Welcome
to an exciting
new look Activate
program for 2014!
Entering into its ninth year in Palmerston, I know firsthand
how important Activate is for many of our Palmerston
residents. No matter your age, gender, weight or income
- all of us should be focused on choosing healthy lifestyle
options and Activate makes it easier than ever as it aims
to break down traditional barriers to promote an active
way of life and adopt a nutritious diet.
What an amazing opportunity you have to
spend the next 8 weeks sampling all that
Palmerston offers to keep us fit and well. The
2014 Activate program offers a great variety
of walks, fitness and information sessions to
get you started in leading a more active life
and eating a healthy diet.
If this is your first time signing up to the program, I offer
you a very warm welcome and congratulate you on making
the decision to get out, get active and take our eight week
healthy lifestyle challenge.
All the sessions offered are suitable from
beginners
to those already active and
looking for new challenges. Make sure to
tell the instructor if you have any injuries or
limitations so they can be accommodated.
Finding the time and motivation in our busy lives is
sometimes the toughest hurdle to overcome, but looking
at this year’s list of Activate activities I’m confident there
is something for everyone no matter how hectic your
schedule.

Getting Started!
Look out for our volunteer Activate
Ambassadors, who are there to make you
feel welcome and can answer your questions
about the program and collect your feedback.
I also encourage you to ‘stick with it’ throughout the eight
weeks, and persevere particularly around the half way
mark when the novelty sometimes wears off and it can be
easy to start making excuses.
You will receive a weekly newsletter throughout
the program with updates to programs
and other relevant information. Like us on
facebook to stay in touch.
Council’s Healthy Palmerston team has worked harder
than ever this year to ensure the Activate program keeps
the costs for members low, but the benefits and rewards
high. No matter what your current fitness state, over
the next eight weeks you’ll watch it improve while being
introduced to new, worthwhile experiences and maybe
even make some new friends along the way.
This year your challenge is to improve your
fitness levels, eat a more nutritious diet and
have fun doing it!
It’s encouraging to see so many of our residents make
an active decision each year to improve their lifestyle with
our program. I’ll certainly be popping up at many of the
weekly activities and am looking forward to meeting our
new members, catching up with some familiar faces, and
of course getting out and getting active!
Again, congratulations on making an important step
towards a healthier lifestyle.
We hope you enjoy the Activate experience.
Your Activate team is here to support you.
Keep in touch!

Orienteering
Come and Try Orienteering
Sunday 1st June
Mitchell Creek - Follow signs from corner Forrest Parade and
Lambrick Avenue
Start between 7 and 9am, finish by 11am. Suitable for all ages
and fitness levels, both individuals and groups. Orienteering is an
outdoor activity which is held in bush, park and urban settings.
Participants receive a map marked with a course comprised
of a series of checkpoints, located on features such as path
junctions, park benches and scrub fowl mounds. Checkpoints
are identified by an orange and white flag or plate. Participants
navigate their way around their course with the aim of finding all
the checkpoints in order before finishing.
You can go at whatever pace suits you, and courses range in
difficulty and length to suit beginners through to experts.
Top End Orienteers is a volunteer sporting organisation which has
been established for over thirty years. We hold orienteering events
in parks, bushland and suburbs in and around Darwin twice a
month for most of the year, with our annual program typically
including areas such as Mindil Beach, East Point, Casuarina
Coastal Reserve and Mitchell Creek.
The events are open to members and non-members alike, with
a range of courses offered (including a pram-friendly option), to
cater for all abilities ranging from new comers to experienced.
To contact the club, email to topendorienteersNT@gmail.com or
contact Susanne on 0431 822 812.
