www.stationerytoday.stationerytrendsmag.com Monday, May 17, 2010 Stationery Today The Official National Stationery Show® Daily Optimism reigns at 2010 National Stationery Show By Kimberly Warren Associate Publisher The big words on the trade show floor during the 64th annual National Stationery Show were “positivity” and “optimism” — from both buyers and exhibitors. Jeannae Briscoe, from J. Pink and Co. in Sunderland, Md., said she was enjoying this year’s show and the opportunities it allowed her to meet with her vendors. “I like seeing new prod- Sharon Campbell, left, and William Campbell nss_day2_2010.indd 1 ucts and what’s available,” she said. “You get to meet people you talk to on the phone every day. And, reps can’t carry everything.” This was the fifth year the women from J. Pink and Co. attended the NSS. First-time attendee Sharon Campbell, of Live. Love. Paper. in Norfolk, Va., echoed Briscoe’s sentiments. “I’ve seen a lot of the vendors on the Internet, but to actually be able to see their products has been NSS names Best New Product recipients By Kimberly Warren Associate Publisher great,” Campbell said. Campbell has been in business for one year and said NSS has been fantastic but somewhat overwhelming. “I’m taking the first year to see what it’s like. I’ll be more prepared next year.” Exhibitors, too, expressed feeling positive and having a good — and busy — opening day. Steve Klassen of Kate & Birdie (#1449) said that the Seven National Stationery Show exhibitors were honored with Best New Product Awards Sunday. The awards are presented in seven categories and are considered a distinguished honor within the social stationery industry, as evidenced by the exclamations of excitement heard on the trade show floor Sunday afternoon. “It’s our big moment!” exclaimed Anne Schultz, of Hello Hanna, winner of the Best New Product Award in the Party category. Shannon Martin, of Shannon Martin/Girl Designer, couldn’t hide her excitement after receiving her award in the Lifestyle/ Specialty Gift category. “Yay! That’s so sweet,” she said. “I’m so happy!” OPTIMISM continued on pg. 2 PRODUCTS continued on pg. 2 DAY 2 TODAY at a glance Show hours Monday, May 17 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 18 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 19 9 a.m. to Noon Today’s education seminars (Room 1C02/03) • Bridal Stationery Trends 2010 8 a.m. (exhibitors) • Bridal Stationery Trends 2010 10 a.m. (attendees) • 60 Dynamic Display Ideas Noon • Teach & Learn Forum: Tweaking Your Tweets 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Today’s special events • USPS Butterfly Stamp Release 9:30 a .m. • Meet the Authors 10 a.m. & 4 p.m. • 22nd Annual International Greeting Card Awards 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Complete schedule on page 6 INSIDE • Let{her} Press • Ladies of Letterpress • The Knot’s Wedding Trends • Show floor manners 7/8/10 4:44 PM 2 www.stationerytoday.stationerytrendsmag.com Monday, May 17, 2010 DAY 2 OPTIMISM continued from pg. 1 first two hours of the show this year were the best he’s seen for the first day during NSS. He said their booth was busy with people checking out their new products and well as their favorites. The company had an especially positive response to its new line of wrapping paper, inspired by their greeting Debbie Lundeen cards. “It’s nice to see when you work hard on something and invest money to see it pay off,” said Gloria Wall, of Kate & Birdie’s new wrapping paper line. Debbie Lundeen, of P B Swammich (#1258), is exhibiting at NSS for the first year and said she’s having a “great” experience. “It’s a really happy place, and everybody’s helping everybody else,” she said. The positivity wasn’t only recognizable in the orders being placed or the comments being heard on the Show floor. It also was PRODUCTS continued from pg. 1 The categories are Papercraft & Scrapbooking, Party, Social Stationery, Luxury, Desk Accessories, Lifestyle/ Specialty Gift and Think Green. The user simply writes his/her on the special paper, lights it and watches it fly into the sky. The wishing kits are available in two sizes and many different designs, each including packs of Flying Wish Paper, platform cards, pencils and matches. “Our tagline is ‘Write it, light it, watch it fly’ — and that’s exactly what happens,” Lambie said. “Seeing is believing, so we hope everyone will visit and try it out.” Buyers who visit the booth also will be given a free kit of Flying Wish Paper as a sample. In just over a year on the market, Flying Wish Paper is available in seven countries, including close to 400 retailers in the U.S. The product has been featured on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” Marthastewart. com, CNBC’s “The Big Idea,” and Better TV. “Flying Wish Paper is the only product of its kind. It flies!” Lambie said. “The experience can be whatever you want it to be — a wish at holidays and birthdays, a toast at weddings and anniversaries, a note of gratitude at Thanksgiving, a pledge to your New Year’s resolution, a personal wish to direct your future — it is always dramatic and beautifully inspirational.” For more information, visit booth 1757 or www.flyingwish paper.com. Raver and Ryden, who also are twin sisters, are quickly becoming leaders in the fastest growing new genre of studio photography: newborn baby portraiture. The public can now see for themselves with “Sleeping Beauties: Newborns in Dreamland,” available from Sellers Publishing. In September 2009 NBC’s “Today Show” aired an interview with Raver where several of the sisters’ photographs were shown. The interview was later posted on YouTube and caused a worldwide sensation. At their website, www. kelleyryden.com, people began to visit in record numbers with an estimated 11 percent of the viewers staying at least 15 minutes to check nss_day2_2010.indd 10 out the sisters’ work. Sellers Publishing will publish books, calendars, greeting cards and stationery featuring their images of sleeping newborns, with the initial collection to be seen in the “Sleeping Beauties: Newborns in Dreamland.” A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the book are being donated by Sellers Publishing Inc., to nonprofit organizations whose mission is improving the health and