Summer 2012 Volume 6, Issue 2 RADical Times RENT-A-DAUGHTER, LLC Trusting God’s Hand ~ Luise Zabel, RAD client Inside this issue: Summer Activities 2 Office Spotlight 2 RAD Recipes 2 Community Events 3 Caregiver Spotlight 3 Health Corner 3 Radical Funnies 4 Trusting the protection of God has been the theme of Luise Zabel’s life. During her childhood in East Prussia, the draft of her husband into the German army during WWII, her family’s escape from the Russians, their passage and new start in America, and a recent near-death experience involving a golf cart accident, Luise Zabel continues to trust God’s provision. “I have clearly seen the hand of God protecting me in every part of my life story,” says Luise. To save Luise from being drafted into the German forces and ordered to do unspeakable acts, Johannes Zabel proposed marriage to her when she was 17 years old. Luise knew she would never get a better man! Luise & her brother Throughout the war, whenever she received word that he was close by, she would travel by train to spend as much time as possible with him. Luise tells the story of one Christmas when she received word Johannes was in a town nearby. She rode the train as far as it would take her, then walked the tracks for three miles in the dead of night until she reached the place where he was staying. To celebrate the holiday with her, Johannes cut off the top of a pine tree, and they decorated it with garland made from newspapers. Even though they slept on a pile of straw every night, they treasured the moments together. Amazingly, God protected Luise, her two young sons, her mother, and her sister the day the Russians invaded their town. They made it out of Neidenberg shortly before their home and all they owned was destroyed. Luise and her family survived on two slices of dried bread each day, their payment from the Russians for cutting down forests during the day. In the evenings, Luise would knit socks for a farmer’s wife who gave her a quart of milk for every pair she finished. Wedding Day Photograph How Luise and her family narrowly escaped execution from the Russian soldiers and made it to safety until the war ended is a remarkable story. Today, as Luise is recovering from a recent accident caused by a bridge collapse, she remembers how God took care of her in the past and knows He’ll continue to see her through. When the bridge collapsed, the golf cart she was riding in landed on top of her, breaking both her legs and arms. In this past year, she has persevered through many surgeries and therapy sessions. She appreciates the assistance she receives from her RAD caregivers Luise & Lynn, whose care allows her to live independently in her condo. “I am so pleased with RAD caregiver my caregivers,” says Luise. “They know my routine and do what needs to be done without being asked. This is important to me.” Yet Luise’s caregivers say they are the ones who are blessed because they have the privilege of caring for such a lovely, gracious woman! We are amazed at how successful she has been with caregiving right from the start! The schedulers describe her as “Mary Poppins for the elderly,” because of her positive demeanor and immediate connection to clients. Julie seeks to get to know her clients personally, and she creatively finds ways to incorporate their interests into activities they can do together during her visits. We also appreciate her willingness to go to any client, even accepting appointments during the evenings and weekends! Her clients recognize they have a special person caring for them, and they look forward to Julie’s visits. Before coming to Rent-A-Daughter, Julie worked as a nanny for children, developing many personal care and housekeeping skills that she now utilizes as a RAD caregiver. We are thankful Julie has joined our team of caregivers! Health Corner: Signs of a Heart Attack Over 50% of people who experience a heart attack will wait for over two hours before getting help. Knowing the signs of an attack is vital, because the faster a heart attack victim receives care, the greater their chance of survival. ♥ Chest discomfort — mostly in the center of the chest, lasting for more than a few minutes or going away and coming back. RADical Funnies: Obituary for the Pillsbury Doughboy ~ source unknown The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from being repeatedly poked in the belly. He was 71. Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, and Captain Crunch. The gravesite was piled high with flours. Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Born and bread in Minnesota, Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on halfbaked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he lived to be a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions. Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, three children: John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, along with one still in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father Pop Tart. The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes. If this made you smile, share that smile with someone who is having a crumby day and kneads a lift!
