Tole It To The Mountains www.wmdpgnh.org The Official Newsletter of the White Mountain Decorative Painters’ Guild An Affiliated Chapter of the Society of Decorative Painters Volume 33, Issue 1 editor@wmdpgnh.org President’s Corner… Reminders Happy New Year to our Painting Family! I hope everyone is fitting in some painting time to start that next new favorite painted piece. Thank you, Cindy, for organizing the January Installation meeting. You made it special for us all and the poem you read was lovely. Thank you to everyone who filled a position, all the volunteers, and everyone who attended. The food was great and the afternoon project was a lot of fun. Thank you, Nancy Schlis and Cindy Harrison, for teaching and bringing in our new painting year on a great note. Their project was perfect for every snowperson lover with its beautiful shades of blue design and as much glitz as we wanted. We have a lot of interesting and enjoyable afternoon programs planned. Some beautiful and innovative workshops and a great seminar are planned. Our first workshop will be March 12th with Tricia Joiner (Please check out the article about her workshop. You do not want to miss it.) In May, really April 30th we have Chris Watson coming to do a Santa and Chickadee box with us. Then November 12th we have a colored pencil workshop with Julie Talarski. This year’s seminar teacher is Laure Paillex. She will be teaching two one day projects in June. The date has not been finalized but we are hoping for the end of June or middle of July. The Board is still in the planning stage. More information will follow. Thank you all for your hard work in making each event a success and please remember that each of our events is that much better and more fun with you there. In September, Julie Talarski will expand our skills by using crayons instead of paint. In November, just in time for Christmas, Leeanne Kelly, Melanie Knox and Kris Lafayette , will be jointly teaching us ornaments. Keep your eye on the newsletters for photos of these fun upcoming events. Mark your calendars! The afternoon project for the March 13, 2016 meeting is Sunflower Scarf with Sue Mangano I am now beginning to work on the 2017 afternoon workshop lineup. Ideas? Teachers? Please let me know. Our afternoon programs are always fun and very appreciated by all. Carol’s Curriculum My sincerest appreciation to all for your confidence in my abilities through electing me as your Vice President/ President Elect. I hope not to disappoint and will give it my best effort. Please continue to support my efforts through volunteering, attendance and suggestions. You all know the expression, "it takes a village" and White Mountain is only as strong as its members. Please do whatever you are able so that we can continue the health of this wonderful group. Congratulations to all the new board members. I look forward to sharing ideas and serving with you. Thank you to all board members, past and present, who have selflessly given their time to continue to make White Mountain a vital chapter. Let's all join together to make this a fun and exciting new year!! - Carol Howard Vice President/President-Elect Reminder: If you have them, please bring the DecoArt So-Soft paints listed on page 1 to the meeting but don’t worry if you don’t have them, we share! If January's meeting was an indication of upcoming 2016, then we are all in store for a fun schedule of caring and sharing throughout the year. A round of applause goes out to Cindy Harrison and Nancy Schlis for their dual interpretation of a joyful snowman project. Fun, fun, fun by a dynamic duo! Thank you to Marilyn Ford and Deb Hagman for providing the wonderful centerpieces for the tables. The snowman centerpieces were beautiful and everyone had their fingers crossed to be lucky enough to leave with one. Maybe next time? March's afternoon program will be a heralding of early Spring as Sue Mangano teaches us to paint florals on a silk scarf. We will be able to proudly wear these to ward off the Winter blues (and snow!). Don't miss this lovely project. Harrison greeted the members. Old Business Secretary –T. Joiner was absent. The motion to accept the minutes as printed was made by N. Schlis and seconded by K. Lafayette. It was passed without discussion and will be filed as published. Treasurer: C. Beers-Witherell. The reports were printed in the newsletter. A discussion was held on contributions given in the past year. L. Kelly volunteered to help with the audit after the meeting. Membership dues were discounted during the spend-down to $10. for renewing members. A discussion was held for the need to increase the budget since the cost of the hotel meeting room has increased substantially. A method to assist in this was discussed and it was decided a box would be at the table for members to donate to the guild for the many delicious morning coffee snacks and lunch desserts that are brought by members. This was done to defer the cost of the room. Since the desserts are donated, there is no cost for that. The motion was made by N. Schlis and seconded by S. Cochis and was passed unanimously. The motion to accept the report was made by L. Provencher and seconded by J. Seastedt, and it passed with no further discussion. The installation of the new officers for 2016 was held. Thank you to all who painted and contributed to our collection of Memory Boxes this past year. We delivered many boxes to Catholic Medical Center in November. They appreciated our painting. We can be sure than our efforts bring some measure of comfort to grieving parents. Please continue to think of this service and use your talents to create new boxes during the coming year. Boxes are available at chapter meetings for your art. As you think of a design, keep in mind something that might bring comfort to a sad parent. Flowers, teddy bears, scroll work, angels... just some ideas. It has been requested that we not use rectangular boxes as they may resemble a coffin. We will try to always have boxes available or perhaps you have something in your stash! Thank you very much for your thoughtfulness, - Marilyn Moses and Jacque Seastedt Fellowship From Cindy Harrison: “Thank you for another wonderful year & lovely card. Join us for a ground breaking experience! Tricia Joiner is going to video tape her lesson and play it for us at the Workshop, so technically we will be taking a video lesson. The twist is –because Tricia is a member of our chapter, we still have the teacher physically at our beck and call to help us with any problem areas or give us an immediate