Samantha de Jong was born in
Scheveningen. Everybody knows her as the
girl from the reality series who looks a lot
like Barbie. After she was in the serie Oh oh
Cherso, she began a reality serie from her
own life called Barbie's wedding and
Barbie's baby.

Handler couldn't stop thinking about the
stunning lifeless little lady in the window.
When she came home, she saw her little
daughter playing with paper dolls with
drawn blond hair, pink lips and giving them
adult roles. Again she thought of the doll in
de toyshop. It would be a gap in the market
to give the children in the United States as
beautiful dolls as they had in Swiss. So
Handler decided to sell the rights to produce
a similar doll in the United States. Bild Lilli,
the German doll which she had seen in the
window, had now became Barbie

Critisism
The first Barbie
In July, 1992, the Teen Talk Barbie was
released, which spoke a number of phrases
like 'I love shopping!'; and 'Wanna have a
pizza party?';. Out of 270 possible phrases,
each doll was programmed to say only four
of them, to decrease the amount of crying
little girls if they found out they just received
two of the same talking Barbie's as their
birthday present. One of these phrases was
';Math class is tough!';, often misquoted as
';Math is hard';. It led again to criticism and unless only about 1,5% of all the dolls sold
said the phrase - half a year later, it was
announced that Teen Talk Barbie would no
longer say the phrase.
Barbie's breast didn't seem to be the only
thing people were worried about. One of the
most common criticisms of Barbie is that
she promotes an unrealistic idea of body for
young woman. Barbie would have a BMI of
16.24 and fit the weight criteria for anorexia.
And so, in 1997, Barbie's body was given a
wider waist.
Barbie, named after Handler's daughter
Barbara, was officially born on 9 March,
1959, three years after Handler had been to
Europe. The first Barbie doll wore a black
and white zebra striped swimsuit and was
available as either a blonde or brunette. The
doll was a huge rage and around 350.000
Barbie dolls were sold during the first year
of production.
Not only Samantha de Jong wants to look
like Barbie, there are a lot of girls who
wants to look like her.
People often say that someone looks like a
Barbie just because of the way they look. A
Barbie is popularly a girl with a lot of
make-up on and with blond hair that tends
to white hair.
Once upon a time, an American
businesswoman called Ruth Handler and
her two children made a road trip through
Europe. While they were walking through
the mountains of Swiss, Ruth�s
eye fell on a doll in the window of a
toyshop. With her long blonde hair, her
perfect pink colored lips and her beautiful
sea blue eyes, she was really an eye
catcher.
The real Barbie
Every girl in the world wanted to have one
of those adult-looking dolls. It was kind of a
role model how every girl wanted to look
when they would become older. Handler
also believed that it was important for
Barbie to have an adult appearance, but
research showed that some parents
were unhappy about the breasts of the doll,
they should be less big.
Barbie’s appearance has been changed
many times to be eventually the perfect doll
for every girl and what every concerned
mother wishes for. After two years of selling
the popular Barbie doll, Handler thought it
was time to introduce a male Barbie called
Ken, named after Handler’s son Kenneth.
Later followed more Barbie dolls like
Barbie’s little sister Skipper. And by now, it’s
estimated that over a billion Barbie dolls
have been sold worldwide in over 150
countries.
