In this list are wines representing an array of both Italian and international offerings to intrigue the consumer and pair with the food seamlessly. Some of these wines are from unusual regions or grapes but are sure to be exceptional selections: simply refer to the glossary in the back of this book for a quick bit of information. Franciacorta Brut Rosé, Contadi Castaldi, Lombardia NV 10 5 13.5 33 -Méthode Champenoise sparkling wine from a region tucked in a sort of amphitheater south of the Alps, Franciacorta is ultrarefined and unmatched in elegance. A beautiful pink color is produced from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero to bring forth aromas of wild berries, fresh flowers, and chalky minerality. Ripe cherry, mandarin orange & strawberry aromas & flavors, a touch of sweetness balanced with lively acidity. Lambrusco, Tenuta Pederzana, Emilia-Romagna 2013 10 5 13.5 33 -Produced from 100% Grasparossa, this Lambrusco is deeply ruby colored with a light, fun effervescence. Fresh & fruity flavors of currants and crushed berries are supported by a firm tannin that pairs fabulously with food. Vermentino di Sardegna, Pala ‘I Fiori’, Sardegna 2015 9 4.5 12 28 N -A varietal that thrives only in the poorest soils and under the hottest driest conditions – struggle allows for an undeniable development of character. Found in the only DOCG in Sardegna, this Vermentino is layered with notes of green melon, wild fennel, sea spray and an oyster shell-like minerality. Juice and skins are fermented together to reveal a luminous copper orange color and create more intense aromas and structure. An unctuous, lush mouthfeel complimented by mouth-watering acidity and a rounded, nutty finish. Erbaluce di Caluso, Ferrando ‘La Torrazza’, Piemonte 2012 38 N Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Montenidoli ‘Fiore’, Toscana 2012 38 N/W Etna Bianco, Graci, Sicilia 2013 (Carricante, Catarratto) 38 N Sauvignon Blanc, Venica & Venica ‘Ronco delle Mele’, Collio, Friuli 2014 48 N Chenin Blanc, Nicolas Joly, Les Vieux Clos, Savennières, Loire 2013 72 N 2 7.30.16 Bianco -lavish & richGrillo/Viognier, Feudo Arancio ‘Dalila’, Sicilia 2013 glass/ ½ glass/ quartino/bottle 9 4.5 12 28 N -A great alternative for the Chardonnay lover, decadent and reminiscent of the sunlight in Sicily. Overripe tropical fruit, orange blossom, and honey cakes. A native to the island compliments an international varietal with a light touch of oak to create a unique, dreamy pair. Chenin Blanc, Domaine Pichot ‘Le Peu de la Moriette’, Vouvray, Loire 2015 9 4.5 12 28 N -A perfumed nose of ripe pineapple. The palate is juicy with baked apple, cinnamon, cloves, licorice. This off dry wine is balanced by a refreshing acidity. Turbiano, Ottella ‘Le Creete’, Lugana, Lombardia 2014 10 5 13.5 33 -Aromas of jasmine, honeysuckle & tropical fruit, the juicy palate offers peach, pear and green apples. Fresh acidity brightens the flavors while a mineral vein & an herbal note add depth. Soave Classico, Gini, Veneto 2014 10 5 13.5 33 N th -From a family rooted in the area since the 18 century, Gini is a standard of quality in the region. Made from the Garganega grape, the wine offers up electrifying meyer lemon, candied fruit, and overripe tree fruits. Falanghina, Terredora di Paolo, Campania 2014 10 5 13.5 33 -One of the three white varietals native to Campania, Falanghina has ancient roots in the southern part of Italy. A wine of incredible balance, expect bright floral notes, toastiness from extended lees aging, subtle licorice, and tart finger limes. Chardonnay, Maison Moillard, Burgundy 2014 11.50 5.75 15 38 N -Rich, round, and aromatic with notes of citrus and a hint of oak and vanilla. Verdeca, Masseria Li Veli, Valle d’Itria, Puglia 2013 (Verdeca, Fiano Minutolo) 28 Cortese di Gavi, Il Poggio di Gavi, Piemonte 2014 28 N Fiano, San Salvatore ‘Pian di Stio’, Paestum, Campania 2015 500ml 38 N Chardonnay, Bruno Rocca ‘Cadet’, Langhe, Piemonte 2013 48 N -macerated & orangeTrebbiano/Malvasia/Verdicchio/Grechetto, Monastero Suore Cistercensi ‘Coenobium Ruscum’ Bianco, Lazio 2012 43 N -An ancient technique for producing wine dating back to 3000 BC, white grapes are left in contact with their skins for an extended period of time resulting in a fuller, more tannic, & pleasantly unusual wine with