The look on your dog’s face as she meets you at the door, her tail wagging so hard that the back half of her body wags too. The satisfied purr from your cat as he settles into your lap or next to you on the couch. If you’ve felt that, then you understand why PetSmart Charities® is here and why we strive to provide funding that can change the situation for pets, both today and tomorrow. We work to develop new programs and enhance our existing services that save the lives of homeless pets. It’s why we partner with more than 2,000 animal-welfare groups across the United States who all share our vision – a lifelong, loving home for every pet. Today, an estimated 8 million pets enter shelters nationally. While approximately half will be adopted, 4 million will never experience the joy of a loving home. PetSmart Charities endeavors to enhance our adoption programs so that more pets can meet their matches and spend more time on a couch and less time in a kennel. We extend a helping hand to those pets in need so that they can get out of bad situations – either natural or man-made. And we provide funding and educational opportunities to professionalize the field so that we can all work together toward our shared goal of lifelong, loving homes for every pet. In 2010, we expanded our adoption initiatives to help save even more lives. We kicked off a new community adoption program that brings awareness to adoptable pets in local communities. The program was a triumph, with 21 events during the year helping more than 3,300 pets find their new homes. In fact, with our community adoption events and our four National Adoption Weekends, along with our every day adoption program in all PetSmart® stores, we helped 391,760 pets find homes. That’s one pet placed in a home every 39 seconds that a PetSmart Charities Adoption Center is open. One of our biggest accomplishments of the year was the creation and opening of our very first PetSmart Charities enhanced adoption center. By partnering with government entities and humane societies who have high pet intake and a great need, we offer these groups additional adoption space in-store and resources that can help even more pets. Our first enhanced adoption center opened in Fort Worth, Texas in May 2010, in partnership with the City of Fort Worth Animal Care & Control and a group of local philanthropists, and the results are amazing. Not only did the shelter, for the first time ever, place of all its adoptable pets during the grand opening weekend, but since then, adoptions have increased 119 percent and the shelter is no longer euthanizing for space. We knew immediately that this was a model for the rest of the nation and we set out to open even more of these centers. In January, we partnered with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control in Arizona to open two PetSmart Charities adoption centers in the Phoenix-metro area: one in a PetSmart store and another in a mall. Results have been strong and we anticipate expanding this lifesaving model to other communities around the country. Ending euthanasia requires many strategies, including four wheels and a big truck. Our Rescue Waggin’ program is helping dogs and puppies find the homes they deserve. In 2010, 9,219 dogs took the rides of their lives aboard one of our four Rescue Waggin’ vehicles. This program transports dogs and puppies from overcrowded areas where they face euthanasia to locations where they are more likely to be adopted – and most are adopted within just three days! The program has transported 43,575 dogs state to state since its inception in 2004. We continue to lead the field in spay/neuter efforts nationwide. We provided nearly $5 million in funding for spay/neuter programs and clinic openings or expansions. Our two highimpact grant categories – targeted and free-roaming cat spay/neuter – provided funding to 117 organizations during the year, which will help reduce the number of pets entering shelters and facing euthanasia. We also partnered with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®) and each pledged $2.6 million to Humane Alliance to increase training for affordable spay/ neuter services across the country. Our efforts in this area will result in more than 860,000 spay/neuter surgeries being performed annually by 2018. Philip L. Francis Chairman of the Board PetSmart Charities, Inc. In our efforts to make tomorrow even brighter for pets, we spent much of 2010 planning a large-scale social movement, People Saving Pets™, which we launched in two communities in early 2011. This unique initiative celebrates the joy adopted pets bring to our lives, engages the public in the solution, unites animal-welfare organizations toward a common goal and ultimately moves us closer to a day when every pet is ensured a lifelong, loving home. Look forward to hearing more about People Saving Pets in your community next year. Lastly, we want to express our sincere