Évora is a Portuguese city located in Alentejo, a large region of wide
plains on the south of Portugal, bordered on the North by the Tagus
River and on the South by the region of Algarve.
Due to its well-preserved old town Centre, still partially enclosed by
medieval walls, and a large number of monuments dating from various
historical periods, including a Roman Temple, Évora is a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. It is also a member of the Most Ancient European Towns
Network.
Évora is ranked number two in the Portuguese most livable cities survey
of living conditions published yearly by Expresso (Portuguese
newspaper).
Pedrogão Dam
Pedrógão dam is located in the Vidigueira municipality, district of Beja. It
plays the role of counter-Alqueva dam, allowing the hydroelectric
Alqueva to operate reversibly.

to satisfy some of your hunger with the surrounding. The building is
from the beginnings of the XX century and with its beautiful vaults it
gathers bygone days architecture style inviting you to enjoy different
quondam sensations. It was initially build to store olive jars and being
inside it is like travelling into a story written by Eça de Quierós or Camilo
Castelo Branco ( great Portuguese writers from the XIX century).
The restaurant opened in 1994 and in case you want to know it has
received sereval nacional and international awards.
One can only enjoy it!
Alqueva dam
The Alqueva dam is a dam located on the Guadiana River in the Alentejo
region. The reservoir is the largest in Portugal and Western Europe.
The complex project was made to produce hydroelectric power,
irrigation, as well as a large reservoir where several tourist ventures are
also being built. Alqueva, a village of about 350 inhabitants, gives the
project the name.

The Alentejo is the driest and hottest region in Portugal. Persistent
droughts are a problem. The climate and a lack of infrastructure have
hindered economic development and isolated the area from the
national and European economies.
During the 1950s, the Portuguese Government ordered a study about
the feasibility of the dam project. The potential benefits of the Alqueva
dam were discussed for decades. An initial effort was undertaken in
1974, but it was abandoned in 1978. The final decision to build the dam
was taken only in the 1990s.
Aldeia da Luz, a small village that lay in the projected flood zone of the
dam, was completely rebuilt on a new site, with the same name.
On February 8, 2002, the 96 metre high floodgates of the Alqueva dam
were closed. In 2006 the lake was filled to the planned level, with a
surface area of 250 km². The length of the margin of the lake created by
the reservoir is longer than that of the Portuguese Atlantic coast.
In 2004, the hydroelectric power station started to work. By 2025
(though the endeavour is already slated to be finished by 2013), the lake
should supply irrigation water for 1 100 km² in the Alentejo.
Monsaraz
Monsaraz another town near the border between Portugal and Spain
which was founded by the Moors and has already been selected has
contender to one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal in the year of 2007. Its
inhabit by around 750 people and as an area of 88km2 which makes
8.9 h/km².
The town was conquered from the Moors in the 1167 by the Portuguese
warrior Geraldo, whose loyal combatants were mainly adventurers and
robbers.
Monsaraz realizes an important biennal cultural event called Open
Monsaraz Museum, an initiative that usually takes place in July.
Visitors can enjoy the monuments and landscape, as well as various art
exhibitions that are permanently displayed in the church of Santiago.

Almourol Castle
Castelo de Almourol in Ribatejo, located in Praia do Ribatejo, Santarém,
although its location is often attributed to Tancos as it is the village
where one sees it better.
It was conquered in 1129 by the first king of Portugal D. Afonso
Henriques (1112-1185). He gave it to the Knights Templar, then in
charge of the settlement of the territory between the river Mondego
and the Tagus, and the defense of the then capital of Portugal, Coimbra.
Erected a granite outcrop at 18 m above the water level, a small island
of 310 m long by 75 m wide, in the middle course of the river Tagus, just
below of its confluence with the river Zêzere. At the time of the
Reconquista, it was part of the Defensive line of Tagus. It is one of the
most representative examples of military architecture of the time,
evoking the beginnings of the kingdom of Portugal.
