I am happy to say that our readership is growing exponentially. If any of your friends still do not know about the new home of Urban RacR, tell them to check out the website. UrbanRacR.co.za is updated regularly and it might even surprise them to see a photo or two of themselves or their cars in the online galleries of the events. To view our galleries, just click on the links in the respective articles. Looking back at Online Issue 3, RT mentioned we had just come out of one of the longest winters that Cape Town has experienced. Well, we had an equally long summer of constant 30+ degrees; where my four window aircon (LOL!) was seriously working overtime. I'm still recovering from the sunburn which was a direct result of being out and about in the sweltering heat to bring our readers the best action shots and articles possible. Our cover feature saw us standing cameras-in-hand on a mountain pass at 7am, waking the residents to the sound of Vtec (YOH!) with one of Cape Town's finest and possibly rarest normally-aspirated front wheel drives tearing up the tarmac. Cocking its inside rear wheel around bends; it kind of rubbed off on us and we naturally had to do the same as we left. We bring you the highlights of the Fast, Furious, and the glorious showdown at Killarney over the festive season, which unfortunately had to be halted due to the tragic passing of Cape Town's drag legend Ben Greyling. We also bring you the annually successful Lord of the Blings show hosted at Good Hope Centre and update you guys on the latest developments with regard to the 200m/400m drag racing fiasco... at least we have some good news. We also feature what was once a plain-Jane Suzuki GSXR1100 which has now been transformed into a one-in-a-million customised work of art. Before I end off, I would personally like to welcome Kevin Brown to the team as our Port Elizabeth event and features correspondent and photographer. So if you are from the windy city of Port Elizabeth and think you have a hot ride, we suggest you hook up with Kevin and maybe we can bring some fame to you and your ride. We look forward to your comments and suggestions after every issue so continue dropping us those mails. Forget the latest iteration in red or the street fighter champion edition in white. The original EK9 (our regular Civic Vtec shape model) boasts 182hp on the fly and a limited slip diff to see it to the ground, coupled to a sport suspension and is tinseled up with the obligatory red Recaro bucket seats. We never got this car, this bastion of eastern performance. Yet Zaki Hendricks has two. What gives? | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 6 w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a By now you've no doubt noticed the Namibian number plates on this, Zaki's race ready 'R resplendent with its similarly titled number. His is the real deal, or rather it was until its owner got bored with its standard performance and started to tune. Now it's even better. An HKS coilover kit with camber plates, a Spoon exhaust, Greddy management system and HKS whale penis for an exhaust upgrade are all the edge the Type R needs, enabling Zaki to achieve a 2.58minute time on his inaugural run at the latest and last King of the Mountain 5 months ago. That's 17th place amongst super cars and other beasties. With this setup the car has been good for a 14.6sec quarter mile. So is *Acceleration is Blistering... it any wonder that we've found a similar berg for him to play on for our shoot? Of course not. PIX P A G E 1 3 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 6 The sloping, banking bends of Red Hill are torture on any car with a lowered suspension. Despite its performance at Gydo pass, the Type R is punished here. "She's too low for this." Zaki's right. But that doesn't stop him from persevering. Acceleration is blistering in spite of the humble 1600cc that powers it. The Vtec system gives a stock 'tec the ability to play alongside cars with 2litre performance. Here it’s maniacally revving far beyond the 8000 mark. The rest of the time the frenzied engine can be | O N L I N E I S S U E 6 heard revving north of 8000. The result is breathtaking, accompanied occasionally by the sounds of semi slick rubber letting go but never succumbing to the impending loss of traction. Each corner is dispatched in exactly the same way. A three wheeled dance with the inside left hovering precariously in the air. Despite its tripod stance, traction is unhindered and the R pulls itself through as though it were on rails. A few bumps to the undercarriage is all the hardship we need endure, entirely resultant of the lower than factory Zaki has opted for. Combine that low stance with the capable motor and semi slick rubber on all fours and his maiden run at King of the Mountain makes a lot more sense. “Gydo's a lot smoother than