an amber hue. While this wine, modernly known as ‘orange wine’, took on great popularity in the Friuli region of Italy where producers such as Josko Gravner and Radikon embraced the historic style, it has now spread throughout the world’s wine producing regions. This organic vineyard north of Rome is lovingly tended by a small group of Cistercian nuns. With the assistance of noted ‘natural’ winemaker Giampiero Bea, they produce an intriguing and beautifully peculiar wine bursting with notes of orange rind, saffron, cherry, dried mango, and Crenshaw melon with a firm mineral backbone & spritely acidity. A long lightly tannic finish with a hint of salty savoriness allows this wine even to pair with roasted meats and game. 3 7.27.2016 rosso -delicate but livelyglass/ ½ glass/ quartino/bottle Alicante (Grenache)/Carignan, Ampeleia ‘Unlitro’, Toscana 2014 7 3.5 9 28 N/W -This 1-litre bottle from superstar winemaker Elisabetta Foradori has flavors that are pure & lively with no oak to interfere with the myriad aromas of wildflowers, forest fruit, red berries, & subtle spices. A lingering hint of sweetness is balanced with refreshing acidity on the finish. This is both a lovely sipping wine & food pairing wine. Nero d’Avola, Cantina Colosi, Sicilia 2014 9 4.5 12 28 -A temperamental, thin-skinned varietal believed to be indigenous to the Island of Sicily, although a small amount is found in Calabria. Notes of over-ripe blackberry and cinnamon, complimented by a pleasant horsey aroma. Pinot Noir, Tolloy, Dolomiti, Alto-Adige 2013 9 4.5 12 28 -An international varietal has found a home nestled between the Austrian border to the north and the Dolomiti Mountains to the south in one of the northernmost regions of Italy. A cool climate and high elevation allows for a beautiful development of gravel-like minerality with an elegant balance of tart cranberries and stewed tomatoes. Grignolino d’Asti, Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta, Piemonte 2015 10 5 13.5 33 -Deceptively light in color, but with tons of flavor, this delightful red made from 100 % indigenous Grignolino, has excellent fruit and is pleasantly tannic. Will pair well with just about everything. Served chilled, a perfect summer wine. Frappato, Tami’, Sicilia 2014 33 N/W -From the pioneer natural winemaker Arianna Occhipinti, who released her first vintage at age 21, this wine is fresh, fruity, & juicy with ripe strawberry & raspberry flavors balanced with a clean fresh acidity. Barbera d’Alba, Domenico Clerico ‘Trevigne’, Piemonte 2011 43 N Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico, Azienda Agricola COS, Sicilia 2011 (Nero d’Avola, Frappato) 48 N Nerello Mascalese, Passopisciaro, Mt. Chianti Classico, Il Brunone (Sangiovese, Canaiolo) 2009 10 5 13.5 33 N -From a vineyard originally founded in 1343 as part of the estate of the Abbey of Pontignano. This wine exhibits a fruity bouquet with hints of spice, wild berries, vanilla. On the palate it offers well balanced and round tannins, with notes of preserved sour cherries and dried oregano. Rosso di Montalcino, Donatella Cinelli Colombini, Toscana 2014 11.5 5.75 15 38 N/W -Colombini has a unique operation in the fact that every person involved in the production of the wine is a woman. Produced from the Sangiovese Grosso clone, Rosso is made as a younger, more vibrant example of the wines of Montalcino. However, this example features alluring aromas of leather and dusty books that compliment a palate of supple red fruit and cinnamon. Nebbiolo d’Alba, Roagna Igino, Piemonte 2013 13 6.5 17.5 43 N -A small producer, only available in Texas outside of Italy. A more vibrant example of the same grape used in Barolo & Barbaresco, Nebbiolo is bursting with concentrated dried fruit, savory mushrooms, & a light floral quality. Classic notes of Amarone can be found in this wine but with more restraint and freshness. Ripe black fruit with notes of liquorice & clove, a long velvety finish. Aglianico del Vulture, Grifalco, Basilicata 2012 10 5 13.5 33 -A wine that truly represents the quality of garrigue, a term used to describe the low bush growing throughout the southern parts of Italy comprised of fragrant plants, herbs, and juniper. Aglianico is sometimes referred to as the Barolo of the south for its firm tannins and age-worthy quality.
