Iniezione - Northwest Alfa Romeo Club
Iniezione The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club French & Italian Show Vancouver BC Each year, on Father’s Day, Vancouver BC hosts a wonderful car show on the grass at Waterfront Park in the Lonsdale area of North Vancouver. Though the temperature this year was cool, it’s proximity to the water and the views across to one of the worlds best cities, provides a really cool setting. It’s no cost to show, or attend with no judging or awards to hand out and the only rule is the car or motorcycle needs to be either French or Italian. This is just a very comfortable gathering of common interests. Previous shows have attracted NWARC members from Washington so this year, I made the trek to experience this show first hand. We have over a dozen members in the Vancouver BC area already so this gave me a chance to say hello to a few of them. I tracked down the event organizer, Fritz Duernberger, a long time Alfa fanatic and interesting guy. He had brought his nice green low mileage Alfa Berlina, yet we found ourselves talking about people and bicycles as much as anything else. Great guy and it was fun to see him in his element. With approximately 30 Alfas at the show, they were second only to the 40+ Ferraris that arrived. Citroen, Lamborghini, also had great turn out with a few Lancia, Fiat, Peugeot, Renault, and Maserati as well. Our NWARC member Ulrich Lanius brought out his GTA, while I also spotted George Bauman and Keith Stein wandering the event. The highlight of any event like this is seeing the rare cars you don’t often get to see. With Canada having a 15 year wait, rather than the US’s 25 year wait for non certified cars means that 1997 Alfa Romeos can be brought in legally just north of the border. A young guy brought his newly acquired 1996 Alfa Spider and I heard the importer, Clemente’s Auto Sport, may have helped as many as 4 of these come to the area. The silver GTV with NWARC July 2012 newsletter page 2 French & Italian WrapUp Cont’d... flared wheel wells was a car owned, raced, and enjoyed by the person for nearly 30 years. The gorgeous Giulietta Sprints gathered in a cluster numbered 4 cars at one point. My ears perked up when I heard a unique sound of a car arriving. I looked up to see an ultra rare Lancia Delta Integrale pulling onto the grass. Next I found a Renault R5 Turbo2, a bunch of Citroen 2CV in varying styles from sedans to vans. If there is any downside to this event, it is that there is a border to cross to attend. I have a challenge crossing into Canada because they somehow believe I’m a bad seed. I refuse to bring an Alfa across the border since I must spend an hour or more being searched and having the car taken apart… which includes damage being done during the inspection. This is an incredible invasion of personal space and the only happy endings I get are the cars at show. If you go in the future, don’t ride with me and you probably won’t have a challenge. Renault R5 Turbo2 While in Vancouver, enjoy this metropolitan city. From the new Sky and Cliff Walks at Capilano, the Grouse Mountain tower, Stanley Park, Gastown, Van Dusen Gardens, or the cools shops, bars, and eateries on Robson Street… there is so much to enjoy in the area in addition to the great Father’s Day car show. Cliff Walk at Capilano NWARC July 2012 newsletter page 4 President’s Column by Merril Gordon have to look at one later. Remember Dick & Jessica Camp? They hosted the NWARC for a BBQ the evening before our ½ Fast Lap in Eastern WA two years ago. Some months past I had asked for not so pleasant driving experiences. Here’s Jessica’s note: Summer Fun Any of you enjoying your Alfas yet this summer? I had a fun time with my GTV6 at our evening track day at Pacific Raceway June 13th. I did loose it in a big way on Turn 2 spinning out completely but staying on the pavement. Lost it right in front of Michael Harris and his GTV6. That was not my plan! The next day I swapped out my track tires for highway treads and drove to Eastern Oregon. My home town of Elgin has a one day festival including a small car show. I always enter one of my Alfas and win the long distance award. Upon return the mileage displayed 660 with fuel use showing 30mpg for the drive and 10mpg for the day at the track. Pretty respectable performance for a 30 year old Alfa I’d say. Decided to go have a look at one of those new Toyota/Scion/Subaru/FR-S/ BRZ 2+2 sports cars on Saturday. Isn’t that something of an Alfa-GTV6 competitor ? I think so. Couldn’t find one to have a look at though. The salesmen said they’re getting allotments and are currently filling orders already placed by buyers. The dealers love this as they can charge a premium for this first wave of interest, not so good for guys who have to be first on their block to have one. I have seen a few in those cars in the big parking lots where I work. AAAAaaaaa!!!!! Leading driver Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull F1 car just quit 65% into the race. Oh yeah, back to my article……I can see the factory’s point of view though, i.e. initial interest is always high on a new interesting car but fades after a year or so and settles to a lower sales rate. I can see production holding at that rate for the stability of quality control and supplier coordination. And limited supply always keeps the desirability and cool factor up. Anyway, will Dick bought our first Alfa in 1971. As he left Yakima for Seattle one day, he asked me my favorite color (yellow). When he returned, he