this!” He is right, the uneven surface and many blind bends means it's an unlikely future course. Pity, it's so damned beautiful and with the right setup I think a lot could yet be extracted. Upon our arrival on top of the hill we find four blokes who have a similar passion for pedalling through the twistier stuff as we stumble upon a collection of cars as rare as you could hope. Behold a Renault Sport Spider, Porsche 911, Ferrari 348 and a freshly imported Mazda RX-7, FD! That settles it, this road is great, and our cover car the perfect whip to dispatch it in. w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a Touge, it means mountain pass. And it's here where the Type R comes alive. Back on the foot of the mountain and the sounds of stressed 1600cc engines no longer resonate through the air. Zaki's Type R ticks itself cool under a nearby tree, looking extremely desirable. It's for sale. And I've got to go count my pennies tonight. P A G E 1 7 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 6 w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a 200 METRES OR 400 METRES? WHAT'S THE DEAL? We at Urban RacR are calling it a fiasco. Not too long ago, as you read in Urban RacR Magazine Online Issue 5, we received press releases stating that MSA (Motorsport South Africa) had ruled that unless a drag strip was an “A Grade” Drag Strip, it would no longer be allowed to host sanctioned 400metre drag racing and for safety reasons, only 200metres. This upset many racers as well as spectators. Imagine the talk at the next car club hookup, “My stock standard 1800 managed a 9-second.” There is further confusion with “Street 2 Strip” events still being allowed to host 400metre drags. This has no bearing on the MSA decision as these are unofficial events which do not carry MSA affiliation and thus no MSA racing license is required. Street 2 Strip is for streetcars. Things were further confused at a recent MSA sanctioned event, hosted at Killarney, where 400m drags were permitted. The reasoning for this was that subsequent to the 200metre ruling, which strictly speaking meant that only Tarlton Raceway would be allowed to host 400metre drags, air strips upcountry were being allowed to host 400metre events. Killarney, upon hearing this, appealed the new ruling and a compromise was reached. I feel compelled to remind everyone that Killarney is not, and never was a purpose-built drag racing venue. It has however been able to P A G E 1 9 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 6 KILLARNEY Photography & Editorial: Waanie ’drags PIX update! accommodate drag racing on its main straight which is only 800metres long from starting line to catch nets. It was for this reason that 200metre drags was agreed to as it was deemed safer for drivers. Killarney management has viewed several alternatives, including reversing the strip which would not be viable as there are more safety issues such as the infamous “bump” which would then be in the braking area, as well as more open walls to hit. The current braking area is narrower than the rest of the strip which could pose a problem if a rear wheel drive car were to break traction and get tail-happy. Now for the good news... Killarney can cater for street cars without any major hassles and were successful is their appeal to have their 400m drag licence reinstated with some minor regulation changes. Firstly, and most importantly, NO PURPOSE-BUILT DRAG VEHICLES ARE ALLOWED!!! By this I mean no “funny cars” or dragsters. What is a streetcar, or once was a streetcar, can be entered. Currently Cape Town no longer has any purpose-built dragsters since the sad passing of a legend, Ben Greyling. Secondly, any car faster than a 10.99second quarter-mile, or deemed faster than a 10.99 second quarter-mile, MUST run solo. If there are any further incidents (God forbid) then things will be reevaluated and we could see the 200metre drags rule implemented permanently. It is up to us to make sure our cars are safe and we can control the power we get out of them. Basically, apart from the 10.99 rule, there are no real changes to drag racing in Cape Town and it once again makes sense to purchase your MSA License and Medical Cover, not forgetting to take out your WPMC membership which has its own advantages even if you are only a spectator. If you need more information in this regard check out the Western Province Motor Club's website on www.wpmc.co.za or just continue reading future issues of Urban RacR Magazine to stay informed. Well my friends, that it may very well be – but attach that 'average' 170Hp to something that weighs a little more than a fat friend of mine and we start to talk a different language… We all like to toss figures around, some of them much more absurd than others – hell, few people in the exciting world of tuning just talk plain k@k, but when