Knowing that the top-ranked
Mustangs would not back down,
the Owls made it a priority to
come out strongly in the second
half and were able to extend the
lead to 39-31 in the first five min-

utes of play. As expected though,
MacDuffie would not go quietly
and made up the difference and
streaked out in front by six with
6 minutes remaining in the game.
However, Hoosac remained
calm and with determined defense, steady free throw shooting,
two deadly three pointers, and a
huge dunk by Unique McLean,
the Owls regained the lead and
maintained control until the final
buzzer.
Coach Michael Foster, proud
of his team’s performance, commented, “The boys followed the
game plan to a ‘T’ and when
things did break down for a few
minutes in the second half, they
settled down and got back on top
with good fundamental basketball.”
Senior and Captain, Quadry Anderson won the game MVP, due to
his masterful defensive work on
MacDuffie’s dominating 6’9’’ center, Kerem Kanter. Kanter scored
15, Quadry frustrated Kanter by
holding him to 15 points less than
the last time the two teams met.
For Senior Captain Quadry, the
game and season were a sweet
payoff for multiple years of hard
work and dedication.
Following their dramatic run to the NEPSAC
Class D Basketball Championship, members of
the Owls’ Boys Varsity Basketball team have been
acknowledged by the league for their outstanding
athletic achievement.
Sixth Form Co-Captain Quadry Anderson was
voted Finals MVP for his determined play.
Unique McLean, a 2nd Form student from Brooklyn, NY, was recognized as a first team all league MVP Unique McLean
selection for his outstanding play. Teammate
and first year, 3rd form student Jabari Noel from
Brooklyn, NY was awarded second team all league
selection for his efforts.
Of most significance however, was the award of
League Player of the Year to Unique McLean.
Hoosac is not only honored by their athletic
achievement, but also by their display of professionalism and sportsmanship. Congratulations

The Hoosac Boys’ Basketball
team defeated The MacDuffie
School Mustangs on Sunday,
March 4th in the New England
Prep School Athletic Council
(NEPSAC) Class D Championship
Game, 64-57.
Seeded third in the 8-team tournament, The Owls had to wait to
begin their playoff season with a
one-day delay due to inclement
weather. On Thursday, March1st,
Hoosac first faced and breezed
by the Highlanders of Chase Collegiate of Waterbury, CT with a
home game in the Quarterfinals ,
80-53.
With little time to prepare, The
Owls next travelled to face the
second seeded Bancroft School
Bulldogs of Worcester, MA in the
Semifinal on Friday, March 2nd.
The Owls played a solid all-around
game, coming home with a 57-47
victory to reach Sunday’s final
against #1 seed and undefeated in
Class D, MacDuffie School.
From the opening tip, Hoosac
controlled the pace of the first
half of the game and went into
the locker room with a 32-29 lead.

A Slippery Slope
Austin McCroskie was voted by
the faculty as being Hoosac Student of the Week for the week of
February 12th, 2012. Austin is
a 6th form student from Texas
who is at Hoosac for his 3rd year.
Known and appreciated by most
for being the bell-ringer, there's
more to Austin than letting us
know when class begins.
Austin's family owns an Alpaca
farm in Texas, where he was
home-schooled before he came
to Hoosac. "It did not really work
out, so when I came to Hoosac,
I was already behind. I had very
good grades and just wanted to
make up that time." Austin said.

has become known as one of Hoosac’s campus photographers, as
she has taken many of the photos for the schools yearbook and
newspaper.
Alice is also making her mark
on the athletic field, becoming a
goalie on the Girls Lacrosse team.
We are looking forward to big
things from her this Spring!

- Week of February 26, 2012 Haylee Manktelow has been
awarded Student of the Week for
her outstanding performance in
and out of the classroom. Haylee,
a 4th former from Salem, NY is in
her second year at Hoosac.
While this is Haylee’s first
Student of the Week award, it is
something that she’s been working toward since her arrival at
Hoosac. Her suggestion to other
students looking to get Student of
the Week is to be a leader in the
classroom, be polite and helpful
to your peers and teachers, and to
work hard.
Haylee’s strategy has paid off
-- Faculty and Staff have all no-
ticed her outstanding work ethic,
her willingness to help, and her
excellence in the classroom. Haylee has also been very helpful in
tutoring other students.
Additionally, Haylee is one of
the more active students outside
the classroom. She is a contibutor to the yearbook and is a key
member of both the Girls Soccer
and Basketball teams. Haylee has
also been named as a Captain of
this year’s Girls Lacrosse team.
As for her long-term plans, Haylee hopes to pursue a career in
criminology, perhaps as either a
forensic examiner or as a criminal
lawyer. She also hopes to attend

an ivy league school upon graduating from Hoosac.
In her spare time, Haylee enjoys
playing sports and creative writing. Congratulations Haylee on

voted for Yaqin “Alice” Jin, a Fifth
former, to be Student of the Week
for the week of Febuary 19th,
2012. Alice Jin is a returning student from China. “My parents
picked Hoosac for me because
they liked it. Teachers are very
kind and the environment is pretty good,” stated Alice.

