Each of our donor’s funds enhances some facet of the community. You work with us to make a mark. Your community is better because of your gift; and the Foundation is stronger because of your participation. The Foundation is all the more creative and powerful in its giving because of the variety of its donors’ perspectives. Your Foundation is evolving to better serve you and the community by increasingly aligning its resources around grant-making priorities. We’ll step up our impact, and take some measured but bold risks. The Foundation is so broad in reach, so trusted and so permanent, that such pulling together is a natural step forward for us. In 2010, contributions were up, new funds were up and more donors than ever joined us in learning about needs in our region that demand creative and powerful giving. You share our eagerness to make even more of an impact. One of our region’s priorities is to prepare a workforce that will attract and sustain employers in the coming years. With nearly one quarter of our residents less than 18 years of age, our population is among the youngest in the state. Looking ahead to new sources of prosperity in our region, long known for innovations in manufacturing, health care, and education, we held a series of donor education programs that examined what it will take to prepare future workers— from investing in early childhood education to science and technology initiatives that complement our already strong focus on health care job creation. Among the close friends we lost in 2010 is Jack Lund, a Foundation founder. Jack personified creativity in his life and Ann Lisi and Joe Salois guide Foundation activities that support nonprofit organizations throughout Central Massachusetts. in his giving. His legacy includes the Foundation’s annual Renaissance Award, which he established and endowed to nurture nonprofit leadership in perpetuity. “By creating a fund, you can carry on your own way of bettering the world,” said Jack. We honor Jack and each of our donors by building on the rich legacy of our founders. Sincerely, On the cover: In Da Zone, the award-winning hip-hop troupe of the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester, awed the audience with their performance at the Foundation’s Celebration of Arts and Community, held in February in Worcester’s historic Hanover Theatre. Alden Trust decided to expand its grantmaking priorities to encompass education from early childhood through adulthood, its trustees turned to the Foundation, confident in our community knowledge and ability to spring into action on their behalf. Within months, their investment became an active grantmaking resource. At the same time, the new George I. Alden Community Education Fund became part of the Foundation’s $116 million endowment, which pools together all of our individual donors’ funds and gifts. The Foundation protects and grows this community asset through prudent investments that enlarge the capacity of each fund and the Foundation as a whole to do good—now and in perpetuity. Each donor enriches and mines these assets in a different way. Run by the people, for the people, the Foundation is unique as a citizen-run model of philanthropy dedicated to enhancing the community as a whole, now and in the future, rather than just one sector or cause. The Foundation remains faithful to the vision of its founders, whose experiment in a distinctly neighborly and self-reliant model of philanthropy took hold and spread deep roots. Trusted for its transparency and efficiency and valued for its wisdom and longevity, the Foundation is unique in its capacity to unite people from diverse sectors in influencing and effecting positive change within the region. The Foundation’s reach and power are rooted in its personal relationships with each donor. We stand by our donors long after they are gone and ensure that their wishes are fulfilled in perpetuity. This loyalty to our donors’ intentions is embedded in our governing bylaws and embodied in our dedicated staff. Every day, our staff guides families and individuals as they make some of their most intimate decisions about their legacy and their deepest values to craft funds that fulfill their philanthropic and financial goals. Worcester Tree Initiative brings trees to schools, parks and city streets. In the five stories that follow, you’ll see this art of giving at work in all its variety and generosity. A woman with a fondness for dogs funds canine assistance for deaf and physically disabled people. Two retired professors continue their life’s work—to promote quality and affordable education that prepares nurses for leadership roles. A financial advisor honors the high school teacher who influenced his life and career success. Long after their passing, a couple ensures that high quality health care remains near their town. And a son pays tribute to his late mother by contributing to causes she cherished in her beloved hometown, Worcester. Donors entrust us with their dreams and gifts—and leave the details to us. Even those who take an active hand in grantmaking through donor advised funds find the Foundation’s guidance of value. Greater Worcester Community Foundation • 2010 ANNUAL REPORT 3 Max H. Kuhner and Eloise A. Kuhner Fund Longtime Oakham residents keep health care close to home In the early ‘50s, Max and Eloise Kuhner built a rustic, chaletlike house on former farmland in Oakham. They