REPORTS
OFFICER
I
t’s with great sadness that I announce the
death of two members. Both will be missed
by the SAOCA.
Dave Herren died early this December after a
complication from surgery. Dave was restoring a
series II Alpine with a Ford V6 conversion.
George Schneider died last fall after an accident
while working on his house. George had a nice
series V Alpine and had just completed installing
an OD unit.
I’m hoping to get the final membership renewals completed with this
newsletter and finally get us on to the October 1st renewal date. I’ve tried
to make this as painless as possible and I appreciate everyone working
with me while I make the change. This will help me to help everyone better
and save me a lot of time in the long run.
I’m very pleased to offer a membership roster along with this issue of The
Alpine Marque. Many of you have asked and I feel that adding it to this
publication will save money by reducing the cost of a separate printing. We
will continue to publish updated membership rosters in our Winter issues.
Invasion IV will be here before you know it. This year, Jan Servaites has
arranged for us to hold the event at The US Air Force Museum. You
should all know what a special honor this is and a once in a lifetime
experience. We will actually hold the banquet dinner in the museum where
the planes are kept. Have you ever had your favorite meal under the wing of
a B-29 bomber? You won’t want to miss this event! We will also be
reducing the cost of the event this year. There will be no registration fee to
attend, however you will be responsible for the cost per meal at the
banquet. This will be kept within reason and should be around the same
price as dinner at a local restaurant.
See you in Dayton!

H
appy New Year to all! By the time you read
this I should be a father for the second time
and life continues to get delightfully more
complicated. There is very little on the Sunbeam
front for me to report on. After a six month wait I did
finally receive my convertible top from England. I
had held out for an original Everflex material top and
the supplier took his sweet time to get it to me.
Hopefully this spring I will be able to install it on the
Series 3 ST. Work continues on the GT, but at a
snail’s pace. I’m in no real rush as I have yet to pay off the bills from the
first restoration.
Many of you by now have seen the advertisements for the Alpine GiveAway. This has caused quite a stir, and must be a first among Sunbeam
clubs. Ian & Co. continue to gather parts for the project. Unfortunately the
donor car turned out to be too far gone for an economical restoration, but
Ian dipped once again into the remaining bat-cave hoard to find a nice
Series II body. This should be a fun project, with the results to be given
away at the 2005 Invasion.
Jan continues to make great progress for Invasion IV. I think you’ll be
amazed at the venue and the cost of this Invasion. Make your plans now
to come.
With the mild winter so far in Cincinnati I’ve been able to fire up the Alpine
and drive it around from time to time. I had “winterized” the car,
anticipating much ice and snow but so far that has not been the case.
Still, without a convertible top it can get a bit chilly. I’m looking forward to
those warm spring days again.
Remember, stay in touch with the latest club news and chatter on the
message board. Visit www.sunbeamalpine.org.
Cheers,
Scott

W
ell, we've reached the end of
another year and for those of us
in Northern latitudes cold
weather has arrived. The cars are winterized
and put away until spring, or at least a
warmer day, as we prepare for the holidays.
So those of you who live in the South, take
an extra drive for us who can't.
Plans for next summer's Invasion are moving
right along. Jan's doing a great job on the
arrangements and I think the members will be surprised and pleased with
the way it works out. And if all the arrangements can be made, the
banquet should be very impressive. So make sure you keep that time free,
looks like we will be gathering on the weekend of June 12. I look forward
to seeing all of you there.
Speaking of Invasion issues, I haven't seen it yet but the giveaway car has
arrived. While the original car was a bit rough, I think the replacement car
will be something any one of us would be proud to own when it's complete.
But, this will only work with each one of us participating to the extent he or
she can. I hate to sound like I'm begging, but paint, rubber, and interior bit
are not cheap so once we have the requirements worked out, be as
generous as you can.
So have a safe new year and drive them until the roads wear!
Mike Phillips

help wonder if
one day this
would be me in
a little
convertible. I
found myself
craving the wind in my hair,
and the open topped motoring experience.
Knowing full well, that the purchase of such a vehicle could not
happen, since financing for college was my first priority. I was left with the
nagging dream after the great motoring experience and if I would ever
enjoy this dream. The same summer proved to be an educational meeting
up with a neighbour, who had purchased a sharp little green MG Midget.
All I could say about the Midget is, “WOW what a small car!”. Six blocks
away from home another fellow was the proud owner of a 1965 Sunbeam
Alpine. I loved the look of the Alpine and I felt it was unlike the other cars,
so it had a little more appeal to me. Spurring on my interest was one of
my older Aunts, who told me stories about there TR-2 that they purchased
new overseas. She and my Uncle loved the car and had it shipped back
into Canada. I now could understand why the British car bug was in my
blood and it was entirely my Aunt’s fault! Hey, I think it is a good reason
for this passion but then who needs an excuse as it just takes one short
drive in one of these little cars and you’re hooked for life. During the next
14 years, the only open motoring I experienced was on two wheels. My
first ride was a Yamaha RD-400 and then a Suzuki GSXR 750 motorcycle.
Upon meeting my soon to be wife, I began to understand the fear and
dislike my significant other had for these two wheel daemons. I was now
given the opportunity to purchase my first little two seater convertible and
of course, with the help of my wife Rhonda and it was all pure fun.

