Waterford Rehab Center to offer so much!
A Publication of Sunset Retirement Communities & Services Spring 2015 Waterford Rehab Center to offer so much! F o r over a year now, there have been various construction crews working feverishly on the building going up on the Waterford campus. Literally hundreds of thousands of people have driven past it wondering what it was, when will it be finished, when can they apply for jobs or when can they move in. This building – what it represents – is a big deal for Sunset, for sure. But it is a big deal for the surrounding communities, as well. Waterford Rehab Center will be a big asset for the senior community and their family members because we are providing additional much-needed assisted living homes and physical rehabilitation rooms. The building is being built with many open gathering areas so that residents and their visitors will be able to enjoy their surroundings as well as each other. Some notable amenities are: • Bathing spas • Bank office onsite • Beautiful grounds • Beauty salon with a manicure & pedicure station • Café • Gathering areas • Pool for rehab, exercise & recreation • Resident computer room • Rooftop patio with a ‘living wall’ ...continues on page 4 MISSION STATEMENT ourtimes To provide quality services for senior adults in a spirit of Christian love. A The “I-Am-From-The-IRS” Phone Fraud has been called the “largest, most persuasive impersonation scam in the history of the IRS.” The scam usually starts with a fraudster, using a fake name and giving a false badge number, calling a victim and claiming the victim owes taxes. Below is a typical scenario: Diane lived in a small town in Oregon and is in her mid-fifties. When the fraudster threatened her with an 18-month prison sentence and a $25,000 fine, she was terrified. Panic-stricken, she withdrew $15,000 from her savings and placed it on a debit card. She lost the $15,000 to the fraudster. Sunset is no different, especially with the hundreds of people we employ. And although we’d love to introduce you to each and every individual who comes and goes – because they impact lives here – we just can’t. Here’s two we think you’d be very interested in knowing better. STEVEN BOSSENBROEK, our new Chief Financial Officer Steven is a Grandville native, who graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Master’s of Science in Accounting. After finishing school, he began his career as an auditor at Ernst & Young, dipped his hand in real estate development, and managed the US financial operations for GFT Markets/Gain Capital. Then, “through a series of fortuitous events,” he joined Sunset. But he was not a stranger to the care that we offer as his Grandpa and Grandma Bossenbroek and his Great Aunt Leona VanOss were residents at Sunset. With that previous connection and his desire “to influence the direction of a great organization and also care for the community in which I grew up,” once Steven came across Sunset’s CFO job posting, he applied and the rest is history. He’s definitely up for the imminent challenges of a changing healthcare environment and the retiring of a large segment of the population. Watch for Steven to be part of the creative and innovative team that prepares Sunset for that future of service. BENJAMIN LEAVELL, our new Brookcrest Administrator Ben was born and raised in Cadillac, but jumped at the chance to move to the Grand Rapids area to join Sunset, “a company that is instilled with Christian morals and ethics with a firm foundation of service.” He did a vast amount of research on Sunset during the interviewing process, wanting to be part of a team that is nonprofit and that serves the whole person, and “came up with nothing but amazing results.” Having gone to Michigan State’s administrator’s program to obtain his administrator’s license, and having a strong background in the fine dining industry, it should come as no surprise that Ben sees his administrator’s role as a mission of service. “I feel it is truly an honor to serve those who are in need and may not be able to do everything for themselves.” He, too, sees the challenges in healthcare reform and “of always striving to improve our services and level of quality, no matter where we are currently positioned. I have always believed that remaining stagnant is no better than going backwards.” Watch for great things to come! Ben appreciates the reception he has received since his arrival, “which has been nothing but amazing.” He and his family have transitioned very well into the area and are enjoying all that the Grand Rapids area has to offer. If you’re visiting at Brookcrest, stop by to give him a warm Grand Rapidian “hello!” And while both Steve and Ben directed their steps to join the Sunset staff in its mission of service, we know that God set things in motion for his purpose. ”’For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Jeremiah 29:11 Benjamin Leavell Steven Bossenbroek SunsetCommunities.org l Spring 2015 l ourtimes 5 Sunset has won again this year! Bt & Brightt It seems as though there are a plethora of award shows on TV honoring everything under the sun. What’s important to you drives your viewing choices. We hope Sunset is important enough to you so you ‘tune in’ now. West Michigan’s 101 Best & Brightest Companies to Work For is a competition that identifies and honors organizations that display a commitment to excellence in their human resource practices and staff enrichment. Last year was the first year we threw our ‘hat in the ring’ and won. But was winning the award a fluke? Apparently not, as Sunset has won again this year. The Best & Brightest organization sends out 300 evaluation 6 surveys to random Sunset staff asking for feedback on areas such as staff development, teamwork, organizational leadership, community involvement, compensation, and company values. Once the surveys are returned, the results are tallied and recorded. And while we are extremely honored that our staff feel we are doing a great job, the feedback on where improvement can be made is just as important. That information helps guide our programming so that we can build up and enable our staff to reach their full potential. If you have a chance, stop one of our employees and give them a word of congratulations on a job well done. A word of thanks is an award in and of itself! into how quickly a patient recuperates from an illness or how good a resident’s quality of life is? If you haven’t thought about it, be assured that nurses have. They know that each piece of education they receive in school, along with day-to-day experience, greatly impacts resident care. Mary O’Hara, a former Brookcrest resident, was the recipient of a nursing education and she practiced her craft as well. Mrs. O’Hara was a giving soul, as well as a practical person. She decided that when she left this life she wanted to give back and make things better for both Brookcrest staff going to nursing school and the recipients of staff care. Mary O’Hara Scholarship That’s how her scholarship started and people with that same passion for resident care are who make it continue today. Did you ever consider how much good nursing care factors In 2014, the Mary O’Hara Scholarship was awarded to ourtimes l Spring 2015 l SunsetCommunities.org LES LWE E c M E dy Matt Har Matt Hartman, a three-time recipient. Does he appreciate the help he received? You bet! Recently, the Mary O’Hara Family decided they would open up the scholarship to embrace all those Sunset staff going to nursing school. What a wonderful way to impact our residents through our staff! To all (and you know who you are) who so generously contribute to this scholarship yearly, thank you! If you would like to make an impact for this year’s scholarship fund, donate online at SunsetCommunities.org or use the enclosed remittance envelope. Caring Spirit Award Every year LeadingAge Michigan, an association of nonprofit aging services organizations, holds a ‘contest’ of sorts to honor those who embody excellence in leadership, care, and service innovation, and who are making outstanding contributions to their communities in the field of long-term care. This year, once again, we have a staff member who won an award for the category of Caring Spirit. This category is a very important one for us, because it shows the character of the staff we employ. Many staff members were nominated by their fellow employees, but a Helen De tman unfortunately, the Selection Committee had to narrow it down to just one recipient, Les McElwee, of Waterford Place. Les didn’t want to accept the award as he felt what he does is nothing special. But those who were willing to be filmed and say a few words in his honor, definitely think him worthy. It’s Les’ attitude that makes the difference, his willingness to go out of his way to help or say a kind word to bolster lagging spirits – and so much more. The Caring Spirit Award definitely fits Les to a T. Congratulations, Les! SunsetCommunities.org l Spring 2015 l ourtimes 7 Your generosity is one of our greatest blessings!