filled their home with displays of coins, arrowheads and keepsakes from their travels as well as Eloise’s vast assortment of teddy bears. Max was an engineer; but at home, he became a craftsman. If he had to cut down a tree, he turned it into stools, benches and coffee tables. A genial, community minded man, Max established a trust to ensure the future of the local Holden Hospital, a cherished resource to families throughout the Wachusett region. Eloise shared her husband’s support for local health care and volunteered at the Barre Family Health Center. “Eloise was a kind and generous individual,” says Stephen T. Earls MD, the center’s medical director, “and a charming lady. She made bears out of any material—towels, old mink coats. Children were drawn to her.” Whimsical with teddy bears, Eloise was clear-eyed about securing Max’s legacy. In 1990, seven years after his death, the Holden Hospital closed, and to fulfill his desire to keep health care nearby, she had her attorney transfer his bequest to the Foundation. When Eloise Kuhner donated $7,000 to the Oakham Rescue Squad for a defibrillator, the grateful team gave her two teddy bears clad in clinical garb. Eloise died in 2005, and according to her wishes, the Foundation used her charitable remainder trust to create two funds. The Max H. Kuhner and Eloise A. Kuhner Fund supports local programs serving children and provides scholarships to Oakham residents pursuing careers in medicine or nursing. The Barre Family Health Center has been serving The primary beneficiary of the Max H. and Eloise A. Kuhner Memorial Fund is the Barre Family Health Center, now part of UMass Memorial Medical Center. “We are deeply appreciative of the Kuhners’ generosity,” says Dr. Earls. Oakham and its neighboring towns since 1973. Thanks to Max and Eloise, residents of Oakham and its neighboring towns obtain excellent health care close to home. Eloise was a kind and generous individual. She made bears out of any material . . . Children were drawn to her. Stephen T. Fond of animals, she was curious about the many dogs on the property. The staff showed her around. Captivated, she created a fund to support the nonprofit, which provides independence to deaf and physically disabled people through the use of canine assistance. It was love at first sight for both the visitor and the staff, who learned later that their new friend was Rosamond (Roz) Riley Bennett, a granddaughter of Worcester industrialist Milton Prince Higgins and, like her mother, Katharine Higgins Riley, a vigorous philanthropist. On the board of NEADS until her death in 2007, Roz faithfully attended every event, arriving with her dog, her knitting, and a sack to recycle the evening’s plastic utensils. Her grants help fund the development of service dogs for Greater Worcester residents such as Teddy, who has muscular dystrophy. As a child, he was the agency’s first client. Now a college graduate, he recently returned for his second dog. NEADS obtains many hearing dogs from shelters. Breeders donate its full-service dogs, when they are puppies. NEADS matches each client with a particular dog and engages prison inmates in their training, an intensive 12-month process. Sue and Chris enjoy their constant companions, service dogs from NEADS. The ingenuity of using dogs to help people enjoy productive lives appealed to Roz, who had a passion for animals. Although she was frugal, she traveled the world to see wildlife, from polar bears in Antarctica to gorillas in Rwanda. “Mom instilled in us her love of animals,” says Rebecca Crocker, one of Roz’s five children. “Through the Foundation, she contributes to what she loves in perpetuity.” Since 1991, the fund has been helping NEADS develop service dogs that change people’s lives. Mom instilled in us her love of animals. Through the Foundation, she contributes to what she loves in perpetuity. (Dresser) Herron, her two sisters and brother lived in the Elm Street mansion built by their great-great-grandfather, Levi Lincoln Jr., a governor of Massachusetts and the first mayor of Worcester. When Frannie married architect John Herron, her home became the modernist, glass-walled aerie he designed on Salisbury Street. The couple raised their four children in that house. But in the early ‘70s, they were drawn to the character and neighborliness of the city’s old Crown Hill section. They moved into a house at 15 Oxford Street, renovating it and de-electrifying its chandeliers. “Their parties had a magical atmosphere,” recalls their eldest son, Jock. Frances M. Herron actively participated in many groups that benefited Worcester and lectured on Worcester history. Like the John and Frannie Herron Park, a beguiling pocket park around the corner from their home on Oxford Street, the Fund is a living memorial. A descendant of other early Worcester families, including the Tory Chandlers and Paines, Frannie wrote and lectured on Worcester history and joined many community organizations. A president of the Worcester Garden Club and the Edward Street Day Care Center, she was the first female moderator of the First Unitarian Church and among the first volunteers at Planned Parenthood. Equally ardent in civic life, John helped found Preservation Worcester. In 1997, two years after his mother died, Jock started a donor advised fund in her honor. “The Foundation is ideal for this purpose,” says Jock. “It strengthens the entire