appreciation to all of you for your generous donations and involvement in helping us save homeless pets. Whether you’re an individual, a corporation or an animal-welfare organization, it takes all of us to solve this problem and we thank you for joining us in this quest. Susana M. Della Maddalena Executive Director PetSmart Charities, Inc. Without the generous support of our donors, we wouldn’t be able to enhance and create our programs that save the lives of homeless pets. Kemba Marshall adopts two dogs during the Phoenix Community Adoption Event at the PetSmart headquarters in Arizona. Saving Lives At PetSmart Charities®, our principal focus is saving the lives of homeless pets. Our vision is a lifelong, loving home for every pet, and we strive to reach this by partnering with thousands of animal-welfare organizations across the nation. We know that an estimated 8 million pets enter shelters each year, and that about half must be euthanized. Animal-welfare organizations have a desperate need for more resources to increase adoption numbers and help even more pets find the homes that they deserve. Without the help of PetSmart Charities and individuals across the country who donate and support our work, so many shelters and rescue groups would not have the resources to do this. Thanks to our in-store adoption program, adoption events, community outreach and expanded marketing efforts, PetSmart Charities is improving adoption rates across the country in an effort to enrich the lives of both people and pets. Why Adoptions are Important “I think we overlook the hard work the adoption partners do to prepare the pets for adoptions in the stores and how much hard work it takes to make the adoption program a success. As store employees, we get to see the reward and the joy in the pet parents’ faces when they go home with their new family member. I’m grateful to PetSmart Charities for working hard to create an adoption program that makes that commitment possible.” – Mark Rogers, store manager South Oklahoma City PetSmart store host of two “Midnight Woofness” community adoption events Jere Holland adopts a puppy during the National Adoption Weekend in Fort Worth, Texas. Enhanced Adoption Centers In 2010, we began a program designed to increase pet adoptions by providing additional space in PetSmart® stores to house dogs and cats 24-hours a day in new, enhanced adoption centers. These in-store adoption centers are supported by public donations and enable shelters and humane societies to take in additional adoptable pets. PetSmart Charities® is working with organizations that have high intake of pets and limited resources to find homes for them, making it a winwin situation for both the pets and the partner organization. Plus, the pets are housed in a pet-friendly venue, giving them even higher chances of finding a forever home. We’ve seen such amazing results from the first centers opened that PetSmart Charities plans to continue to raise funds to open enhanced adoption centers in select PetSmart® stores across the nation in 2011. The first enhanced adoption center grand opened in May 2010 in Fort Worth, Texas, in partnership with the City of Fort Worth Animal Care and Control. City officials joined PetSmart Charities staff and board members to celebrate the grand opening during the National Adoption Weekend. Overall, the change has been dramatic for the City of Fort Worth. Since April, more than 2,300 pets have been adopted from both the shelter and the PetSmart Charities adoption center, a 119 percent increase over the same period in 2009. From the PetSmart Charities adoption center alone, 1,348 pets have found new homes. PetSmart Charities funded 100 percent of the build-out costs, and the city staffs the center, which is open seven days a week and houses up to 50 adoptable dogs, puppies, cats and kittens at a time. A donor group funds the operational costs of the center. The Fort Worth adoption center is receiving a lot of national attention, too. In fact, an October episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show focused on how PetSmart Charities, PetSmart® and the City of Fort Worth are collaborating to save the lives of pets. In January 2011, two similar centers, one in a PetSmart store and one in a mall, opened in the metro-Phoenix area in partnership with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control. These two centers will help save the lives of more than 2,600 pets in Maricopa County, Arizona each year. Virginia Smith and her daughter Miranda take home Tom the cat during the National Adoption Weekend in Scottsdale, Arizona. National Adoption Weekends PetSmart Charities® knows that getting the word out about adoptable pets gives them a better chance at finding lifelong, loving homes. By holding four National Adoption Weekends throughout the year, we are giving pets that chance. The events include national media outreach and support as well as increased