In an era distinguished by a search for a healthier life and a quest for essential values, phytotherapy and food supplements are gaining ever-increasing support from consumers worldwide. w w w. a r k o p h a r m a. c o m Outstanding events in 2013 2013: A year of success and growth A 7.8% increase in consolidated sales is further proof of the Arkopharma Group’s dynamism on the French and International markets and of its strong principles that are recognised by its main clients and partners: Expertise, Innovation, Performance, Quality & Safety and Customer Service. On the French Market, Arkopharma recorded an 8.8% increase in sales. Pharmacists remained loyal to Reinforcement of cross-media communication strategies The year 2013 saw the integration of a media service into the heart of the marketing department, with the aim of optimising media strategies and reinforcing media and cross-media tools. The media goal of Arkopharma Laboratories is to inform and educate the consumer about the Group’s phytotherapy, aromatherapy and homeopathy products. In 2013, the Lipofein Fat Burner medical device received significant press attention. Lipofein stood out thanks to a powerful slogan “Enjoy eat all without guilt” and the choice of a daring and off-thewall graphic design. This did not escape the Blog des tendances (the “trend website”), which declared the communication campaign their favourite advert. the Group’s leading brands in recognition of their quality and the many new products introduced in 2013 and 2014 were positively received, especially Supraflor, which had very promising results on the probiotics market, and new phytotherapy and aromatherapy products such as: Arkocaps Resveratrol, Organic Arkofluids BurdockHeartsease, Organic Arkofluids Birch Juice, Veinoflux, Arko Essentiel Katrafay, Arko Essentiel Lavandin abrialis and many others… As internet users became increasingly mobile, Arkopharma cleverly Agreements developed with pharmacists associations (79% of French pharmacies belong to at least one association) allow for sales agreements and trade-marketing projects in order to optimise the web-ranking of the Group’s products and member sales. integrated this evolution in the way we access the internet into its Marketing strategy, by completely overhauling its websites with Responsive Design. This technology effectively allows a website to adapt to all devices (smartphone or tablet, for example) for optimum browsing. This measure is also joined by specific agreements established with central purchasing offices which are also often linked to pharmacist associations. This year was also defined by the powerful increase in awareness of social communities and networks thanks to the blogosphere, Facebook and Twitter especially. These new forms of communication Furthermore, the Sales Promotion support service has developed the services provided for pharmacists and assisted them in increasing their sales: merchandising, training and Phyto days, promotion, etc. allowed Arkopharma to provide its customers with regular updates, as well as to respond to their questions and develop a special relationship with them. And finally, medical visits with GPs and specialist doctors (urologists In 2014, important partnerships were developed with the main online health establishments, which increased the visibility of the Group’s products and improved their reputation. and gynaecologists) continued and it was decided that midwives would be targeted in 2013, as they are increasingly involved in medical gynaecology. The availability of medical visits is also reinforced at the level of hospital services, with specifically adapted presentations, and regional conferences. And finally, video also made its mark with the launch of a web series intended to educate the greater public about the use and benefits of medicinal plants. The first season was 6 episodes long. 6 PRIX BEAUTÉ Consumer approval and confidence Readers and consumers of the magazine Avantages voted for their favourite beauty and care products in their annual elections. EFT commitment (ECOCERT Fair Trade) The year 2013 also saw Arkopharma Laboratories join the United Nations Global Compact. This means that Arkopharma upholds the Ten Principles of the Global Compact in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption and also declares its commitment to spreading these principles within its realm of influence and their integration into its corporate strategy and sales culture. Online journalists (websites and blogs) equally contributed to this success thanks to the increasing number of • Competitive retail prices; • An extensive sales force; • A capacity of innovation; • A multi-channel approach: advertising/ online/sales promotion/medical visits. * Good Manufacturing Practices 7 Nature, efficiently A philosophy Phytotherapy and nutrition therapy, those natural medicines, provide a particularly good solution to the “ills of civilisation” brought on by stress, poor diet and an unhealthy lifestyle. They meet the need to “feel good” and to keep in shape, one of the aspirations most strongly felt in our developed societies. ARKOPHARMA, European leader in natural medicines Preventing and curing, naturally, efficiently and safely. For more than 30 years, the Arkopharma Group has demonstrated its creativity and innovatory flair, directing its research and development entirely towards humans, their health and their wellbeing. 