Door County Sled Dogs November/December 2015 From the Trail with Musher Bonnie, DCSD Director As a founder of this exci ng and fulfilling organiza on, I am truly honored and oh-so-proud to be wri ng this first of hopefully many hellos to be included in our future newsle ers. I an cipate much fun ge ng to know each of you be er. I am excited about the prospect of repor ng the many educa onal happenings always taking place through the efforts of all our rescued dogs and their human volunteers! So much is always going on and finally another way to connect with you - all of you - good good friends of the rescues. Alone we are strong but together we are victorious! Through your help and everyone’s efforts, I am proud and happy to also report that we con nually manage to not only save the lives of some wonderful dogs (in just the last few months alone) but to genuinely make a difference in the quality of their en re future. A,er having lived their lives on chains and in kennels, loving smart and energe c dogs like Cruz, Quik, Loki, and Budders will now enjoy long, happy, and healthy lives as beloved pets. Most will remain within our organiza on of amazingly wonderful sled dogs, learning to work alongside all the veteran dogs, such as Lb, George, and Happy. They’re going to love it! These next few months will be very busy for sure! We will be permanently welcoming new rescued dogs into both mine and Musher Rick’s household while mentoring our other rehomed dogs along the way. We’re proud to report that we currently have 39! permanently rescued dogs - all official Door County Sled Dogs – even Senior Ambassador and Special Needs… Isn’t this great? They’ll all be happily looking forward to the many ongoing educa onal scout and school presenta ons, parades, Meet n’ Greets and family dog sled rides that will be the norm for this Winter season. We will be at Discovery World Museum on Dec. 20th in Milwaukee for a great holiday Meet n’ Greet and perhaps if Mother Nature smiles on us, we’ll even have reserved dog sled rides! If we do, that’ll be pre y early in the season, even for us. Also for the team’s 5th year in a row, one of our favorites – Breakfast with Santa/the Lions Club will be happening before we all know it and all the sled dogs will get to wear their holiday hats! Picture it - we can’t wait! There’s no be er way to get into the holiday spirit than by helping others. Addi onally, we will be in Illinois and Sheboygan once again and hope to do a lot more in Door County! If you don’t reside in these areas, know that in our hearts, we bring all of you along with us (and woo, we have so many hearts here) because truly, these amazingly wonderful sled dogs can’t make it without you to cheer them on! Speaking of cheering the team on - we are hoping to once again work with and support others by racing for charity in the “Make a Wish” sled dog race in early December! Since this is just a sampling of our upcoming outreach efforts, please keep us in your hearts for safekeeping. Con nued next page Door County Sled Dogs Page 2 Bob’s Weather Report The weather this summer in Door County has been delighOul. Cool evenings and comfortable temperatures during the days. Me and the rest of the team have been res ng up for our upcoming sledding season. We have been digging holes, rolling in the grass and taking long walks with our musher friends. Predicons on the weather channel are for an unusually warm winter, with li le precipita on. They say our southern friend “El Nino” is going to blow warm dry air our way all winter. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says very cold temperatures with lots of snow. I vote for the cold and snow. Did you know that op mum temperature for a Siberian Husky to run is 10 degrees below zero? With colder temperatures and lots of snow me and my buddies will be living the dream. Well I have to get back to the weather map; they are changing the predic ons as I write. Be sure to check back in the next issue and see how our Mother Earth and her son Fall is trea ng the team. BOB Meet DCSD Volunteers: The Dennis Schmid Family Here is why we like to volunteer with the Door County Sled Dogs: “It is very important that our dogs Li leman, Rose and Bailey live with us and not in a shelter, (2nd to 5th homes for placement); they have us for the rest of their lives. Having Rick and Bonnie teach us how to train and care for the dogs, along with sledding, has been priceless. Watching my girls (Danielle and Josephine) doing the Make-a-Wish charity race "Can't Depend on Snow" makes me very proud as a Dad, and as a musher, too! When driving around town using the DCSD sta on wagon, we get great looks and comments. I'm proud to talk about our group when people come to pet the dogs!” ~Dennis Schmid Long me volunteers, The Schmid Family: Dennis, Danielle, Josephine, Jennifer (top row), Rose, Bailey, and Li leman (bo om row). From the Trail with Musher Bonnie, DCSD Director con nued from front page Your con nued love and support make all of these connec ons between helping dogs in need while at the same me posi vely and consistently impac ng others, possible. We always say this is only possible because “they are such good good dogs” but we know the truth is, it’s a bigger team effort than that – they ARE such good good dogs but then, they’re really blessed because YOU are such good good friends. I do hope you enjoy our lst edi on newsle er, we’d love to hear from you! ~God bless you, Musher Bonnie PS. Please don’t forget your furry friends here this holiday season. When these big days arrive, the dogs are working hard to make great things happen. They surely do need your help with items from their Wish List and of course your dona on genuinely keeps everyone healthy and happy. As we move into eye of the storm and a real whirlwind of ac vity, we wish each of you a happy and healthy holiday! Think snow everyone! ~xoxo Musher Bonnie Door County Sled Dogs Page 3 Ask Jellie-Mae My human has been spending too much "me tex"ng and surfing the web. What can I do Jelly – Mae? Signed: LOST. Jellie-Mae: Dear Lost, Jellie-Mae is a Seppala Siberian Husky. It’s not unusual for her to jump 6 '. into the air to show us how badly she wants to go mushing! We call her the ballerina but she’s convinced she’s the strongest, fastest dog of all!” This surfing and tex ng has become a problem for all of us K-9's. I spent some me talking to my humans, but they didn't seem to understand. They just looked at me and smiled with a blank look on their faces. Once in a while they would try to distract me with a biscuit or a bone, but I con nued to address them and tried to counsel them on the loss of my companionship. Well in the end I began to connect with them the only way I know. I started to po y in the house, I tore up their favorite chair and I snapped at the mailman. I’m not sure, but I think that they were blaming me for this behavior. Now my humans are walking with me without their technology and we spend me playing each day. It was a hard ba le, but well worth it. I have my humans back and we have a life in the “here and now”. You need to get your humans to put away their toys and you will have your friend back. That's all for this issue. If you have a ques on please send an e-mail to me, Ask Jellie-Mae at eddiemoobear@aol.com. New Rescues: Meet Budders and Quik Door County Sled Dogs Page 5 Door County Sled Dogs New Education Center and Museum in Ephraim Our long- me dream of having an educa onal center and museum in Door County has become real. On October 19, with the help of Boo Boo, and a generous donor, DCSD closed on their new Educa on Center on Highway 42 on the north side of Ephraim. With the help of volunteers, the dogs were able to visit the new Educa on Center immediately following the signing of the documents. What was exci ng was that for the en re me the dogs and bus were there people kept pulling into the parking lot to meet them and learn about DCSD. There is much work to be done to prepare the building for the Nov 10 Open House. Thank you to all who are making this possible. Plan on visi ng the center next summer to see all that we will have done. Perhaps you might want to par cipate in one of the hoped for programs.