adoption rewards for participating animal-welfare organizations. Additionally, animal-welfare groups are given the opportunity to expand their adoption space into the parking lots of select stores, where they can give even more pets the opportunity to find new families. With more than 200 parking lot events held during the four National Adoption Weekends, 2010 proved to be a record-breaking year. A total of 68,883 pets found homes during the four weekends alone, a 3.4 percent increase over the same events in 2009. The first three national adoption events in 2010 were sponsored by Hill’s® Science Diet® Brand and PetSmart®. The November event was sponsored by Purina® Pro Plan®, Tidy Cats® and PetSmart®. Community Adoption Events To augment the four National Adoption Weekends, PetSmart Charities® ramped up its adoption program with a series of Community Adoption Events. These events marked the largest-ever adoption push in PetSmart Charities’ history and were aimed at generating awareness about adoptable pets in local communities and helping those pets get the increased attention that they needed to find homes. Proudly sponsored by Purina® Pro Plan® and Tidy Cats®, these events were held in cities throughout the U.S. on 20 weekends during the year. The result? An incredible 3,352 pets’ lives saved! People line up to adopt during one of the Oklahoma City Community Adoption Events. Called “Midnight Woofness,” these events ran from midnight on Friday straight through to Sunday at 5 p.m. During these two events, 878 pets found new homes. Why I Adopted “I wanted to adopt an older dog because I didn’t get to spend time with my first dog when he got older, and I wanted to give that chance to another pet. Dobby was about the third dog we saw during the event, and we knew he was the one right away. These pets deserve the chance to have a home and adopting is the right thing to do.” – Trisha Randall, new pet parent to Dobby, a 10-year-old Chihuahua who was adopted during the Community Adoption Event held at PetSmart’s corporate headquarters in October 2010. The Rescue Waggin’ ® vehicle taking more dogs on the ride of their lives. The Rescue Waggin’ Program ® As one of our most talked-about initiatives, the PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin’ program has been steadily gaining ground and saving more lives since its inception in 2004. Through the end of our 2010 fiscal year, 43,575 dogs and puppies have taken the rides of their lives aboard a Rescue Waggin’ vehicle. This program saves the lives of adoptable dogs and puppies at overcrowded shelters where they have little chance of finding homes and would likely be euthanized by transporting them to shelters where they are in demand. In 2010, Rescue Waggin’ vehicles transported 9,219 dogs and puppies from areas of high homeless-pet overpopulation to shelters in areas where they were able to find homes within three days, on average. The program also provides capacity-building and spay/neuter grants to help shelters improve programs that will ultimately help save even more lives. How the Rescue Waggin’ Program Makes a Difference ® “ We have had the great fortune to transport more than 900 dogs and puppies through the Rescue Waggin’ program. As a result, for the first time in the history of the shelter, all adoptable pets have been able to find homes. This relief has enabled us to focus more on our spay/ neuter programs – and in turn impact the critical pet overpopulation problem in our county. Thank you PetSmart Charities!” – Dawnette Brady President, Board of Directors Washington County SPCA Dr. Debra Moon sterilizes a cat at Clinico’s Pico Rivera clinic in California. Funding for the Future Combined with our efforts to help pets find homes through adoption, PetSmart Charities® also provides spay/neuter support to help solve the problem of homeless-pet overpopulation. Because we understand that adoption alone is not the solution, we strive to provide vital funding around spay/neuter initiatives, which can help reduce shelter intake and reduce the number of pets who must be euthanized. This funding comes from the generous support of our donors. Every year in the U.S., approximately 8 million pets enter shelters, and about half are euthanized. Spaying or neutering a pet today helps save lives in the future, and PetSmart Charities is working to expand spay/neuter services, increase the number of sustainable surgical slots available and provide training for more veterinarians in low-cost, high-volume surgical techniques. In 2010, through our high-impact spay/neuter grants, PetSmart Charities provided $4,427,583 in funding for spay/neuter efforts nationwide, resulting in 103,021 surgeries. Additionally, PetSmart Charities provided $1,637,900 for 22 clinic openings and expansions, which resulted in creating capacity for more than 161,314 surgical slots nationwide. A cat reaches out to a volunteer while she waits for a forever