Friday 21 February p16 Time International interview Mast climbers North America’s largest construction show is chock-full of new products A www.khl.com A KHL Group Publication A KHL Group publication www.khl.com/ai ConExpo t the beginning of January, I was invited with a handful of other journalists to visit Terex Aerial Work Platforms’ manufacturing facility in Moses Lake, WA. While the company had a new bi-energy, hybrid scissor lift they were eager to unveil to the group, its real focus was the towering 180-foot SX-180 boom lift. Originally showcased at Bauma 2013 as a prototype, the SX-180 is now ready for the mainstream audience. And, at the time of our visit, the SX-180 was the world’s largest self-propelled telescopic boom. And, boy, is it ever big. We had the chance to take the boom to its maximum lifting height with Genie’s global marketing training manager Scott Owyen. Owyen, it should be noted, is not only a smooth operator but also an easy-to-talk to type of person. Before I could really grasp how high up we really were, we had reached all 180 feet without a blip or bop. “We’re here,” Owyen said. But, 180 feet is no longer the tallest telescopic, self-propelled bad boy that can grace a rental fleet. In the ever-evolving, “Who has a bigger…..” game, JLG Industries, Inc. invited those same journalists out to a secretive location to take the wraps off its brand new 185-foot boom. The 1850SJ trumps the SX-180 by 5 feet, but unfortunately – or, fortunately for some – we were unable to take a ride in the now-tallest-boom-lift-in-theworld as winds were whipping angrily that day. I have asked both companies if “this is it.” How much taller can we go without the aid of a truck to stabilize the machine? However, neither seemed to be flummoxed by the question. It wasn’t a matter of “if” they could, but “transportation regulations.” Both the SX-180 and 1850SJ are transportable without special oversize permits (“overweight” is another story). Going much taller than 185 or 190 feet would not only question the laws of physics, but also the size of the trailer. Does that mean either company isn’t already considering something larger? I’m really not sure. So, we have booms that tower more than 180 feet, but we also have North America’s largest telehandler being manufactured as I type this. Xtreme Manufacturing will unveil a 65,000-pound capacity telehandler at ConExpo, and let me tell you, it is one big machine. I had the chance to visit Xtreme’s manufacturing plant during World of Concrete 2014 where I got a sneak peek of the unit. The tires were at least 2 feet taller than me (all right, that might not be saying much, but … they’re huge) and the chassis alone made the smaller units on the production line look like toys. While I visited the company, a remark was made that as soon as Xtreme debuts its 65,000-pounder, another company will unveil an even bigger unit in the coming months. So, is there a cut-off? Is there a point when telehandlers become the new mining machines in terms of size and self-propelled booms reach the stars? At this rate, if the demand is there, I’d say I wouldn’t put it past them. Have a great ConExpo – and thanks for reading. rental Volume: Twenty One ■ Issue One ■ January-February 2014 INTERVIEW OFFICIAL NORTH AMERICAN MAGAZINE Production MARCH 2014 VOLUME 10 ■ ISSUE 2 A KHL G Group P Publication bli ti NEWS Editorial IRN reports on the dynamic power generation sector What ‘the Cloud’ can do for you p25 Vertical masts in 2014 Power test p46 Official magazine of the ERA Official magazine of IPAF ACCESS ■ TELEHANDLERS ■ SCAFFOLDING ■ BUSINESS ■ NEWS ■ PEOPLE INSIDE: CONEXPO PREVIEW, KEVIN APPLETON COLUMN, SPEEDY HIRE INTERVIEW ACCESS INTERNATIONAL : 30 YEARS AS THE INDUSTRY’S LEADING GLOBAL MAGAZINE F A L L P AR OKTHELC TS IPOENC/I HA AL RRNEEPSOS RE TS T H E R E N TA L REPORT YEARBOOK 20 2 201 013 3 2014 a comprehensive guide for buyers and users of access equipment A COMPREHENSIVE SUPPLIER International Awards for Powered Access LISTING AND GUIDE TO THE 2013 R E N TA L M A R K E T F R O M I N T E R N AT I O N A L R E N TA L N E W S published by price: US$80.00, €60.00, £50.00 <<CONTENTS THE RENTAL REPORT 1 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS CONFERENCE &AWARDS2014 Access, Lift & Handlers is published by KHL Group. Aimed to compete with popular telehandler products currently manufactured by Genie, JLG and Manitou and others, the Snorkel line will feature units in the 5,900-pound to 12,000-pound capacity range. The first series will be aimed toward the North American market and will come to the market in 2014, while a global series will hit the market in 2015. Specifications and other information are still being tweaked, but look to the March issue of ALH for more in-depth coverage. Visitors on the Xtreme/ Snorkel stand at ConExpo 2014, meanwhile, can expect a range of equipment from both manufacturers, including a new large-capacity telehandlers from Xtreme and new and updated or revamped Snorkel models. The 525-60 features a maximum lift height of 20 feet and a load capacity of 5,500 pounds. The 525-60 is 5 feet, 10 inches wide and 6 feet, 3 inches tall, allowing access to multi-story parking and operation in tight quarters. The 525-60 Hi-Viz replaces the 524-50, 527-55 and the 520-50 rearengined models, with a modern side-engine mount design. This permits a low boom pivot point for maximum stability and increased visibility to the rear and across the boom. Powered by a new Tier 4 Final, 2.5-litre, JCB Diesel by Kohler 4-cylinder engine, the 525-60 delivers 74hp (55kW). As with other JCB engines, there is no requirement for a diesel particulate filter or an SCR system to meet the Tier 4 Final emissions regulations. This means that the JCB machine has a service-free emissions control system, reducing operating costs and October 30-31 THE INTERNATIONAL CONSTRUCTION ECONOMIC FORUM (ICEF) London, UK www.icef.biz complexity for customers. A two-speed hydrostatic transmission offers travel speeds of up to 16 mph. Equipped with an 21 gpm hydraulic pump, the machine delivers auxiliary hydraulic power for a sideshift attachment carriage. Customers can choose between JCB’s Q-fit carriage or a universal skid steer compatible attachment interface for ultimate versatility and fleet acceptance. All boom functions are controlled by a single servo lever joystick, with proportional control of the two-stage boom extension allowing smooth operation and fine control for the operator. The machine is available with a choice of canopy or fully glazed cab, with the option of air conditioning. For more on the new telehandler – and ConExpo – see our guide on page 20. NESCO sold to Energy Capital Partners NESCO, one of the largest utility equipment rental businesses in the US, has been sold by Platinum Equity to another private equity firm, Energy Capital Partners, for an undisclosed sum. NESCO, which rents insulated aerial platforms and other utility equipment throughout the U.S., has been owned by Platinum for little over two years. During Platinum’s ownership NESCO made several significant acquisitions, including the 250 unit utility rental fleet of Penske Truck Leasing Co in 2012 and last year the more significant deal to acquire one of its largest competitors, Utility Equipment Leasing Corp (UELC). Energy Capital Partners has offices in Short Hills, New Jersey and San Diego, California, and is focused on investing in North America’s energy sector, with involvement in power transmission lines, oil and gas and power generation. Platinum might be exiting the utility equipment rental sector but it remains very engaged with the North American rental industry. In December it acquired Volvo Rents for $800 million and it also owns U.S. crane rental company Maxim Crane Works. 6 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS MARCH 2014 ALH 03 2014 NewsLA JG FINAL.indd 6 14/02/2014 09:24:49 NEWS Michel Denis, a former CEO of European truck rental group Fraikin, is the new president and CEO of Manitou Group. Xtreme launching 65k telehandler Xtreme Manufacturing will debut its largest-capacity telehandler at ConExpo 2014, Don Ahern, owner, told Access, Lift & Handlers during World of Concrete, Jan. 21-24 in Las Vegas. The 65,000-pound capacity telehandler will weigh 95,000 pounds and is aimed for work in bridges and pipehandling, Ahern said. On the other end of the spectrum, Xtreme will also debut its most compact telehandler, the XR5919, that features 5,900 pounds of capacity, 19 feet of lift height and 63 hp. The unit is being produced to compete with smaller telehandlers currently on the market. When both debut at ConExpo, Xtreme will round out its lineup to 15 models. It reveals that there were 53 fatalities worldwide in 2013 involving mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), also known as aerial work platforms (AWPs), according to preliminary results from IPAF’s accident database. The main causes of these fatalities were: overturn (16), fall from height (13), entrapment (10), electrocution (7), impact with MEWP (4) and falling object (2). In one case, the cause of the fatality was not known. Almost half of the number of reported fatalities (26 or 49 percent) involved mobile booms (3b). Fourteen fatalities (26 percent) involved mobile verticals (3a) and 11 (21 percent) involved static booms (1b). In two cases (4 percent), the type of machine involved was not known. Thirty (57 percent) of the fatalities occurred in the United States, whch is home of 54 percent of the world’s rental fleet. For more on the report, see our IPAF news pages in this issue. The improvement was primarily driven by increased fleet replacement in North America and Europe, said the company, as well as favorable pricing. Sales of access equipment, excluding U.S. military contract sales, rose 17.2 percent in the first quarter. “The increase in aerial work platform unit volumes in North America was due in part to the acceleration of some orders ahead of Tier 4 engine price increases,” added the spokesperson. MANITOU said its access equipment sales reached record levels in 2013 although lower sales of Gehl and Mustang skid steer loaders in North America dampened North American business. The access sales, together with an overall “marked increase” in orders from rental companies, helped the company’s rough terrain telehandler division grow by 9 percent to $292. 