The reservoir which was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers® from 1952 to 1954 was named after President Andrew Jackson (nicknamed "Old Hickory"), who lived in the vicinity, at The Hermitage. Old Hickory Lake is surrounded by five Tennessee counties: Davidson, Sumner, Wilson, Trousdale, and Smith, and includes the cities of Hermitage, Mt. Juliet, Lebanon, Hendersonville, and Gallatin, among others. Old Hickory is formed by the Old Hickory Lock and Dam located on the Cumberland River at mile 216.2 in Sumner and Davidson Counties, approximately 25 miles upstream from Nashville. The city of Hendersonville is situated on the northern shoreline of the lake, and Old Hickory, a portion of Metropolitan Nashville-Davidson County, is located on the southern side of the lake, just upstream of the lock and dam. The lake extends 97.3 miles to Cordell Hull Lock and Dam near Carthage, Tennessee. It is made up of 22,000 acres of water and 440 miles of shoreline. The lock, dam, powerhouse and lake are operated and supervised by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Eight marinas are located on Old Hickory: Creekwood Marina, Drakes Creek Marina, Anchor High Marina in Hendersonville; Cedar Creek Marina in Mt. Juliet; Gallatin Cages Bend Campground Located in the Gallatin area (Same dates and prices) Priced at $19 to $23 per night You can reserve your campground at 877-444-6777 or at www.recreation.gov The main resource office for Old Hickory Lake can be reached by calling 615-822-4846. Former Home of Johnny & June Carter Cash Old Hickory has long been a draw for country music stars. Many moved from rural America to Nashville to pursue their dreams, and the wildlife, the fishing possibilities and the quiet serenity of the lake were much more comforting and familiar than the city streets of Nashville. One of the most famous homes on the Lake was the home of Johnny and June Carter Cash. The compound, built in 1967, was home to Johnny and June for 35 years until their deaths in 2003. The property which included a 4.6 acre lakefront lot sold in 2005 for a reported $2.3 million to Barry and Linda Gibb. The over 13,800 sq. foot house featured round rooms, glorious lake views and lush landscaping. The home burned during renovations. Today, Old Hickory Lake is the site of “Water View” communities and individual homes, many with private boat docks. It offers waterfront living and a respite from the city. Why I Love Nashville . . . See notes on website about size of opening for specific birds.* Birds, Butterflies & Your Own Backyard Do you ever feel a little overwhelmed with the day to day — this bill to pay, that errand to run, and a to-do list a mile long? Vacation, a walk by the lake, and time away may be impossible to cram into your busy week, but with a little thought and planning you can create sanctuary in your own backyard. Wildlife needs four basic things: food, shelter, water, and places to raise their young. Here are some basic tips to create a haven in your yard: 1. Plant native flowers, trees, and shrubs. Butterflies love flowering plants. For example: Black-eyed Susan's, Columbine, Coneflowers, Clover, Dogwood, Orange Milkweed or Butterfly Weed. (more info: http://nabamidtn.org ) 2. Install a bird bath. This is a simple step to get birds into your yard. Remember, you will need to keep the water clear and the birdbath cleaned on a regular basis. Still water needs to be changed every other day or install a pump for circulating water. 3. Install bird boxes. These boxes, in addition to trees in your yard provide habitat for birds. A bird box is for shelter and a place to rest. A bird house is for nesting. Here are some things to consider when installing bird boxes: • Avoid sun and predators—Face away from the hottest sun (Best to mount facing somewhere between south-east and north to avoid direct sunlight and the heaviest rain.) • Hang for a clear flight path-Perches are for predators - no perch. • Drainage is needed to avoid a damp floor . • Create a way to open the box and clean out at the end of the season (Oct. or Nov. is the best time to clean out your boxes.) • Place bird boxes away from feeders. Joy comes to those who stay open to the wonders of nature. I have no bird boxes or bird baths, but recently I have found great pleasure in watching birds play in the water sprinklers when I water my front garden. A few minutes of watching them shower in the spray is like a cool cloth to an aching mind. Sanctuary comes in simple ways.
