Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
I am so pleased to announce that we were recently informed that
Alderwood Elementary School is being recognized by our state by
being awarded the prestigious “Achievement Award for Overall
Excellence”. The Washington Achievement Awards celebrate the
state’s top-performing schools in multiple categories. Awardwinning schools share at least one common attribute: the power to
profoundly affect student learning. The category of Overall Excellence is awarded to schools in our state that score in the top 5% on
the Washington Achievement Index. Washington’s Achievement
Index is designed to identify and recognize the state’s highestachieving schools over a two-year period. The index . . .
Provides a fair and consistent measurement of Washington’s
public schools.
Presents a clear picture of how our schools and districts are
performing in five key outcomes, how they are improving over
time, how they compare to schools of similar demographics, and
whether they are closing achievement gaps.
I am incredibly proud of the consistent hard work on the part of our
students and staff, and I am so pleased that our school community is
able to receive this level of recognition. We really have an amazing
school filled with great people!

WHATS HAPPENING AT ALDERWOOD
BIKES for BOOKS! Alderwood Elementary is starting a new program
called Bikes for Books, which is an opportunity for your child to win a FREE
BIKE! The program is sponsored by the Bellingham Bay Masonic Lodge #44
who donated the bikes for students at Alderwood.
We will be holding a raffle in April for these bikes. For each week your child
spends at least 20 minutes a night reading, 5 nights a week, they will earn a
ticket for the raffle. They will take home a reading log and fill out the book
they read, for how long, and will need a parent or guardian signature. They
can earn one ticket a week each week leading up to our raffle, where we will
have two boy bikes and two girl bikes to give away.
The bikes will be awarded at our School Carnival on Friday, April 27, 2012
from 6-8 pm. Please encourage your child to read,
and sign their reading log so they can get a ticket!
Every child has an equal chance to win.
Let the reading begin!
Kindergarten Registration & Open
House!
We will begin registering kindergarten children for the 2012-13 school year on Thursday March 1st. If you or family and friends
that live in the Alderwood district, have a
child entering Kindergarten this coming
fall, please come by our office to pick up a
registration packet. Also on Wednesday
March 14th, Alderwood will be hosting it’s
Kindergarten Open House from 2:30 to
3:30 for all our prospective kindergarten
students and their families. This is the perfect opportunity to come by and tour the
school and meet the Kindergarten teachers!
If you have a neighbor or know a family
with a kindergarten age child, please tell
them to visit our school or call our office.
SCHOOL NEWS
Intermediate Music Notes:
From Music Teacher Mona Dahl
Fourth and fifth graders have started recorders in music! We are having a great time learning to play this
instrument. Please make sure your student brings
their recorder to school every Wednesday through the
end of March. The Alderwood Elementary Choir began
in early February for all interested 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. We meet on Wednesdays during lunch and recess,
and some students miss a bit of class in order to be in
the choir. We are preparing for the San Juan Music
Educators’ Elementary Choir Festival, which will be
held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Sehome High
School in Bellingham. We hope you can attend. We
have 58 students in our choir this year!

informed about emergencies and other important information.
WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND THE DISTRICT
Squalicum High School Future Business Leaders. Are you an artist or photographer? Is so, you
might be interested in Haggen’s “Create the Next Reusable Bag Contest”! SQHS FBLA members have
partnered with Haggen to bring students this opportunity. So create and submit up to three photos or
drawings by February 19, the winning designs will appear on Haggen’s next reusable bags sold at Haggen and you can select a charity to donate the profits to. The competition is for all schools in Whatcom
County and divided into three brackets based on grade level. Designs will be posted on Haggen’s Facebook page and voting will take place as soon as February 8th thru February 22nd. Top ten entries with
the highest votes in each bracket will be judged by a panel.

STUDENT ARRIVAL PROCEDURES
Just a reminder to parents to not to drop your child off at school until 8:00 a.m. or later. Starting at 8:00,
students may go to breakfast or outside on the playground until the bell rings at 8:25. There is no adult
supervision before 8:00 and all office staff are working and not able to look after students that arrive
early. We appreciate your help in making sure all our students are kept safe and looked after when they
arrive at school.
STUDENT DROP OFF AND PICK UP
When dropping off or picking up your child from school, we ask that you park in the guest parking lot on
the South side of the building. If you wish to stay in your car, we ask that you park along the shoulder by
the soccer field and wait for our dismissal supervisors to direct you when a space opens in front of the
school. Do not stop or park in the lane of traffic. The lanes in front of the building are used by the busses
and need to remain open, so please do not pull up along the curb without being directed to do so. Keeping the lanes open helps bus drivers pull in safely to the curb and pick up or drop off those students riding busses to and from school. Thank you for helping keep Alderwood kids safe!
SCHOOL CLOSURE INFORMATION—NON ENGLISH
In the event school is closed due to weather, all non-English speaking families can call the following
number to hear updates in your home language on any school closures! The number is: 360-647-6815.
PREVENTATIVE DENTAL VISITS COMING UP!
On March 7, 8 and 9, the Preventative Dental Services dental van will be at Alderwood to
provide students with dental assessments, cleanings, fluoride treatments, preventative
education and sealants. Students may sign up for this service if they have Medicaid Cards,
Basic Health Plus, or Healthy Options and do not have dental care every six months. Fliers were sent home last week with information and a sign up form. If you would like your
child to participate in the free dental services, fill the form out and return by Monday
March 5th.
Q & A WITH SHANNON LEMIEUX—ELL TEACHER
What made you decide to become a teacher?
I have always loved learning, and teaching is a great way to continue exploring and sharing my passion to learn.
My mother and my high school English teacher, Ms. Wheeler-Smith, were influential in sparking my desire to
teach.
What part of your job is the most rewarding?
All of it! Alderwood is a great school with fantastic students and staff. My favorite part of the day is starting each
morning in the library with Rosetta Stone and Math Whizz. It is great to see how many students are ready to start
the day learning right at 8 o’clock.
If you were not a teacher, what career would you have chosen, and why?
An astronaut. Space exploration would definitely be the next best thing.
If you could trade places with one person for a day, who would it be and why?
It would be fun to trade places with my students. Can you imagine?!
