Whether they’re donating food for a Life Skills graduation celebration, or sending a group of volunteers to re-mulch a playground, they find meaningful ways to improve the lives of the people we serve. This winter, Whole Foods treated the kids living on our campus to a two-hour private skating party at their rooftop rink. “For many of the kids, this was their first time ice skating,” explains Children’s Services Director Yvette Mendoza Rouen. “They were so resilient and brave, skating, falling, and getting right back up. They were unbelievably good at it! We’ve never had the opportunity to take a group ice skating before, because it would be too expensive. Everyone laughed a lot and had a great time.” Children’s Services staff members Amanda Maicach and Andrea Cuellar enjoyed the party as much as the kids Thanks to Whole Foods for helping create happy memories for the kids in our care! Denim Day is April 23, 2014 April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and a great way to participate and raise awareness is to wear denim on April 23, Denim Day. Sexual assault survivors often find themselves put on trial, asked “what were you wearing, how much did you have to drink, why were you there?” When people are mugged, no one blames them for inviting the crime by carrying a wallet. But our society often responds to survivors of sexual assault with mistrust and suspicion, convinced that they aren’t telling the truth or did something to invite the crime. Wear denim on April 23 and show your commitment to ending rape culture and victim blaming. Make the most of DENIM DAY: Saturday, April 12, 2014 Westin Austin at The Domain 11301 Domain Drive, Austin, Texas 78758 GET TICKETS TODAY! • Host a SafePlace information booth • Ask your employer to invite a SafePlace speaker to your workplace • Turn Denim Day into a fundraiser for SafePlace—collect $5 from employees to wear jeans to work, or host a donation drive • Request SafePlace brochures and palm cards to display for employees and clients Contact SafePlace Community Organizer Amy Allen, AAllen@SafePlace.org for more information. www.safeplace.org/adaytoshine AllState Foundation & Bank of America Support Clients Families who come to SafePlace often need more than a few weeks in our emergency shelter to be able to truly rebuild their lives in safety. At SafePlace, extensive transitional services are available to survivors through our Supportive Housing Program, a 16-week Life Skills course, counseling, child care, and assistance with financial and employment planning. SE U O H N E P O G IN SP R Come see how your support helps to end violence against women, children and men in Central Texas. The Allstate Foundation and Bank of America both made recent grants in support of this work. These two funders recognize the importance of giving survivors the tools they need to leave our campus in safety, with confidence and a plan to help them succeed in building violence-free lives. We are very grateful for their support! 2 f r one o o f P V RS e n Hous e p O o tw nities to oppor tu el er z Ari Stu 573 or .1 6 5 3 . 2 at 51 el@ astuerz .org. ce safepla April 29 and May 1 at Noon!
