Dear Friends of Fox,
Fall means “back to school” and not just for kids. For woodworkers, it’s
time to head back to the workshop to start new projects, learn some new
tips, and complete some half-finished pieces before Christmas comes. In
fact, during this “back to school” season, the only difference between the
kids and the woodworkers is the smile on the woodworker’s face.
Just how much do we really
know about wood anyway?
“Perhaps because we are not master carvers ourselves, it’s
easier for us to stand back in awe of the work that we see
come across our desks. And because we’re your biggest fans,
it will always be our greatest delight and pleasure to see
where your creativity and skill take you. What excites me,
and drives our products, is a simple love of craftsmanship and
design. I love the creativity of woodcarving—the sheer magic
of someone grabbing a hunk of wood and making it beautiful
through their own skill and unique vision.”
While I recently wrote the lines above for WCI’s Tenth Anniversary, I
don’t want to leave the opposite impression that just because we are
always seeking the best artisans to create books for us that we don’t
know anything about wood. We’re just humble, not stupid!
With that in mind, I know you’ll find lots to enjoy inside our 2007 Catalog.
We keep discovering talented authors, fresh projects, and the latest
information-packed books to elevate the skills of any curious and
enthusiastic carver, scroller, turner, and woodworker.
Among the new 2007 books featured on pages 1-11, we’re proud to
announce that Fox Chapel’s partnership with the Boy Scouts of America
continues to grow: Pinewood Derby Speed Secrets, the best-selling derby
guide, has been followed up with Pinewood Derby Designs and Patterns
– the ultimate guide for building the coolest car. And, in an effort to promote
the craft of woodworking in this age of video games, we’re very excited
to publish Woodworking Kidskills, an excellent “beginner” book that will
develop hand-tool skills and a “can-do” attitude that will last a lifetime.
In conjunction with the 10th Anniversary of our own Woodcarving
Illustrated Magazine, we’re proud to announce a new WCI-branded
books series – a collection that features handpicked projects and carvers:
Santa Showcase and Caricature Carvers Showcase are the first two titles
in this great new series.
Not to be outdone, Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts is launching
its first branded collection with Intarsia Woodworking Projects – which
features a pattern pouch of our own invention to hold the fullsize blueprints
that accompany the book.
We continue to partner with our friends over at Woodworker’s Journal –
three new releases bring the Best of WWJ up to six in this very useful and
popular series.
There’s always something new to learn – and as you head back to your
workshop this fall, we truly hope you load up on some of our great new
books. Our satisfaction came in producing each book – now it’s your turn
to have some fun.
Happy woodworking!

a centered groove first. This eliminates
as much waste as possible before
switching to the dovetail bit and forming
the dovetail groove (see Figure 9 on
page 34).
When you cut the grooves, also
cut the same groove in a gauge made
of the same stock as the breadboard
ends. (Use the scrap crosscut from the
panel, for example.) The gauge should
be about 4" long.
The next process is to cut a mating
dovetail on both ends of the panel (see
Figure 10). Don’t touch the bit as you
change over the table setup. You need
to use the same height setting for the
tail that you did for the slots. Just shift
the fence to house all but an edge of the
bit. Make setup cuts on your scraps of
36
long. Then, rip the strip into two 1½"wide strips. Halve one strip, miter the
ends, and glue them to the lid.
After the glue is dry and any
squeeze-out cleaned up, rout the
quarter-round with a ¾"-radius
roundover bit. The pilot bearing will
hang below the profile, so you must
use an edge guide to control the cut.
When you are done, sand the
molding well to remove the mill marks.
the lid stock, sneaking up on the width
of dovetail that fits the grooves you’ve
already cut. When the fence setting is
perfect, cut a dovetail across each end.
Now, miter the breadboard ends
and the strip ripped from the panel. The
ends are easy, but the panel strip must
fit just right. The miter-to-miter distance
must exactly match the shoulder-toshoulder length of the lid. Miter one end
of the strip, and then clamp it to the
panel to mark the opposite end.
To help align the mitered element
with the lid when regluing it to the lid,
use biscuits. After mitering the ends,
clamp the strip in place, mark the biscuit
locations, and then cut the slots.
Assemble the lid. First, drive the
breadboard ends onto the dovetails—
no glue, remember. It helps to clamp
the front strip to the panel—again, no
glue—while you do this. Then, remove
the strip, spread glue along its edge and
on the miters, and remount it. Install
clamping forms for flat miters to the
lid as you do this, so you can apply a
clamp perpendicular to each miter.
Adding the Lid Molding
The lid molding consists of two profiles
routed on the same piece of wood.
Because it’s easier to glue and clamp it
to the lid while it’s square, hold off routing
the large quarter-round profile until after
the molding is glued in place on the lid.
Rout the Roman ogee profile before
mounting it. Mill this ogee on both
edges of a strip about 3" wide and 52"

