Ideal, whether you’re transporting packaged or bulk goods, urgent deliveries or sensitive items, tools or a whole team of workers. Over 60 variations and no two the same ... The Vario combines all the advantages of a van with the strengths of a light truck. Over 60 different variations are available ex-factory – plus around 300 items of optional equipment for even greater comfort and ease of handling under specific operating conditions. The 60 + combinations are the result of four wheelbases, two roof heights and a wide range of bodies such as panel van, pickup, tipper and a standard cab or crewcab. The possibilities range from classic panel vans to chassis with special bodies – a solution often found in the light truck sector. A special “traction head” version is also available. So what is it to be? Greater payload, Over 60 variations ex-factory as well as a large variety of special bodies are what make the Vario so unique. In brief, the model series offers made-to-measure transport solutions for long-term profitability greater cargo area or greater cargo capacity? With the Vario, the choice is yours: with a maximum payload* of approx. 4.4 t, a maximum cargo area of 14.79 m2 and a maximum cargo capacity of 17.4 m3. ... and that’s just the beginning Special requests are all par for the course with the Vario. And the Vario chassis provides the ideal basis for collaborating with competent body specialists to achieve even more specialised solutions. For example, the Vario can be used for transporting special goods, drinks or refrigerated products, by postal or courier services, for municipal use, with a standard or refrigerated boxbody, as a fire brigade, police or emergency service vehicle... or as a basis for bus bodies or as a camper van. And these are just the most important variations. One thing distinguishes every Vario: Mercedes-Benz quality It doesn’t matter what a Vario looks like or what its intended use is, as a Mercedes-Benz van, it acts as the benchmark in its class – not just when it comes to technology, safety and comfort but, above all, in terms of value for money. It comes with the proverbial Mercedes-Benz quality, reliability and durability that reduce follow-up costs; with easy handling, comfortable loading and a flexibility of use that make work more efficient; with state-of-the art electronic engine management, high engine output and low consumption values; with service intervals of 45,000 km as a rule; with disc brakes on all four wheels and with the option of a driver’s airbag**. And, last but not least, it comes equipped with a comfortable driver’s workplace. It’s a giant among vans when it comes to payload and volume. And when performing its multitudinous tasks it more than lives up to its name, providing variability that is virtually unmatched. The bigger the job, the better the Vario When it comes to cargo capacity, the Vario panel van is certainly one of life’s “takers”. Offering a volume of up to 17.4 m3, it combines the loadcarrying potential of a light truck with the various advantages of a van, including visibility, flexibility and manoeuvrability. The Vario panel van demonstrates its true strengths where others fail: in the field of heavy or bulky goods – the staple diet of regional haulage, industry and commerce, the furniture removal trade and the public sector. A choice of different partitions and various combinations of rear and sliding side doors is available to meet your own personal requirements and to tailor your van specifically to your intended use, allowing you, for example, to load and unload Europallets from all sides. Every detail is designed to promote ease of use – consider, for example, the practically vertical side walls and optional flattened wheel housings which maximise capacity and ensure an efficient use of space when stacking or adding interior fittings. And when it comes to payload, the Vario panel van doesn’t begin to reach its limits until somewhere around the 4.3-t mark. The Vario panel van is also ideal for accommodating Europallets 7 The Vario pickup Developed from practical experience for practical use The sheer variety of Vario pickups and the many detailed solutions designed with the user in mind are testimony to their heritage: this van is very clearly a product of the knowledge and understanding gained from practical experience. 