The One N ight — the anticipation is over, the
accolades bestowed, the bow s taken. For the
ninth year. The Connecticut Art Directors Club
borrows a little something from the theatre to
create a special way to honor our best, to en­
courage us all to becom e a little better at our
craft. It’s lovely. It’s fun. It’s very special. And
yes — even a little gaudy. Well, why not? We
don’t need applause to know when w e’ve done
our best work. But it helps. We don’t need high
drama to keep us involved and excited about
w hat w e do. But it makes us feel good. We all
k n o w w e’re serious about our work. But a little
sh ow business can’t hurt. If W illiam Shake­
speare were alive today, he’d probably be doing
a little advertising.
Welcome to the Ninth Annual Connecti­
cut Art Directors Club One Show.
With membership now at 4 2 7 , to­
night ends a very successful year for the
CADC. Regular monthly program s and
special interest workshops and seminars
have helped stimulate growth, as well as
the continuation of services to club
members like Jobs Bank and “The One
Page” for the most up-to-date inform a­
tion on meetings and members.
This year for the first time group
medical insurance has been made avail­
able through the CADC and plans are in
the works for group dental insurance.
Continuing benefits are subscriptions
to “New England Advertising Week”
and “ U1 & C” , as well as car rental
discounts.
O ur internship committee under
the direction of Anna Lafferty has made
progress. Over 30 agencies/studios have
expressed an interest in sponsoring in­
terns and it looks like the CADC will
serve as a coordination point.
This year’s board of directors has
been wonderful and I can’t thank them
enough. N o one came forward to be the
One Show chairperson so the board di­
vided all the responsibilities, in addition
to their regular paying jobs and duties
connected with being on the board.
They committed themselves totally with
spectacular results.
Liz Talbot, the CADC executive di­
rector, has also done work well beyond
the job description — coundess phone
calls, letters, mailings, etc. Again, I can’t
thank her enough.
Automation is coming to the
CADC office with the addition of a com­
puter and w ord processor. Mailings will
be better controlled and on-time and the
mailing list will always be up-to-date.
It has been a tremendously exciting
and rewarding year for me and every­
one in the club has been extremely
cooperative.

night and thank you all for a very special
year I’ll always remember.

‘As far as the CADC One Show, what
can One say? Being a photographer, a
visual person. I’m more inclined to look
at the total visual rather than individual
content like typography. Looking at
1300 entries, my eyeballs were
knocked out of my head. I was flabergasted at the quantity of high caliber
work...including the Television com­
mercial category.”

“ Both the advertising and promotion
work showed a lack of really interest­
ing (funny, quick, sharp, serious, etc.)
ideas, and tended to try to make up for
them with tricky graphics. There was a
lot of good photography and art —
again very design conscious....But
don’t get me wrong; it is a good show.
The one really glaring weakness...was
in the use of typography. The range
went from overdone to not really done
at all. O f course, there were the excep­
tions. They won the “ bests” .
‘The professional quality and creative
‘freshness’ of the show impressed me. 1
returned to my studio with an enthusi­
asm I can only attribute to those entries
and that group of jurors. There was a
very high standard of judging, and the
work being produced in Connecticut is
worthy of comparison with any.”

should be recognized by all of us as

‘M y overall feeling was that the quality
of the graphic design was original, sen­
sitive and well thought out. I wondered
if it is the lifestyle in Connecticut that
makes that so. I felt that the originality
in the advertising was not of as high a
caliber as that in the graphic design.
Some entries seemed to be lovingly cre­
ated. You seem like an active, creative
group in C onneaicut.”