home. Humane Alliance Funding In May 2010, PetSmart Charities® and The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®) announced a pledge of $2.6 million from each organization to Humane Alliance. This pledge was part of a five-year commitment totaling $5.2 million to increase high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter services across the United States and prevent the births of millions of pets for whom there are no homes. Humane Alliance in Asheville, North Carolina seeks to mentor organizations to open and operate strategically placed low-cost, high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinics across the nation. Humane Alliance operates a National Spay/ Neuter Response Team, which has already trained 86 organizations to replicate this model. This funding will help 80 low-cost, high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinics open across the U.S. These new clinics, combined with the nearly 70 Humane Alliance clinics already open, will provide up to 800,000 sustainable spay/neuter surgical slots, preventing an estimated 11 million pet births through 2013. The $5.2 million in funding will be distributed during the next five years to also help create thousands of sustainable spay/neuter surgical slots through capacity-building grants and training programs for veterinarians and clinic staff. Anna Hernandez helps a dog recovering from surgery at Clinico’s Pico Rivera clinic. Veterinary Education and Externship PetSmart Charities also funds a surgical education program for veterinarians and veterinary students at the Humane Alliance that offers first-hand surgical experience in a nationally recognized high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter training center in Asheville, North Carolina. To date, 106 private veterinarians and 17 externs have been trained. Pediatric Spay/Neuter DVD Education in surgical techniques can make the difference in reducing the number of pets born without homes. To help further that cause, PetSmart Charities® funded the production of an educational video by Humane Alliance that details the procedures for performing spay/neuter surgeries on puppies and kittens as small as 2 pounds and as young as 6-8 weeks old. The video, Pediatric Spay and Neuter: A Functional Teaching Guide, is available for free download at www.humanealliance.org for all veterinarians and animalwelfare groups across the nation. Groups can also order a copy for the cost of shipping and handling through the website. High-Impact Grantee Forum PetSmart Charities worked with grant recipients to identify multiple areas of interest for a spay/neuter forum, held in October 2010 at the PetSmart® headquarters. Thirty animal-welfare organizations that received free-roaming cat or targeted spay/neuter grants from PetSmart Charities were invited to Phoenix to attend and learn about motivating constituents toward a common goal; working with the media and writing basic press releases; finding, motivating and keeping volunteers; and making programs financially sustainable. The groups were able to work together to share ideas, challenges and successes, which will help the groups be more successful with their grant funds and advance their programs to the next level. “In addition to this program helping to save lives of adoptable dogs, I would really like people to realize that pit-bull terriers are just dogs, like any other dog. They’re fun-loving, loyal goofballs that have the same basic needs and require the same responsible ownership that other dogs do.” – Jamie Healy manager of Shelter Partners for Pit Bulls Best Friends Animal Society Best Friends Animal Society Funding In August 2010, PetSmart Charities® granted $240,000 to Best Friends Animal Society for an innovative program called Shelter Partners for Pit Bulls, which is designed to encourage responsible pet ownership, increase adoptions, reduce euthanasia and improve the public’s perception of pit-bull terriers and similar dogs. With this grant funding, Best Friends strives to raise public awareness about the pit bull terrier breed and promote adoptions of the hundreds of pit bull terriers surrendered at shelters each month. The grant supports pilot programs in five shelters across the country: •Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter in Baltimore, Maryland •County of San Diego Animal Services in Carlsbad, California •Hillsborough County Animal Services in Tampa, Florida •Rancho Cucamonga Animal Care and Adoption Center in California •Washington Humane Society in Washington, DC The grant from PetSmart Charities also funds local coordinators for all five shelters to oversee the programs in the communities, which includes kennel enrichment for shelter dogs, community education and training programs, creation or support of foster and transition home programs, adoption and other outreach events, targeted spay/ neuter efforts, post-adoption support and educational