had a yellow Spider. We had a lot of fun with it (before children). However, we also had two accidents before we ended up selling it after starting our family. The first accident took place in the middle of winter in Yakima with lots of snow on the ground and roads. I was going around a corner on my side of a small road when a big LTD Ford came from the opposite direction down the middle. I went for the side of the road, but didn’t have enough traction to get completely off when he hit me in the driver’s door. However, with all the snow, he ended up pushing me completely off the road leaving his car blocking the road both directions. I had to climb out the passenger door, unhurt, but a bit shook up. Long story short, he wanted to move the cars; I said, “Not until the police come”; he claimed it was a one way street (wrong); complained loudly to the policeman (who took photos); and when he left, the policeman asked me what really happened. When repaired a few weeks later, Dick was rear-ended on the Tacoma freeway in a freak hail storm, but was not injured. That is a story for another day. We now have two Spiders, and are enjoying them greatly! Not the results everyone wants, that’s for sure Jessica. Driving your Spider in the winter? Now that’s impressive! But for the rest of you Alfa drivers, let’s put some miles on those cars, even if it means taking a few days off when the sun is shining and you’re up for some scenery soaking. Nothing like an Alfa for those days. See you on the road, Merril Gordon President NWARC NWARC July 2012 newsletter page 5 NWARC July Club Meeting Normally he’s a club member, but at this meeting, Fred Wright will be our guest. He’ll be talking about the new race course, The Ridge Motorsports Park. It may include some construction pictures as well as how our members can use the track. When: Thursday, 10th 6:30 - 9:30 PM Where: Lombardi’s Cucina 695 NW Gilman Blvd Issaquah 98027 Many people have shared stories about driving the new race track near Shelton, WA. It has an excellent smooth surface, high & low speed portions, a variety of curves, elevation changes, and a turn every bit as fun as the corkscrew from Laguna Seca. Summer Drive August 25th! Come bring your favorite ALFA for a summer drive through the beautiful Snoqualmie Valley. Ken and Louisa Case have laid out a scenic and interesting route for us to use. The route includes beautiful valley views, some “off the beaten path” back roads (all paved) and some up close looks at Mount Si. Along the way we will stop for a tour of Camp Korey at the old Carnation Farm. Camp Korey is a children’s summer camp provided for children dealing with childhood illness or serious medical conditions. The camp was founded in 2005 by Tim Rose in memory of his son Korey who died of cancer at age 18. The programs at the camp are provided free so the kids can “raise a little hell” in spite of their situation. In 2008 the camp became part of seriousfun founded by Paul Newman. (campkorey.org) Later we will visit Jim Giordano’s Vintage Motors in Carnation. Jim has a showroom full of interesting old cars including a nice ALFA 164. I’m sure Jim would be happy to sell you any of his collection if you asked. (giocars.com) We will end our drive at Jay Berry’s in North Bend where we can all have a snack and tell each other what marvelous drivers we have been. We will be starting at the Starbucks in Redmond Town Center (7525 166 th Ave NE) at 11:00 AM. (Map available at redmondtownceter.com) The drive to North Bend is about 40 miles and we should reach there about 1:30 PM including generous time for our points of interest. Just the Facts... The Iniezione is the monthly newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club, a non-profit organization of Alfa Romeo enthusiasts. NWARC is a regional chapter of the national Alfa Romeo Owners Club (AROC). Chapter meetings are held the second Tuesday of most months except December. Membership dues are $63 per year, which includes subscriptions to either the digit and / or print versions of the Iniezione and the monthly national publication, Alfa Owner. For information about joining the club, contact the membership director listed in the right hand column. Opinions expressed in the Iniezione are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the club. (The author may simply be nuts!) Publication of articles describing technical procedures does not constitute an endorsement by the club, its officers, or AROC. Char had been one of the people helping put on the Monte Shelton NW Classic Rally and both of the Portland based national AROC conventions, and as a club officer and volunteer. “Spirited and passionate in her love of Alfas and AROO, never shy with an opinion, and never one to stand by while others worked. She jumped in and did whatever was needed and we have a fine club to show for her many efforts.” said Roger Dilts, President of Alfa Romeo Owners of Oregon (AROO) A celebration of Char’s life will be held on July 21st in Gervais, OR. Contact Gordy at 425-241-9307 if you want to carpool or caravan to the service. On June 2nd & 3rd SOVREN held their Festival of Speed at Spokane Raceway Park. The event went really well with plenty of good weather, lots of great racing, and plenty of Alfa Romeos. There were over ten NWARC members either racing or watching the event. Our June club meeting enjoyed a fantastic setting at Club Auto in Kirkland. We had a few new members attend, met the Hagerty Insurance people, heard fun details by Steve Anderson and Bill