and travel
documents in your hand luggage. Keep photocopies of these in a separate
bag as well.

TRAVEL INSURANCE
If you have not yet taken out travel insurance, please see your travel agent
about this before your tour. Foreign hospitalisation and treatment often
require payment in cash prior to providing services and medical evacuation
can be expensive. Travel protection and luggage insurance are highly
recommended. We suggest you purchase a travel protection plan that covers
trip cancellation for medical reasons, trip delay, medical expenses, accidental
death, lost luggage, medical evacuation and airline cancellation charges
under a variety of circumstances.
HEALTH & FITNESS
Our tours and cruises are not physically demanding, however, due to the
nature of many sites you will be visiting, some tours may not be appropriate
for guests with certain medical conditions and physical restrictions. Walking
tours are often on uneven ground or cobblestones and may include stairs
as well as steep inclines. You should be able to stand on your feet for an
extended period of time to visit attractions or when checking in for flights,
cruises and Customs & Immigration. In the lead-up to your tour, we
recommend that you try to walk for an hour at a time at least three times
a week. This will ensure you have the stamina and energy to see and
appreciate the sights we will take you to on tour. You should also ensure
your walking shoes fit well and have been broken in prior to departure.
PRESCRIPTIONS & MEDICAL HISTORY
A copy of your prescriptions is vital in case of any health problems. Prepare
a list of your medications, including the name, dosage, prescribing doctor and
their phone number. If you have health problems, ask your doctor to prepare
your medical history for a foreign doctor. It should include your name, address,
emergency contact, blood type, medical history, current medications, dosages,
drug allergies, reasons for prior hospitalisations and a list of immunisations
and dates. Pack enough medication for the duration of the tour or cruise. Your
medication should be kept close at hand in your purse or carry-on bag rather
than in your checked luggage. It’s a good idea to take a list of your medications
in case they are lost and remember to leave it all in its original container. It’s
also a good idea to bring a copy of your prescription for eyeglasses or contacts.

GRATUITIES
On all Travelmarvel sailings, gratuities to your Cruise Director and ship crew
are included in the tour price. This also applies to land touring, where a local
guide and/or driver is employed.
GRATUITIES WHEN TOURING INDEPENDENTLY
• Most restaurants expect a tip of 5 to 15%. If a meal or service has been
particularly good, leaving another $1 to $2 in rubles is customary, as is
leaving the waiter the small change from your bill if you pay in cash.
If service is not included, a tip is not necessary.
• T ipping is not customary for taxis, and you should negotiate and settle
on your fare before you get into the taxi.
VALUABLES & SECURITY
Do not take anything with you that will create emotional or financial hardship
if lost or stolen. Carry all documents, money, passport, tickets etc. with you.
Do not carry these important items in your suitcase. You may find a money
belt (worn inside clothing) useful while travelling. Never leave hand-luggage
unattended in hotel lobbies or dining rooms. Avoid exploration on your own
of unfamiliar streets or areas. When sightseeing, keep valuables locked in
the safe in your room or stateroom.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
LUGGAGE
Each passenger is entitled to take one piece of luggage that does not exceed
160 cm (63 inches), or weigh more than 20 kg (44 pounds). An extra charge
will be imposed to cover porterage handling of any additional luggage.
Your Tour/Cruise Director will advise you of the exact additional charge.

CLOTHING
Dress while on tour is casual. For daytime we suggest comfortable clothing
that can be layered to accommodate changing weather. Very comfortable
footwear is a must. Breathable windproof/waterproof rain gear (jacket),
fleece jacket/vest or warm jumper, warm jacket, warm hat, hat with brim,
walking trousers/shorts, t-shirts, non-cotton base layers of varying weight,
clothing and shoes for downtime and restaurants, underwear and socks.
Bring some smart casual outfits for evenings. Perhaps pack a dressier outfit
for the Welcome Dinner or if you are planning an evening at the theatre.
OTHER NECESSITIES TO PACK
Other necessities are passport, wallet (cash, credit cards, bank cards), money
belt, airline tickets/e-ticket confirmation details, Travelmarvel travel bag (to
hold extra layers, water, rain gear, snacks, sunglasses etc.), one 1 litre zip-top
clear plastic bag to carry all liquids, gels and aerosols in carry-on luggage,
medications and copies of prescriptions, sunscreen and lip balm, sunglasses,
toiletries, etc. Recommended optional items include insect repellent, small
umbrella, camera/memory card/film and charger plug adapter and current
converter for all electronics, travel alarm clock, binoculars, list of important
addresses and contact numbers, photocopy of front page of passport (kept
separate from passport), reading material and Russian phrase book.
LEARN ABOUT YOUR DESTINATION
It may be helpful to do a little research on the locations that you will be
visiting. Familiarise yourself with the area, cities, the language spoken and
transport information. Refer to your itinerary when researching and try to
prepare yourself for anything that may eventuate. The more you know about
your destination, the more you’ll appreciate all that you see when you arrive.
During your travels, you’ll encounter new customs and lifestyles. Appreciate
and enjoy the differences as this process of discovery is one of the many
benefits of travelling. Despite language barriers, a smile is universal.
Friendliness and tolerance towards others, including your fellow travellers,
Cruise Director and crew, is essential for everyone’s enjoyment of the tour.