you start talking about power to weight ratio and 0 – 160km/h sprint times of a bike… this is when the girls are separated from the men! This bike has similar power to a Honda Civic Vtec, yet it weighs approximately 1/6th as much! I have had the good fortune of driving and being driven in some pretty exotic and powerful machinery, "nice!" I hear you say? Initially it is a gradual, manageable wave of forward momentum, then you start PIX w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a *The new motor churned out a healthy 170Hp and 133Nm nearing the 6 500rpm mark and 'oh F$#@', now we're not playing any more. You're now chiming along at a hundred and twenty-plenty, in second gear, at 9 000rpm, front wheel off the ground and a full boot of 170Hp kicking you up the arse! This, my friends – is speed, not some stupid knob in his 90Hp, four wheeled, one ton car hitting 175km/h down the M5. Many men out there try their hand at putting their personal signature to a bike or car with absolutely catastrophic effects, when they're done you think to yourself – why the hell did they start if they couldn't finish? Here, with Dani's P A G E 2 5 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 6 absolutely pristine Custom GSX-R 1100 that is certainly not the case. This monster started off as a standard 1992 GSX-R 1100K and Dani bought it in 2005 with the idea of customizing an old bike for himself that would get him some attention. The customization took place in 2008 as Dani finally succumbed to the perilous disease of 'customization'. Dani and Motorcycle Mayhem have painstakingly taken the fairing and headlights from a 2008 Suzuki SV 1000 and miraculously morphed it on to the frame of the old GSX-R. Then, just to make sure the rear didn't look all left out, they went and mounted the tail from a Honda Fireblade… usually at this point I would w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a *Suzuki SV 1000 fairing and headlights + Honda Fireblade tail raise an eyebrow and say… “I'll believe it when I see it” and yes, I did look rather sheepish after being proved a faithless spanner. These guys must have measured, cut, pasted, measured again, cut again and pasted again and again until it all fitted like a glove. After they got all the bits to fit properly, the bits were carefully coated in a gorgeous black with glitter flaked clear coat leaving the new Custom looking absolutely pristine! Dani would like to improve the bike in the near future too – so keep a look out for this one of a kind blasting around Cape Town. | O N L I N E I S S U E 6 w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a PIX Lord of the bling 2008 ’ Photography: Sameer Parker & Rushdi Paleker R2K's Lord of the Blings Car Show is the highlight of the Cape Town After Market Car Scene every year and the 2008 edition was no exception. The main arena was crammed with as many cars as possible to give the crowd even more value for money. Ticket prices were certainly kept fair, and for anybody who hesitated to part with their cash to attend must please keep in mind that it was all for a worthy cause as part of the proceeds went to the Mary Harding School which needs donations to ensure the smooth running of the centre. Despite all the events taking place on the same weekend, including the King of the Mountain and the annual toy run, the show still drew a large crowd. Since its inception in 2002, this event has grown annually with new attractions being added. In 2002 it incorporated 400m drag, gymkhana, show ‘n shine, sound offs and vendors. In 2005, drifting was added to the list of attractions and 2006 saw the introduction of RC 1:10 drifting as well as drifting demonstrations of the full scale cars. 2008 saw a big crowd turnout to witness some of the up-country guys challenge some of our quickest dragsters down the main straight. Friday saw a special Street 2 Strip event, run through the day for the competitors not holding MSA licenses and followed up with VID P A G E 3 7 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 6 more drags on Saturday for the official runners. Strangely, this weekend was marred with “bad luck”. The vehicle in which Annie, Joel and the rest of the Speed and Sound team were travelling in, had hit a deer on the trip down, causing substantial damage. Even Joel’s race car which was being towed was rendered useless. They still completed the trip and graced us with their presence where they were warmly welcomed by the Cape Town guys. Good on you! On the Show ‘n Shine side, there were some seriously pimped out rides, ranging from your Old School cars right through to Super Custom. For those not willing to walk that extra bit to check out these super rides, they did a demonstration run down the track. Out on the main side of the track there was lots of drinking taking place with drums of 102 