Use your Bible as a Prayer Book!
Most prayer books are 98 percent Scripture.
Rather than buying prayer books, you can
follow this simple pattern that will give you
options for prayer throughout the day. As
Catholics, we usually feel more comfortable
using a prayer book and we know we need
to read more Scripture. This handy way of
praying allows us to take care of both issues
at the same time.
To be most successful at praying through
Scripture, we must follow several rules:
are not on a time schedule to finish
books, get through the Psalms, etc.
We are on God’s time.

Continue here after reading Psalm 100
at the first prayer of the day.
Start here for the other prayers
throughout the day.

< We
< If
we miss a day or a time for prayer,
we need to follow James 2:23 and just
continue where we left off in Scripture.
< When
reading the Scripture passages,
focus on letting the Scriptures speak
to you rather than getting through big
chunks of reading.
< Place
the bookmarks in the following
places in your Bible.
PSALM 100 - place at Psalm 100
PSALMS - place at Psalm 1
SCRIPTURE - place at Mark 1

Catholic Faith. Welcoming Spirit.
Glory be to the Father, to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit...
Go to the Psalm bookmark and
read a section of Psalms.

“O God, come to my assistance.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father, to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit. As it was
in the beginning, is now and
will be forever. Amen.”

Read one section of the Psalms
indicated on the back of this bookmark
each time you pray.
The Psalms are poetry and are about
how a person feels, not necessarily
about being word-for-word truth.
Let your emotions flow with the writer
of the Psalms. How do you experience
God like the Psalmist does?
After Psalms, go to the Scripture bookmark.
Read and reflect on a Scripture
passage of your choice. Make the Sign
of the Cross as you begin to read.
Morning

Reading Scripture
As you read, focus on relating to
the Scripture you are reading. Each
type of Scripture is read differently.
Old Testament History Books—
Place yourself in the story as
one of the people, as a main
character or as an observer.
Prophets—
Hear how the prophets are
speaking to your life, or the
culture of your nation, state
or community.
Gospels—
Read one story at a time,
hearing Jesus speak to you.
Letters of the New Testament—
Ask yourself how you would feel
if you were Paul or Peter writing
these words. Ask yourself how
you would receive these words
knowing these are God’s words
through the writers.
<
Reflecting on Scripture
Spend a moment thinking
about what you have read.

Use your Bible as a Prayer Book!
We invite you to visit your Bible
throughout the day in a continuous
fashion, using these bookmarks as a
way to remember where to go. The point
is to not have a certain set of readings for
a particular day or time, but to go through
the Scriptures at certain points throughout
the day. If you miss a time, don’t double
up, just move on.