Learn about Russia’s fascinating cultural heritage
CULTURE & TRADITIONS
Russia is a region that may be very different to anything you have experienced
before. Expense, crowds and differing cultures can result in initial culture
shock but should be seen as an exciting new adventure. Over the years of
touring in Russia we have come to love this region but we know that we may
encounter some challenges along the way. In some parts of Russia there are
very different attitudes to time-keeping and service. Buses and trains will
sometimes be late, plumbing can sometimes be temperamental and waiters
may not seem as keen to serve you as you may be used to. If you are able
to travel with patience and a sense of humour, then we know that you will
be captivated by every part of Russia.
CURRENCY & SPENDING MONEY
We advise that you carry minimal cash with you to Russia. On arrival, the
most convenient way to acquire money is via an ATM. Most ATMs offer a
cash advance on your debit/credit card, but check with your bank at home
about the fee for this service as some can be quite high. Before you depart,
ensure your credit cards are valid for at least 30 days after your proposed
date of return and that they are activated. It’s a good idea to verify with
your bank that your card will work overseas. Most Russian ATM pinpads only
have numbers, so if your PIN contains letters, make note of the corresponding
numbers. In many places in Russia, signatures are not accepted for credit
cards and a PIN number may be required in order to complete the transaction.
You can obtain local currency at ATMs where available, but we advise to
always carry 2000 Russian rubles emergency cash. The only officially allowed
currency is the Ruble. We recommend you to exchange your cash directly at
the airport. This should be enough to get you into town to withdraw more
money. Carrying cash also covers restaurant bills and other services. Note
that hotel receptions and after hours money exchanges carry high commissions
and some stores do have a minimum spend amount. Also note that most
hotels require a credit card rather than cash card for a deposit upon check in.
The Ruble (P) is the official currency in Russia. Other currencies include
Finland (Euro), Estonia (Euro), Latvia (Euro), and Lithuania (Litas). For the
most up-to-date exchange rate, please check with your bank, a newspaper
or www.xe.com (universal currency converter).

ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES
Electricity is 220-volt. A European plug adaptor is necessary if you plan
to bring appliances from home.
AT THE AIRPORT
LATE OR MISSED FLIGHTS
If your flight is delayed or if you miss a connecting flight, please call the
Travelmarvel/APT Europe office with your new flight details as they will make
every effort to meet you when you arrive. If you are not met due to a delayed
or missed flight, please follow the instructions for Transfers Not Arranged by
Travelmarvel (see pg. 14 for details). Retain any receipts, in case you need
to make a claim with the Airline or Travel Insurance Company.
FLY IN COMFORT & AVOID JETLAG
• Wear loose-fitting clothes and comfortable shoes during the flight.
• Try to hydrate yourself constantly with water (avoid caffeine, alcohol
and carbonated drinks and eat lightly).
•A
lleviate pressure in your ears by chewing gum, yawning, swallowing
or gently blowing your nose.
• If possible, try to walk up and down the aisle to stretch out your limbs
and get blood circulating. You could also do a few isometric exercises.
• If you arrive in Europe in the morning, try to sleep during your flight
so you can stay up until the evening.
•A
void wearing contact lenses during your flight because aircraft cabin
air tends to dry them out.
CHECK IN
It is important that you arrive at the airport at least two hours before
domestic flights and three hours in advance for international flights.
This allows time to check in your baggage and present your passport
and ticket, get seat assignments and boarding passes and make your
way through security procedures to the boarding area.