opportunities for shelter staff. Shelter Partners for Pit Bulls coordinators are also assisted by groups of volunteers called “Pit Crews” who do everything from walking dogs to helping out at adoption and other events or providing basic obedience training. Each of the five shelters uses different techniques to help increase pit bull adoptions and promote the breed in the local communities. In Rancho Cucamonga, many of the pit bulls in the shelter were long-term residents, so the local coordinator created videos of each dog to post on the shelter’s website. The top 20 longest term residents were featured in the videos, and after posting, 18 of the dogs found new homes. The videos show off the dogs’ personalities and can be shared among family and friends and have led to many pit bull adoptions in the shelter, including three very special ones. One family was inspired to adopt two very long-term resident pit bulls, Rosalda and Quaker, and encourage their family friend to adopt another long-term pit, Angelina. For two of the shelters, playgroups have proven successful. In Baltimore, taking the dogs out for playgroups offers enrichment and an opportunity for potential adopters to see the dogs in action. One dog, Happy Gilmore, was adopted on the spot when his new parent came to visit him during a playgroup. In Washington, DC, more people can meet their perfect matches when they can see the dogs’ true personalities during play. “ Neighborhood CATS and PetSmart Charities were instrumental in getting us started with our trap-neuter-return program. But we realized that spaying or neutering cats one day a week wasn’t enough. We applied for grant funding from PetSmart Charities and were able to expand our program tremendously.” ® Cary Lieberman executive director of Greenhill Humane Society Grant Success Making Grant Funding Work: Greenhill Humane Society’s TNR Program The Greenhill Humane Society in Eugene, Oregon is improving the lives of homeless cats and kittens in their community through a successful trapneuter-return (TNR) program. The program originally kicked off with funding from Neighborhood CATS and PetSmart Charities® and offered spay/neuter services one day a week with the help of local veterinarians who volunteered their services. In early 2010, Greenhill Humane Society was awarded $36,000 under PetSmart Charities’ targeted spay/ neuter grant program. By focusing on two targeted ZIP codes – one in Eugene and one in Springfield – and initiating a program to spay/neuter cats in those areas, Greenhill Humane Society was able to make a considerable impact on cat intake numbers in its shelter. The TNR program worked with low-income areas that needed the most help with free-roaming cats in larger housing complexes. “There were a lot of people feeding the cats, but they had no resources to get them spayed or neutered,” said Lieberman. “With the funding from PetSmart Charities, we worked with apartment managers and residents to provide services on a much larger scale, and brought cats through our regular clinic so it wasn’t just one day a week.” By the end of the project, cat intake to the Greenhill Humane Society dropped 26 percent in one ZIP code, while kitten intake dropped 28 percent. “We met our goal to provide 800 spay/neuter surgeries,” continued Lieberman. “Our next step is to expand our reach within the same ZIP codes and possibly to the next highest problem area.” To increase the program’s success, Greenhill Humane Society also provided education and coaching for caretakers and residents about feeding cat colonies, the benefits of TNR and how to successfully manage a colony. “We wouldn’t have been able to do this without the funding from PetSmart Charities,” Lieberman said. “I’m so impressed with PetSmart Charities and the ability to get a grant that’s large enough to address the problem. In the past, it felt like freeroaming cats were at the bottom of the funding barrel. PetSmart Charities helped change all that for us.” A kitten receives care after being rescued from an alleged hoarding situation in Pennsylvania. Providing a Helping Hand Emergency Relief PetSmart Charities® provides emergency relief grant funding to assist pets affected by large-scale natural disasters; man-made emergencies or pet hoarding rescues; animal victims of violence or abuse; and disaster-related capital repairs. Additionally, the PetSmart Charities Emergency Relief Waggin’® program assists the animal victims of natural and man-made disasters nationwide. The six Emergency Relief Waggin’ vehicles are each stocked with 16 tons of supplies valued at $60,000, including pet food, wire crates, litter, bowls and leashes. The vehicles also include items such as fans, a generator, tents, a battery charger and lights to aid the animal rescuers on the scene. In 2010, PetSmart Charities provided more than $830,000 in emergency-relief grant funding and supplies to assist nearly 24,000 pets. The Emergency