73 million (€215.2) in the final quarter of the year, although the division’s total revenues for 2013 were down 5 percent. The company does not split out the value of access equipment sales at its rough terrain tele division. UNITED RENTALS is forecasting revenue growth of between 12.5 percent and 17 percent this year on the basis that the bulk of the recovery in non-residential construction has still to come and that the rental sector is at the early stages of a multi-year growth cycle. The company posted a 6.2 percent increase in revenues for 2013 to $4.66 billion (compared to combined revenues for United and RSC in 2012). Net profits for the year were $387 million, up from $75 million in 2012. Fourth quarter revenues rose 7.1 percent to $1.34 billion, with net profits of $140 million, up from $41 million in 2012. The revenue increases result from a 6.9 percent rise in the volume of equipment on rent and a 4.2 percent average increase on rental rates. The deal will see IronPlanet take a minority shareholding in Mascus for an undisclosed amount. The deal will see the two sites integrated, allowing sellers on the Mascus site to pass items on to IronPlanet for auction. Buyers on the IronPlanet site meanwhile will have access to the equipment listed on Mascus. “I am excited to be working with Mascus and continuing to pioneer and revolutionise how sellers and buyers connect worldwide to satisfy the disposition and acquisition of used heavy equipment. JLG Industries and ProDelta to end RiRent joint venture JLG Industries and ProDelta – owner of Riwal – are closing their re-rental joint venture RiRent Europe when the current rental contracts run out, with no new customers being taken on. The companies said in a joint statement that market circumstances and positions of the two companies had changed from when the venture was created. The two have jointly owned RiRent for 15 years under a 50/50 ownership split. “After a longstanding relationship of more than 15 years of cooperation in the RiRent business, today’s market circumstances as well as the market position and operations of ProDelta and JLG have changed significantly requiring us to re-focus our business efforts,” said Karel Huijser, JLG Industries managing director and vice president for EAME, and Willem Ledeboer, CEO of ProDelta, in a joint statement. “JLG and ProDelta will continue to offer their services to their respective customer bases independently and we shall continue to collaborate as good business partners.” No further explanation of the closure was given. In Riwal’s case it is now operating throughout Europe and therefore competing with many of RiRent’s customers. ■ Ramirent is selling its aerial platform maintenance operation in Finland to specialist company RostokTekniikka (R-T). Under the deal R-T will maintain Ramirent’s aerial platform fleet in Finland, with 20 Ramirent staff switching employment to R-T. Based in Espoo, R-T sells and maintains aerial platforms and telehandlers, with a particular focus on Genie models. It employs 35 people and has projected revenues of around €14 million this year. In the capital expenditure figures released recently, the heavy construction segment of the Brazilian rental company is set to receive R$37 million, while the real estate segment will get R$25 millon bringing a total expenditure of R$231 million across the three business areas. This is in sharp contrast to last year’s projected capex figures released in January 2013. Then, access equipment and telehandlers were set to receive R$59.6 million during 2013, while real estate would take R$53.8 million and construction R$26million. Russian market expanded by 18 percent in 2013 The Russian equipment rental market grew by 18 percent in 2013 according to rental consultant and training organization RusRental. The consultant said the number of rental companies in the country is growing rapidly – there are now 4,000 companies in its rental directory compared to 1,000 in 2010 – and that rental companies had benefited from major infrastructure projects such as preparations for the Sochi Winter Olympics. Trends in the market include increased activity in the small tools and equipment sector and a move toward cooperation and alliances between small and medium sized rental companies. “As a result of the on-going market changes, small- and medium-sized Russian rental TCA supplies Baku Airport The New Delhi Police headquarters has a new look. UK’s HSE issues Genie Z-135/70 safety alert The UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a safety alert stating that all Genie Z-135/70 booms must be calibrated correctly and those that have not been should be removed from service. The advice comes during the HSE’s investigation into the collapse of a Z-135/70 belonging to Kimberly Access at one of its depots close to London, UK, in June last year. The operator died as a result of the incident. It follows a statement from the HSE in January, in which it confirmed it was currently basing its investigations on the calibration of the machine in question. “The emerging findings from the HSE indicate that the operational stability of a Z-135/70 may be compromised by the incorrect measurement of the boom angle sensors,” said the latest statement. It adds that the boom “became unstable and overturned whilst it was working at or very close to its maximum height. In order to minimize the risks of overturn, the machine safety devices and sensors must be configured as per manufacturer’s settings, as prescribed by the manufacturer in their Safety Bulletin 130005 dated July 29, 2013. “Any machines for which the required calibration checks have not been completed should be removed from service. Following the completion of checks, the machines should continue to be inspected, serviced and maintained as per the manufacturer’s requirements. “Work regarding the manufacturer’s safety notice should only be carried out in accordance with the recommendations in the machine service manual i.e. on firm level ground, with suitable environmental conditions etc. “Prior to any functional checks being undertaken by an operator using the platform controls, as part of the manufacturer’s listed inspections, calibration of the angle sensors should be confirmed from ground level using an inclinometer. The use of test weights might also be appropriate.” The ground level will be serviced by the FS320Z, while the FS290 wheel version is to be used to maintain the shopping and leisure The new terminal in Baku International Airport is designed to handle three million passengers annually, with passenger operations spread over two floors. areas on the first floor. “The Falcons were chosen due to the dual power system and the double jib,” said Brian Falck Schmidt, sales manager at TCA LIFT. “It was clear from the beginning that the double jib offers nothing but perfect access to the triangular shape of the building with its rounded edge and semitransparent roof.” ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS MARCH 2014 ALH 03 2014 International NewsLA FINAL.indd 16 14/02/2014 09:28:45 It’s what’s inside that counts. www.tvh.com | www.irmn.com | (800) 255-4109 TVH is the worldwide leading supplier of quality replacement parts and accessories for the material handling and industrial equipment industry. Lindsey Anderson reports. S teve Laganas, co-founder and treasurer of Able Equipment, doesn’t shy away from the fact that Able started out as a rigging company. In 1986, the company was involved with New York construction and industrial markets and provided rigging services to customers. Able had been called upon to dismantle a tower that was being used to test radar for a local company, but it needed equipment beyond its scope – it needed access equipment. “We decided at that point that we wanted to venture into new opportunities,” Laganas says. “That’s how we go started with the aerial division. When we were hired to dismantle that tower, we needed aerial lifts and that’s how we got started with the knowledge of the aerial side of business. We sought out suppliers, started to buy equipment and rent it out to our customers and then looked for new opportunities and customers.” The company originally started with Condor lifts and then quickly added JLG and Genie units. “We saw the writing on the wall,” Laganas says of the aerial industry. After a typical winter storm, Able’s yard is pictured here covered in snow. In 2013, Able invested in $13 million worth of equipment and the company says it expects to do at least $6.5 million of capex this year, with 80 percent of that $6.5 million going toward aerial equipment. Able currently has two Genie 180-foot booms on order and they are looking to