On the Town with Village Theatre Thank you for joining us for this celebration. With your support over the last 30 years, Village Theatre has become a leading producer of professional musical theatre in the Pacific Northwest and has grown into one of the Puget Sound region’s largest theatres. Our Mainstage currently has more than 18,000 subscribers, among the highest of any theatre in all of Washington State, and an audience of more than 219,000 people enjoy our shows each year. We wouldn’t be here tonight without our loyal audiences and supporters. Whether you subscribe to our season or buy occasional single tickets, whether you donate to our Annual Fund or commit to a corporate sponsorship, whether you volunteer your time in our office, at our events, or on our committees and Board—you are a part of our family and community, and we are grateful for your participation and support. You are a vital part of our Village and you play a starring role in all we do. Tonight is more than just a celebration; it is a fundraiser to meet ambitious goals to keep our theatre growing strong. 100% of the funds raised from all of the auction items goes right back to the Theatre to support our programming. With your support, we will touch the lives of more than 54,000 young people and their families through our Youth Education programs, KIDSTAGE and Pied Piper. We will continue to contribute ground-breaking new works to the national musical theatre scene through Village Originals. And we will continue to bring you the high-quality production values and full-scale professional productions you have come to expect on our Mainstage. But none of this would be possible without you. A tip of the hat to you, our loyal subscribers, our donors, our friends. Thank you for all of your support. Robb Hunt Executive Producer Steve Tomkins Artistic Director 1 On the Town with Village Theatre MISSION The mission of Village Theatre is to remain a regionally recognized and nationally influential center of excellence in family theatre: • To promote a season of top quality productions; • To commission and produce new musicals that achieve national exposure; • To train young people in theatre skills for career opportunities and enriched lives; • To develop a broad-based appreciation for live theatre; • To promote positive values through art. PROGRAMS Mainstage: At the center of Village Theatre’s programs is the Mainstage season, which runs from September-July with 30 weeks of production in Issaquah and 20 weeks of production in Everett, with a current subscriber base of more than 18,000. Each season sees new productions of two musicals from the American musical theatre canon, two new musicals, and one play. The two musicals are drawn from both familiar repertoire and deserving, less-produced works, and are conceived anew by regionally and nationally accomplished directors. The two new musicals, representing the culmination of each year’s Village Originals programming, will be a world or regional premiere, or a vital second or third production of an important new work. The play selection looks to the repertoire for a drama, comedy, or classic, which speaks to the multiple generations in the Theatre’s audience. 2 On the Town with Village Theatre Village Originals: Village Theatre’s commitment to and reliance upon the continued vitality of the American musical theatre repertoire compel another important mission, one robustly supported by our core expertise and resources. That mission is the creation of new musical theatre works. Village Originals is a year-round program that has enabled the development of 85 new musicals, and as such, is dedicated to every stage of new musical development. Full productions (including a production in each Mainstage season and developmental productions at our First Stage facility), workshops, readings, seminars, Meet the Author events, and more make the program an exceptional opportunity for artists and audiences alike to engage with exciting new work. Youth Educations Programs: Village Theatre’s extensive and acclaimed Youth Education programs serve more than 54,000 young people annually and spring from the belief that a lifetime of theatre-going and an enduring appreciation for the art of live theatre must begin with fulfilling experiences in formative years. Our KIDSTAGE education program offers students the vital, unparalleled experience of creating live theatre of their own, through small-group intensive theatre classes taught by practicing theatre professionals, professionally directed and managed productions, and productions created entirely by students with the support of artist mentors. The Pied Piper program is dedicated to enriching the cultural lives of young people and supporting the classroom objectives of educators by bringing literature to life through professional performances for students, teachers, and families in the Puget Sound area. 3 On the Town with Village Theatre Village Theatre Board of Directors Derek Watanabe President Craig Watjen Vice President, Board Development John F Shaw Vice President, Fundraising Mark Davis Treasurer Gary Kneepkens Secretary Dan Anderson D. Here’s how it works: As you arrive at The Fairmont Olympic, go to the check-in tables at the entrance. We will swipe your credit card and keep a running tab of your auction purchases for the evening and will charge your card during the event. At the end of the evening, simply go to the check out counter and pick up your auction items and receipts. Auction Rules 1. Upon entry each guest will be given a bid card. To bid in the silent auction, simply write your bid number on the silent auction bid form. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card up high with the number toward the auctioneer. 2. A bid acknowledged by the live auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item. As well, in the silent auction, designation of the bid you have written by the silent auction official as the top bid is a legal contract to purchase that silent auction item. 3. Top bidders will be charged the full amount on the credit card number swiped upon check in. Payment in full is mandatory at the auction. 