the inside face. To accommodate

barrel, the chest leaf must be recessed
into the chest back. Form a notch in the
top rail that’s about ½" deep.
Mount the hinges to the lid first.
Line them up on the underside with the
hinge pins parallel to the edge. (It may
not be perfectly square, but that’s the
charm of handmade hardware.) Then,
screw them in place. Set the lid and
hinges on the top back edge of the
chest, and mark along the hinges in the
chest edge. Cut the notches. I found
that I could set the lid in place, with the
hinges down in the notches and the
prop holding the lid open. It stayed that
way, freeing my hands for drilling pilots
and driving the remaining screws.
Finishing Up
I used multiple coats of Waterlox to
finish my chest. I brushed on the first
and second coats and then applied
subsequent coats with a soft, lint-free
cloth. A rubdown with fine steel wool
between coats ensured a smooth finish.
Clean up all the dust and debris with
tack cloths before applying more finish.
This dream project was a long time
in the works, but as you can see by the
results, it was well worth the wait. Good
luck with yours!

There are many “right”
ways to paint a carving.
The style
you choose depends on
personal preference and
the type
of carving that you are
finishing.
Some carvers use stain
for a natural finish, or light
washes of color to allow
the grain of the wood to
show

to basecoat their carvings
and
totally cover the wood.
Whatever your preference,
there is more to a good
paint job than just applying
the color. To illustrate how
dramatically different
painting techniques can
affect the look of a carving,
I’ve

Although I used paint to add
color to Santa’s face, I chose
to accent
the natural wood with a simple,
light stain. Brush the stain
over the
carving, then use a soft rag
to wipe the excess stain off
immediately.
This will leave subtle shading
in the crevices to highlight
shapes and
texture. I apply a simple satin
finish to complete the carving.
Some
carvers dip their piece in boiled
linseed oil; others apply a spray
lacquer or polyurethane.
Santa Showcase
The grain of the wood is clearly
visible through the light washes
of
paint. Create a color wash by
thinning acrylic paints with
water or a
flow medium. You can create
a wash with oil paints by adding
paint
thinner. The washes add color,
but still show that the piece
is carved
from wood. Darken areas by
applying multiple coats. To
avoid
raising the grain during the
painting process, apply a clear
sanding
sealer or wet the wood slightly
and re-sand it before painting.
Using a solid basecoat combined
with shading and highlights
covers the entire carving. With
this technique, you do not
dilute
your paint. After applying
the basecoat, use a slightly
darker tone
of the same color to shade
the deep areas or areas where
shadows
would naturally fall. Select
a lighter tone of the base color
to add
highlights to the higher areas
of the carving. Blending the
three
tones to avoid sharp lines is
an essential skill to master.

Part 2 – Practice
Figure 1.5. With just a
few assorted tip styles the
variable-temperature tool
will create a wide variety
of tonal values, line
widths, and textures.
Variable-temperature burning
tools are more
expensive than the one-temperat
ure tools. Often,
the cost of a basic set-up,
which includes the
thermostat unit and several
fixed-tip pens, begins
around $200. These types
of woodburning tools
may need to be purchased
through a specialty
store or directly through
the manufacturer.
The thermostat unit for
a variable-temperature
woodburner can be set
for any temperature range
from very cool, at setting
number 1, to extremely
hot, at setting number
10. This type of woodburner will reach temperatures
that are suitable
for many other hobbies
besides woodburning,
such as stencil cutting and
metal etching. The
burning pens are plugged
directly into the thermostat and have plenty
of electrical cord for easy
use at your worktable.
Figure 1.6. This is an
interchangeable tip
pen for the variable-
temperature tool. The
wire tips are secured to
the pen using set screws.
Interchangeable tip pens
do not conduct the heat
quite as evenly as fixed
pens do, however they
are an excellent choice
for specialty tips that you
may only use on occasion.

to get a smooth work flow.
Light and Dark Exercise Five:
Variable-temperature woodburning
pens are
available with either interchangeab
le wire tips or
permanently affixed wire
tips. A basic selection of
interchangeable tips includes
a writing tip, a small
or fine writing tip, a small
round tip, a flat shader,
and a large wire loop tip
(see Figure 1.5). These
tips will work well for 90
percent of your burning
projects. (The majority
of the burning projects
in
this book were done using
only the writing tip and
the small round tip.) Because
I use a large writing
tip most often, I chose
to purchase a fixed-tip
pen
with this tip.
Special interchangeable
tips are available with
profiles for very specific
purposes (see Figure 1.6).
Fish scale wire tips can
be obtained in many different sizes and shapes depending
on the fish pattern
you are burning. Feather
tips, circles, and squares
are also easy to find.
Most tips for this type of
woodburning pen,
whether permanently affixed
or interchangeable,
are created with wire that
is bent into the different
tip profiles. The tool tip
changes temperatures
quickly with little waiting
time between heat
adjustments. This means
you can move from a
low heat setting to a higher
setting within a few
seconds, keeping a smooth
work flow during a
burning session (see Figure
1.7).