purchase two to three more 150-foot booms. “We’re top heavy on the heavier iron more so than the smaller iron when it comes to aerials,” Laganas says. “However, we will purchase more 20-foot, 26-foot and 32-foot scissor units as well as some more rough terrains from Genie, as well.” While Able doesn’t have specific jobs that are requiring the tall booms, Laganas says the big units will be used for bridge work in the New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia areas. “We anticipate having those units in work on that type of construction,” he says. It’s obvious Able is experiencing growth – not just refleeting. The company had a 35 percent increase in rental revenues from 2012 to 2013 and while they remain somewhat humble about 2014’s expectations, Laganas notes a new location will help the company extend its reach. “We don’t really know what to expect for 2014 but we are opening up in a new market and we’re looking forward to work in Philly,” he says. “While we experienced an increase in market share, that was predominantly in New York, and maybe a little in New Jersey. I like to try and be modest about the growth we’ll see in 2014. We are anticipating a 20 percent increase in rental revenues.” Able has a number of ReachMaster lifts, including these two FS138 and FS121s. 18 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS MARCH 2014 ALH 03 2014 Interview ABLELA FINAL.indd 18 14/02/2014 09:30:33 INTERVIEW Able at a glance While the rental company has a number of boom and scissor lifts, it also has a growing ‘nice’ section of equipment. In January of 2013, the company saw a 43 percent jump over the same period year before, which Laganas attributes to the work left behind in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The company already has a lease signed in Pennsauken, NJ which is just outside of Philadelphia. The location will serve the Philly markets. Despite the regional expansion, Able has no plans to reach further into other areas of the U.S. “We’re expecting an increase in business due to grabbing market share from a variety of the other companies that provide certain services,” Laganas says. “It’s the increase in the amount of projects we see on the board. It’s grabbing market share and also having a robust year for construction in New York.” Laganas says work in the Hudson Yards – New York’s second-largest privately funded construction project outside of Rockefeller Center years ago– will be one of the company’s bigger projects to supply equipment, but that bridge and general construction work is what keeps Able at the top. “Our rental rates are up over last year,” he says. “The most we were down in total rental rates was 12 percent, which was very good Far right: Steve Laganas, co-founder of Able. t probably b bl mostt off the th other th rental t l comparedd to companies being down closer to 30 percent. We were able to maintain most of our business and while rental rates were affected, we anticipate being able to raise our rates in 2014 a couple percentage points.” Laganas attributes the semi-steady business during the downturn to its focus on service. “The way we’re growing is because of our level of service,” he says. “New York rebounds a lot quicker than a lot of other places. We’re the last to fall and the first to rise.” Outlook For the coming year, Able will continue to monitor growing sectors, including the telehandler market, which the company saw a rebound in rentals for in 2013. “We have stepped into higher capacities,” he says. “We have a 12,000-pound unit and a 20,000-pound unit, as well. The norm for this k t was always l 10 000 pounds, d bbutt we’ve ’ market 10,000 increased capacities for some of our larger projects and for the material handling needs of our customers.” Able, which has 773 aerials in its fleet consisting of booms and scissor, says its success is in thanks to relationships. “We try to build relationships with customers,” Laganas says. “Independents have an advantage in markets like New York mainly because we’re way more nimble than the larger companies. Anybody who wants to speak to either myself or anybody else that makes decisions can get us at any time and at any moment’s notice. New York is definitely different than other parts of the county in respect to response time. We respond quicker. We have great repair capabilities. We respond to deliveries fast. MARCH 2014 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS ALH 03 2014 ConExpo Guide LA FINAL.indd 23 23 14/02/2014 14:13:14 CONEXPO GUIDE JCB (G-1559) plans to unveil a new compact telehandler model at ConExpo 2014 to fleshout to its Hi-Viz Loadall range for construction applications. The 525-60 features a maximum lift height of 20 feet and a load capacity of 5,500 pounds. The 525-60 is 5 feet, 10 inches wide and 6 feet, 3 inches tall, allowing access to multi-story parking and operation in tight quarters. The 52560 Hi-Viz replaces the 524-50, 527-55 and the 520-50 rear-engine models, with a modern side-engine mount design. This permits a low boom pivot point for maximum stability and increased visibility to the rear and across the the unit's boom structure. Powered by a new Tier 4 Final, 2.5-litre, JCB Diesel by Kohler 4-cylinder engine, the 52560 delivers 74hp (55kW). As with other JCB engines, there is no requirement for a diesel particulate filter or an SCR system to meet the Tier 4 Final emissions regulations. This means that the JCB machine has a service-free emissions control system, reducing operating costs and complexity for customers. All boom functions are controlled by a single JLG’s 450AJ has an elevated platform height of 45 feet and platform capacity of 500 pounds. JCB will debut a new telehandler at ConExpo, the 525-60. servo lever joystick, with proportional control of the two-stage boom extension allowing smooth operation and fine control for the operator. The machine is available with a choice of canopy or fully glazed cab, with the option of air conditioning. Serviceability is much improved with the side-mounted engine installation and, depending on territory, the machine can be supplied with JCB’s LiveLink telematic monitoring system for maximum fleet visibility and maintenance control. Options include full road light kits and screen guards for harsh working environments. JLG INDUSTRIES, INC. (G-1037) will debut the world’s largest self-propelled boom lift, the 191-foot working height 1850SJ Ultra boom. The 1850SJ has a platform height of 185 feet and features 80 feet of horizontal outreach. The telescopic boom lift relies on a five-section boom and a telescopic jib to provide operators with unprecedented access in a variety of applications that require high-reach versatility. The 1850SJ features an all-new chassis, which, with the help of hydraulics and protected cylinders on each axle, can be extended to provide stability on the jobsite or retracted in one minute to narrow width for transporting on the highway with only an over-weight permit. When fully extended, the width of the chassis expands from 8 feet, 2 inches to 16 feet, 6.5 inches. Three steering modes enhance the maneuverability of this big boom, similar to the other Ultra Booms from JLG. JLG will also introduce the new H340AJ hybrid boom – the industry’s first true hybrid boom. The H340AJ hybrid boom lift combines an environmentally friendly diesel engine with a 48-volt electric power system. Designed to do everything a diesel machine does, the H340AJ meets customer demand for a lift that uses less fuel, generates less noise (less than 69 decibels), and is environmentally friendly. Direct AC electric drive reduces the number of hydraulic hoses and fittings as well as the potential for leaks. Battery-only operation allows the H340AJ to be used indoors and in other emissions-free areas. The H340AJ features a platform height of 34 feet, a 17-foot up-andover reach, and a platform capacity of 500 pounds. With steel hoods to increase durability, the H340AJ is ideal for general contractors, facility managers, painters, and electrical contractors, among others. The company will also introduce a new member to its LiftPod family, the FT140. MANITOU NORTH AMERICA (N-12605) will show the MHT 10225 telescopic handler with a 49,500-pound maximum capacity. The MHT is designed for applications requiring heavier lift capacity such as mining, quarries, heavy bridge construction or steel erection. The MHT 10225 is powered by a 175 hp Tier III Mercedes turbo diesel engine and is equipped with a two speed hydrostatic transmission for maneuverability and ease of operation. The manufacturer says it has excellent drawbar pull equating to good rough terrain performance. A high output load sensing hydraulic system capable of performing three simultaneous movements with no loss of speed. MEC AERIAL WORK PLATFORMS (S-6148) will introduce a 60-foot rough terrain scissor to compete with European-produced models. The MEC 6092RT is the largest scissor to be manufactured in North America and joins the MEC ‘92’ Ultra-Deck rough terrain scissor lift series. It is based on the existing MEC 5492RT, which up until now has been North America’s tallest production scissor lift. “The 6092RT takes large platform scissor lifts to heights that have been designated only for boom lifts, in the North American market,” says a company spokesman. The MEC 6092RT comes equipped with 24.6foot Ultra-Deck platform with dual slide decks, a turbo charged diesel Kubota engine, MEC’s exclusive Quad-Trax full time 4-wheel drive, oscillating axle, automatic levelling outriggers and