The Volga-Baltic Waterway links the Volga River with the Baltic Sea
RESTRICTIONS – CHECKED LUGGAGE
International carriers may impose fees or require you to remove articles if
weight or size limits are exceeded. We recommend that you contact your
airline(s) or travel agent for specific information prior to departure, especially
as size and weight limits can vary between airlines.
RESTRICTIONS – HAND LUGGAGE
For your comfort, limit hand luggage to one bag that fits under your aircraft
seat or in the overhead compartment. You will receive a Travelmarvel travel
bag with your documentation. On board the plane, ensure you have your passport,
airline tickets, medication and all your travel documents in your hand luggage.
LUGGAGE TAGS
We supply Travelmarvel luggage tags for you to fill out and attach to your
suitcase and hand luggage. It is also a good idea to put a label with your
name, address and telephone number on the inside of your suitcase and hand
luggage. For security reasons, keep all unchecked luggage in your immediate
possession. Unattended luggage can be confiscated by airport personnel.
LOST/DELAYED LUGGAGE
Sometimes luggage is delayed during air transit. It is recommended to take
a change of clothing and any essential medication in your hand luggage, or
pack some clothing in your travel companion’s bag. Place a copy of the hotel
contacts inside each piece of luggage. If your luggage is lost, this will help
the airline find you. Should your luggage be delayed, it is the responsibility of
the airline to deliver it to you. Claims for reimbursement should be submitted
directly to the airline – a claim form should be filled out at the appropriate
airline desk before leaving the baggage area. If you need assistance in
contacting the airline for information regarding your delayed luggage,
please ask your Tour/Cruise Director or local host.

AIRPORT & AIRLINE SECURITY
The following is based on information issued by the Australian
Government regarding liquid, aerosol and gel restrictions on flights (see
www.travelsecure.infrastructure.gov.au for further information). These rules
concern flights coming into and departing Australia only. We advise you to
check with your airline for clarification of regulations before you leave.
Otherwise, these items are likely to be confiscated if they are kept in your
hand luggage.
Each container of liquids, aerosols or gels in your carry-on luggage must be
100 ml or less. All must be sealed in a transparent, 1 litre (or less) resealable
plastic bag. You may still carry through the screening point prescription
medicines, baby products and non-prescription medicines that you need for
the flight. Proof of need may be required. You will have to surrender any
liquids, aerosols or gels greater than 100 ml that you are carrying at the
screening point. This includes duty free items (at many airports, you are able
to purchase duty free items after you have passed through the screening
point for your international flight).
Items allowed include empty containers such as mugs or flasks, cosmetics
and toiletries such as tampons, talcum powder, contact lenses and lens
solution, solid foods, baby products like empty beakers or flasks, baby milk
or juice, medicines including prescribed medication (e.g. insulin) and
essential non-prescribed medication.
Items over 100 ml not allowed include drinks in cans, bottles, liquid
cosmetics and toiletries that are in liquid or gel form, such as perfumes,
creams and products in pressurised containers such as hairspray, shaving
foam or gel and aerosol deodorants, liquid-based food products.
CUSTOMS
To prevent the introduction of exotic pests and diseases on your return home,
arriving travellers are screened and luggage is often inspected or x-rayed by
customs or quarantine officers. All food needs to be declared, as well as items
of plant (including wood) and animal origin. Travellers should also declare
items on which duty or tax might be payable (check with customs about the
duty free concession). See also the customs website listed on page 6.

TRANSFERS
Transfers must be pre-arranged at the time of booking and flight details
need to be provided to confirm this service.
Transfer Meeting Arrangements
You will be welcomed on arrival by a Travelmarvel representative, who
will be holding a Travelmarvel sign. If you cannot locate your transfer
representative, your itinerary will advise of a number to call.
Transfers Not Arranged By Travelmarvel
If you have independent travel arrangements prior to your Travelmarvel tour
and do not have a Travelmarvel transfer, the Tourist Information Office at
your arrival city will be able to offer further assistance with directions to the
ship or hotel. If you transfer to the ship on your own, we recommend you call
the ship prior to confirm the ship’s docking location. If you require any
assistance please contact the Travelmarvel/APT Europe Office on the
numbers provided in your personal itinerary.
HOTEL ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE INFORMATION
Check-In
The official check-in time at hotels in Russia is 3 pm local time, however
where possible, the hotel will try and have your room available earlier.
If your flight arrives in the morning, luggage can be dropped off at the hotel
before check-in and delivered to your room later.
Check-Out
Check-out times vary, but are usually at 11 am or noon. If you have a late
afternoon or evening flight, most hotels have a luggage room where you can
store your luggage until you depart for the airport.

