Course Overview
Learn what’s new and how to apply the
new concepts to your work setting. Sterile
processing of devices is making the news.
Be prepared to show how you are keeping
pace with the trends. Your work is vital
to the health of your hospital and your
patients. You can lead the way to improving
the products you produce.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able
to:
1.Discuss best practice steps for
sterilization of surgical instruments,
2.Explain best practice steps for the
High-Level Disinfection (HLD) of flexible
endoscopes,
3.Identify the recent CDC recommendations
for improving instrument reprocessing,
and
4.Understand common questions a
Surveyor may ask regarding instrument
reprocessing.
Intended Audience
This continuing education activity is
intended for sterile processing personnel,
perioperative nurses, and other healthcare
professionals who are interested in learning
more about best practices, rules and
regulations, and suggested performance
recommendations for reprocessing reusable
medical devices.
Teaching Methodologies
This continuing education activity is
governed by principles of adult learning.
PowerPoint images will be used to augment
the speaker’s presentations and a supportive
study guide with content and references is
provided to each participant. Attendees will
have an active role in discussion as well as
opportunities to ask questions and share
experiences.
Continuing Education Information
1.A certificate of completion will be given
to you at the conclusion of the course.
CE Credits:
This continuing educational program is
approved for 6.0 contact hours by the
International Association of Healthcare
Central Service Materiel Management
(IAHCSMM), Certification Board for Sterile
Processing & Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD) and
by the California Board of Registered Nurses
(CBRN). All others involved in instrument
reprocessing are encouraged to attend.
Attendees must stay for entire Conference
to receive their Certificate of Participation.
The certificate of course completion
issued at the conclusion of this course
must be retained in the participant’s
records for at least four (4) years as
proof of attendance.

About the Presenter
Bob Marrs, CRCST, CIS, CHL
Director, Consulting Services & Field Operations, Aesculap, Inc.
Bob Marrs is director of consulting services and field operations with
Aesculap. Previously he worked in the perioperative setting for 19 years
in various roles from certified surgical technologist to CSD technician,
case cart coordinator, sterile processing manager and director. Bob
maintains certifications as a CRCST, CIS, and CHL. He maintains
instructor status with IAHCSMM. Bob served as the president of the
Texas State Association of Central Service Professionals for six years and
an IAHCSMM executive board member.
Bob holds a Bachelors Degree in professional communications from
Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He travels throughout the US
and world speaking about various CSD and infection control issues.
He has been published with numerous healthcare publications and has
contributed to the IAHCSMM CRCST 7th edition and CHL Leadership
Manual. Bob has a passion for excellence in sterile processing and
believes that certification through education provides the foundation
needed for superior patient care.
About the Presenter
Chuck Hughes
Vice President, SPSmedical Consulting Services
Chuck has worked over 30 years in the manufacturing industry in areas
of R&D, Regulatory Affairs, Microbiology, Marketing & Sterilization
Training. He is a corporate member of numerous organizations, including
AAMI and CSA where he contributes to writing standards. A recipient
of many awards, including the Award of Honor from IAHCSMM and
an Acknowledgement for Exceptional Service and Dedication from
IAHCSMM.