engine slide out module. “The justification behind the 6092RT is to address the highly priced European competitive models,” says Jim Tolle MEC director of MARCH 2014 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS ALH 03 2014 ConExpo Guide LA FINAL.indd 27 27 14/02/2014 14:14:05 CONEXPO GUIDE international markets. “We have recognized a large gap in the large deck European scissor lift product range versus the large deck North American product range. You go from the aggressively priced North American made scissor lift, which up until now, has been limited by height to the highly priced European made scissor lift. Until now the few meters of increased height would cost the customer a 50-100 percent premium over a North American made machine.” Tolle adds that the idea is not to displace ‘European-style’ large deck scissors lift, but to offer a lower cost alternative with return on investment being a major consideration. “For our North American customers the 6092RT takes the operator to a 6 story level that up until now has been deemed a boom lift category with small compact platforms,” Tolle says. “Our customers have already made commitments to pre-product units, as a result of our second quarter 2014 production date limiting the amount produced we plan to sell out of this new model early in 2014.” OMMELIFT (G-2048) will display its 2750 RXBDJ tracked platform. Its rubber-tracked undercarriage, coupled with Kubota diesel engine, allows the lifts to traverse soft muddy terrain, hilly lawns and delicate indoor surfaces of all types with ease and without any impact, the company says. Battery power, rechargeable from either mains or by the diesel engine generator, offers clean and pollution-free use indoors and greatly increases fuel efficiency of the diesel engine by being a true Hybrid system. Compact dimensions allow access through tight passages, while variable spread outriggers and deployment ability on slopes up to 22 degrees assure that a safe work configuration always can be found. PILOSIO (S-6848) will show its MP multidirectional scaffolding system that utilizes tube and joint scaffolding products. A special washer welded to the vertical uprights offers four orthogonal fastenings for stringers and it has an additional four slotted holes that allow fastening using variable angles over almost 360 degrees. In addition the hooking system Ommelift’s tracked platform 2750 RXBDJ. with wedge and washer is easy to lock and very quick during assembly and disassembly. The MP can be used as facade scaffolding for maintenance and a wide range of other applications. The Genie SX-180 boom, which is now in production, is an “engineering spectacle,” the company says. It has a platform height of 180 feet and can be driven at full height. The stowed length shrinks it down to 47 feet and the retracted width to 98 inches making it transportable without special over-width permits. The lift capacity is 750 pounds with a maximum of two people in the basket. The boom is suited for applications in the oil and gas industries, commercial construction, industrial construction and maintenance, wind farm applications, power stations and utilities and large metropolitan and urban cities that require work at height. The new Genie GS-4069 bi-energy hybrid scissor lift will also be on display. The Genie BE69 series includes three models: the 26-foot GS-2669, 33-foot GS-3369 and the 40-foot GS-4069. The units have an on-board integrated generator that charges the unit’s batteries and also supplies power to the platform and scissor’s chassis. All of the BE models are driveable at full height. 32 The 3-4-5 link stack design provides commonality across the entire range, the company says, and the units feature a 5-foot slide-out deck. “The new Genie hybrid scissor lift is a best in-class series that provides users with a true ‘start to finish’ machine,” says Mark Powell, scissors product manager, Terex Aerial Work Platforms (AWP). “In the early stages of construction, the scissor keeps itself charged and can supply full AC power when onsite power is not available. As the jobsite progresses it can switch to hybrid or electric to meet rough terrain or indoor slab environments. This type of versatility ultimately leads to higher utilization for rental companies.” As the name implies, the scissor lift series features two operating modes. This selectable feature meets the needs of both outdoor jobsites with no onsite power, and indoor jobsites with sensitive noise and emission environments. When the power management hybrid operation is selected, the system automates the charging function of the integrated generator, maintaining the battery charge. All models are also equipped with an onboard charger for wall power charging. The series’ AC sealed electric drive motors provide full performance in both operating modes. The units feature a front active-oscillating axle, non-marking, foam-filled tires and full swing-out trays for easier access to electronics, hydraulics and batteries. All models will be available globally in the second quarter of 2014. TEUPEN (S-4581) has new North American nomenclature for its LEO series. The company will show its LEO21GT and introduce a new nomenclature for its LEO series to better suit the North American market. For example, the new 21m model, introduced as LEO21GT in Europe, will be named TL63A, which equates to: tracked Lift – 63-foot platform height – articulated. The new model features an outreach of 39 feet at a 551 pound basket load in the entire working area along with a stabilizing system which allows setting up the lift on slopes of up to 30 percent. Along with the new TL63A, Teupen will also introduce the 2014 version of existing models of the LEO series, now also re-branded under the new naming system. XTREME MANUFACTURING (S-4224) will debut its largest-capacity telehandler, Don Ahern, owner, told Access, Lift & Handlers. The 65,000-pound capacity telehandler will weigh 95,000 pounds and is aimed for work in bridges and pipe-handling, Ahern said. On the other end of the spectrum, Xtreme will also debut its most compact telehandler, the XR5919, that features 5,900 pounds of capacity, 19 feet of lift height and 63 hp. The unit is being produced to compete with smaller telehandlers currently on the market. When both debut at ConExpo, Xtreme will round out its lineup to 15 models, from compact to large. “The forks on the new unit weigh 2,000 pounds each,” Ahern told ALH. But visitors to Xtreme’s stand should expect much more than telehandlers. Ahern told ALH exclusively that those expecting only telehandlers will be surprised to see a completely new series of aerial work platforms featuring never-before-seen technology. ■ A group of onlookers watch as the Xtreme 65,000-pound telehandler’s engine gets lowered into the machine. The new SJ6832 RTE electric rough-terrain scissor lift allows users to “easily switch between indoor and outdoor use while its emission-free operation makes it well-suited to projects, regions or countries where machinery pollution restrictions are in place,” Skyjack says. To simplify operator and service training, the SJ6832 RTE was built on the same chassis as the existing diesel and dual fuel SJ6832 RT units. This decision allows those already familiar with the highly popular traditionally-powered SJ6832 RT lifts to experience a “seamless transition” to the electrically powered unit. These battery-driven lifts will be highlighting green technology and eliminate the need for diesel powered units. Snorkel Snorkel debuted a number of new and ANSIcertified products on the first day of The Rental Show, March 9-12 in Orlando. Equipment included a compact, mini scissor, the nowANSI-certified S3970RT which was previewed at Bauma and the EZ Loader series of delivery trucks for North America. The 10-foot-platform-height, 30-inch-wide S3010E was first shown at Bauma but is now ANSI certified for the North American market. Talking to ALH at the show, the company says the mini scissor stems from interest in Europe for the Pop-Up product line, but with a need for a driveable option. The S3010E has a “high amp/ hour rating for an extended operating period between battery charges,” Snorkel says. With a gross weight of 1,091 pounds (495kg), it is still lightweight enough for many floors with load-bearing restrictions. The machine is able to pass through standard interior doorways. It can be driven at full height and has a skid steer system for a zero inside turning radius. The unit also features two caster wheels with two traditional powered wheels. It is the smallest Snorkel offering. Snorkel also launched the EZ Loader series Custom Equipment of delivery trucks for North America. Drawing on decades of equipment transport experience, these truck beds are specifically designed for transporting lifting equipment. The hydraulic ramp deploys in 17 seconds, enabling fast and efficient loading and unloading. Its ARA booth features the EZ18, with a payload of 18,000 pounds, a 10,000-pound-capacity dove tail lift The company filled the first order for its new HB-1230 scissor lifts late last fall. American Scissor Lift, Stockton, CA, an independent dealer that rents, sells, and services scissor lifts, boom lifts, and telehandlers, purchased the first 27 units and will receive them before the end of 2013. Custom Equipment introduced a prototype of the HB-1230 lift in 2013 and American Scissor Lift was among the first companies to test it. The new HB-1230s will join 62 HB-1030 lifts already working in American Scissor Lift’s