PASSENGERS REQUIRING SPECIAL ASSISTANCE
Disabled facilities on board our river ships are limited and this can include
some accommodation also. It is important to note that the MS Yesenin is not
equipped with an elevator, so passengers must walk up and down stairs to
manoeuvre between decks and in some instances to disembark or embark the
vessel. River cruise vessels are not equipped with wheelchair ramps.
Wheelchairs must be collapsible as hallways and doors on board may not
be wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. Additionally, coaches and
minibuses used for transfers and shore excursions are not equipped with
wheelchair ramps. Any condition requiring special attention must be reported
to Travelmarvel at the time of reservation. Facilities and services for
passengers with disabilities differ among destinations and, in some cases,
may be limited or nonexistent. Participants requiring special assistance must
be accompanied by a person responsible for and physically able to provide all
such assistance. We regret that we cannot provide individual assistance to a
tour member for walking, getting on/off tour buses and other transportation
vehicles, or other personal needs.

Relax in the onboard library
COACH SAFETY
Passengers must remain seated at all times while the coach is in motion to
avoid serious injury. Passengers using the emergency bathroom do so at their
own risk. Hand luggage and other personal items should be safely stored in
the overhead luggage racks or under your seat to keep the aisles clear.
Heavy items, bottles etc. should not be stored overhead. No passengers are
permitted to remain on the coach during stops. Do not leave any valuable
items on the coach. Please watch the stairs and overhead entrances when
ascending into the coach and check for traffic when exiting the coach. Please
follow these safety precautions and take the time to note all emergency
exits. If fitted, seatbelts must be worn.
MINORS
Minors under the age of 18 travelling to foreign countries must be accompanied
by an adult and have a notarised letter of consent signed by the parent(s) not
travelling with them. Parents, guardians and chaperones are responsible for
overseeing the conduct of minors in their care. As such, minors may not be left
unsupervised on board the ship. A parent or legal guardian MUST accompany
children under the age of 18 on all tours for safety and liability reasons. Please
contact our Reservations Team for more information.
LANGUAGE
The official language used by Travelmarvel staff worldwide and on board
the ship is English. All staff, crew and local guides speak fluent English in
Europe and Russia. All announcements and lectures will be in English.
TRAVELLER FEEDBACK
We are sincerely interested in your detailed comments about your experience
and holiday. We strive to further improve our tours in response to these
comments. On board, you will receive a Travelmarvel Traveller Feedback
form. Please take a few minutes to complete it and return it to your Cruise/
Tour Director. Your comments are then sent directly to Travelmarvel in both

Stay in an indulgent suite
ON BOARD – CRUISE INFORMATION
EMBARKATION/DISEMBARKATION
Official embarkation of the ship is at 3 pm. This allows staff to prepare your
stateroom. In case of an early arrival, you may check your luggage on to your
ship and explore the embarkation port city. On departure, check-out is 9 am.
Please consider these times when arranging your flights as luggage storage
is not always possible depending on your ship’s schedule.
SHIP SCHEDULE & SHORE EXCURSIONS
The ship will sail promptly from each stop in accordance with its cruising
schedule. The ship is unable to delay departure for passengers who may
not be on board. Unless you are on a shore excursion accompanied by the
appointed guide, it is your responsibility to make your own way to rejoin the
ship at a subsequent stop. Without limitation, Travelmarvel is not liable for
any costs incurred if you miss the ship’s departure for any reason.
SHIPBOARD ACCOUNT & PAYMENT OPTIONS
For your convenience, all purchases and paid services on board are billed
with a guest check and added to your shipboard account. At the end of the
cruise, you will receive a total, which can be paid with cash or by credit card.
SHIP SERVICES & AMENITIES
Beverages
Coffee and tea are available free of charge throughout the day and during
meals. Juice is complimentary during breakfast. Water on board the ship
is not drinkable. Complimentary beer, wine and soft drink is included with
dinner on board.
Dietary Requirements
If you have special dietary requests, please advise your travel agent or
Travelmarvel at the time of booking and remind the Maitre d’ on board on
arrival. Please note that facilities to grant special dietary requests on board
are limited and, while the chefs will try to accommodate requests, no
guarantees can be made.

