CANARYWHARF.COM | 21 V I S UA L A RT STRIPPING THE WILLOW SCULPTURE BY JULIAN WILD 29 JUNE – 15 AUGUST LOBBY, ONE CANADA SQUARE FREE julianwild.com E X HI BI T IO N TO U R TUESDAY 21 JULY 6.30 - 7.15PM / FREE Curator Ann Elliott tours the exhibition with Julian Wild to reserve your place please email visualart@canarywharf.com In this exhibition Julian Wild shows recent work in bronze and stainless steel, the surface of both highly polished. In some pieces he introduces vibrant colour as if stripping away a layer of one substance to reveal another. Most of these sculptures were created since Wild has been spending more time in the Sussex countryside surrounded by managed woodland and the rural activities of coppicing, harvesting and working wood. This milieu has almost subliminally worked its way into his sculpture, as reflected in the title he gives this exhibition: Stripping the Willow. In these new works Wild moves seamlessly from geometric to organic form. His earlier use of man-made materials such as glass, ceramics and plastics may currently lie dormant; however his inventiveness and the wide range of scale in which he works remain ever present. 22 | @YOURCANARYWHARF V I S UA L A RT COMMUNITY WINDOW GALLERY BOW ARTS CANADA PLACE 14 MAY – 7 JULY PRITCHARD’S ROAD DAY CENTRE 7 JULY – 8 SEPTEMBER BOW ARTS This exhibition displays the work of the Art Group at Pritchard’s Road Day Centre in Bethnal Green, a multi-cultural centre for adults with mental health issues. The Art Group chose the theme of Transportation for the simple reason that all the members liked drawing real or imagined modes of transport. They realised that in a city like London there are three different levels in operation at any one time - underground, overground and up in the air. They also felt it was important to show these different levels as it reflects and challenges common preconceptions that they are often judged by their mental health needs and not by their artistic talents. Bow Arts takes professional artists into schools across East London to improve the lives and learning of children and young people. Ella Robinson and Sara Heywood recently worked with six schools on the Isle of Dogs to create original works of art for each school. Three schools created bold vinyl artworks with Sara, inspired by everyday objects, nature and local architecture. Ella worked with Early Years children to design and make playful and interactive Higgledy-Piggledy Trees. The project also included teaching training and family workshops. This display includes photos and models of the artworks, children’s work that informed the final designs, and photos of the workshops. bowarts.org CANARYWHARF.COM | 23 V I S UA L A RT WINDOW GALLERIES ART, CANADA WALK 31 MAY – 26 JUNE ARIANE PRIN: IN RUST I TRUST London-based Ariane takes the metal dust left from key cutting and other metalworking to mix with plaster and Jesmonite, resulting in her collection of trays, pots and vases that slowly oxidise over time to give way to unique, unpredictable patterns. arianeprin.com 28 JUNE – 31 JULY BOB ALDOUS Bob works in a variety of media including painting, poetry, performance and installations most recently experimenting with back lighting to produce a subtle radiance that complements his poetic style. Combining paintings and drawings with lyrical poetry his meditations follow a journey through love from its beginnings, flowering, beyond break-up and loss to the acceptance that love needs to combine with freedom. bobaldous.com 2 – 28 AUGUST JULIAN TSCHOLLAR Julian’s desire is to create images whose visual impact lie in their narrative potential. He uses the human figure as the substrate for his paintings. So far his work has aimed to investigate the possibilities hidden amidst the junctures of materials, formal structures, and different approaches to figuration. isisphoenixarts.com/project/julian-tschollar 24 | @YOURCANARYWHARF The Art and Design Window Galleries showcase up-and-coming artists, designers and craftspeople and are located in Canada Place. DESIGN, JUBILEE WALK 31 MAY – 26 JUNE KATE NOLAN Kate produces stark, contemporary embroideries for the 21st century: there is nothing dainty or conventional about her work. She uses industrial materials to bridge the gap between traditional embroidery and the modern world, creating hangings that are intriguingly fragile but also utilitarian, and designed to be viewed as free-standing decorative hangings. katenolandesign.com 28 JUNE – 31 JULY ALEX YULE Alex draws inspiration from her surrounding environment and spent her childhood in the British countryside, inheriting her father’s love of wild flowers and beachcombing rocky coastlines. Alongside a career in Display Design Alex explored her underlying ambition to be a jeweller, learning the skills of working with precious metals, to develop her proficiency in fine jewellery making. alexyulejewellery.co.uk 2 – 28 AUGUST MALA SIAMPTANI Beauty, grandeur, mystery and danger are nature’s messages and the study of the form and functional characteristics of natural structures is what provides inspiration for Mala’s jewellery. The challenge for her latest collection was the exploration of the effects infection by agents such as bacteria, microorganisms, parasites or viruses, has on form. malasiamptani.com CANARYWHARF.COM | 25 WHAT TO WATCH Entourage 19 JUNE (TBC) Mr Holmes 19 JUNE (TBC) Picking up where the HBO smash-hit Sir Ian McKellen adds another iconic Hollywood satire left off, this big-screen character to his resumé, playing a retired upgrade sees producer Ari (Jeremy Sherlock Holmes who looks back on his Piven) bankrolling movie star Vince’s life as he grapples with the unsolved (Adrian Grenier) directorial debut. case of a beautiful woman.