fleet. Skyjack finds its oldest working scissor Skyjack announced the winner of its Quest2013 at The Rental Show 2014. Quest2013 aimed to find the oldest working machine produced in the manufacturer’s 30 year history. The year-long search was launched at last year’s Rental Show in Las Vegas and took in most regions of the world, including South America and Asia. Finally the oldest surviving machine, a SJ006-10, was tracked down in Skyjack’s home country of Canada. Kraner Electrical, a Guelph, Ontario-based company, which provides electrical maintenance and installation for heavy industries, purchased the used SJ006-10 at Bolton Auction House in May 1996. But the machine, with a serial number of 00E, dates back to 1985. Skyjack awarded Kramer with its prize of a new 19-foot working height SJIII 3219 scissor at this year’s Rental Show in Orlando. The 29-year-old SJ006-10 is generally used for installing conduit or fixtures, running pipes or hooking up equipment for Kraner Electrical customers. “When we are running electricals up near the ceiling we need wide spaces and the Skyjack gives us lots of space while providing a steady platform,” says Mathew Kraner, who co-owns the company with his father Peter. “It’s like a work van up in the sky because it fits all our tools, pipes, fittings and the radio.” The SJ006-10 has a 21 foot working height, a capacity of 750 pounds and a platform size of 40 inches by 82 inches. “Everyone laughs at how slow it is because you can walk faster than it but it’s a very effective tool and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. After all, slow and steady wins the race,” says Kraner. The manufacturer also announced the sale of its 100,000th SJIII 3219 unit to Chicago-based Metrolift. The company has a fleet of 1,800 machines, with 1,000 of them being Skyjack scissors. MARCH 2014 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS ALH 03-2014 Scissors LA FINAL.indd 37 37 17/02/2014 09:29:37 SCISSOR LIFTS “Our customers use our Hy-Brid Lifts for everything from electrical to drywall to plumbing,” says Mike Melthratter, president of American Scissor Lift. With an HB-1230 lift, contractors can work on projects like electrical, plumbing, drywall and sprinkler systems at platform heights to 12 Terex AWP’s new bi-energy unit at The Rental Show 2014. 38 feet. The lift can hold two people and up to 500 pounds on its platform, which is 30 inches wide, 55 inches long and features extensions that add nearly 29 inches of length. The compact units let contractors easily navigate through busy jobsites, while the extensions give ample working area for tools and supplies. The lifts also feature zero-turn radii for exceptional maneuverability around tight corners and through doorways. The HB-1230’s dual front wheels help distribute the machine’s weight for lower wheel loads that let the unit work on delicate flooring, including tile, laminate, raised floors, and mezzanines, with much lower potential for damage. Users also can get onto poured concrete several days sooner with an HB-1230 than with heavier competitive models. In addition, the counter-rotating wheels reduce friction so users can maneuver over tile or carpeting without marking or tearing. To ensure a clean system for operating indoors in both finished and unfinished environments, the HB-1230’s hydraulic system is selfcontained with only two connection points. That reduces the potential for hydraulic fluid leaks, which could lead to floor damage and potential safety hazards. Custom Equipment uses optimal grade steel. Because the steel is stronger, less material is required and the lifts weigh less. In addition, the process identifies stress points so Custom can reinforce them without adding a lot of unnecessary weight. The scissor stacks on the HB-1230 also offers more stability than the traditional post design of mast lifts. The proportional drive and lift systems on Hy-Brid Lifts give users greater control. They can adjust how fast the lifts travel and the rate at which they raise or lower the platforms. While the platforms are operated up and down by hydraulics, two 12-volt, deep-cycle batteries power the electrical drive and steering systems. Since the systems are electrical rather than hydraulic, they draw fewer amps and require less overall power. Electric drive and steering is standard for the HB-1230, but is not available in other manufacturers’ lifts, the company says. Low weight plus the electric drive and steering allow the battery power to last up to twice as long, or as much as 10-16 hours. The two absorbent glass mat (AGM) batteries make an HB-1230 lift virtually maintenance free because they never require users to add water. The HB-1230 also features an on-board battery charger that self monitors the current and stops it once the batteries are fully charged. This provides a distinct advantage over nonmonitoring systems that continue to feed current into the batteries after they are fully charged, ■ says Custom Equipment. Lindsey Anderson spoke to manufacturers about their latest equipment and where these aerials are working in the field. T hey’re compact, portable and can wedge into spaces where traditional booms and scissors might not be able to. Vertical mast machines are popular for construction as well as maintenance in finished spaces. As the units gain traction in certain sectors across North America – schools, churches, warehouse facilities and more – users are finding their ease of transport, maneuverability and setup extremely valuable. “Vertical mast machines usually have a small footprint which allows access into tight and confined spaces that large products cannot get into,” says Marie Engstrom, associate product manager for Terex Aerial Work Platforms. “For example, a Genie Runabout (GR) product is compact enough to fit in many elevators and lightweight so it does not exceed most elevator capacities. Given the size and transportability, vertical mast machines are surprisingly versatile.” Terex AWP most recently introduced its GR-26J to North America. The unit features a narrow chassis and jib that allow the machine to be positioned in tight areas while still allowing it to access areas that might be “up and over.” “Having a compact base is key for vertical mast products which are frequently used indoors and in finished spaces,” Engstrom says. “The comparatively low machine weight is important when using the GR-J products in areas that have floor loading limitations.” 40 Another trend in vertical mast machines, Engstrom says, is to increase access by adding outreach as well as those popular up-and-over capabilities. The Genie GR-26J accomplishes this by adding outreach with jib of approximately 8 feet in length and up-and-over capabilities of nearly 22 feet. “The key benefit here is allowing access to areas that were previously unreachable by combining outreach and up and over capabilities with a compact and maneuverable chassis,” Engstrom says. “This allows work to be completed over manufacturing lines, in facilities with shelving and racking, as well as areas with narrow aisle ways.” Genie Runabout products are used for general construction and are requested by electricians and other tradespeople for detailed work, the company says. “In addition, the Genie QuickStock products help with increasing productivity in warehousing and stockpicking with their easy maneuverability and platform trays for boxes and parts,” Engstrom says. The GR family also has specific uses in finished spaces, due to the small chassis size. The zero degree turning radius allows easy maneuverability in finished offices and retail buildings and is commonly requested in hospitals. “The GRC is a more robust machine, popular for rugged construction environments,” Engstrom says. Rental companies might find interest in vertical mast products for several reasons, Engstrom says. “First, they are a safe alternative to a ladders and allow rental companies to help meet customers access needs with simple, easy to use machines,” Engstrom notes. “Second, vertical mast products are great entry level machines for customers unfamiliar with aerial products and they can be rented for a reasonable price. Vertical mast products help users see the value that a complete line of aerial machines can provide. They can be a stepping stone to larger machines that provide A Skyjack SJ 16 vertical mast machine. JLG has upgraded its T32E Toucan mast boom lift with a “ground-up” redesign. The unit is now designed with 80 percent fewer hoses and fittings than its predecessor, thus allowing the T32E less maintenance and fewer leak points. The T32E also includes a direct electric drive instead of a hydraulic drive, for more efficient use. Duty cycles are improved, allowing for greater operator productivity. The Toucan series delivers greater access in a multitude of ways, according to Jeff Frod, JLG global product director. The unit features a highly responsive and durable mast design that requires less time for set up. It also moves easier, with a tight turning radius that maneuvers more easily in narrow aisles and confined spaces, he says. “And it services easier, with quick access to major system components.” One of the biggest innovations in the vertical mast line for JLG has been the company’s move to offer direct brushless AC electric drive. “Two major advantages are nearly 80 percent reduction in the number of hoses on the machines, and about a third of the hydraulic fluid, from about 45 liters to 15 liters,” says Ford. “This is significant from an environmental standpoint