Yaqin “Alice” Jin

A Hoosac ski trail -- Fact or fiction? This may come as a surprise to
most students but Hoosac does indeed have a small ski trail. One such
student, 4th Former Yiwen “Evan” Chen, was surprised to learn that
such a facility was on campus, “No, I had no idea we have a ski hill,”
which is the same response of many new students this year.
Throughout it’s history, the ski slope has been shrouded in mystery
and controversy. As one of the very few schools (and perhaps the only
one) to have a small ski slope right on campus, the hill has been tucked
away behind Lavino and Tibbits since it was built in 1971. For such a
large campus feature, investigating the history of the slope proves more
difficult than it would seem. Most of the people who had direct experience or knowledge of the slope are no longer on campus. Here is what
is widely known:
The slope came into being from an anonymous donation from a family whose student was attending Hoosac at the time. Their child was
apparently an avid skier and the donation of the slope was made on
the condition that the gift remained anonymous. From the beginning,
the slope was problematic as it was both costly to run and difficult to
maintain. Because of these facts, sometime in the early 80’s the lift
mechanism was sold off, rendering the slope even less usable. The sale
of the lift was very controversial and many alumni and friends of Hoosac eventually cried out for the replacement of the lift.
In 2003, then Headmaster Richard Lomuscio responded to these requests by purchasing the exact same type of lift mechanism that had
previously been sold off. The Hoosac Ski Slope was once again operational, pleasing many Hoosac Trustees, Alumni and students alike. But
the grooming problem remained.
The slope itself is fairly steep and remains unkempt during the green
seasons. When an ample winter did come to Hoosac, the snow tended
to be very deep, impeding the progress of skiers. Often the die-hard
skiers would side step up and down the hill, attempting to pack the
snow enough to provide clean runs. This often proved to be more work
than it was worth. And in seasonable winters like the last couple, not
enough snow fell to cover the relatively rough terrain of the slope. The
slope remained unused -- unknown to some, forgotten to others.
For such a remarkable campus resource, many feel that it is extremely
unfortunate that a suitable use cannot be found for the slope. It seems
that with a small investment, perhaps a snowmobile and a groomer to
drag behind it, the grooming problem could finally be solved, making
the slope a tremendous asset to Hoosac’s winter sportsmen. Of course,
that also assumes that Mother Nature will cooperate – something that
she hasn’t done very often. But either way, once and for all, the great
minds at and associated with Hoosac should brainstorm to figure out
how to turn such an incredible resource into a true asset, making it an
attraction for all Hoosac students. The slope needs to be rescued from
obscurity!
Austin is active in campus life,
having recently organized the Xbox tournament that was held in
the auditorium several weekends
ago. "Congratulationss to Ryan
Allen and Victor De Vega on winning, and congratulations also to
the second place winners, Jasn
Rodgers and Blake Barnhill." Austin said.
Austin said a lot has changed
at Hoosac during the three years
he has gone here, and that a lot of
improvements and additions had
been made. "When I come back
to the school in 40 years, I wonder
what it will look like," said Austin.

Damani Guscott ‘14 was chosen
Student of the Week for the week
of March 5th, 2012. The first year,
4th Form student from Wappingers Falls, NY has made his mark
with the Hoosac faculty due to his
maturity, academic performance
and pleasant attitude.
When asked why he choose to
attend Hoosac, Damani stated
that he felt like he needed to get
his grades up and felt that Hoosac
was the best school to help him
achieve that goal.
As for how he felt about being
selected Student of the Week,
Damani added, “I was a little surprised but I tried really hard to get
Student of the Week.” Damani’s
hard work has definitely paid off
as he has left a great impression
on the Faculty.
Damani is also a member of
Hoosac’s Varisty Boys Basketball
team. His contributions in the
Center position helped the team
win the Division D championship
on Sunday, March 4th, 2012