Octane (for those lucky few still able to get their hands on it), Avgas, Toluene and various other mixtures of highly combustible fuel being gulped down by those mean machines tearing up the drag strip. A cloud of w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a PIX tyre smoke hung steadily in the air at the launch area. A scary moment on the day was a run between Andre October in his TRD Toyota and Joburg driver Farhaad Ebrahim in his neat, Team Flawless Racing avis blue turbocharged e36 M3. Farhaad had gotten it sideways in either 2nd or 3rd gear and as per regulations, tapped off. But then P A G E 3 9 | U R B A N R A C R | once straight and back on the power, the BMW got badly out of shape and shot across onto the grass where it hit the wall and rolled (more bad luck). Farhaad got out of the car, shaken with a few minor bruises and was taken to the nearby hospital for a check up. On the oval side of the track, those stiffened-up hard-cornering race-bred machines O N L I N E I S S U E 6 were dodging the beacons on the gymkhana course, setting challenges for each other; while the drifters were left to steer looking through their side windows as smoke bellowed from those rears. The day generally went well with some impressive times being recorded. Then there was the final run of Ben Greyling in his V8 Monster Ford Fiesta. Ben was to use the gas and hopefully better his usual 10 seconds to officially back up his unrecorded 9 second pass. The run itself was astonishing. He managed to control the car well, clocking a scary speed of 238km/h and coming in at 9.87 seconds, becoming officially Cape Town’s fastest recorded time on four wheels. Ben will never know his time nor will he know that he did, in fact, achieve what had so long eluded him. Unfortunately after the run things went horribly wrong, and the Fiesta veered off course for reasons we do not know and will not assume. Ben was to retire after this race and emigrate, but sadly he was killed at age 58. RIP Oom Ben. You are fondly remembered. w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a dRIFT SKOOL WITH TAKUMI-SAN! ’lesson#1 THE WORLD’S DRIFT LEAGUES EXPLAINED We wanted to start off this month's drift features with a look at some of the big drift series around the world. After humble beginnings in Japan, the sport of drifting began to spread like a wildfire around the world starting in the early part of this decade. Now in 2009, there are full scale drift series happening on nearly every corner of the world. We will be doing some more in depth coverage of the different series later , but for now we will be using this as a "catalog" of sorts for the world's drift series. I guess there is no better place to start our drifting world tour than in Japan, the (rightfully) so-called birthplace of drifting. I mean JAPAN! (Wish I lived there,…Ebisu, Fukushima Prefecture to be exact, lol) P A G E 4 1 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 6 w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a D1 Grand Prix dRIFT SKOOL The longest running and most well known pro drift series in the world is Japan's D1 Grand Prix or D1GP. Started in the year 2000 as one of Japan's first competitive drift series, D1 experienced rapid growth and began to spread outside of Japan within a few years. After many events in the United States, D1 spread to places like the UK and Malaysia. For the past couple of years D1 has also hosted P A G E 4 3 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 6 world all star events at Irwindale Speedway in California, U.S of A. So far, these events have been the biggest gatherings of international drifters in the world. However, D1 recently scaled back its international operations to focus on the Japan series, but from this year, the U.S of A will host D1GP events again in the drift specific arena deemed the "DRIFT DOJO". w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a D1 Street Legal dRIFT SKOOL In 2005, as the cars of D1 became more and more extreme and the series was slowly losing its appeal to grassroots drivers, a new spinoff series called D1 Street Legal was introduced. D1 Street Legal (D1SL) has strict regulations on car modifications and the cars driven in the series must be legal for road use. Some D1SL events are held alongside normal D1 events and others are held at the smaller circuits that D1 no longer uses, such as Nikko Circuit and Dec Sekia P A G E 4 5 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 6 Hills to mention a few. In the beginning, works drivers such as Ken Nomura from Blitz/Uras and Naoto Suenaga from R.E Amemiya had street legal cars specifically built for this series to help it get up and running. They obviously competed in their favourite machines Nomura in his four door Nissan Skyline ER34 and Suenaga-san in his R.E Amemiya Wankel-powered Mazda FD3S.