and a leak standpoint.” Trends and updates Increasing platform height is a recent trend, according to Paul Kreutzwiser, Skyjack senior product manager. Skyjack will be unveiling a new machine at ConExpo, but Kreutzwiser was keen to keep quiet. “I realize many journalists and customers are eager to learn more right now, but we are holding off sharing any details about the new lift until the launch at ConExpo.” According to Kreutzwiser, all kinds of trades and maintenance personnel use vertical mast machines and they can typically be found in multi-story buildings during all phases of construction and even in completed buildings. The various applications include HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler technicians, drywallers (plaster), painters, electricians and maintenance personnel. “The 12-foot platform height was the staple in the class for some time but the 16-foot lift has gained traction in all markets giving the end user a working height up to 21 feet, offering a very versatile access solution,” Kreutzwiser says. “Extra height and versatility on the job is one reason for this tread, another driver is that rental companies can use a machine like this to backfill for the more popular small, narrow scissors like the 15-foot and 19-foot lifts.” Skyjack’s SJ12, with a platform height of 12 feet and weight of 1,720 pounds, and the SJ16, that has a platform height of almost 16 feet and weight of 2,130 pounds, provide users with the most flexibility in a compact design, Kreutzwiser says. The SJ12 and the SJ16 both have a zero inside turning radius, a 20-inch traversing platform for extended reach, a sliding access panel that allows for easy access to all components and a capacity up to 500 pounds. To ease maintenance issues, Kreutzwiser notes, both vertical mast lift machines are built using Skyjack’s standard color-coded and numbered wiring system. JLG will unveil this new Toucan unit at ConExpo. Snorkel story While Snorkel has no immediate plans to add to its vertical mast line, it says compactness and reach were also on its mind when it enhanced its M1230E mast with a roll-out deck extension. This optional extra provides additional reach without the need to move the machine. Recently, contractors at a new shopping mall invested in a Snorkel vertical mast lift to provide safe and efficient working at height. AiroControl is installing ventilation systems at the $140 million Kings Avenue Mall in Cyprus. The company required a light weight aerial lift with a 19 foot, 8 inch platform height and the solution was a Snorkel SPM20 self-propelled mast lift. The Snorkel SPM20 is a narrow, self-propelled mast lift that is ideal for use in warehouses, offices, retail and other facilities maintenance applications. This lightweight machine is designed to be easy-to-use for one person and has a safe working load of 330 pounds. The entire unit is less than 30 inches wide. Furthermore, Snorkel says, the SPM20’s skid steer provides a zero inside turning radius, making it ideal for indoor work in confined spaces. Completely electrically-powered, the SPM20 is quiet, clean, environmentally friendly and has very low running costs. Kings Avenue is a new landmark mall in Paphos, a coastal city about 31 mileswest of Limassol, the largest port in Cyprus. The 1.1 million square foot complex houses 115 shops, banks, leisure facilities and restaurants, with 1,250 underground parking spaces. The mall contractor purchased the machine from Snorkel’s long-standing distributor in Cyprus, Mak Atermonas. Marios Kyriacou, Technical Director of Mak Atermonas, said: “We are delighted to supply a JLG’s FS60 LiftPod aerial work platform. Nonmarking front tires and rear castors are fitted as standard. Lift and drive functions are operated by a simple one-hand joystick. The SPM20 can be driven at full height and can traverse gradients of up to 25 percent. The 24V battery pack is sealed for life, requiring no maintenance. The SPM20 also has simple, easy to use diagnostics on the chassis, for fast and efficient troubleshooting, the company says. Optional extras include a platform extension and flashing amber beacon. Even smaller Founded in 1882, the city of Montrose, CO once provided supplies to nearby mining communities. Today, the self-proclaimed gateway to the wonders of Western Colorado is the recipient of the 2013 All-America City award from the National Civic League, having demonstrated “…innovation, inclusiveness, civic engagement and cross-sector collaboration by describing successful efforts to address pressing local challenges.” Among the more pressing and recent challenges not cited or considered for the award, but nevertheless important to the city’s police department, involved access to the department’s secure evidence storage. Recently, the police department consolidated its evidence storage A Genie GR-26J in warehouse duties. 42 Two Terex AWP Genie GR-20 vertical masts perform ceiling maintenance. into a single location – a renovated historic building originally constructed in 1910 as a fire station. “The goal was to move everything to one secure location where evidence could be carefully organized, filed and stored, but also be easy for authorized personnel to find and retrieve when they need it,” says Virgil Turner, director of innovation and citizen engagement for the city of Montrose. Turner’s job description includes responsibility for city facilities, including the renovated fire station, which is adjacent to city hall. According to Turner, evidence storage is much like a warehouse operation in that it requires significant amounts of shelving. “Shelves are labeled, as are the bins of evidence stored on them, with each bin carefully assigned a particular location on a specific shelf within the storage area.” Although floor space in the converted fire station is limited, the building’s high ceilings, ranging from 12 to 14 feet, provide plenty of vertical storage for the police department. Taking advantage of this feature, Turner incorporated a high-density mobile storage system to maximize storage space while accommodating the police department’s preponderance of evidence. A mobile storage system replaces static shelves and fixed aisles with shelves mounted on wheels that can be compressed together, eliminating all but one aisle that opens up when and where it is needed by shifting rows of shelving. But conserving floor space by taking advantage of higher ceilings and a tall storage system created the need for a safe means of storing and accessing evidence stored on the system’s upper shelves. “We were also somewhat constrained by the width of an existing doorway between a load-bearing masonry partition,” says Turner. “We really didn’t want to cut a wider opening if we didn’t have to. Also, once you go through the opening, you have to make an immediate right-hand turn to get into another storage area, which limited the options available to us.” Turner and his team briefly considered the use of rolling ladders, but found they took up too much floor space, required more room to maneuver than was available, and were too wide to fit through the doorway or make the turn on the other side of the opening. “We certainly looked at traditional ladders,” he says. “But from a safety standpoint, they bring with them a considerable amount of risk, and they would be difficult to use. Our evidence custodian could not carry large ladders around the storage area, and we did not want to risk injury as she tried to maneuver them around tight corners. Plus, safely climbing a ladder requires three points of contact on the ladder, leaving no way to carry large boxes up or down the ladder. “So, we knew almost immediately that we would need a lift of some sort. But it wasn’t that simple, because we had a budget constraint. This was not something we thought we would need when original plans for the storage area were considered. So I began looking for a safe, efficient and affordable solution to our accessibility challenge.” Turner’s search eventually led him to the FS60 LiftPod aerial work platform from JLG. With a 12-foot working height and a compact 30-inch base, the personal and portable lift offered Turner the dimensions and the maneuverability he needed. “The LiftPod takes up much less floor space than any other option we considered and fits through the doorway, easily making the turn into the storage area,” says Turner. “With the LiftPod, our evidence custodian is able to place a box on the material shelf and then step into the lift and know that she is in a secure cage, which lifts her to the point where she needs to be to safely unload the box or retrieve another.” The platform holds up to 330 pounds, while the enclosed basket provides the ability to work 360 degrees with both hands. Vertical mast machines will continue to evolve to provide safe, effective replacements for ladders at both high and low heights, most agree. It will be interesting to watch this segment continue to find new and innovative ways to do this with smaller chassis and lighter weight units which are even easier ■ to transport. Fred Wehmeyer, senior vice president of engineering at U.S. Battery Manufacturing, discusses the facts on which battery maintenance technique can actually lower your fleet’s annual operating costs Manual vs. automated W ith increased competition, along with a demand for “greener” alternatives and lower prices, more rental fleets are using battery powered equipment than ever before. Booms and scissors powered by flooded lead-acid batteries provide many rental