welfare of children worldwide. “I saw the NBC piece featuring Tracy and Kelley’s images of newborns and immediately flew out to Omaha where they live and work,” said Ronnie Sellers, owner and publisher of Sellers Publishing. “I have been in the publishing business for 30 years, and can only think of a few instances when I’ve run across images as emotionally powerful as those photographed by Tracy and Kelley.” What makes Raver and Ryden’s photography unique is that most of their subjects are only a few days old. In the past, studio portraits of babies usually weren’t taken until the babies were old enough to Booth sit up by themselves. Now, #2931-2937 more and more parents are opting to have professional portraits taken almost immediately after their children are born. Another distinctive characteristic of their work is that most of the newborns they photograph are natural, curly positions, like they sleeping when their portraits are taken, and they use a minimum of are in the womb, and after the props. first hour or so when they get used to us positioning them, they are “Newborns are naturally very sleepy, and we ask the moms to pretty easy to work with.” Learn more at booths 2931get their bellies nice and full before arriving at the studio,” the sis- 2937 or at www.sellerspublishing. com. ters said. “We try to work towards 7/8/10 4:44 PM DAY 2 11 Kate Aspen introduces 2010 favor collection Love is in the air with romantic favors in Kate Aspen’s popular “Lovebird” favor collection. M anners on the Show Floor Tips for Attendees — Finding the best and brightest quickly. 1. Be gracious. It’s courteous to meet and greet, but be mindful that people are there on business. Respect others’ time and schedule. Becoming too chatty without any interest in ordering may actually keep them from helping other clients. 2. Network in person. There is sure to be a lot of Tweeting, buzzing and beeping on the showroom floor. Remember that the people in our presence are always the most important, so it’s important to use our social smarts with our smart phones. 3. Leave calling cards. A business card is the perfect nonverbal way to ask someone to come calling. Leaving too many may leave us with a trail of people who will be following up. To save ourselves and others time and energy it’s best to be mindful in how many cards we leave behind. Brides are choosing to have each piece hand-illustrated or are hiring an artist to design them and then do the digital printing themselves. 3-D Save-the-Dates! As the 3-D craze sweeps Hollywood, it also could bring an ultrafunky effect to wedding stationery. Imagine a guest’s face when she opens her wedding invite and finds her own pair of 3-D glasses. Breaking the Pattern Instead of sticking to one wedding motif, brides are mixing it up by incorporating different, but similar, patterns on each placecard or invitation. The slight variance of each piece can add visual interest to the escort card table and keep things from looking too uniform. Custom Illustrations One of the hottest new wedding paper trends: Custom-illustrated stationery featuring architectural sketches of a wedding venue and handwritten wedding details of the weekend. Crossword Puzzle Programs Brides can build customized puzzles online (such as PuzzleMaker.com) and make each clue and answer about the bridal party or wedding (“Where did Brian and Amanda go on their first date?” “You may now ____ the bride.”). Cocktail Hour Coasters Instead of spending their entire stationery budget on over-the-top invites, some brides are choosing to go simpler on the invites and get extras for the cocktail hour like personalized coasters and stirrer sticks with their monogram. Wedding Weekend Timeline Cards Similar to the relationship timeline save-the-date idea, a “weekend of events” card is now being included in the welcome baskets. Brides like designs with kitschy graphics and fun and relaxed wording. Wedding Tree Guest Books The new guest book? A wedding guest tree. Brides are having local artists help them create a basic tree shape on a poster and providing paper leaves for guests to sign and attach. For an even more personal touch, we like the idea of setting out green ink pads and letting guests create the leaves with their thumbprint. He was on hand to sign autographs in celebration of the line of invitations he designed for the company. Bielec has been working with the team at Paper So Pretty for around a year and said he’s most enjoyed working on a line of Halloween stationery, called Little Creeps. “Halloween is my favorite time of year because you can really be outrageous and nobody says anything,” he said. Working in stationery design has been a new realm for Bielec, who is known for his interior design work. “I’ve had a ball,” he said. “You don’t have to worry about what color someone’s living room is, and people are friendly and creative.” As for the National Stationery Show? The most interesting this for Bielec has been the people watching because you get to see all sorts of people from all different backgrounds. See Frank Bielec at booth #3324 on Monday. More than 600 people attended this year’s Opening Night Party — Party on the Battery. The sold-out event was held at Battery Gardens, featuring panoramic views of New York Harbor — including Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty. This sold-out event allows exhibitors and buyers to further network and build relationships off the Show floor. This year’s event brought together attendees and exhibitors from the National Stationery Show and Surtex. Frank Bielec shows off one of the products he designed for Paper So Pretty. Crane & Co. booth features hand-bordering demonstration NSS attendees were treated to a live hand-bordering demonstration at the Crane & Co. booth (#2702) Sunday. The company’s Sally Rice was on-hand demonstrating the skill she practices every day. In fact, Rice applies borders by hand for Crane & Co. on approximately 15,000 cards each day. The handpainted borders are offered on everything from cards, sheets, half sheets to folded notes. “Everybody’s got a favorite thing they like to do,” Rice said of the staff members who do hand-bordering for Crane & Co. “I like envelopes.” nss_day2_2010.indd 15 7/8/10 4:44 PM nss_day2_2010.indd 16 7/8/10 4:44 PM