critique. This is an experimental first run for a start up program of Video Assisted Seminars supported by DecoArt and presented to Chapters and other interested shops or groups around the country and the world. The program will allow Tricia to teach without physically being present. She will still be present - live - via the computer. The program allows Chapters, shops, etc. to participate in the class without paying for travel, lodging and food expenses, saving hundreds of dollars. The workshop fee is $25. There will be NO packet or paint fees. The paint will be provided by DecoArt and the packet can be downloaded, using an access code (which students will be sent by e-mail after signing up for the Workshop) from the on-line classroom and is included in the workshop fee. The surface fee for the oversized ornament is $28. You are welcome to provide your own surface. This is a good time of year to purchase an ornament as they are available in many craft and gift shops. What you will need is a 3 - 4 inch glass ball ornament with a colored MATT finish - dark red, green, blue, purple will all work well. If you do choose to purchase Tricia’s ornament, notify Dotty Pullo by the January meeting. Time is needed to order the ornaments. Because she will have them in her possession before the class, Tricia will sketch the designs on the ornaments ordered through her before class. But it would add to the learning experience if students brought an additional ornament to class to practice applying the design while she goes through the instructions to do this during the Workshop. REMEMBER: Everyone who participates will have special access to this video for a brief period of time on her website video classroom www.tricias.com. This will allow students to finish, review instructions or paint a second piece at home after the workshop. We need one more person to participate! Anyone who has signed up for a Secret Pal should have their Secret Pal’s name by now. Please don’t forget to start enjoying the fun of it at our next White Mountain meeting. If you have any questions, please let me know. Please contact me ASAP so you have time to shop/create your Secret Pal’s gift. Remember, limit is $10. The catalog is available on-line at http://decorativepainters.org/2016Conference/confspecialflipbook/mobile/ index.html#p=1 If you are thinking of flying to San Diego, flights out of Boston might be cheaper and it’s easy to get to Logan via bus (The parking is free at the Concord NH bus station.) but check the bus schedule to see how it coincides with flights. Another budget idea is to take a “red eye” from San Diego which is what Melanie Knox and I are doing. There’s a Jet Blue flight in the evening that doesn’t get to Boston until around 6:45 am. This allows us to take Saturday classes, have dinner and plenty of time to get to the nearby airport and save the cost of a hotel night because we’ll sleep on the plane. It’s time to think about nominating someone for SDP Service Awards. Perhaps there is a long time NET volunteer who should be nominated for the Outstanding Chapter Service Award. Nominations for Service Awards Due March 1 Do you know a special person in your Chapter, or an individual or business within SDP that should be recognized for their generous service to SDP? The SDP Service Awards were established to honor them – our best members. Download the Service Award Nomination Forms to nominate your fellow members who you believe deserve recognition. Submit your completed forms by Tuesday, March 1 to Miho Halsey by email at miho@decorativepainters.org or by fax at 319-269-9191. Nominations are being accepted in four categories: The Silver Palette Award recognizes a Chapter, individual or business for their noteworthy and exceptional contributions in furthering the purposes of SDP. The Dedicated Service Award recognizes a Chapter, individual or business for their outstanding and dedicated service in SDP. The Priscilla Hauser Award for Business and Industry is given for consistent and exceptional business contributions. The Outstanding Chapter Service Award is given to a Chapter member for their outstanding and dedicated service to a Chapter. SDP Headquarters: SDP President Wendy Watson emailed the members on 2/11/16 to announce that the SDP office building in Wichita has been sold but staff and operations would continue at that location through a leasing agreement. The building also houses the International Museum of the Society of Decorative Painting which will continue to be funded by the SDP Foundation. As a former president who is familiar with the building and expenses, I applaud this move which will allow more dues money to be spend on programs and adding value to membership. The building is expensive to heat and maintain and was no longer a good fit. The board and executive management team are moving in the right direction! SDP Committees: Each year the incoming SDP president makes appointments for volunteers to serve on a variety of committees. This year’s incoming SPD President is Kathy Swigon CDA. Meetings are usually held via free skype conference calls or email so anyone with an internet connection can participate. It’s a great way to meet people from other parts of the country. Some, such as the Awards Committee, only has a few meetings and is not on duty the entire year. These classes, categorized as "101", will allow the student to try mediums without ever having any prior experience or owning their own supplies. There will 6 introductory classes: acrylics with Linda McClure, stroke with Nancy Mullins, watercolor with Fran Mittelstet, mixing and relationship in oils with Bonnie Frederico CDA , color theory with Roxanne Pulchalski MDA, and colored pencils with Julie Talarsky. These 3 hour classes will replace the old 2 hour classes but will be a much greater in-depth learning experience. Attendance will be limited to 15 students, allowing a more personalized hands on introduction. Wouldn't it be wonderful to introduce a nonpainting friend to the joy of decorative painting or try something new yourself ? And, if you want to continue the journey, "102" can be chosen for furthering your knowledge. These classes will be independent , 4 hours and entirely separate from 101. They will not require that the student attend 101 and they will require a separate fee. Teachers to be announced. They, too, will be limited to 15. SO, invite your friends, register early and take those first steps into a new experience! Can't wait to see you all there!!!! - Carol Howard no later than 8:30 am on the day of that activity.