fleets with the capability of offering lighter and more compact equipment, along with the benefits of reduced annual fuel costs. So it’s important for rental fleets to realize that extending battery life with proper maintenance can improve their bottom line. Most fleets with battery-powered equipment already know that it’s necessary to charge and add water to flooded lead-acid batteries. Cutting costs by deciding to add water manually, versus using a more expensive automated watering system, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s saving you any money in the long run. Some fleets use a garden hose for watering which could actually be damaging the batteries and reducing their life expectancy. Yet many fleets think they’ll save additional costs on maintenance time and equipment doing it this way. It’s important to know that no battery manufacturer recommends using a garden hose to refill the water in any deep-cycle battery and this practice can affect warranty coverage. If you must water manually, make sure to use only distilled water and take careful electrolyte level measurements. Use a water delivery gun, watering pitcher or at the very least, some type of measuring cup to ensure you’re delivering the right amount for each cell. The electrolyte should be kept about 1/4-inch below the bottom of the fill-well in the battery’s cell cover. Watering systems, on the other hand, automatically and precisely fill multiple batteries at once, providing each battery cell with the correct amount of water. Automatic H20 Initially, they are more expensive, but for a fleet with many batteries to maintain, watering systems are easier to use and can reduce the down-time for your fleet. Even though automated watering systems are not used for every fleet, operators should determine which method is more cost effective by determining how often the batteries must be watered and the amount of time and cost it takes to water the entire fleet. On average, medium to heavyduty scissor lifts and aerial work platforms should have their batteries watered at least once per month. Watering batteries manually usually takes about 15-30 seconds per cell and typically involves removing the vent caps, watering using a watering pitcher or water caddy, and replacing the vent caps. For example, for a single 48-volt scissor lift, this would translate to approximately 6 to 12 minutes per lift. Multiply that times an average fleet with approximately 100 battery powered pieces of equipment, and watering once per month translates to 120 to 240 hours per year. Not bad, but also add in $15 per hour for an average technician, and your maintenance costs can average $1,800 to $3,600 per year. The time is reduced to 1-2 minutes per piece of equipment with an automated watering system, mostly because no vent cap removal and replacement is required on the battery pack for each unit. For the same size fleet, watered once per month, the maintenance time per year is reduced to 20 to 40 hours at a cost of $300 to $600 per year. That’s a reduction in cost of $1,500 to $3,000 annually or $7,500 to $15,000 over a five year life expectancy of the batteries. With the price of a watering system averaging about $100 per piece of equipment, the upfront cost can be a big investment. But when you consider that the expected life of a watering system is somewhat longer than five years, the numbers shift in your favor. Many fleet managers utilizing a watering system claim they can get 10 years out of them with a moderate level of maintenance and replacement parts. With this type of investment, a rental fleet could expect the payback period to be three to seven years with extended battery life as a bonus. So, for larger fleets, the upfront cost of a watering system can make a significant difference in the long run. However, since not every fleet is the same, you’ll have to figure-in your numbers for yourself to see what’s best for your particular fleet. Check the websites on various watering system manufacturers. They often have an online calculator that can help measure your return on investment. The overall goal is to increase the life of your fleet’s batteries. When you do, you’ll see some real savings that might change the way you think about battery maintenance and the importance ■ of carefully watering them. World of Concrete celebrated 40 years, Jan. 21-24 in Las Vegas. ALH was on hand and reports from the show. Successful show K icking off the 2014 trade show season, World of Concrete brought in 48,000 attendees and 1,250 exhibiting companies, Jan. 21-24 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Tom Cindric, vice president at Hanley Wood, said the exhibition - which this year marked its 40th anniversary - was a success. “We have seen 11,500 people attend our seminars this year, which tells us that there is a real thirst for knowledge in the sector,” Cindric said. “People are ready to grow their businesses and improve their skills.” World of Concrete Europe Hanley Wood told ALH it plans to launch a European version of the World of Concrete show. Next year, it will partner with SE Intermat, which organises the tri-annual Intermat construction equipment exhibition in Paris, France. Intermat Paris will take place from April 20-25, 2015, at the Paris Nord Villepinte exhibition center. World of Concrete Europe will be situated at the front of Hall 7 of the exhibition, with a demonstration area on the plaza outside the hall. “Our goal is to establish a standalone event in Europe 18 months after next year’s Intermat,” Cindric said. “Most likely this would also be in Paris in the autumn of 2016. Then in 2018 we would partner with Intermat again in the same format, and the plan would be to alternate the standalone event and the Intermat collaboration like this.” Show highlights Speaking at World of Concrete 2014, PCA chief economist Ed Sullivan said cement consumption will grow 8 percent in 2014 due to U.S. residential, non-residential and public construction sectors “all beating positive.” As always, Las Vegas-based Xtreme Manufacturing showed its wide range of telehandler offerings, pictured here, during the exhibition. The Scaffold & Access Industry Association held its annual Safety Boot Camp during World of Concrete. EZ Scaffold donated equipment, pictured here, for the event. Sullivan's forecast is based upon the loosening of credit availability, steady job creation and decreasing consumer debt burdens. “At no time in our history has there been this level of pent up demand,” Sullivan said. According to Sullivan, non-residential and residential will continue upward gains for the next three years, with new housing starts seeing the most activity due to old properties no longer being a market strength. “Housing affordability levels are still extremely favorable and mortgage lending standards are starting to ease,” Sullivan said. “Housing starts increased 18 percent last year and will be 18 percent this year, plus double digit gains will continue through 2015. Even with all that growth, we’re not near our previous levels.” Sullivan forecasts gains in housing from now through 2018, where the market will finally rest at 80 percent recovery from 2009’s levels. However, the gains will not always be Manitou showcased its rotating telehandler, the MRT 2150. Equipment notes monumental. “We will not get back to our historical averages, in fact we might never get back to where we are 10 years ago, but there will be increases.” Also for 2014, Sullivan said public construction will ramp up – but not entirely from the federal level. State and local governments, Sullivan said, will start to pay attention to neglected areas such as roads, bridges and other infrastructure. Lastly, PCA also said it no longer will be known as the full Portland Cement Association moniker. “There was confusion in the market among those unfamiliar with the industry as to what ‘Portland’ referred to, and many thought we were a regional organization,” said Gregory Scott, president and CEO of PCA. The organization will be known as “PCA,” with the tagline “America’s Cement Manufacturers. Ed Sullivan, PCA chief economist, speaks during World of Concrete 2014. 