The day is focused on children’s literacy and building a lifelong love of reading. I have often been inspired by the work of Dr. Seuss himself. Dr. Seuss was an Oxford educated scholar that focused on cartooning and comedic drawings in the 30s and 40s. In 1954, Dr. Seuss’s publisher was inspired by an article in Life magazine about illiteracy in children. The publisher wrote a list of 400 words that all children should know. He gave the list to Dr. Seuss and prompted him to use at least 250 of them in an entertaining children’s book. From there The Cat and the Hat was born! (Source: Random House) Researchers have long known that there are connections between reading fluency and spelling, writing and communicating. But did you know that it also helps improve analytical skills, boosts memory, and increases focus and attention? Some studies even show a connection between reading ability and mathematics. One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is to instill a love reading in them and Oh the Places You’ll Go! You can also check out our Hawkins staff video from Back to School Night that was inspired by Dr. Seuss’s Oh the Places You’ll Go video on YouTube by clicking on the link. http://youtu.be/bGxHdCPArDs Christina Orsi Kindergarten and New Student Registration Packets Available in our school office March 2nd. Page 3 Board meeting March 10th Minimum Day Monday, March 9th Early Dismissal AMK - 8:15-11:30am PMK - 9:45am-1:00pm 1-8th - 8:15am-1:00pm Dear parents of sixth grade students, If you are receiving this message, then we do not have proof of your child's Tdap vaccine. This is a reminder that all students entering seventh grade for the 2015-16 school year need to provide proof of the Tdap vaccine. Please provide the Hawkins School office proof of this immunization as soon as possible. (Your child may have already had this vaccine). If you have any questions please call the school office at 839-2380. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. State law requires that all incoming 7th graders get a whooping cough booster shot, called Tdap, before entering school. Students who have not received this booster shot prior to the beginning of the school year will not be allowed to start school. Some children may qualify for free immunizations through the Vaccines for Children Program. Pertusis, also known as whooping cough, is widespread throughout California. This vaccine can help keep your child and family protected. For more information about the law and where to get shots, please visit jeffersonschooldistrict.com or call the school at 839-2380.