We had the
Miata for 10
years and
every
summer
was a
blast as
the little car was
taken out of storage. As life changed
with the purchase of a small farm property to keep our
horses, I was forced to re-evaluate the need for a little sports car. Sadly
my little car was sold and we purchased a new 4x4 truck for the farm.
I began to email Rhonda pictures of great little cars, two, three, four or five
picture each day. One year passed and I think Rhonda was so tired of my
talk about a classic sports car that she began to soften a little. I found out
about a MGA and it was only a 20 min. drive from our home. A number of
calls had been made to arrange a meeting to check out the car and as
luck would have it was sold. I then found out about a couple of Sunbeam
Alpine project cars up near Lucknow, Ontario. I made a quick call and off
we went to check them out. Between the two cars I was sure that it would
be a great little project yet I was torn and had no idea what to do? Should
I purchase the cars or take that chance in that I may miss out on another
great deal if I was to wait. I admit, I had little knowledgeable at all in
regard to the cars, what to look for and what the cost would be to make
one road worthy. Human nature and the need for a toy started to take
hold; I had to shrug it off. I turned away from the cars and I we began to
leave down the driveway, Rhonda turned and said “Don’t you want the
cars”? I turned in amazement; this just may be the opportunity that I was
looking for. Yes, it was that same little glimmer of light that I had been
informed of by my other male friends, it was that all so illusive feminine
sign of autonomy! On with the brakes! As the gravel flipped out to the
sides of the road and as dust billowed around us, Rhonda turned in
amazement at how quickly the cash was pulled from my pocket!

The two Alpine’s where delivered to my little garage and the fun began.
Like with any hobby a passion can become a collection or should I say an
obsession. I found out about a SII Sunbeam for sale through a small
trader publication and just had to check it out. I was informed that the car
was to include 3 engine blocks and a few other odds and ends that had
been found at an auction as the original older owner had sadly passed
away. I walked away from this purchase but during my conversation with
this fellow tying to make the sale, I was informed of another possible car
that the same old fellow had started to restore. The only catch was that
the location of this car was unknown.

One full year had passed and I was able to get my SIV running, wiring all
worked out and I know had an idea to what I was in for. One thing always
leads to another Sunbeam! I was on my way to pick up some lumber to
finish an addition on our horse barn. We started to talk about cars and in
passing I had mentioned that I owned two Sunbeam Alpines. The fellows
eye brow raised up a little and informed me that he new a fellow that and
a couple of them. In fact he said that one was in the middle of restoration
and that the owner had passed away. Wow, not to make light of the fellow
passing away but could this be the other Alpine that I had been told about
last year. The lumberyard foreman gave me the widow’s name and off I
went I make a new important contact. It turned out that she had
knowledge of my twin brother and his wife and the two of us hit it off
straight away. In short, I purchased a very nice SIII Sunbeam Alpine along
with a number of parts and history for the car.
I don’t know why I love British cars as I feel compelled to check out all of
the Brits and the stranger thing is that they don’t have to be sports cars.
In telling you this I have to also admit to the purchase of a 1964 Sunbeam
Rapier, it is in very bad shape. To add to the sickness I just took a look at
a 1964 Sunbeam Minx with a little under 9000 original miles. What am I
nuts? It has to be the Canadian winters! Having fun up here in Canada and
I hope I have made you smile. - END

PERTRONIX IGINITOR PROBLEMS ON THE SUNBEAM ALPINE
By Ed Esslinger
F
ive or six years ago I installed a PerTronix LU-142 unit in my Series
4. It worked great; I did not even have to adjust the timing, as it was
spot on right out of the box. A few weeks ago it just quit working. I
had on hand a new LU-142A (the replacement for the LU-142) that has a
new improved mounting plate. Without rotating the distributor, I installed
the new unit. The engine would not start. I had to rotate the distributor all
the way CCW, before I could get the engine to start. I checked the timing
and found that it was still about 10deg. too far advanced, even with the
vacuum vernier adjusted all the way to retard. I contacted PerTronix and
told them of the problem. They asked me to send in my old LU-142.
Yesterday, I received a new unit mounted on my OLD MOUNTING PLATE
at no charge. Even though it was out of warranty. Thank you PerTronix! I
phoned them and got the customer service rep, whom I had spoken to
previously. I asked why is there such a difference in the timing between the
two units? He was very helpful by referring me to Rocky Sherer for answers
to this problem. Not wanting to void my warranty by modifying the new
mounting plate, I mounted the LU-142A; on an old moving contact breaker
plate; about a quarter inch CCW from where it would normally mount. I had
to cut off the pivot post to do it. I installed the modified breaker plate and
the LU-142A in the distributor. The engine fired up on the first try. Now
there is no problem in setting timing. I am tempted to run it this way, but if
I have to go back to points in an emergency, I would also have to change
the breaker plate.
I have wasted most of a day trying to determine why my new LU-142A is
so much different than the LU-142 that I have on four other cars.