Relief Waggin’ vehicles were deployed to three emergencies, assisting 937 pets. Unique Rescue in 2010 Tranquility Trail Animal Sanctuary in Scottsdale, Arizona, was contacted about a situation in Phoenix in which more than 100 pet rabbits, including numerous pregnant females, were found outside in burrows, trying to escape the blazing August heat (temperatures in Phoenix average 103 degrees but can reach as high as 116 degrees). PetSmart Charities® provided the Sanctuary with a $3,500 emergency grant, along with $3,000 worth of much-needed food, hay, litter, litter pans and carriers. Many of these “backyard bunnies” have already been adopted or are being fostered following their recovery from spay/neuter surgery. How PetSmart Charities Emergency Relief Makes a Difference ® “PetSmart Charities has been a valuable partner to the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response Department. 2010 was an incredible year, with more than 3,500 animals rescued from abusive situations across the country. The resources provided by PetSmart Charities have been crucial to making this possible. I look forward to working together in 2011.” – Tim Rickey senior director, Field Investigations and Response ASPCA Anti Cruelty Group PetWalk supporters brought their dogs (and other pets) out for a great day of walking to save homeless pets in Tempe, Arizona. Engaging the Public Phoenix PetWalk™ In February 2010, PetSmart Charities® held its second annual PetWalk in Arizona. An estimated 5,000 people and at least 8,000 pets, along with more than 50 animal-welfare agencies including shelters, rescue groups and animal-control agencies from around the state participated, making PetWalk one of the largest pet-themed events in the Phoenix area. The event was presented by Purina® Pro Plan® and took place at Tempe Town Lake in Tempe, Arizona. Participants raised more than $375,000. Animal-welfare organizations kept 100 percent of the funds they raised; remaining proceeds benefitted the programs of PetSmart Charities. Because of the success of the Arizona PetWalk, PetSmart Charities is planning to increase its PetWalk presence in cities across the United States in coming years, with PetWalks being planned in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Fort Worth, Texas in 2011. PetWalks benefit local animal-welfare groups with funds raised, and help spread the message about ending pet homelessness to a broader audience of pet-lovers and the public. Dogs weren’t the only ones to enjoy the Tempe PetWalk! More than 5,000 people came out to enjoy the day at PetWalk. Spreading the Word Actively engaging the public can help spread knowledge and information to people who value pets and want to be more involved. To do this, PetSmart Charities® reaches out to new audiences with media relations, social media, special events, conferences and educational materials to help fight homelesspet overpopulation. Reaching a New Audience In January 2011, PetSmart Charities sponsored and attended the North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC). The event was attended by thousands of veterinarians, technicians and students who could obtain information about the educational programs PetSmart Charities offers for the veterinary community. PetSmart Charities also sponsored an all-day wet lab about pediatric spay/neuter techniques, which attendees filled to capacity. Conferences like NAVC help PetSmart Charities reach a new professional audience that can benefit from the programs and information about practices in the animal-welfare community. Adding New Resources PetSmart Charities® is the leading funder in companion animal-welfare efforts nationwide, and we strive to supply our animal-welfare partners with the most up-to-date, relevant information and resources to help them reach their own goals around saving homeless pets. To do that, PetSmart Charities provides the public with educational information about pet homelessness, spay/neuter initiatives, adoption opportunities and the latest news in animal welfare. Online Grant Application System To help streamline the grant application process, PetSmart Charities® upgraded to an online system for its two U.S. programs – free-roaming cat and targeted spay/neuter grant applications. In coming months, PetSmart Charities will continue to migrate its other applications to the online system. The change was made to improve the grant application process and provide more conveniences for animalwelfare partners. A survey of the first online grant applicants was overwhelmingly positive, with nearly 80 percent of applicants rating the system as easy to navigate and more than 62 percent saying that the online application process (login, returning to the system, placing the application) was easy. New Website In the summer of 2010, PetSmart Charities® launched a new website designed to educate the public and benefit animal-welfare organizations and the pets in