45,000 DOCTORS IN FRANCE say they prescribe natural medicines. (Source ICOMED datas) ARKOPHARMA KEY FIGURES : With a catalogue of more than 1 000 non-reimbursable products, ARKOPHARMA covers every sphere of selfmedication. On the nutritional supplements market, (without product licences for medicine and non-reimbursable selfmedication), representing 46.3 m of sold units, Arkopharma has a leading place, holding a 17.1 % market share. (Source: IMS nutritional supplements, sell out- dec. 2013) 9 Nowadays, French enthusiasm for natural treatments is equalled in all developed countries, where there is increasing mistrust of chemical medicines. This is more than a fashion, it reflects a deep desire for a return to nature, intensified by the disclosure of sideeffects, perhaps even toxic, caused by some chemical medicines. This situation explains the success enjoyed by phytotherapy, dietetics, nutritherapy and homeopathy, which satisfy the lasting need felt by consumers seeking balanced, natural and healthy living. These “health products” developed by the Arkopharma Group meet two requirements: prevention and cure while maintaining the body’s equilibrium and treating the root cause rather than the symptom. They enable consumers to take charge of their own health, with all the product quality and safety guarantees that can be provided by a pharmaceutical company. The launch, in 1997, of 100% plant-based capsules provided an additional guarantee and reassured consumers concerned for their health. The constant advances made in phytotherapy, particularly the identification of new active principles, new pharmacological properties and the performance of numerous clinical trials validating the efficacy of the treatments, have contributed to the success of this “other medicine”. w w w. a r k o p h a r m a. c o m ARKOPHARMA, a healthcare company A diversified range comprising more than 1000 lines makes it possible to cover all self-medication areas. Freeze grinding The 100% plant-based capsule Medicinal plants contain thousands of constituents, all potentially active and acting synergetically. In order to make the best use of them, ARKOPHARMA has developed the use of the whole powder of the active part of the plant. In 1997, ARKOPHARMA made news by offering the first range of 100% plant-based products, thus confirming its status as phytotherapy leader: indeed, in that year, the gelatin traditionally used for the capsule shell was replaced by a natural substitute of vegetable origin, a cellulose derivative. Cellulose surrounds and protects the cells of all plants. The 100% plant-based capsule is entirely natural and contains no gluten or preservatives. After strict, rigorous selection of plants and performing numerous botanical, bacteriological and physico-chemical controls ensuring perfect quality and optimum efficacy, the plants are freeze ground in a nitrogen atmosphere at –196°. Using this efficient technique, ARKOPHARMA has been able to ensure total efficacy. Freeze grinding makes it possible to retain the whole of the plant, to ensure a high active principle content and to obtain a particularly fine particle size, making assimilation easier and improving bioavailability. It is Arkopharma’s incessant innovative thrust and its quest for ever-better quality that enabled it quickly to become no. 1 in phytotherapy in France. The scientific value of its products is officially recognised, since Arkopharma holds more than 43 Product Licences for phytotherapy medicines, issued by the “Agence Nationale de Sécurité du Médicament et des Produits de Santé”. The Group has modern, well-diversified equipment comprising about 90 machines or production lines making it possible to deal with most pharmaceutically manufactured galenic forms (powder and oil capsules, tablets, liquid and cosmetic forms). ARKOPHARMA’s know-how has enabled it to introduce innovations using an original manufacturing procedure applied to phytotherapy: freeze-grinding. Freeze-grinding This industrial technology was used for the first tine by ARKOPHARMA for medicinal plants in 1985. Freeze-grinding or grinding in liquid nitrogen at-196°C preserves the whole of the plants’ active principles, intact. It provides a powder with optimum particle size and thus promotes the active principles’ bioavailability. It also improves productivity by making grinding easier. The production unit, operated by computer-aided production management software “SAP”, meets the firm’s growth requirements by providing a very large production capacity. The methodology implemented to develop our improvement plans lies in work groups that combine the professions and skills that we have at our disposal. This participatory working method, both effective and motivating, allows us to coherently improve our productivity, the quality of our products and services as well as the working conditions of our collaborators. These 3 plants, which are fully complementary, provide the Group with a significant production capacity to meet the needs of its clients. Moreover, the Group’s full compliance with diverse pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic regulations guarantees high quality products and rigorous production expertise. Thanks to these means of production, the Arkopharma Group can respond favourably to market demands, both in terms of volume and regulations. With a strong focus on customers, management of the entire industrial process is completely SAP-integrated, starting when an order is placed and continuing until it has been shipped. This integration represents a major asset for the Arkopharma Group and its customers because it ensures planning consistency for sourcing, manufacturing and inspection with market needs managed through sales and order forecasts. Our industrial evolution aims above all for permanent research into the effectiveness of our installations and organisations. This research is confirmed by the constant drive to improve our customer service, our industrial costs, our command for quality products and respect for the regulations we are subject to. A team of sales promoters travels throughout France: its mission is to support, train and guide the pharmacy teams in showcasing the product lines, advising and selling Group products. This network was completed in 2011 by a new network of sales in order to support the launch of products in pharmacies with great potential. A network of medical representatives keeps gynecologists and general practitioners regularly informed about a selection of the Group’s products that meet medical needs. As internet users became increasingly mobile, Arkopharma cleverly integrated this evolution in the way we access the internet into its Marketing