ASCA Agility: NE Ohio’s Best Kept Agility Secret
By Jay Wootten
Having problems with start-line stays? How about
contacts? Does your dog get the zoomies at trials?
If you answered yes to any of these questions or if you
have other problems at agility trials, you need to know
about ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America)
Agility. It is the only venue locally that permits training
in the ring.
Take, for instance, my dog Breeze. She has pretty solid
start-line stays in practice, but ―wait‖ is a word she‘s
never heard before when we get to a trial. So I enter
ASCA trials put on by Buckeye Australian Shepherd Club
(BASC) in Washingtonville, and I tell the judge that I
might just work start-line stays instead of competing. We
get an ―E‖ (elimination), but I can have the full standard
course time in the ring (no toys or cookies) working on
stays in front of various obstacles. Where else can I work
on my problem in a trial setting? No where near here.
The Buckeye Club has been offering six Saturday and
Sunday trials a year at Four Seasons K9 Athlete Center;
the next one is November 19-20. The cost is reasonable:
$12 for Regular (―standard‖ in AKC talk) and $10 for
Gamblers and Jumpers. There are also special package
deals. You can even enter the same day as you run if you
pay a little more ($15 late entry fee).
Best of all, if you don‘t want to compete for titles, you do
not have to join or get a number—you can show For
Exhibition Only (FEO) for the same entry fee. If you
want to compete for titles, you need to join as a ―Service‖
member for one year ($10), and you need to pay a onetime registration fee of $10 for each dog you want to run.

Levels and Titles
ASCA offers Novice, Open, and Elite levels, and you can
enter at any level, even if you haven‘t titled. Say you run
in Excellent in AKC and you don‘t want to run Novice
courses in ASCA. No problem: enter Elite. Your
qualifying legs, if you have a tracking number, will first
be applied to your Novice title, then to your Open title,
and finally to your Elite title.
Junior Handler and Veterans divisions are offered.
Veterans is for dogs 7 years and over OR for handlers 60
or older or with a certified disability. Juniors may run 4‖
lower; veterans must run 4‖ lower than the dog measures.
Any venue‘s permanent jump height card is accepted as
proof of measurement. Any dog running lower than 16‖
must either have a jump height card or must be measured.
Heights are 8, 12, 16, 20, 20+ and optional 24 inches for
regular runs. Juniors and Veterans may jump 4, 8, 12, 16,
20, 20+. Juniors may opt for 24.
To earn a title, once you‘ve registered and received a
tracking number, you need 20 points (two clean runs or 3
―dirty‖ runs) in Gamblers and Jumpers and 30 points
(three clean runs or four ―dirty‖ runs) in Regular.
So come join me at the November 19 and 20th ASCA
trials at Four Seasons in Washingtonville. These are
usually small trials with lots of nice folks. As always,
workers are welcome!

New Gating Purchased
The Club has purchased 600‘ of new gating from Max
200. In order to save on the shipping cost, we are picking
it up at the IX Center trials in December. It is identical to
the ring gating that we use for the obedience and rally
trials. Once we receive the new gating, we will use the
trial gating that is currently stored in our attic for our
everyday gating. So, what are we going to do with the
old gating?..................... Details to follow
We are adding a new trial date for agility next year and
are going to have it at a new location. The city of Niles,
has built a fantastic athletic facility. Next August, we will
be able to hold a 2 ring trial in air conditioning in this
building. Check out the flyers in our building and online.
All other agility trials are still being held at Four Seasons
K9 Athlete Center.

 Debbie Harper who lost her Shelty, Bailey.
Tanglewood Bodacious Bailey
RN,NJP,NAP,CGC
Bred by Pamela Weber
2/21/2002--9/13/2011
Bailey did not have an easy
life. She had TPLO surgery at a very
young
age
for
a
partially
torn
cruciate ligament. Later she developed
arthritis in that leg.
Both of these
things put a damper on her agility
career.
She
also
suffered
from
allergies causing her to be on a
special
diet
and
receive
weekly
injections. Then at the age of nine
years she developed lymphoma. She had
been undergoing chemotherapy for nine
months and was doing well. Then she
started having complications from the
medication. On September 13th, she
suddenly had a seizure and died.
Despite all of this, she still
had a tremendous spirit and lived up
to her middle name of Bodacious.
Shelties have a reputation for being
soft dogs. I have always said that
Bailey
was
the
most
hard-headed
Sheltie that I have ever owned. You
could scold her for something and it
wouldn't phase her.
She also had
selective hearing. But all that being
said, she was also very fun to have
around! We in the Harper household
miss her very much. It is very quiet
now without hearing her bark when it
is time for Kelsey and Miley to be fed
and let outside. I would like to thank
everyone for their kind words and
cards.