4. Auction items will be awarded to one purchaser only. The top bid amount for an auction item will not be split among bidders who may have agreed to pay a portion of the top bid amount. Bidders who wish to split the payment for an auction item must select an individual bidder to act as purchaser. This purchaser is then responsible for full payment to the Village Theatre and for collecting the auction item(s) or certificate(s). The purchaser is also responsible for collecting individual payments from the other bidders. 5. All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted. 6. We will gladly accept your payment by currency, personal check, and VISA, MasterCard, or American Express. Please make your check payable to Village Theatre. 9 On the Town with Village Theatre Silent Auction Rules 1. Items offered in the silent auction will have silent auction bid forms attached to them or on a table nearby. You may bid by simply writing your bid number on the form opposite the amount you want to bid. The opening bid and minimum raise has been pre-determined and listed on each bid sheet. We ask you to press hard, as you are making three copies. 2. You do not have to take the next available bid amount, but may skip ahead on the form to find the amount you really want to bid. The next bidder must bid a higher amount than you did to be successful. 3. If you wish to guarantee purchase of a particular item, put your bid number next to the amount listed in the “Guaranteed Purchase Price” section of the bid sheet. Once you write your bid number on the “Guaranteed Purchase” line, the bidding on that item is concluded. 4. You may bid in any silent auction section until the section is closed. Bidding for items in the silent auction sections will close at the times posted. The silent auction official will circle the top bid number and amount. You can see if you are the successful purchaser by looking at the copy of the silent auction bid form, which will be left after the section is closed.bid spotter can accept your bid. 5. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser of that live auction item. A bid acknowledged by the live auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase that item. 6. An auction volunteer will bring a bid sheet to the highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer. After signing the bid sheet with the bid amount, the bid sheet will be placed in your file until check out. 7. Unless otherwise noted, all goods and services must be claimed and used within one year of the auction date. 8. Village Theatre reserves the right to add or withdraw items to or from the auction without notice. 9. Runners will collect your items for you after check out. All items must be removed from the premises the evening of the auction unless other delivery methods are mutually agreed upon. 10. Those who wish to support Village Originals but cannot attend the Gala can still ‘Raise The Paddle’ and donate to this unique program. Bruce and Jolene have been longtime subscribers and generous supporters of Village Theatre. Through their family foundation, they support numerous causes focusing on programs that address the healthy development of young children and families. Village Theatre salutes Bruce and Jolene McCaw for their generosity and leadership as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary of artistic excellence as one of Puget Sound’s premiere arts organizations. 47 Live Auction Fund-a-Need Musical theatre, truly one of our most enduring indigenous art forms, has afforded generations of Americans timeless music, celebratory, virtuoso stage work, even profound, transformative drama. Village Theatre, one of the nation’s leading regional producers of musical theatre, is dedicated to the development of new musicals that achieve national exposure. The changing economics of Broadway have severely curtailed the development of new musicals on what was once their primary stage. And while new musicals do still arrive in New York, amid the revivals and spectacles, commercial producers are increasingly unwilling to accept the risks of developing, much less producing, new work. And now we see it is the regional theatres that have come to represent an enduring and ever growing interest in the entire American musical theatre repertoire—a repertoire which must continue to grow. Much as the responsibility for the development of playwrights and new American plays largely migrated, a few decades ago, from increasingly querulous commercial producers to more adventurous, diverse, and mission-driven regional theatres, so must the mantle of new musical development be picked up by theatres off the Broadway grid. Village Theatre represents one of the strongest and fastest-growing not-for-profit regional musical theatres, with a cadre of artists and a professional staff experienced in the production and marketing of musical theatre, so it’s a natural step for the Theatre to share this vital responsibility. Musicals developed in the Village Originals program already have enriched the musical theatre repertoire in America and around the world: Ford’s Theatre in Washington DC, Pittsburgh Public, Marriott Lincolnshire in Chicago, Taipei Theatre offBroadway, National Theatre of Taiwan, The Cutting Room, New York City, the York Theatre off-Broadway and London. 48 Live Auction Village Theatre exists and thrives as an ongoing testament to the strength and importance of musical theatre. Our Village Originals program represents a dedication to the genre’s continued growth and evolution, and a determination that America’s musical theatre will remain vibrant and relevant for generations to come. Here’s How Fund-a-Need Works: Auctioneer Brad Goode will call out funding levels of $10,000 $5,000, $2,500, $1,500, $1,000, $500, $250, $100 Please raise your paddles and help Village Theatre’s Village Originals program continue to flourish! 49 Live Auction ~ 23 ~ Walk-on Role in The Full Monty Ready for your close up?