strategy, by completely overhauling its websites with Responsive Design. This technology effectively allows a website to adapt to all devices (smartphone or tablet, for example) for optimum browsing. This year was also defined by the powerful increase in awareness of social communities and networks thanks to the blogosphere, Facebook and Twitter especially. These new forms of communication allowed Arkopharma to provide its customers with regular updates, as well as to respond to their questions and develop a special relationship with them. And finally, video also made its mark with the launch of a web series intended to educate the general public about the use and benefits of medicinal plants. The first season was 6 episodes long. In 2013, ARKOPHARMA has worked to establish new assessment procedures for plants resulting from the industrial procedure (Environment, Health & Safety) module of the SAP software package. In order to control the exposure of each worker to chemical risk, chemical risk exposure sheets are also established with the medical team. Over the course of the year 2013, the EHS module of our ERP (SAP) was updated, in order to respond to new regulatory demands. This (infused plants and plant powders) as well as for polyethylene long process of updating all the documents relating to chemical risks conditioning articles. will continue in 2014. 30 Industrial risk Our installations are regularly monitored and maintained, and regulatory periodic checks are made. Given our numerous storage and distribution activities as well as our processes that include flammable materials, fire is one of our major risks. High performance operational and organisational security systems ensure that our employees are permanently up to date on the measures to be taken for fire risk prevention and emergency responsiveness. In 2013, Arkopharma updated its internal operating plan, in order to improve its performance in terms of safety, by defining prevention measures and conduct rules to follow for each emergency situation. Investments in Environmental Protection and Safety As part of our continual improvement policy, ARKOPHARMA continues to make investments to improve its installations, tools and production processes. These significant efforts help endow us with a more efficient working tool and include environmental protection dimensions as well as the health and safety of people outside and inside the firm. In 2013, investments were made due to new regulatory measures or, in particular, to cover certain areas of safety in our installations. Efforts were also made to control the potential impact on the environment and use of energy resources and effluents. As we remain convinced that the success of our policy on safety and the environment lies in each individual’s involvement and wiliness to take responsibility, we also invest in training programs to enhance all of our employees’ skills. 31 w w w. a r k o p h a r m a. c o m Our social responsibility: Manage and Develop the employees skills Managing and Developing skills Constantly endeavouring to increase its level of competitiveness, thanks to the continually improved skills of its personnel, the Arkopharma Laboratories are focusing on the development of expertise. Today, priority is placed on developing loyalty and motivating the company’s staff members in order to ensure the Group’s sustainability. For the past several years, a management policy has been implemented using the predictive management of jobs and skills approach. Tools such as an Arkopharma trades reference guide as well as job and description definitions for each staff member are used. The goals behind this process are: - Better clarification of job limits, thanks to a comparison that measures the job requirements for a specific position and the capability and skills of the employees; Better clarification of the link between the various components in the organisation in order to ensure a transversal dimension and improve communication; A more coherent remuneration system; Increased internal mobility thanks to an intranet that enables each agreements are negotiated concerning various themes that boost the quality of the social context, in a common approach to the company’s success as well as the success of those who work in the company. Social protection : a priority Social protection has always been one of the ARKOPHARMA Group’s main concerns. A new contract was negotiated in this aim with the managing organisations enabling us to once again and in a socially positive manner develop this component of compensation. The Group is constantly looking to improve its employees’ conditions concerning healthcare coverage. For that purpose, the Group was equipped with services of a social worker who helps the employees in their personal problems. Besides, the retirements, more and more numerous, and the modifications of the Law, motivated the Group to set up a service of personalized assistant. Dialogue : giving preference to nearness Verbalisation meetings are held regularly in each Department. The aim is to enable staff members to express their feelings to their superiors concerning matters that are of importance to them. This contact, regarded as a special time for exchanging views, is a definite driving force in the development of the Group’s Human Resources policy Social dialogue also takes form in the quality of the relationships maintained between labour and management; several significant 32 Quality, assured Commitment and Quality Policy To continue to grow by placing the client at the heart of our values and strategy, by offering our clients products that are innovative, safe and of high quality, designed, manufactured and distributed in compliance with normative and regulatory guidelines, (quality, safety, environmental), and a good value for the money. w w w. a r k o p h a r m a. c o m Garantees Quality The commitment made by the Arkopharma Laboratories to provide high quality products is ensured by complying with the following standards and certifications: Dietary products and dietary