Gift Shop
MS Yesenin has an onboard gift shop offering souvenirs and gifts as well
as a small selection of personal and toiletry items.
Hours of Worship
If you would like to attend service and it fits in with your itinerary, ask your
Tour/Cruise Director for local places and times of worship.
Laundry/Iron
Laundry services are available on board. Price lists will be available in your
stateroom. Clothes cannot be dry cleaned on board. Self-service laundry
facilities are not available on board. For safety reasons, it is not permitted
to use an iron in your stateroom.
Library
MS Yesenin has a small book collection available free of charge to all
passengers. Please return any books that you borrow before the end of the
cruise. The ship appreciates any donations that you may contribute should
you decide to leave books or magazines behind.
Meals
All meals on board are included and are served in the dining room in a single
sitting. Open seating allows you to sit at different tables if you wish to meet
other passengers. European chefs prepare all meals and comprise Russianstyle food that has been adjusted for our passengers. On board, enjoy a
buffet breakfast in the restaurant. Lunch offers salads, soups, a choice of
mains and dessert. Dinner is a multi-course meal with a selection of mains.
Medical
Medical services are available in the ship’s infirmary. MS Yesenin travels
with a dedicated doctor on board.
Stamps, Postcards & Mail

Air Conditioning & Heating
All staterooms are air-conditioned and heated with an individual control.
If you have any questions regarding your stateroom’s temperature control,
please check the instructions or enquire at reception.
Electricity
Electricity on board is 220 volts and the volt points are European and will
require a European adapter.
Internet
Internet stations and complimentary wireless internet are available, but please
bring your own laptop or other portable device. Our ship uses a satellite
system, so routing may cause restricted or unclear reception at times.
Safe
All staterooms are equipped with a safe. It is recommended that you place
your valuables in the safe when away from the stateroom. Items that exceed
the size of the safe can be checked into the ship’s safe at reception.
Telephone
Each stateroom has its own telephone. It can be used to call cabin to cabin
and ship to shore. Since the telephone system functions via satellite, there
may be times, depending on routing, when reception (and therefore, calling)
is not possible. Instructions for telephone use are in each stateroom. Any
charges are placed on your shipboard account.
Television
There are flat-screen televisions available in the Library/Reading Room and
Conference Centre. You can receive BBC, Eurosport and Universal. Please
ask your cruise staff for further details. As this ship uses a satellite system,
depending on routing, reception may at times be restricted or unclear.

As the ship approaches the lock, a gate opens. The ship enters the lock
chamber until the ship is completely inside. The gate behind the ship closes.
Then the lock is drained until it reaches the same water level as the lower
side of the chamber. The second gate opens and the ship exits at the lower
level of the lock.

• Moscow: Political powerhouse – home to the cupola-crowned Kremlin
and the imposing former Soviet parade ground of Red Square – Moscow
is Russia’s modern-day capital. Big, bold and built to impress, from its
elaborate underground metro to its cloud-topping Stalinist skyscrapers,
the Seven Sisters. There’s also no shortage of world-class museums and

• St Petersburg: Major sea port, cultural capital and Russia’s historic
’window to the west’, the country’s second largest city was the vision
of Tsar Peter the Great. This progressive outlook has endured, with
contemporary accolades including ’The Venice of the North’, thanks to
Petersburg’s lavish European-style architecture lining its many canals.
The city has also experienced untold hardship during revolutionary
uprisings and the 900-day Seige of Leningrad, during World War II.
Formerly known as Leningrad during the Soviet era, the city was only
restored to its original name in 1991. Along with its astounding art
collection at the Hermitage Museum and wealth of churches, cathedrals
and palaces, St Petersburg is back to its former glory with a fresh look
to the future.
• Uglich: Set in an idyllic location on the Volga River, Uglich greets you with
its medieval monastery, onion-domed churches and historic charm. One of
the highlights of the Golden Ring, a group of ancient cities to the northeast
of Moscow, Uglich offers an enchanting glimpse into Russia’s past.
• Yaroslavl: The jewel at the centre of Russia’s Golden Ring cities, Yaroslavl
has long been known as a city of ancient churches, while its historic
quarter is also World Heritage-listed. Situated at the confluence of the
Volga and Kotorsl Rivers, as well as only 250 km northeast of Moscow,
Yaroslavl is also regarded as a major transport hub and rural centre.
• Goritsy: This tiny settlement on the banks of the White Lake is home to the
Goritsy Monastery of Resurrection, a historic Russian Orthodox convent,
which is now a museum. It has strong connections with the 14th-century
Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery in the town of Kirillov some 15 km away, to
which it is understood Ivan the Terrible had planned to retire.

izhi Island: World Heritage-listed, this island forms the backdrop to an
international icon – the Kizhi Pogost church – within a small village on the
shore of Lake Onega. Visitors traverse the globe to make the pilgrimage to
this remote northeastern corner of Russia, and see the intricate ensemble
of wooden architecture, said to have been created without a single nail.
