WRITER’S NOTES
This is a world premiere. The music, script and
orchestrations were all created for this run at
the Lincoln Theatre. I hope some of you will
take the time to give me feedback at
www.PanMusical.com.
My sentiments and feelings are all fully
expressed in the music and orchestrations
which you will experience shortly. It is most
comfortable for me to express in that way so I
have nothing to add here. Now, let me take
this short time we have together to tell you
about my own mother.
One day back in elementary school I had a group of children yell to me, “You’re
a mama’s boy!” I ran home because I was so excited to tell my mother about it.
The other students knew I was a mama’s boy! They could actually see it! I was
so proud that it was a clear fact to them, and proud to tell my mother about it.
So when the day came for me to leave for Neverland, my mother cried too. She
simply asked me to take out the trash before I left, yes, she really did. There
was no Captain Hook in my Neverland. I fought a different foe. JM Barrie is very
clear that each of us has our own individual Neverland. PAN the musical is only
the story of Wendy’s adventure. Each of our Neverland adventures is unique.
For many years I remained in Neverland, but my mother always kept the
window open for me to return. She knew, like only a mother can, that even
though she could see into her children’s dreams, she had to watch the
adventure from afar. That must be the most difficult part for a mother because
not everyone returns from Neverland.
My mother has always asked me to write her a song. I never really have,
because I felt a simple song would not be enough. Not grand enough to wipe
away her tears and not powerful enough to change the past. But PAN the
musical is all that. So mother, PAN the musical is for you. I have woven our
story into it. So while everyone else has their own Neverland experience, you
might notice bits and pieces that will remind you of our own adventure.
It’s easy to be small and just remain silent, with no one noticing just who or
what you are; but there’s no adventure in that. We all had to take the journey,
didn’t we? Welcome to PAN.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES
Search the Web for “Peter Pan,” “Neverland,” and “Lost Boys” and
you’ll get an endless number of references. It’s amazing. Since Conrad
Askland walked into my house last Spring with a script idea and some
songs floating through his mind, I’ve had to pause and consider how
deeply this story is rooted in our hearts and minds. The names of this
place and these characters are more than iconic; they’ve actually
become root metaphors in our language. To get at this story, I’ve tried
to understand why this is so. I can’t quite find the words, but perhaps
Rainer Maria Rilke said it best:
“. . .even if you found yourself in some prison, whose walls let in none of
the world's sound - wouldn't you still have your childhood, that jewel
beyond all price, that treasure house of memories?”
PAN brought me back to the place and let me stay a while. My journey
began, in this and so much else, with my wife Lindsey. Without her
spirit, energy, creativity, vision, and love, I could never find the way. I’m
very grateful to Conrad for trusting me with his work, including me in
the building process, enduring my endless questions and ideas of
varying quality, even as he was trying to work out complex chords, and
for being as great at co-producing as he is at making music, songs, book,
and conversation. My ”Crew” of Tammy, Seth and Brooke contributed
so many ideas it’s hard to remember where my work ends and theirs
begins. My daughters Adia and Alex provide the fuel for my creative
energy. My brother Jay with his art and spirit took me to Neverland so
long ago. To these dear ones, and to my actors, their parents,
grandparents, the META Board, our wonderful supporters, and all those
who came before in community theater and upon whose shoulders we
now stand, I say this most emphatically:
You believed. You truly believed, and that
brought our show to life.

Sir James Matthew Barrie,
1st Baronet, (9 May 1860
– 19 June 1937) was a
Scottish author and
dramatist, best
remembered today as the
creator of Peter Pan. PAN
the musical is based on
JM Barrie's book "Peter
Pan and Wendy" which
was published in 1911.
The child of a family of
small-town weavers, he was educated in Scotland. He moved to London,
where he developed a career as a novelist and playwright. There he met
the Llewelyn Davies boys who inspired him in writing about a baby boy
who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens (included in The
Little White Bird), then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't
Grow Up, a "fairy play" about this ageless boy and an ordinary girl
named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of
Neverland.
This play quickly overshadowed his
previous work and although he
continued to write successfully, it
became his best-known work,
credited with popularizing the name
Wendy, which was very uncommon
previously. Barrie unofficially
adopted the Davies boys following
the deaths of their parents.

Barrie was made a baronet by
George V in 1913, and a member of
the Order of Merit in 1922. Before
his death, he gave the rights to the
Peter Pan works to London's Great
Ormond Street Hospital, which
continues to benefit from them.