PAGE 27
The LU-142 module comes pre mounted on a plate that is held down by
one screw that previously mounted the condenser. The LU-142A is a twopiece design, a mounting plate and a separate module. The mounting plate
mounts, using two existing holes in the contact breaker plate. The module
is then secured to two studs on the plate using a couple of nuts. This is
what I have determined; in an effort to improve the mounting they
redesigned the mounting plate.
I have found that THE MOUNTING STUDS ARE TOO FAR CLOCKWISE
(About ¼ “). If they want to fix this problem (and still use two screws to
mount the plate) they will have to redesign the mounting plate or maybe go
back to the old mounting. I would hold off buying a LU-142A kit until this
problem is resolved.
I have been in contact with Rocky Sherer of PerTronix. He has been very
helpful and admits there is a problem with the mounting for the Lucas 25D
distributor. I am including his reply in this article.
I hope we get this problem resolved soon, I feel there is no better product
on the market that improves the performance of Our Sunbeams as much
as the PerTronix Ignitor.
Dear Ed,
It was nice to talk with you again. I’m not sure if your readers are
interested in a brief history of the Ignitor kit for the Lucas 25D distributor or
not. It seems appropriate to me and therefore I’ll take a minute to outline
the history of the kit. The 25D distributor has a few features that make it
an interesting one to fit. One is the post that happens to be different
heights depending on which 25D that you have and the other being that the
best position for the module happens to be right on top of the threaded
hole used to hold the points in place. Most of our 100+ kit designs use
the point’s screw to secure the Ignitor to the base plate. Given the design
of the 25D distributor, our first kit, the LU-142, used the condenser’s screw
hole to secure the Ignitor’s base plate. We began to receive a moderate
amount of phone calls from customers expressing that they were
uncomfortable with using the condenser’s screw hole since it was small
and off to one side. There was another problem relating to some after
market rotors that we’re shaped a little different than the original and were
rubbing on the module. In order to solve both of these problems, we
developed the LU-142A kit with two major changes.
ISSUE #7
The Alpine Marque
Page 28
One, use a small module (that we had recently developed) and, two,
change the design to a detachable module, that would also allow the use
of the point’s screw hole for securing the base plate. With the use of the
detachable module the afore mentioned post became a problem. We
found that by moving the location of the module 15 degrees we could avoid
the post and everything would be fine. We were even happier with the
“phasing” of the kit since the firing moved away from the outer edge and
into the middle of what amounts to a rotor with a very large “sweep”. We
made this change and introduced the LU-142A about three years ago and
have literally sold several thousand of these kits. Just recently, we’ve
begun receiving calls from Alpine owners complaining that the 15 degree of
timing adjustment is not possible since the vacuum advance will get “hungup” while adjusting and does not allow the distributor to be turned far
enough to achieve proper timing. Apparently, some enthusiasts have
installed their distributor 180 degrees backwards, which works fine for
performance, but looks rather odd! I think that represents the problem in
more detail than you probably bargained for (sorry).
Ed, we here at PerTronix are interested in our kits being designed properly
and providing years of trouble free service. There are two ways that we can
solve the dilemma that has been outlined above. The first would be to offer
the LU-142 kit as an alternative to the LU-142A. The second, and the
option that we plan to pursue, is to have a new mold made for the magnet
sleeve that will locate the magnets 15 degrees from where they are now
and will bring the location of the timing back even with the timing location
of the points. We estimate this mold for a new sleeve will be ready in 90120 days. We will offer a free magnet sleeve swap to anybody who
previously purchased the LU-142A kit.
I hope this helps, if you need any additional info let me know.