8 Getting the measure of things Opting for a Vario pickup means refusing to compromise. Just take a look at the available cargo area: with four different wheelbases, the pickup offers you a cargo area of between 6.92 and 14.79 m2. Or consider the available payload of up to around 4.4 t in models with a permissible gross weight of 7.49 t. This makes it ideal for all uses requiring a van that can stand on its own four wheels: in the construction industry, in the building materials trade, in the haulage sector or when transporting parcelled goods. It goes without saying, of course, that we’ve thought about the passengers, too: up to seven people can make themselves comfortable in the crewcab model. That means having enough room in the front for the full team, and enough in the pickup body for all the materials. And still allows a large load of material to be transported at the same time 9 The Vario tipper When the going gets tough, the tough get going When the going gets tough, the Vario really comes into its own. And when used as one of the tippers that go about their daily work on building and construction sites, it certainly shows what it is capable of, combining high payload with manoeuvrability. Anything but one-sided To the rear, to the right or to the left – when unloading goods, our Vario tippers are anything but one-sided: they are designed as three-way tippers ex-factory and can handle payloads of up to about 4 tonnes. Despite the amount of space the Vario offers for materials and people, it needs very little for itself. On building sites in particular the manoeuvrability of a van pays off. With a turning circle of just 11.8 metres ( with 3150-mm wheelbase), the Vario handles as easily as a passenger car. There are now even more sides to the all-wheel drive If you’re out on rough terrain – working in landscape gardening or on construction sites, for example – you’ll soon come to appreciate the Vario 814 DA / 815 DA all-wheel drives. The tipper, too, is optionally available with a crewcab 11 Special-purpose bodies A professional basis you can build on The sheer diversity of the special bodies which can be combined with the Vario chassis is quite remarkable. But whichever one you choose, you can be confident it has been developed in close partnership with leading body specialists* in order to create a van which is tailor-made for your specific requirements. Everything’s possible with the right partners Although there are more than 60 ex-works variants of the Vario – and a choice of some 500 items of factory-fitted special equipment – certain customer requirements call for solutions which we develop as virtual one-offs in close cooperation with our specialist body-building partners. This means that the possibilities are almost unlimited. Box-bodies, for example, are available in dry cargo /standard box form, insulated or refrigerated, and with or without a liftgate. In fact, if you’re looking for a special solution in the cargo volume range up to 31 m3, almost anything is possible. The Vario as a workplace The cockpits of Mercedes vans have always had a straightforward, easily comprehensible layout. The Vario is no exception to this design principle. The instruments are clear and non-reflective, and can be read easily by day or night. The interior of the Vario is luxurious in the amount of space it gives the driver and up to two codrivers – or up to 7 people in the case of the crewcab. And this is comfort with a purpose. Its aim is to take stress off the driver, because the job is stressful enough. And enhanced safety Technology is not an end in itself as far as we are concerned, but a means to an end. From high-torque engines and different transmissions and final-drive ratios for different purposes, to the safety and reliability of the entire system. In all 4 x 2 models this engine is combined with the tried-andtested 6-speed transmission. The Vario with all-wheel drive The 814 DA /815 DA permanent all-wheel-drive model variants prove their worth in any application on difficult terrain, particularly in the landscape gardening business or on construction sites. A selectable off-road ratio ensures greater tractive power on rough ground and, to improve traction, both the differential in the transfer case and the rear axle differential can be locked. n n n Automatic transmission3) (alternative for 4 x 2 models with output of 100 or 110 kW ) Cruise control Vario with bio-diesel drive: as an option the standard Vario engine can be modified so that it can run on bio-diesel (rapeseed oil methyl ester), making it even more eco-friendly by helping to preserve fossil fuels The Vario engines deliver high torque at low engine speeds. The most powerful version delivers its maximum torque of 675 Nm from just 1200 rpm 140 Output kW Torque when it matters With a fully laden van, the top speed is less important than knowing that the necessary tractive power is there when you need it – when accelerating and on uphill gradients. Here the three different Vario diesel engines are particularly impressive. Even the 100-kW (136-hp) engine for the 614 D, 814 D and 814 DA Vario models, featuring direct injection, exhaust gas turbocharger and charge-air cooling, develops high pulling power at low engine speeds, thanks to its impressive 520Nm torque. The more powerful version of this 4.2-l engine, with its output of 110 kW (150 hp) and torque of 580 Nm, is designed for the 615 D, 815 D and 815 DA models. A 5-speed transmission with overdrive and a precisely tuned powertrain ensure optimum power transfer from these two engines to the wheels.