community, not just one institution. My mother was close to many groups and had great affection for the city as a whole. This fund connects us with organizations, people and causes she cared about.” Grantees include the American Antiquarian Society, Bancroft School, Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Greater Worcester Land Trust. Jock enjoys his role as fund advisor. “In time, our son Levi may become involved,” says Jock. “I’ve lived in many different places. But to me, Worcester is home.” The Foundation is ideal for this purpose. It strengthens the entire community, not just one institution. Jock Herron 6 Greater Worcester Community Foundation Greater Worcester Community Foundation 2010 ANNUAL REPORT •• 07 ANNUAL REPORT Lillian R. Goodman and Mary K. Alexander Fund Two leaders in nursing education continue their life’s work Two pioneering educators from the University of Massachusetts Worcester Graduate School of Nursing— Lillian R. Goodman EdD, dean emeritus and professor emeritus, and her partner in work and life, Mary K. Alexander EdD, professor emeritus and former associate dean—created this donor advised fund. Its goal is to continue their life’s work: to promote high quality and affordable education that prepares nurses for leadership as clinicians, teachers and researchers. Both professors spent 35 years moving Massachusetts into the vanguard of nursing education. At Worcester State University, they were among the founders of New England’s first nationally accredited baccalaureate program for registered nurses. In 1991, Dr. Alexander was invited to join the faculty of UMass Worcester as full professor and Dr. Goodman became the second dean of the UMass Worcester Graduate School of Nursing. They worked closely with UMass Amherst School of Nursing administration and faculty in establishing the state’s first doctoral program in nursing. Their fund provides the nursing programs at Worcester State University and UMass Worcester with annual grants of $1,000 toward scholarships or innovative programs. “What these two public-sector institutions are doing in nursing education is exemplary,” says Dr. Goodman. “All their graduates pass state board exams the first time. They get good jobs and graduate schools want them.” Mary K. Alexander EdD, and Lillian R. Goodman EdD, continue to advance quality public-sector nursing education through their fund. Dr. Alexander regards the Foundation as a force magnifier. “Its investment productivity builds our fund,” she says, “and its commitment to developing health care resources attracts like-minded donors.” Investing in exemplary nursing education programs at Worcester State University and “I hope to live long enough to see the role of nurses in advancing health care recognized as second to none,” says Dr. Goodman. “Our fund will contribute to this goal forever.” UMass Worcester. Its investment productivity builds our fund, its commitment to developing health care resources attracts like-minded donors. Mary K. Alexander Greater Worcester Community Foundation • 2010 ANNUAL REPORT 7 The Edward Carien Scholarship Fund An endowed scholarship is a tribute to a revered teacher Terrence M. McMahon, a wealth advisor to high net worth individuals, created this scholarship to honor Edward Carien, his accounting teacher at Doherty High School. After graduating in 1989, Terrence took Mr. Carien’s advice and majored in accounting at Bentley College. “Without his encouragement and inspired teaching,” says Terrence, “I would never have chosen accounting as my major. Mr. Carien taught a subject that could be difficult and boring and made it fun. “Accounting has opened doors for me,” Terrence continued. “It’s been the foundation of a very rewarding career.” But in high school, Terrence was something of a class clown as well as an A student in Mr. Carien’s classes, which he took for two years. More than once, says Terrence, “Mr. Carien threw me out of his class. He demanded respect. But if I didn’t get a concept, I could come in after school and get help. He let me be who I was. He was fair and he was challenging—which was a great combination for me. “Our classes were interactive and free flowing,” adds Terrence. “He let us learn in our own way, which prepared us well for college.” “Mr. Carien was fair and he was challenging, which was a great combination for me,” says Terrence M. McMahon, with his daughters Aislinn (left) and Kiley. At Doherty High School, accounting teacher Edward M. Carien (1916 – 2004) prepared his students for success in work and life. Grateful for his loving family and satisfying career, Terrence says, “The people I feel most thankful to are my parents and Mr. Carien.” He took his idea for a scholarship to Doherty High School, where he learned of the Foundation. “I called and within 24 hours, set up my fund,” says Terrence. “The staff answered each and every question and gave me peace of mind. Now, I’m talking to my parents about creating a fund in their honor.” I called and within 24 hours, set up my fund. The staff answered each and every question and gave me peace of mind. Terrence M. Greater Worcester Community Foundation • 2010 ANNUAL REPORT Grantmaking Putting gifts to work G reater Worcester Community Foundation awards cash grants to nonprofit organizations that serve the Central Massachusetts communities in the areas of arts and culture, community development, education, environment, health, and