Additions to our extensive collection of modern Hebrew language films. They all have sub-titles in English. SOMEONE TO RUN WITH AVIVA MY LOVE YEAR ZERO TIME OUT THE JEWISH CENTURY ~ Yuri Slezkine ‘This masterwork of interpretative history begins with a bold declaration: The Modern Age is the Jewish Age – and we are all, to varying degrees, Jews.’ ‘One of the most innovative and intellectually stimulating books in Jewish studies in years…[An] idiosyncratic, fascinating and at times marvellously infuriating study of the evolution of Jewish cultural and political sensibility in the 20th century.’ Publishers Weekly. Winner of the 2005 National Jewish Book Award of the Jewish Book Council. www.makorlibrary.com JEWISH ROOTS IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN ECONOMY ~ Mendel Kaplan ‘Although there is literature about other immigrant groups who have contributed to the whole that is South Africa, little has been published about the Jews. Starting the story in the 17th century, Mendel Kaplan concentrates on those who pioneered a particular sector of industry or commerce or who made a unique contribution in some field in which other South Africans were engaged, including mining and life insurance.’ 39 POUNDS OF LOVE THE PERSISTENCE OF FAITH : religion, morality and society in a secular age ~ Jonathan Sacks ‘…the 1990 Reith Lectures appear prophetic now. Since that time, the resurgence of religion has caught us by surprise. The influence of the moral majority in the USA, the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the prevalence of religious parties in Israel, the renewed vigour of Catholicism….all run contrary to the notion that modernity and secularisation inevitably go hand in hand. Instead, religion has resurfaced and often appears to be not only powerful but menacing and threatening.’ BETRAYAL : France, the Arabs and the Jews ~ David Pryce-Jones MULTICULTURALISM AND THE JEWS ~ Sander L. Gilman ‘David Pryce-Jones has long been an indispensable guide to the realities of the Arab world, and now, with the chilling story he so brilliantly tells in “Betrayal”, he broadens the focus to encompass the role played by French perfidy in helping to create the threat to us all of political Islam.” Norman Podhoretz, editor-at-large of Commentary ‘Can the experience of diaspora Judaism serve as a useful model for Islam in today’s multicultural Europe? What is a multicultural ethnic? Other chapters look at specific figures…Albert Einstein, Franz Kafka, Israel Zangwill, Phillip Roth…to explore issues within Jewish identity. Throughout, Gilman pays keen attention to the ways in which contemporary literature – Chabon, Ozick, Zadie Smith, Jonathan Safran Foer, Gary Shteyngart – is taking the idea of Jewishness and multiculturalism into new arenas.’ OBSESSION : Radical Islam’s war against the West ~ DVD, US KLEZMER! : Jewish music from Old World to Our World ~ Henry Sapoznik [book and CD] ’A film abut the threat of Radical Islam to Western civilization. Using unique footage from Arab television, it reveals an “insider’s view” of the hatred the Radicals are teaching, their incitement of global jihad, and their goal of world domination. The film also traces the parallels between the Nazi movement of World War II, the Radicals of today, and the Western world’s response to both threats.’ ‘A fascinating story of survival against all odds, of a musical legacy so potent it can still be heard, despite assimilation and near annihilation. The scratchy, distant sound of early recordings bursts forth with such power that it has formed the soundtrack for an entirely new generation of performers, Jew and non-Jew alike, who have embraced and expanded the klezmer tradition.’ LION’S HONEY : the myth of Samson ~ David Grossman IM YESH GAN EDEN (BEAUFORT) ~ Ron Leshem [Hebrew] ‘…award-winning writer David Grossman takes on one of the most vivid and controversial characters in the Bible. Revisiting Samson’s famous battle with the lion, his many women and his betrayal by them all – including the only one he ever loved – Grossman gives us a provocative new take on the story and its climax…’ Available in both Hebrew and English. A story about the months before the IDF’s withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000 and winner of the 2006 Sapir Prize for literature. It focuses on the final weeks of the Israeli occupation of Beaufort Castle, a hilltop fortress dating back to the Crusades. A new movie based on this book has won the Berlin Film Festival. people of the book Did you know that every new book, CD and magazine acquired by Makor is funded by someone like you?