Gehring as they talked about their new 1957 Alfa Spider, and watched a couple movies. We first watched the movie Rendezvous, then a biography of Enzo Ferrari that featured plenty of Alfa content. Concorso Italiano on August 17, will be featuring Bertone and one of the rare cars on display will be the Alfa Romeo show car called the Navajo. Based on a Tipo 33 and utilizing extreme design lines, active aero features, this is well worth seeing! Per a Chrysler Group LLC press release, the new Alfa based Dodge Dart earned a #1 ranking on Kelley Blue Books’ “10 Coolest Cars under $18,000”. It’s almost as if the Alfa reputation is cool and it helps to sell cars! We’ll just have to see if that helps the Dodge, or hurts Alfa Romeos return. ABC Brianza has come out with another 1:43 scale miniature Alfa Romeo. This time it’s the Alfa truck, or Mille Cassonato. It comes as either a kit or finished truck with prices starting around $600. NWARC July 2012 newsletter page 7 More Alfa News If you didn’t go to the AROC National Convention (Alfa Canadese) in Toronto, you’re in luck. A few of our members did attend and at our August club meeting Gordy will be sharing stories and plenty of pictures he shot with his new camera and new eye for photos! Here are a few random shots from others just to wet your appetite. You’ll have to attend to see Gordy’s shots! These shots are from WINGED1 and Bob A from Kenosha, WI. The NWARC BBQ on June 29th went really well! Thanks to Gary & Marie Patitz for hosting and to all the nearly 50 people that attended. The food, location, cars, people, and even the weather were all exceptional. Thanks to Paul Affolter for the photos! NWARC July 2012 newsletter page 8 2012 Half Fast Lap Sept 15-17 Make Hotel Reservations Now!! Each year, NWARC enjoys a wonderful 3-day drive. Last year took us to the Tri-Cities, Palouse, a Snake River dam, and a wind turbine farm. Back in 2010, we wandered Mt. St. Helens, the Washington coast, and parts of the Olympic Peninsula. This year, our trip starts by heading south to the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge to see if any birds are on their Half Lap. Then to the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge with a couple quick stops before ending in The Dalles. Sunday, we head for the twisty roads and small towns of eastern Oregon before returning to The Dalles. Yes, we return to the same hotel. Staying in the same hotel, in a cool town makes our travelling easier but also allows people to stay behind who don’t want to drive twisty roads. On one of our two nights, we’ll make a quick visit to Goldendale for a tour and celestial education at the Goldendale Observatory. Our Monday brings us westbound through the Columbia River Gorge on the Oregon side. This allows a drive along the Historic Highway which is one of the nicest roads around, plus stops at a few of the fantastic waterfalls along the way. An optional stop for a little vino from one of the great Portland wineries before we drive the “exciting” run back north along I-5 to the Seattle. These Half Laps are always a great drive filled with great roads, wonderful people, educational opportunities, cool scenery, and a few stories to tell. If you have blood in your veins, you need to attend this event. The first step is to make your hotel reservation for our 2 night stay in The Dalles, Oregon at Cousins Country Inn. Call them at 800-848-9378. Ask for Barb and tell her you want a room from the block reserved for NWARC. Rooms are around $100 per night. Viva Italia July 14th Last Track Evening! When: July 18th 5PM—Dark Where: Pacific Raceways - Kent This is our last evening lapping event since it’s into the Evening. Register by June 8th to make sure there is space and food for you! Our third annual Viva Italia Car & Motorcycle show will be held on July 14th and once again, Columbia Winery will be our host location. Last year had around 60 total cars, with around 25 being Alfa Romeos. This is a great chance to enjoy sharing your Italian car or motorcycle with others… perfect garage queen, club racer, or dusty daily driver can all display side by side. The event opens at 10:30 AM and runs until 3:30 PM. Come when you can and leave when you need… this is an open attendance event. This is also a food and fundraiser for HopeLink, a local group supporting local families so try to remember to bring a donation. Columbia Winery 14030 Northeast 145th Street Woodinville This is always a great event and the long shadows and golden hours make for excellent photo ops if your not driving or working the event. Did you know that Alfas go faster in the evenings? Come on out and find out for sure! To drive, work turns, help with setup of the event, go to: www.nwarc.motorsportreg.com The gates are open by 4 PM and we try to start as early as possible after 5 PM. There will be plenty of track time so this is a great deal for the money… plus you only have to leave early from work. (No day off required.) NWARC July 2012 newsletter page 9 Maryhill Hillclimb Save The Dates: October 6, 7 2012 SOVREN’s featured marque will be Alfa Romeo at this year’s Maryhill Hillclimb and Concours. This event is held annually at the Maryhill Museum and on the Maryhill Loops Road. The Alfa Romeo Owners of Oregon (AROO) will be joining this event as well. The Maryhill Loops Road was first constructed from 1909 to 1913 by Samuel Hill (1857–1931), founder of Maryhill Museum of Art. The road ascends 850 feet in a series of 25 curves including 8 hairpins with a gradient of ascent at 5%.