their care. The site – www.petsmartcharities.org – includes information for shelters, rescue groups and other agencies that work on behalf of animals in need. It also provides news, information and donation opportunities for the general public. Site visitors can quickly link to information about PetSmart Charities’ offerings, including adoption event dates and the adoptable pet locator, emergency relief, press releases, the Rescue Waggin’® program, grants, newsletters and publications, webinars and other resources. Information about spay/neuter grants and how to start a high-volume clinic is also available for animal-welfare organizations. PetSmart Charities, Inc. PetSmart Charities was given a Four-Star Rating by Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent evaluator of charities, for efficient and effective financial management. 2010 marked the eighth consecutive year that PetSmart Charities, Inc. received this Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator. Why I donate to PetSmart Charities Before I had the opportunity to work at PetSmart, I applauded the organization’s spay/neuter and adoption efforts through PetSmart Charities. When I was offered the chance to work at PetSmart, I jumped at the chance. When we decided to add a new member of the family, we knew we wanted to adopt and started scouring the Phoenix area for a puppy to call our own. We found one at a local PetSmart store through HALO Animal Rescue and he is perfect. Shortly after we got Koa (a black lab/German short hair mix) we had the opportunity to join the Southwest Urban Search and Rescue Team through the Glendale and Peoria Fire Departments. This is a group of volunteers who train their dogs for search work during urban disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, 9/11 and the Oklahoma City bombing. Koa has been working very hard for the last year and we hope to be a certified search and rescue team within a year. He loves his ® job and is very good at it. I am a proud mom every time I see him improve in both obedience and scent work. He is truly an amazing dog. He was once lost, and we found him. Now he spends his time learning how to help and find others. Without the support and efforts of the P.A.U.S.E. (PetSmart Associates United Against Euthanasia) campaign, I would never have met Koa and been able to teach him to help so many others. Neither adoption was planned, but we fell in love with both cats when we met them. We first saw Constance during a regular shopping trip. We couldn’t stop thinking about her, even though we didn’t think we were ready to adopt. Later, my husband returned to the store to fill out the paperwork and then presented this little ball of fur to me at home. Four months later we received a call about a cat who had been adopted and then returned to Greene County Humane Society. His name was Samson, and he just wanted a good home. As we were driving to the PetSmart store, my husband said to me, “Now, you know we aren’t adopting another cat, right?” I agreed that we were just going to look, but when we got there and saw Samson getting his belly rubbed by a volunteer, I fell in love with him. My husband ® made the decision to adopt and within hours of having him with us, we knew this was his forever home. Constance and Samson are absolute love bugs who have brought so much joy and laughter to our home. We want to thank PetSmart Charities for all they do to help these homeless kitties and thank all the adoption partners like Greene County Humane Society for their dedication to finding good homes for pets. I contribute monthly to PetSmart Charities and my company matches me dollar for dollar. Also, we have included PetSmart Charities in our estate planning so that they can continue to do the job that they now do to help homeless kitties like Connie and Samson find forever homes. Without our help this work could not continue. Henrietta (Henri) and John Boggs Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Angels PetSmart Charities could not achieve success without the corporate sponsors and donors who commit their financial assistance to the cause of saving the lives of homeless pets, as well as the donors who contribute in PetSmart stores across the nation. ® ® (Donors of $1,000+) Cynthia Bacmeister Carol Daughtry Judith Banon Lawrence Del Santo Byron Bartley Susana Della Maddalena Dawn Bates Herbert Baum Donald Beaver Kimberly Beres Cynthia Biestek Lindi Biggi Vanessa Blackwell Nancy Breeze Steve Bryan Jill Campbell Sue Cardey Hope Carpenter Robert Carr Bill Castle Cathy Spencer & Scott Narris Family Fund Mary Beth Cermak-Bell Dennis Cortez Gary Cosay Jason Crawford Sheri Doi Willie Duckworth Robin Dunbar Charlotte Dyson Karl Estes Sean Fernandes Mark Finke Jennifer Forsman Philip Francis Leslie Fraser Gold Helga Fuller Cathy Fulton Heidi Giger (Estate) Lilian Giraldo Julie Gordon Richard Gray Linda Gricius Susan Gulig Kenneth Hall Matt & M.C.
