Weekly Cub Scout Newsletter Sunday, May 13, 2012 Thu May 10, 2012 This evening the Cub Scouts did a walkabout at the Stewart Farm off of Crescent Road in South Surrey. The picture on the right shows the Stewart Farm House which was built in 1894 by Surrey pioneer John Stewart for his family, this charming restored Victorian farmhouse features a wrap-around verandah, an elegant parlour and dining room, and a wonderful warm kitchen with a working wood burning stove The picture below shows Akela talking to the Cub Scouts about the history of the Stewart farm before everyone headed out along the trails in the Elgin Heritage Park. ` The boys had a chance of working a water pump that they found to the east of the Farm House. Everyone trekked along the trails seeing kayaks and sailboats on the Nicomekl River. The Leaders brought thermoses of hot water and midway through the walk everyone stopped and enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate. Thu May 17, 2012 This is your chance to earn your Cycling Badge – everyone will have their bike and helmet inspected and then after everyone has had a chance to earn their Cycling Badge the Cub Scouts will bike on the trails at the South Surrey Bike Park. Thu May 24, 2012 No meeting tonight due to Link Camp tomorrow Page 2 of 11 21st South Surrey Cub Scout Weekly Newsletter Sunday, May 13, 2012 ` Link Camp Fri May 25, 2012 to Sun May 27, 2012 This weekend the Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts and Venturer Scouts will travel up to the United Church Camp at the south end of Cultus Lake for our annual Link Camp. At the four way stop at #3 and Vedder Mountain Road, take a left onto Vedder Mountain Road. Follow Vedder Mountain Road to Cultus Lake Road (this is the first full traffic light intersection that you will come to). Turn right onto Cultus Lake Road (you will see a sign that indicates the right turn will take you to Lindell Beach). After Maple Bay Picnic Grounds, watch for the chain link fence, and the CLUCC sign on the RHS of the road. Turn right onto Lindell Avenue. Our driveway is on the right hand side of the road, at the end of the fence, and across from the Lindell Beach store. Page 5 of 11 21st South Surrey Cub Scout Weekly Newsletter Sunday, May 13, 2012 ` Link Camp 2012 The Leaders are finalizing the plans for Link Camp but here are a few things that they are looking at: On Saturday morning the Cub Scouts will be growing crystals on a string. By the time everyone goes home on Sunday each Cub Scout should be able to see how much their crystal has grown. The Leaders have the glass jars that the Cub Scouts brought to the meeting in April. Later on Saturday morning the Cub Scouts will climb up nearby Teapot Hill ... this is considered an easy climb as you go up 250 meters in a 6 km hike over 2 hours. As the Cub Scouts stop at the various lookouts they will see great views of Cultus Lake (see picture on the right) and the Columbia Valley (see the picture below).