52 A range of products were on display at World of Concrete, from telehandlers to scaffolding. New from ReechCraft on display was the company’s PowerMast unit. The PowerMast consists of a base, platform support, a mast, a climbing unit and ties. It can be configured in single or double/twin variations and free stands up to 20 feet. The unit fills a void, said ReechCraft’s Jason Solhjem. “It can get you to the point where you need to add ties,” Solhjem said. The unit features 1,500 pounds of capacity, fits in a truck or van, is compatible with swing stages and wallboards and has the ability to be configured up to 200 feet. Sky Climber debuted a new hoist, the LNX, at the show. The LNX features an internal over-speed device that automatically resets by going in the upward direction; a solid sheave traction mechanism that grips the wire rope for ascent and descent using a roller system; overall modular design and construction and an emergency ascent hand wheel. The unit also features a removable power pack, four quick connect plugs and electrical components. Lifting capacities are 1,000, 1,250 and 1,500 pounds. Xtreme Manufacturing showed its range of telehandlers, from its biggest 40,000-pound capacity machine to some of its mid-range units. The Las Vegas-based manufacturer has plans to debut brand-new, innovative products at ConExpo (March 4-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center), where it will share its stand with newly acquired Snorkel. Snorkel showcased a boom on the Xtreme stand at World of Concrete, and according to global marketing manager Amelia Pearce, there was much interest in the machine – heads were turning to see what boom lift was on the telehandler manufacturer’s stand. Another new machine on display was Manitou’s MRT 2150 rotating telehandler. Manitou told ALH that World of Concrete was extremely busy for the company and that the MRT 2150 garnered a lot of interest. Kohler displayed its new water-cooled Kohler Direct Injection (KDI) engines, which meet Tier 4 Final emissions regulations without the need for a diesel particulate filter. Kohler has announced a partnership with JCB, which will see the manufacturer of small diesel engines supply three- and four-cylinder engines from 31 kW to 55 kW for JCB’s range of compact construction equipment. At ConExpo, JCB plans to unveil a new compact telehandler model that will be powered by the new Tier 4 Final, 2.5-litre, JCB Diesel by Kohler 4-cylinder engine. As with other JCB engines, there is no requirement for a diesel particulate filter or an SCR system to meet the Tier 4 Final emissions regulations. Training and education Lastly, the Scaffold & Access Industry Association told ALH its Safety Boot Camp was a complete success. “One of our core objectives is the promotion of safety through the development of educational offerings and to be a resource for those in the scaffold and access industry,” said Laurie Weber, SAIA executive director. “The week was buzzing with activity and SAIA was right in the middle of it,” said Granville Loar, SAIA’s director of education and training. The Scaffolding Safety Boot Camp is an interactive, hands-on experience that encourages participants to ask questions about scaffolding and the industry. During the self-paced activity, participants visited eight stations identified common mistakes and OSHA citations that occur. Once identified, the errors were then explained, corrected and proper installations and equipment were illustrated. Stations addressed supported and suspended scaffolds, personal protection equipment and powered access equipment. All participants received a ■ certification of completion. This reveals that there were 53 fatalities worldwide in 2013 involving aerial work platforms (AWPs), according to preliminary results from IPAF’s accident database. The main causes of these fatalities were: overturn (16), fall from height (13), entrapment (10), electrocution (7), impact with AWP (4) and falling object (2). Thirty (57 percent) of the fatalities occurred in the U.S., home of 54 percent of the world’s rental fleet. Three fatalities each were reported in Germany, Spain and the UK, two fatalities each in Belgium, Canada, France and the Netherlands, and one each in Armenia, Australia, Ireland, Malaysia, Norway and in the Middle East. IPAF’s accident reporting project was launched in January 2012 and has filled a gap where there was previously no single mechanism for reporting and analyzing serious accidents involving AWPs and no definitive data on the number and main causes of fatal accidents. In the first year of the project, 32 fatalities worldwide involving AWPs were reported. IPAF technical officer Chris Wraith stressed that the accident project is still in an early stage and cautioned against direct comparisons in its second year. “It will be at least 2016-2017 before any realistic year-on-year comparison on the frequency of accidents can be of value,” he said. “The comparative figures presented are for information only and do not in any way suggest an increase in the number of AWP- The main causes of fatalities and the machine type involved related fatalities from 2012 to 2013. They are more an indication that the awareness and success of the project is growing. Powered access is probably the safest way of performing temporary work at height. The industry is becoming more aware and reporting accidents, rather than having more accidents.” “As awareness of this groundbreaking project grows worldwide, so does the number of countries, companies and individuals who Speakers confirmed for prestigious IPAF Summit The IPAF Summit that will be held on April 3 in Windsor near London in the UK will see top speakers address topics ranging from how best practice in the use of powered access equipment can be applied on job sites, to accident statistics in the access industry and how this compares across other sectors such as aviation. I would encourage anyone who is aware of an AWP-related fatality in their country to report it to the IPAF website. There is a mechanism to make anonymous reports should people wish to do so.” IPAF’s accident reporting project is creating a comprehensive record of known accidents. Data gathered enables IPAF to analyze and look for common trends, and propose possible actions to further improve and promote the safe use of powered access worldwide. Data collected is kept confidential and used solely for the purposes of analysis and making recommendations to improve safety. The data presented is based on accidents reported directly to IPAF, information obtained by IPAF staff worldwide and through information collated from various news media. The accuracy of the data cannot be guaranteed, but where appropriate, action is taken to verify the facts and the data is amended should relevant information become available. IPAF rental company members in the UK have voluntarily committed to report any known AWP accidents involving their staff via the IPAF accident database. The live demo will promote the safe and effective use of aerial work platforms (AWPs) when carrying out temporary work at height near to power lines. This draws on data from IPAF’s accident reporting project which indicates that electrocutions are the single largest cause of fatalities to AWP operators in the US. IPAF is sharing the 8,000 square feet Lift Safety Zone with the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). Experts from both organizations will be present to provide advice on the safe use of AWPs and cranes, with the help of live machine demonstrations. Operators must always keep a minimum safe distance between overhead power lines and the closest point of the AWP when fully extended. IPAF staff will be on hand to answer questions about the operator eLearning module and the AWPs for Managers training course, and to provide a full range of technical guidance, videos, stickers, posters and educational tools. These areas are currently covered by the existing standards. www.ipaf.org info@ipaf.org IPAF USA 225 Placid Drive, Schenectady, NY 12303 Tel: (518) 280-2486 Fax: (518) 689-6800 tony.groat@awpt.org www.awpt.org IPAF USA MEMBERSHIP OFFICE 800 Roosevelt Road, Suite C-312 Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 Tel : (630) 942-6583 usa@ipaf.org www.ipaf.org IPAF WORLD HEADQUARTERS Moss End Business Village, Crooklands, Cumbria LA7 7NU, UK Tel: +44 (0)15395 66700 Fax : +44 (0)15395 66084 info@ipaf.org www.ipaf.org Almost half a million valid PAL Cards now worldwide A total of 127,365 people were trained by IPAF-approved training centers in 2013. This is an increase of 12.8 percent over the 112,887 people trained in 2012. Training available from IPAF-approved centers includes operator courses for which a PAL Card (Powered Access License) is issued, and harness and management courses for which a certificate is issued. IPAF issued a record 121,744 PAL Cards worldwide through its approved training centers in 2013, an increase of 12.7 percent over the 108,065 PAL Cards issued in 2012. A valid PAL Card is proof that the cardholder has been trained to operate powered access equipment safely and effectively. PAL Cards can be issued in standard or Smart PAL Card (machine-readable) versions. They are valid for five years and can be verified online at www.ipaf.org. IPAF’s PAL Card operator training program is certified by TÜV as conforming to ISO 18878. At the end of 2013, IPAF had 1,037 members and 615 training centers worldwide. “IPAF members and training centers are to be congratulated for continuing the success of these industry-led voluntary training programs and safety initiatives,” said IPAF CEO Tim Whiteman. “We anticipate that we will hit the mark of half a million valid PAL Cards sometime this year. Projects recently launched, such as the global rollout of management courses, the introduction of PAL+ advanced operator training and the eLearning module, promise exciting times for IPAF and the industry.” MARCH 2014 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS ALH 03 2014 IPAF NewsLA FINAL.indd 55 55 14/02/2014 09:48:35 ACCESS, SS,, LLIFT IFT & HANDLERS HANDLERS NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2013 VOLUME 9 ■ ISSUE 6 ACCEEESS,, LLIFT ACC IIFFFTT & HA HAN HA DLERS 2014 EBRUARY JANUARY-F 10 ■ ISSUE 1 VOLUME & ACCESS, LIFT HANDLERS SEPTEMBE R-OCTOBE VOLUME 9 ■ R 2013 ISSUE 5 A KHL Group G Publication P bli ti www.khl.com/alh khl / lh A KHL G Group Publication bli ti www.khl.c P om/alh / lh khl om/alh www.khl.c G A KHL Group P bli ti Publication TECHNOLOGY ware Rental Soft SHOW GUIDE S ARA & WoC INTERVIEW Manulift INTERVIEW INTERVIEW SHOW GUIDE ChineseSky OEMs jack ICUEE INTERVIEW SHOW REVIEW Simplex SAIA SHOW REVIEW e Spin cycl andlers Rotating teleh atility vers are adding rican to North Ame jobsites NORTH OFFICIAL MAGAZINE AMERICAN ICUEE Masts and Hoists Iss ‘‘19’ 19’ the th magic number when itit comes com to low-level access?