Sunbeam Alpine Racing Westcoast Style…in the East
By Carl Christiansen
W
ell the wheels are in motion for next summer’s (2004) visit to
the
Midwest and east coast. Many a vintage race I watched from
outside the fences at Mid Ohio, Lime Rock, Watkins Glen,
Bridgehampton (gone) and Vineland, New Jersey (gone). Since beginning
my Alpine racing in 1996 I’ve been making plans to trailer my car back
from the west coast to race as many tracks as possible during one
summer. That time has come.
With the engine rebuilt from last season’s racing and a spare engine,
freshly built for the trip Martha and I will be heading east after the VARA/
Moss Motors sponsored British Extravaganza race weekend at
Buttonwillow Raceway, Buttonwillow, California May 15/16.
For all of you who enjoy seeing Sunbeam Alpines at the vintage races I
plan on joining Steve Silverstein on a few of the tracks next summer and
we would like as many of you as can to watch us race. I expect some of
the competition might be quite impressed on what an Alpine can do on
the track. With twin 40 DCOE Webers, a hot racing cam, compression
ratio nearing 13:1 and a good set of racing tires I’m planning on showing
what an “underpowered” Alpine can do against the Porsches, MG’s, Alfa’s,
Elva’s, TVR’s, etc that don’t very often get to
see
an Alpine on the track.

The Great Sunbeam Alpine Give-Away!
by Ian Spencer
I
t’s with great pride that we announce the Sunbeam Alpine give away
project. As many of you have read at the web site, we will be giving a
Sunbeam Alpine away to one lucky member. This project started out
with the donation of a ‘59 series one body shell by Bill Tyree. The plan was
to restore this car by taking donations from club members for the needed
new and used parts. However, after taking delivery of the series one Alpine,
Jan and I
decided that it
was just too
rusty and not a
good vehicle to
give away to a
member.
Upon inspection
of the sand
blasted body we
discovered that
most of the
frames xmember had
been removed, along with both front frame out-riggers. There is also
extensive rust on the floors, no rear package shelf and very thin metal all
around. The extent of rust on this body will require the body to be dipped
and the inner rocker areas to be totally rebuilt. This will require too much
expense and time that the club is not willing to use for such a project. Bill
Tyree’s offer was very generous, however, we really need a better donor car
to work from.
In order to keep the project alive and on track, I have decided to donate a
1961 series two Alpine to replace the series one. This car, B9108455 LRX,
is a former California Alpine that I have been saving for a rainy day. This
body is very solid and will require very little repair work to be ready for
paint. It is also a complete car minus and engine, so the need for mass
parts donation will no longer be needed. Looks as if our rainy day has
finally arrived and I can benefit by removing another car from the Bat Cave!
B9108455 LRX will be finished to the same color scheme as the series
one. A fresh coat of Carnival Red paint will be applied by Jan Servaites

along with a 1725cc engine donated by Scott Christie. I will be donating
my time to organise the project and see that it is completed by Invasion 5
in 2005. B9108455 LRX will be fitted with wire wheels, wide white wall
radial tires, black hard top, and black interior. We will be putting the car
back together as close as possible to original factory specs and will be
using it as a focal point for future stories and articles on restoration and
repair.
Rules for the contest are as follows:
1.) Must be a member of the SAOCA in good standing.
2.) Every member will be awarded one (1) chance to win. Lucky
winner will be drawn at Invasion 5 in 2005.
3.) Winner will be responsible for any delivery, taxes or title fees
required to take possession of vehicle.
4.) Vehicle will be awarded AS IS. The SAOCA and its officers will
not be responsible for any future maintenance or up keep.
5.) Donations to project are NOT tax deductible. Please donate as
little or as much as you like. Members are not required to make
donations to win.
6.) Member need not be at Invasion 5 to win.
We reserve the right to add, remove or modify any of the rules involved in
The Alpine Give-Away as needed to keep it fair and on the level. The
objective is to provide a fun and exciting way to spark enthusiasm to the
club and the Sunbeam Alpine while providing a clean, safe vehicle to a
member. We encourage all club members to participate in this project by
donating time or money. There will be need for new parts and materials to
complete this project. I will provide a list in the Alpine Marque and at
www.sunbeamalpine.org with updated parts lists and project status.
B9108455 LRX is currently buried in the back of the Bat Cave and will need
to be pulled out before I can take any good pictures. I do feel confidant that
everyone will be pleased with the condition of the body. It is very solid and
has very little surface rust to contend with. I will be taking the front valance
off of the donated series one to replace the damaged valance one the
series two, therefore the series one will not totally be a wasted effort. I’m
very excited to make this car available to the club and look forward to
handing the keys over to the winner.
Step one of this project will be to get B9108455 LRX out for pictures. We
will also need to gather all it’s bits and start prepping them for assembly.
Since Jan will not be able to start paint work on this car until he completes
a project for someone else, we will need to work on other things to first. I

would like to begin by painting the engine compartment and getting the car
running and drivable. By the time we are finished with that part of the
project, Jan should be ready to apply fresh paint to the body for us.
Below you will find a short list of parts we will be needing for this project. I
want to extend a special thanks to those of you who have already sent
donations. It won’t take much to achieve our goal and complete the car.