human services. Competitive grants provide annual, and often renewable, funding for a wide range of nonprofit initiatives. These grants are made possible by donors who seek to improve the quality of life in our area. Discretionary, field of interest and committee-advised funds, invested by the Foundation as permanent endowments, provided over $2.3 million in 2010. Committees appointed by the Foundation or donor make targeted grants according to defined goals for each fund. Ranging in size from $250 to more than $150,000, these grants support programs, operations, and organizational improvements. Our web site has details and application forms. Donor advised and designated grants totaled over $1.2 million in 2010. Advised grants reflect the changing interests and priorities of donors, who actively make recommendations throughout the year. Designated grants reflect the permanent selections made by donors to support one or more organizations with annual grants. Grants may fund general operating costs, special projects, capital expenditures, or emergency needs. Scholarships for college-bound residents of Worcester County are awarded from more than 100 named funds. In 2010, the Foundation awarded over $550,000 in scholarships that vary from $250 to more than $4,000. Candidates submit just one application to be considered for all scholarships that suit their qualifications. We accept scholarship applications throughout February and March. Greater Worcester Community Foundation • 2010 ANNUAL REPORT 31 Financials An overview of 2010 D uring 2010, Greater Worcester Community Foundation’s capacity to meet its mission increased over the prior year, thanks to a growth in fund value and the generosity of people whose bequests and gifts expanded our endowment. The Foundation has a responsibility to our donors and to our community to ensure that philanthropic contributions given to us last forever. Gifts are invested in a commingled pool governed by a disciplined strategy that is intended to both preserve capital and improve the availability of spendable funds to meet our grant and program commitments. Investment Committee chairman Tom Bartholomew (right) and consultant Jeff Croteau review the Foundation’s portfolio strategy. Target Allocation Real Estate 8% Diversified Inflation Hedges 7% Global Equities 35% Absolute Return 10% High Yield Bonds 10% Long-Short Equity Hedge Funds 10% The Foundation uses a total return spending policy and a maximum payout of 4% for grants from permanently restricted endowment funds. Rather than distributing net income, a total return approach allows spending of a fixed rate of total market value including realized and unrealized gains. This policy enables the investment managers to maximize overall investment return, incorporating growth and income strategies, while minimizing the impact of market fluctuations. It is our aim that over many years and decades, this disciplined approach will support an increase in our capacity. Over the past 15 years, the Foundation portfolio has grown more than 7% per year. In this volatile economy, we attempt to manage risk through extensive diversification. Among our investments are highyield bonds, international equities, and various sectors including emerging markets, flexible capital, global macros, and inflation hedging strategies. The chart on this page describes our asset classifications and target allocation. The detailed investment policy and up-to-date performance evaluations are available by calling the Foundation office. Core Bonds 20% In this volatile economy, we attempt to manage risk through extensive diversification. 32 Greater Worcester Community Foundation • 2010 ANNUAL REPORT Selected Financial Information Years ended December 31, 2010 and 2009. CREATE A NAMED FUND ADD TO AN EXISTING FUND With a gift of $10,000 or more, you can establish a named fund to create your personal legacy. You choose the type of fund that best meets your goals, and we do the rest—handling all administration and grant making on your behalf. Your fund may be donor advised, scholarship, designated, discretionary, or field of interest. Each of our named funds accepts additional contributions of any amount, giving donors the opportunity to support a cause, honor a loved one, or express your values. A complete roster of named funds is listed in the Annual Report and on our website. Creating a fund is a permanent and powerful way of giving. Your intentions are honored in perpetuity. Your money enters a well-managed endowment that preserves capital during tough times and extends the value and reach of your giving. And because we are a public charity, you receive the maximum tax benefits allowed by law. You can contact the Foundation at 508.755.0980 or visit the website at www.greaterworcester.org OR MAKE A PLANNED GIFT You can make a gift to the community that provides income and tax benefits now and after your lifetime supports your philanthropic goals. Ways to make a planned gift include • Naming the Foundation in your will or as the beneficiary of IRA assets • Transferring a life insurance policy, making premium payments tax-deductible • Donating retained real estate as a future gift while using the property throughout your lifetime • Setting up a pooled income fund gift, charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust 2010 Annual Report Production Credits Production Manager: Kelly A.