supplements ISO 22000 The Arkopharma Laboratories have received ISO 22000 certification for the creation, development, manufacture, storage and distribution of its dietary products and dietary supplements. Quality management by processes Our Quality Management System is based on a “process” approach, represented by a diagram that shows the steps and interactions between identified processes. We have established three different processes: - The “management” process to define, analyze and attribute the resources necessary to the company’s oriented focus. - The “achievement” process, in direct contact with the client. - The “means” process, which is essential for creating a product, yet doesn’t directly involve the client. Each process has a detailed process specification sheet (PSS) and a designated pilot. The measurement and surveillance tools that are associated with each process are defined in the process specification sheet. The Quality Management System documentation is represented by the pyramid below, which includes, at the top, the Quality manual, followed by the process specification sheets, the procedures, instructions and registrations. A worldwide presence in more than 60 countries due to a dynamic policy of distribution contracts. w w w. a r k o p h a r m a. c o m International horizons During 2013, the Arkopharma Group experienced sustained growth in exports, especially in the second half of the year, despite important changes to regulations. Despite the very delicate economic context, especially in southern Europe, the final accounts from the International Department for 2013 were altogether promising. This took into account the difficulties experienced in the first half of 2013 due to changes to various European regulations regarding claims, which led to numerous shortages in products that albeit temporary were nonetheless penalising. With revenue of € 97.3 m and 6.7% growth compared to International revenue in 2012, the department stood out especially for its excellent sales dynamics among distributors in emerging areas, DOM-TOM (French Overseas Departments and Territories) and also among distribution branches which all experienced growth, except Switzerland and Italy. These excellent dynamics began in summer 2013 and continued into the beginning of 2014. In Spain, the pharmaceutical market began to recover, following the economic difficulties of previous years, and our sales point-oriented sales policy yielded results, allowing us to progress ahead of the market. Belgium and Holland confirmed interesting progress in keeping with development in previous years. Switzerland underwent a slight contraction, due to rapid distribution chains taking lesser stock. After a difficult start to 2013, Italy ended the year on a high note with double figure growth in the last half of the year. The Irish branch which supplies the Eastern European markets upped production in late 2013 to meet increases in demand from our partners in Eastern Europe and Russia. Mix/Products Phytotherapy showed excellent levels of growth, thanks to restocking by our partners but also the absence of any competition. The other ranges that contributed to our final revenue were: Expert Skin® (hyaluronic acid) or Resveradox® (Resveratrol) in the nutricosmetics range, probiotics to balance intestinal flora, maintain energy and sustain immune defences, phials of royal jelly and Acerola 1000. Elsewhere, performance by established brands such as CYSCONTROL®/CRANBEROLA, as part of recurring cystitis treatment, or FORCAPIL®/ARKOCAPIL®, to treat hair and skin appendages, are worthy of note. These ranges continue to improve and consolidate their market areas in every country they have been launched in. Finally, it is worth mentioning an interesting pick-up in sales of our Plante System cosmetics range, which benefited from the launch of many flagship products and saw a gain in numerical distribution. Our distributors The Business Unit Export-Distributor experienced excellent development in 2013 with the launch of highly promising new brands both in the Arkopharma Group’s core business and the cosmetics sector via its international brand PLANTE SYSTEM. Taking into account consolidated revenue of approximately € 14.8 m invoiced at the end of 2013 and added to revenue from Private Label, where invoices increased to € 2.8 m, overall sales to distribution partners increased by 25% in 2013. Performance recorded in the middle of this period is strongly connected to the Group’s clear evolution in the CIS (former USSR) as well as countries in south America where sales noticeably increased by +54% (Colombia, Ecuador). Surplus local stock held by our Chinese distributor heavily penalised invoicing for cosmetics products in that area, a dip compensated for by the launch of some very promising new brands in Asia (Japan, Korea and Thailand for cosmetics) and other activities in the Pacific area to maintain invoicing levels similar to those of 2012. Despite the dynamic growth of Jordanian, Iraqi and Lebanese brands, our activities in the MEA (Middle East Africa) area remained stable compared to 2012, following modifications to the regulatory perimeter of Saudi Arabia which had a negative impact on our exports (limitation on local stock) to this important representative in that area. 36 37 The Product Mix confirms the strategy implemented to promote the Arkopharma Group’s core business brands and notably the core areas: Women Care (CYS-CONTROL®-CRANBEROLA® / PHYTOSOYA®), Phytotherapy (ARKOCAPS®, ARKOFLUIDS®), Nutricosmetics & Cosmetics (FORCAPIL®, EXPERT SKIN®, Plante System®) and Slim, with over € 8.0 m worth of products sold in over 60 countries. Perspectives for 2014 AKOPHARMA Spain AKOPHARMA Switzerland AKOPHARMA Belgium AKOPHARMA Ireland AKOPHARMA Netherlands AKOPHARMA Italy While maintaining our differentiation and ‘phyto’ know-how, we will be aiming at sustained development within areas of high potential such as Asia, CIS areas and South America on the one hand and reinforcement of our position within Europe and the Middle East on the other.
